MUSINGS FROM MATT . . .

We’re more than half way through Lent. Next Sunday is Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week.

And thus we have the procession from Jesus’ Triumphal Entry of Palm Sunday, the days leading to

Maundy Thursday and his betrayal after the Last Supper, his passion on Good Friday and the Mystery

of Easter morning. And so this is my challenge. You see, triumphal entries I understand. And I get

betrayal and even though it’s uncomfortable, the suffering. But Easter is tough. Easter is a mystery. I

don’t even speculate as to the “HOW” of Easter anymore. Exactly, precisely what happened in that

tomb (“he descended into Hell, the third day he rose again”) is beyond me. I don’t even remotely

understand the technical process of how God and Christ pulled off the resurrection. That is a

mystery that I have become more than content to live with.

But the real mystery is in the “WHY” of Easter. Why would God do it? Oh, I know the answer

involves God’s infinite Love for God’s children, but still I strive to conceive of that kind of

measureless Love. The closest I can come is in reflecting on those relationships of family and friends.

I’m old enough to know that almost every relationship, given enough time and if it is a meaningful

one, will become strained or conflicted. And there have been times when that strain or conflict has

escalated, but the relationship sustains because my relationship with that person is more important

than some “sin” that they may have committed against me or I against them. The relationship is

more important.

Our God is a God for whom the relationship is more important than the sin. So God will come in

Christ and take the sin from us. No, I’ll never really understand it all, but then I don’t have to

understand it all. I just give thanks and celebrate. Easter morning: “He has risen!”

Join this Holy Week and celebrate the mystery.

Shalom,

Matt
