(NAPSA)-One of the most

important learning tools for

students is broadband

Internet at home. With it,

students can tackle almost

any assignment. Beyond

benefits to education, the

Internet offers a world of

opportunity to the entire

family, bringing quick and

easy access to an endless

variety of resources that

make health care, job search-

es, saving money and staying

in touch with friends or fam-

ily as simple as the click of a

mouse.

For instance, with the

Internet at home, you have

the ability to:

• Search and Apply for Jobs

Online-Whether writing a

résumé, learning interview

skills, networking or finding

and applying for a job, the

Internet can be crucial for

the job search. Check out

sites such as

CareerBuilder.com,

Indeed.com and

LinkedIn.com.

• Access Health Care

Information-With the

Internet, you can search for

quality medical care nearby,

read reviews of health care

professionals, keep track of

your insurance coverage and

monitor your health progress

on sites such as

http://health.yahoo.net and

WebMD.com.

• Find Educational

Resources-Not only is the

Internet a place to research

and write homework assign-

ments, it also offers students

of any age the opportunity

to explore everything from

the GED test and colleges to

getting student aid and find-

ing a scholarship. Try

CollegeSource.org,

InfoPlease.com and

CK12.org.

• Explore Financial Literacy

and Support-Getting a credit

card, creating a budget, find-

ing tax help, retirement plan-

ning or learning helpful tips

on managing money-the

Internet, and sites such as

MyMoney.gov and

Mint.com, can help you get

a better understanding of it

all.

• Stay Connected–E-mail is

a quick way to send and

receive messages. You can

also choose to get bills and

bank statements electronical-

ly, instead of through the

mail.

• Use Social Media-For

most, social media is a way

for family and friends to stay

in touch. It's also a way to

find new recipes or learn

parenting tips. Popular sites

include Facebook, Twitter,

Instagram, Pinterest and

Skype.

Unfortunately, not everyone

has broadband Internet serv-

ice at home. Many low-

income families struggle to

afford it, while others simply

don't understand the benefits

the Internet can provide. In

fact, in many low-income

neighborhoods, broadband

adoption rates are only

around 15 to 20 percent,

while in upper income com-

munities, broadband pene-

tration rates are as high as

90 percent. With 30 percent

of the U.S. still without

broadband Internet service

at home, far too many con-

tinue to miss out on all the

terrific resources the Internet

can deliver.

To help bridge this digital

divide in America, programs

such as Comcast's Internet

Essentials have been devel-

oped. Offering families with

at least one child eligible for

the National School Lunch

Program in-home Internet

for less than $10 a month;

computers for less than

$150; and free digital literacy

training online, in print or in

person, it's the largest and

most comprehensive broad-

band adoption program in

the country.

In less than two years,

Internet Essentials has con-

nected 220,000 families-

approximately 900,000 low-

income Americans-to the

power of the Internet.

Speeds for customers are

now up to 5 Mbps down-

stream and up to 1 Mbps

upstream. The enrollment

process has also been

streamlined with instant

approval eligibility available

to more schools.

To take advantage of this

program, call (855) 846-8376

or visit

www.InternetEssentials.com

or www.InternetBasico.com.

Additional resources,

Internet safety information,

how-to websites and instruc-

tional videos on how the

Internet can benefit students

and families can be found at

http://learning.inter-

netessentials.com.

For The Week Of October 16th to October 22nd. CAPRICORN December 22– January 19 The tiniest of gestures often have the most impact. Let that loved one know how you feel, and you won’t believe what happens next, Capricorn. AQUARIUS January 20-February 18 Angling for a position, Aquarius? So are many others. In order to succeed, you will have to set yourself apart from the competition. PISCES February 19-March 20 Some promises were meant to broken, Pisces. Go ahead and divulge what you know. Your friend needs to be aware of what is going on. A procedure is reworked. ARIES March 21– April 19 Music inspires you to reach out to a friend. Treat them with kid gloves, Aries. They have been through quite the ordeal. An email offer is enticing. TAURUS April 20-May 20 Pretense is your best defense in a situation at home. Feign ignorance, Taurus, and others will follow suit. The mood will change before you know it, and calm will be restored. GEMINI May 21-June 21 Your credibility is called into question. Stand your ground, Gemini. A conflict continues to simmer at home. Someone you least expect comes to the rescue.

CANCER June 22-July 22 You, Cancer, and only you have the answer. Look deep within. A run-in with a pal starts the walk down memory lane. Could a reunion be in store? LEO July 23-August 22 Fire up the grill, Leo. People are coming over. Be a gracious host, and you will be blessed in more ways than one. A late-night call settles a matter. VIRGO August 23-September 22 Finances shape up and family conflicts come to an end. Celebrate with loved ones, Virgo, in particular the apple of your eye. A book inspires change. LIBRA September 23-October 22 Love has been put on the back burner for long enough. Focus on the people who matter most and work to strengthen your bonds with them, Libra. SCORPIO October 23-November 21 You’ve placated a coworker long enough. Time to get real with them, Scorpio. They messed up, and the sooner you call them on it, the more progress you will make. SAGITTARIUS November 22-December 21 Uh-uh-uh, Sagittarius. You cannot sweep the issue under the rug. You must deal with it, and you must deal with it now. A youngster needs some advice.

Diesel Engines and Premium Synthetic Oils

(NAPSA) –– It’s a new day for diesel engines. That’s the word from experts who say improvements in diesel technology and fuel composition have made diesel vehicles more appealing to a broader group of consumers. Because of these improvements, people who choose diesel vehicles report better gas mileage and increased torque. Plus, diesel vehicles typically hold their value in the resale market better than those with gasoline-powered engines. While in the past many thought that you could not use a synthetic oil in a diesel engine, that is not the case. Today’s diesel vehicles can benefit from the same improvements in performance and protection that a premium synthetic motor oil, such as Royal Purple, offers gas-powered vehicles. Common Questions To help, here are some answers to common questions about using a synthetic oil in a diesel vehicle. • Is it possible to run synthetic for one oil change and then switch back to mineral oil? Yes. Most synthetic oils including Royal Purple are compatible with other mineral and synthetic oils. You will want to check the label on the manufacturer’s bottle for confirmation. • What is the difference between 5W-40 and 15W-40 for diesel engines? Assuming they are American Petroleum Institute (API) licensed (CI-4, CJ-4, etc.), both are effective SAE 40 weight oils. As the oil cools from engine operating temperature, the 5W-40 will thicken less than the 15W-40. The smaller the first number of the viscosity, the better the fluid flows when cold. Depending on the age of your engine, older diesel engines may see a slight increase in oil consumption with lighter oil. • Do you need to adjust the viscosity of your oil based on where you live? Sometimes. The way you use your vehicle is also a factor. In general, many auto manufacturers recommend an “all temperature” viscosity. Your ow?ner’s manual will indicate which “all temperature” oil is recommended for your vehicle and location. • What about premium oil filters? It’s a good idea to use a premium oil filter in tandem with a synthetic oil. Oil filters prevent contaminants from circulating through the system, causing damage. Premium oil filters offer superior filtration media and internal and structural components made of high-quality material. If you’re considering purchasing a diesel vehicle, don’t forget that maintaining the vehicle is key.

Giving You The Assurance To Make It All Happen!

Most people have a mortgage

and understand how traditional

mortgages work. They may

know little about a reverse

mortgage, however. Put simply,

a reverse mortgage is a home

equity loan that does not have

to be paid back until you no

longer live in the home.

The most common type of

reverse mortgage is a Home

Equity Conversion Mortgage

(HECM). The Federal Housing

Administration created this

type of mortgage in 1989. It is

intended for people in their

retirement years. In fact, one

requirement is that you must be

62 years old or older. Other

requirements include a substan-

tial amount of equity in your

home. This could mean you

own the home outright or have

a low mortgage balance that

could be paid off with proceeds

from the reverse mortgage. You

must also reside in the home

and pay all property taxes and

insurance.

No monthly payments are due

on the loan; therefore, no

income or credit scores are

required. The Federal Housing

Administration (FHA) requires

that all applicants receive inde-

pendent counseling from a

third party. A certificate of

completion is required, which is

submitted to the lender.

Payments can be made on the

loan, but they are not neces-

sary. The reverse mortgage is

due when the borrower dies or

no longer lives in the residence.

The borrower's heirs pay back

the loan and interest. They

have 12 months to either sell

the house and pay back the

loan or refinance.

If the loan is not repaid, the

lender can foreclose on the

property. If funds from foreclo-

sure are not sufficient to pay

back the loan, government

insurance will make up the dif-

ference. The purchase of this

type of insurance is another

requirement of obtaining a

reverse mortgage. After the

loan and interest are repaid,

any excess funds are dispensed

to the heirs.

Reverse mortgages best benefit

individuals who need extra

income and who plan to stay in

their home for a long period of

time or for the rest of their

lives. Cash received from a

reverse mortgage is not consid-

ered income and is not taxed.

It also does not affect Social

Security or Medicare. It may

affect eligibility for need-based

local or state assistance.

A reverse mortgage is not for

everyone. For those who find

themselves later in life and

need the extra income, it might

be beneficial. If you are inter-

ested, do your homework,

crunch the numbers and figure

out if a reverse mortgage is for

you.

The Assisted Living Federation

of America defines assisted liv-

ing as a long-term care option

that combines housing, support

services and health care, as

needed. Assisted living is

designed for individuals who

require assistance with every-

day activities such as meals,

medication management or

assistance, bathing, dressing

and transportation. Some resi-

dents may have memory disor-

ders including Alzheimer's, or

they may need help with

mobility, incontinence or other

challenges. Residents are

assessed upon move in, or any

time there is a change in condi-

tion. The assessment is used to

develop an Individualized

Service Plan.

Assisted living is a residential

alternative to nursing home

care. According to the National

Survey of Residential Care

Facilities, there are over 31,000

assisted living communities

nationwide serving almost one

million seniors. A relatively

new concept twenty-five years

ago, today assisted living is the

most preferred and fastest

growing long-term care option

for seniors.

Based on the varied preferences

and needs of the elderly, there

are a variety of settings from

which to choose. These choices

range from high-rise buildings

to one-story Victorian man-

sions to large multi-acre cam-

puses.

More than half of all residents

are age 85 or older, and nearly

40 percent of residents require

assistance with three or more

activities of daily living. The

median stay in assisted living is

22 months, and an overwhelm-

ing majority of residents are

female

The philosophy of assisted liv-

ing is to provide personalized,

resident centered care in order

to meet individual preferences

and needs. Assisted living treats

all residents with dignity, pro-

vides privacy and encourages

independence and freedom of

choice. Residents' family mem-

bers and friends are encour-

aged to get involved in the

assisted living community.

Encourage your loved ones to

learn about the care provider

philosophy.

The most progressive state reg-

ulations take cues from con-

sumers and focus on protecting

consumers in a way that pro-

vides the most choice and inde-

pendence possible. ALFA sup-

ports certain principles and

public policy positions that

should be included in every

state's assisted living legislative

and regulatory framework.

Assisted living communities

provide more personal care

services than an independent

living retirement community.

They offer a less-expensive, res-

idential approach to delivering

many of the same services

available in skilled nursing,

either by employing personal

care staff or contracting with

home health agencies and

other outside professionals.

Amenities in assisted liv-

ing typically include:

• Three meals a day served in a

common dining area

• Housekeeping services

• Transportation

• 24-hour security

• Exercise and wellness pro-

grams

• Personal laundry services

• Social and recreational activi-

ties

Personal care in assisted

living typically includes:

• Staff available to respond to

both scheduled and unsched-

uled needs

• Assistance with eating,

bathing, dressing, toileting,

and walking

• Access to health and medical

services, such as physical thera-

py and hospice

• Emergency call systems for

each resident's apartment

• Medication management

• Care for residents with cogni-

tive impairments

Assisted living costs vary with

the residence, apartment size,

and types of services needed.

The basic rate may cover all

services or there may be addi-

tional charges for special servic-

es. Most assisted living resi-

dences charge on a month-to-

month lease arrangement, but

a few require long-term

arrangements. Assisted living is

of often less expensive than

home health or nursing home

care in the same geographic

area.

According to the National

Investment Center, the median

rate for a monthly rental rates

in an assisted living community

is $3,326 per month. In com-

parison, the NIC also indicates

the median rate of Nursing

Care at $7,001 per month. The

median is the midpoint, which

means half of residences par-

ticipating in the research have

lower fees and half have higher

fees. The rental rate includes

the base rent and service fees

charged by the assisted living

community.

While 86.2% of assisted living

residents today pay for long-

term care from their personal

financial resources, 41 states

offer "home and community-

based waivers" that allow low-

income residents to live in

assisted living. More seniors are

purchasing long-term care

insurance to help plan for and

finance their long-term care

needs.

Assisted living is regulated in all

50 states. State regulations

generally address the mandato-

ry services a senior living resi-

dence must provide. All settings

offer 24-hour care and supervi-

sion for those who need assis-

tance. Care is provided with

dignity and respect.

Before you start your search for

senior living options, ask your-

self key questions about what

you are looking for, what you

need to know, what your ideal

outcome would be a year after

move-in, how you will the cost

of living in a senior living com-

munity, and how you will make

the distinction between price

and value!?

Iowa Central Community College Dental Hygiene Student Clinic is an educational institution that provides preventative and oral

hygiene client treatment. In general, all persons who are able to afford the time and the cost will be treated at the school.

All treatment is provided by dental hygiene students. Dental hygiene students are supervised by licensed dental hygiene faculty and/or a licensed dentist. The care provided by our student hygienists is done in such a way that gives priority to education. This may result in longer treatment appointments than would occur in a private dental practice but at a greatly reduced fee for services because your time is your contribution to the student’s education.

We accept XIX, cash, check and credit cards for payment of services. Payment for dental hygiene treatment is required at each visit. We also offer a senior citizens discount!

Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention program reaching millions of Americans during the last week of October every year. By wearing red ribbons and participating in community anti-drug events, young people pledge to live a drug- free life and pay tribute to DEA Special Agent Enriqué “Kiki” Camarena.

In 1988, the National Family Partnership (NFP) coordinated the First National Red Ribbon Week with President and Mrs. Reagan serving as honorary chairpersons.

Schools, businesses, the faith community, media, families, and community coalitions join together to celebrate Red Ribbon Week in many ways, such as: sponsoring essay and poster contest; organizing drug-free races; decorating buildings in red; handing out red ribbons to customers; holding parades or community events; and by publicizing the value of a drug-free, healthy lifestyle.

HELOISEʼS KITCHENEERING BY HELOISE The Danger in the Dill

Dear Heloise: Recently, I wanted to dry some DILL in my microwave oven. I placed a paper towel, with pretty flower designs, on a glass tray and placed the dill on top. I set the microwave for 30 seconds and pushed the start button.

Much to my surprise, after a few seconds, the paper towel was on fire! I was shocked, because I have done this in the past with success. Later, I was replacing the paper towels and noticed a warning label on the wrapper. The warning stated not to dry herbs on paper towels in the microwave oven. I wanted to alert your readers to this. -- Elaine S. in Virginia

An important warning and reminder also to only use WHITE paper towels in the microwave, especially if cooking food. When drying herbs, separate the leaves from the stems, watch them closely and don’t walk away! Herbs dry quickly in the microwave and can burn easily. -- Heloise

PICKLE LID Dear Heloise: I was just reading my

September issue of Good Housekeeping magazine and noticed the question on deodorizing pickle-jar lids. Here’s what I’ve found that works well.

After thoroughly washing the lid with soapy dishwater, I place the lid outside in full sun, with the inside of the lid facing up. A day or two in the hot Texas sun seems to completely remove all

pickle odors. I love using glass jars for all kinds of storage. -- Linda G. in Texas

Yep! Good old Mother Nature can deliver a wallop or a pat. The sun can “bleach” out many things and, as you mentioned, kill pickle odor! -- Heloise

TEST YOUR HINT IQ Dear Readers: Poundcakes are

delicious, sweet cakes that taste great by themselves or dressed up with fruits and sauces. But do you know how the cake got its name? It was named for a pound of which ingredient used in the recipe?

A) Flour B) Sugar C) Eggs D) Butter E) All of the above The answer is E! This EASY recipe

just said to add a pound of EACH of the ingredients to make the cake. Any way you slice it, it’s a good dessert. -- Heloise

SOFT BROWN SUGAR Dear Heloise: I don’t use brown

sugar quickly, so I’ve tried every hint to keep it fresh. The best method is to store it in the freezer. It takes only a few minutes to thaw, and you’ll find it as soft and fresh as the day you bought it. -- Joan in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Be sure to place the sugar in a sealable plastic freezer bag. -- Heloise

CATCH SPILLS Dear Heloise: My family loves to eat

frozen fruit pops and ice creams on a stick. To catch spills, we poke the stick through a coffee filter and slide it under the frozen treat. The filter catches the spills. -- Marsha in Georgia
