Since 1959, GP Chemicals has supplied thermosetting resins to manufacturers throughout the wood products industry. Our long-standing success rests on our reliability as a supplier, consistent quality products, technical expertise and our commitment to offering solutions. As a result of our focus on value creation and knowledge of the industry, we continue to provide innovative products and services that help meet the new challenges facing our customers. Our extensive portfolio of adhesives includes products for wood applications including particleboard, medium density fi berboard (MDF), hardboard, structural panels, plywood, oriented strand board (OSB) and laminated veneer lumber (LVL). Beyond our resin and adhesive product portfolio, we offer services and products to help our customers’ plants optimize production and address the needs of emissions testing.

Low-Emitting Formaldehyde-Based Resins for MDF and ParticleboardFrom low-emission resins to customized scavenger systems, GP Chemicals offers LEAF® products, a platform of technologies to meet the growing demand for low-emission adhesives in wood composites. LEAF technical solutions can aid in complying with a variety of green building standards, the California Air Resource Board (CARB) Airborne Toxic Control Measure (ATCM) for Composite Panels and the federal Formaldehyde Standards in Composite Wood Act. These products have been successfully substituted into particleboard and MDF manufacturing processes and can be used in combination with our specialized scavenger and catalyst systems.

The GP Chemicals portfolio of LEAF solutions includes:

• LEAF C2 resins: Low-emission adhesives that can contribute to compliance with CARB and federal formaldehyde emissions standards, as well as some green building standards. Depending on a manufacturer’s process and requirements, LEAF C2 adhesives can be a melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) or urea-formaldehyde (UF) formulation.

• LEAF ULEF resins and scavenger systems: A line of ultra-low emitting formulations designed for wood composite manufacturers and their customers who want to pursue green building programs. This portfolio of solutions, which includes a new LEAF ULEF single component scavenger resin, can contribute toward Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) 2009 and LEED® v4 credits. These products can also help meet other green building requirements such as GREEN GLOBES® and the National Green Building Standard™ of the National Association of Home Builders. LEAF ULEF adhesives may be MUF, melamine-formaldehyde (MF), or phenol-formaldehyde (PF) based.

Plywood ResinsOur new RESI-BOND® Ultra and RESI-MIX® Ultra adhesives allow manufacturers to bond plywood with a wide range of moisture content without sacrifi cing performance. Plywood production with pocket moisture ranges of 2% to 30% when veneer moisture sorts are strategically located in panel lay-ups, has been demonstrated using this exclusive resin system.

GP Chemicals was the fi rst manufacturer to offer a line of ready-for-use mixed adhesives for plywood applications. RESI-MIX® ready-for-use adhesives combine neat liquid PF resins with extenders and fi llers. These adhesive systems work across a broad range of veneer moisture and assembly conditions and can be customized to meet product requirements and mill conditions.

GP Chemicals also provides RESI-BOND® neat liquid PF resins for mills that prefer in-plant mixing.

LVL AdhesivesGP Chemicals produces RESI-MIX® ready-to-use mixed adhesives specifi cally formulated for LVL. Products certifi ed to comply with ASTM D2559, ASTM D7247 and CSA 0112.6/0112.9 are available as well as adhesive systems possessing fast tack development for LVL lay-up lines that employ a prepress operation. These PF-based adhesives can be custom-formulated to meet challenging mill conditions. They perform in a broad range of processing and hot-pressing conditions, including batch and continuous pressing operations; conventional hot presses and RF heating; and lay-up lines with and without pre-heaters.

OSB ResinsFrom value-added OSB to commodity grades, GP Chemicals has proven adhesive solutions for the OSB manufacturer.

RESI-STRAN® liquid PF adhesives are available in face and core resin formulations and can be customized for resin cure speed in both multi- and single-opening presses.

WOODWELD® powder PF resins are offered in both face and core formulations and typically allow for lower resin application rates.

Our new PF-based adhesive combination system, which can be tailored to individual mills, provides the fl exibility to apply PF adhesives more effi ciently. This system helps reduce the moisture content going into the press and can eliminate the need for release agents, affording customers alternatives to pMDI in the surface layer. Use of this system has resulted in substantial cost savings for our customers.

Beyond Adhesives – Services from GP ChemicalsWe go beyond providing quality products. We have the hands-on expertise to help our customers optimize productivity. Our service offerings and equipment aid our customers in areas other than adhesives.

Through GP™ Process Modeling, real-time statistical modeling of process parameters can identify opportunities for improvement and variation reduction throughout the production process. GP Process Modeling can drive improved throughput, substantial savings in raw materials, greater troubleshooting effi ciency, “what-if” modeling of proposed parameter changes, and improved data capture for benchmarking and decision-making.

The GP™ Dynamic Microchamber (DMC) was created over 20 yearsago to assist the wood panel industry with emissions testing. The GP DMC

correlates to the Large Scale Chamber Test method (ASTM E1333-96(2002)) and the Small Scale Chamber Test (ASTM D6007-02). This computer-integrated small scale formaldehyde test system is approved by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the U.S. EPA as an alternative small scale test method for conducting quality control testing of formaldehyde emissions. The majority of the Composite Panel Association’s qualifi ed producers utilize the GP DMC as their primary testing method. Enhanced software introduced in 2012 provides improved capability to test emissions from ULEF resins and produces emissions results for 11 samples in 3½ hours.

GP Chemicals not only created the equipment and copyrighted software but also is the exclusive technical service provider for the GP DMC. Our enhanced service program includes calibrations, upgrades, repair service, training and parts. The convenient one-stop online service at www.GP-DMC.com provides access to all the tools needed to keep a GP DMC running effectively.
