giate journey as they were ushered into NOVA’s community of scholars. The speakers provided the students with pertinent information that will assist them in becoming successful and active NOVA students. Each participant received a commemorative pin as a token of their commitment to higher education.

The students were not the only ones to make a commitment. NOVA representatives also made a commitment to provide the students with the best opportunity for higher education available.

After the ceremony, the participants enjoyed a lovely reception in the forum where light refreshments were served and everyone listened to the music of the NOVA Jazz Ensemble.

The event was a great success due in large part to the staff that worked hard behind the scenes – Dr. Joann Credle and Jessie Zahorian. The event was a great way to start off the students’ academic year. Congratula-tions to all who participated.

Alexandria Campus Walk to Help the Homeless

On September 29, faculty, staff and students participated in a campus “Walk to Help the Homeless” event for the second year at the Alexandria Campus. The event was organized to raise funds for the home-less and those at risk of becoming homeless in the Alexandria community. The walk was followed by the viewing of a documentary film on living below poverty level and a brief discussion by Christine Fiske, United Community Ministries. More than $700 was raised by participants and other contributors, which will directly benefit residents of the City of Alexandria and those living along the Route 1 Corridor.

The event was co-sponsored by the Alexandria Campus Women’s Center, the Circle K International student organization and United Community Ministries in Alexandria.

Alexandria Campus Library Blog Passes 20,000 Page Views

In 2005, the Alexandria Campus Library launched its first ever blog to publicize news and events, as well as to record milestones concerning the library and staff. Seven years later, readers have viewed blog pages over 20,500 times. Over 230 individual posts record such events as eleven extensions of library hours for exams, nine book sales, six National Library Week celebrations, five Constitution Day observations, four Virginia Library Association Conferences, three art exhib-its or performances, two weddings, and one deliv-ery of flowers from a class who were grateful to a librarian who showed them how to do research.

Major events were recorded, like the expansion of the library after the opening of Phase III, three months without air conditioning in 2009, and the great carpeting and renovation adventure of the summer of 2010 in which every book in the collection was removed from the shelves, stored, and later replaced. Other events recorded for posterity include a milestone birthday, a staff wedding, World Cup celebrations, the 30th birthday of the library suggestion book, and updates on the library plant life. So take a look at the Alexandria Campus Library Blog: http://alexandrialibrary.blogspot.com/ to keep up to date, or to take a walk down memory lane. You might even run across an unlikely photo or two.

Collection Development Librarian Matt Todd, former Dean of Learning Resources Dave Williams and Associate Direc-tor Sylvia Rortvedt find some NOVA fashion items in the library archives.

A New Role for a Familiar Face at NOVA’s Annandale Campus

In August, Mark Mannheimer accepted the position of coordinator for student success on the Annandale Campus. In this new position, Mannheimer will plan, direct, manage and oversee the activities and operations of campus student success initiatives including New Stu-dent Orientation (NSO), First Year Experience (FYE), Learning Communities and Student Activities.

Mannheimer’s background is rooted in student affairs and higher education. He earned a master’s degree in counseling and human development with a concentration in higher education administration from Radford University. While at Radford, he worked closely with residence life, the dean of students, student activities, orientation and peer mentoring programs.

After completing graduate school, he worked in University Housing at Florida State Univer-sity. As a coordinator there, he supervised the day-to-day operations of a residential complex, worked with the FYE program, and provided advisory support for the hall government and several campus-wide organizations.

Since arriving at the Annandale Campus in the spring of 2008, Mannheimer has served as both a student activities and Veterans affairs counselor as well as acting coordinator for the International Student Center. He has provided valuable knowledge, leadership and support to SOAR, NSO and Learning Community programs. As part of the college-wide NSO Taskforce, he has collaborated with administrators and staff to help produce an online SOAR program that will be piloted in the coming year. Mannheimer has developed strong working relationships with college administrators, staff and faculty and was instrumental in providing faculty training for summer advising.

Mannheimer is excited for this new opportunity and eager to help aid in the development and enrichment of the student success program and initiatives at Annandale.

Congratulations Mark!

National Information Literacy Awareness Month

NOVA libraries are joining other libraries, museums and educational institutions across the nation in promoting October as National Information Literacy Awareness month. In today’s digital world, people who are information literate know how to find, access and critically evaluate information to improve their health, environment, education and workplace performance. Having that skill set empowers them to inter-pret and make informed decisions about their lives, in essence taking more responsibility for their own indi-vidual welfare and that of the nation.

In 2009, President Barack Obama noted in a proclamation, “Rather than merely possessing data, we must also learn the skills necessary to acquire, collate, and evaluate information for any situation. This new type of literacy also requires competency with communication technologies, including computers and mobile devices that can help in our day-to-day decision making. National Information Literacy Awareness Month highlights the need for all Americans to be adept in the skills necessary to effectively navigate the Informa-tion Age.”

For additional information, please see the National Information Literacy Awareness Month website: http://infolit.org/national-information-literacy-awareness-month/.

Wetlands are ecosystems still undervalued in the United States and throughout the world. Although the international scientific and public communities have taken steps to protect them, the areal extent of these ecosystems continues to decline. The functions that ecosystems provide to living organisms, what the inter-national community is doing to protect these ecosystems, and some current research in wetland vegetation will be discussed.

Williams earned a B.A. and M.S. in biology from George Mason University. She spent 17 years in private industry as a toxicology and biochemistry technician. She began teaching at NOVA in 2004 as an adjunct in as a biology instructor and in 2009, she became a full-time member of the Annandale MSE faculty. Williams is currently working toward a M.S. in science education through Montana State Univer-sity.

Williams’ professional interests are in science education, botany and all aspects of wetland ecology. She assists graduate students at the Wetland Ecology Lab directed by Dr. Changwoo Ahn at George Mason University with vegetation collections and identifications. She and Ahn are currently collaborating on experiments that model competition amongst wetland plants in miniature ecosystems called mesocosms. Williams and her botany and general biology students have also worked with Earth Sangha, a local environmental group, on streamside restoration projects.

This seminar is presented by the Mathematics, Science and Engineering Division and the Lyceum. Author Justin Martin to be Lyceum Speaker in November

Justin Martin, author of “Genius of Place: The Life of Frederick Law Olmsted,” will speak about his new book on Wednesday, November 2 at 12:30 p.m. in the CE Forum on the Annandale Campus.

Martin’s new book tells the story of one of the most important figures in the history of America. Olmsted was a fervent abolitionist, noted journalist, Civil War hero, early environmentalist and the land-scape architect behind New York's Central Park, Boston's Emerald Necklace, Stanford University, the Biltmore Estate and dozens of other green spaces around the U.S.

Martin’s previous biography subjects include Alan Greenspan and Ralph Nader. The Greenspan bio was selected as a notable book for 2001 by the New York Times Book Review. The Nader bio was a primary source for “An Unreasonable Man,” an Academy Award nominated documentary.

Martin is a 1987 graduate of Rice University in Houston, Texas. He was married in Olmsted’s Central Park and currently lives with his wife and twin sons in Forest Hills Gardens, New York, a neighborhood designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr.

HOTTOPICS Faculty Promotions

It is a pleasure to announce that 70 members of NOVA’s faculty earned promotions in rank this past July

and August. There were 14 promotions to the rank of professor, 43 promotions to the rank of associate professor, and 13 promotions to the rank of assistant professor. You can see the full list in this week’s attachment section. Please join us in congratulating them on their accomplishment.

The Faculty Promotion Process for this fiscal year has begun. Faculty applying for promotion should submit NOVA Form 105-14 Request for Review of Credentials for Promotion to their supervisor by the end of November. You can also see an overview of the process in this week’s attachment section.

The Chancellor’s Faculty Fellowship Program, Chancellor’s Commonwealth Professors Program,

and President’s Sabbatical Award

NOVA faculty have consistently distinguished themselves by winning the top teaching awards. This year the college nominees for the prestigious SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Awards are Callan Bentley, Rebecca Kamen, Charles Poland, and Jane Serbousek.

It is time now for all eligible faculty to consider applying for three other opportunities. The Chancellor’s Faculty Fellowship Program provides paid leave and tuition assistance for doctoral degrees in leadership/higher education or discipline specific programs. The fellowship provides between $7,500-$12,500 in tuition assistance and a leave of absence of one year to pursue full-time graduate study. It pays the recipients three-quarters of their salary during their leave with continuation of insurance, retirement, seniority, and other employee benefits.

The Chancellor’s Commonwealth Professors Program provides release time and summer stipends over a two-year period for faculty members to complete a self-directed educational project. Recipients can receive up to $7,500 in reimbursable expenses related to their teaching/learning project, a $3,000 stipend for two consecutive summers, and release time for four courses over a two-year period.

There are very specific eligibility requirements for each of these awards and those interested in applying should go the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) webpage and then link to the faculty/staff section for more information. By November 21, please submit a two-page statement that the Awards Committee will review in their consideration of NOVA’s nominees for these awards. Those interested in the Chancellor’s Faculty Fellowship Awards should specify the degree that they are pursuing and the university that they will be attending. Those who wish to apply for the Chancellor’s Commonwealth Professor Program will need to address the self-directed project that focuses on community college teaching and learning.

The President’s Sabbatical Award allows three professors, one of whom can be on a 12-month contract, to receive a semester of leave with full pay. Proposals should be no longer than 1,000 words, include a 50 word executive summary, and specify how the sabbatical will uniquely benefit both the indi-vidual and the College. Faculty members on the Personnel Services Committee will evaluate the proposals and make recommendations to President Robert G. Templin, Jr. Award recipients will present a lecture on their sabbatical experience to the college community during the year following their leave. The deadline for the President’s Sabbatical Award is December 2.

Please forward your proposals for these three valuable professional development opportunities to Dr. Charles Errico at [email protected].
