Stitch Gauge: 7 sc sts = 4" and 4 sc rows = 2" For this pattern, you may have to use a looser tension than what you normally use in order for the stitch gauge to be correct, but the finished result is a comfortable, stretchy, loose-weave hat, which is worth it! If you find it difficult to stitch loosely, you may use a tighter tension and follow the instructions for the hat one size larger.

  • Notes:

If pattern says to sc in "first" or "same" st, stitch directly below where your hook is (the very first stitch of that row where you completed your ch 1 st). If pattern says to sc in "next" st, sc in the first st to the left of where you completed your ch 1 st.

If pattern says "sc 3", sc one time in each of next 3 sts. If pattern says "2sc", complete 2 sc sts in one st.

This pattern is worked in rounds. Do NOT join your rounds with a sl st. When you finish one round, begin your next right in the next st (use a stitch marker of some sort so you do not lose your place!).

For the main hat part of the pattern, you will be using 2 strands of worsted weight yarn held together as one. For the brim you will be using just 1 strand. It is easier to use 2 separate balls of yarn than to attempt to use both ends of one ball. If you do not want to purchase 2 balls, use 1 and hand roll a second ball.

Instructions for all sizes are included.

Special Stitches: Working in BLO: Generally, when you are crocheting, you will insert your hook into 2 loops of a stitch on your previous row to begin your stitch. For this stitch, instead of inserting your hook into 2 loops, you will be skipping over the front loop (the loop closest to you) and inserting the hook only under the back loop. The skipped front loops are what create the textured spiral look on the outside of the hat.

Working in FLO: These stitches will be worked just as the BLO stitches, except you will only be stitching in the front loop of the stitch (closest to you) and leaving the back.

sc2tog: To work the "sc2tog" stitch: insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (there should be 2 loops on your hook at this point), insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (there should now be 3 loops on your hook), yarn over and pull through all 3 loops. This completes one sc2tog (or "decrease") stitch.

Crochet one row deep: This term is used on alternating rows of the brim of this hat (rows 2, 4, 6 and 8). Instead of crocheting under the 2 loops of your stitch on the previous row as you normally would, you are going to insert your hook down one row. You are basically crocheting over the previous row. The stitches on the previous row will no longer be visible as this row covers over them. This stitch is sometimes referred to as a "spike stitch" or "SP-1". For the sake of clarity and not to confuse beginners, I will simply refer to this as crocheting one row deep throughout this pattern. This stitch is only used on the brim. The purpose of this stitch is to give your brim a stiffer texture and to give a nice even look to your brim rows. When the hat is complete it will look as though there are 4 brim rows, instead of 8. See photos of brim for a better picture.

Magic circle (magic ring): For a magic circle photo tutorial, see my blog post: http://busymomdesigns.com/blog/?p=12If you prefer to skip the magic circle, use Option #2 (in brackets) instead.

    Hat Brim

Brim instructions are for all sizes - refer to following "Hat Brim Stitch Counts" chart for individual row stitch counts per hat size.

On the even number rounds of the brim, you will be crocheting 1 row deep (see Special Stitches section above for an explanation). To be sure you are beginning your rows in the correct stitch, insert your hook one row down and just slightly to the left of the last stitch worked on the previous round.

On the odd number rounds of the brim, you will NOT be crocheting 1 row deep and you WILL be stitching all the way to the end of the row, completing your final st (sc2tog) in the first sc of the prev row AND the ch 1 sp. To be certain you are doing this correctly, double check your stitch counts at the end of each brim row using the stitch count chart below.

For a wider or narrower brim, add or remove 1-2 stitches from this row (but remember if you do so, your stitch counts will not match up with the Stitch Count Chart.

    Brim Instructions

Sl st in next st (BLO), you will now be dropping one strand of yarn so you are using just 1 strand. Switch to 4.5mm crochet hook (US - 7). (4.25mm (G) hook for Preemie Size).

Row 1: (Working with just 1 strand of yarn now and throughout the rest of the pattern), Ch 1, turn, working in FLO and starting in the same st, sc across for as many stitches as per row 1 in stitch count chart above.

Row 2: Working in both loops from this point until completion of brim, ch 1, turn, starting in the same st and crocheting 1 row deep, *sc, sc, 2sc* to end of row (see chart above for stitch counts for each hat size).

Row 3: NOTE: You are NOT crocheting 1 row deep for this row.Ch 1, turn, beginning in next st, sc2tog, sc in each st across to very last 2 sts in row, sc2tog (see chart above for stitch counts for each hat size).

    6

  • Row 4: Ch 1, turn (starting in same st and crocheting 1 row deep) sc in each st to end of row (see chart above for stitch counts for each hat size).

    Row 5: Repeat Row 3.

Row 6: Ch 1, turn (starting in the same st and crocheting 1 row deep) *sc 3, 2sc* to end of row (see chart above for stitch counts for each hat size).

    Row 7: Repeat Row 3.

    Row 8: Repeat Row 4.

    Finishing Round:

Without chaining 1 or turning, rotate hat so you are working down the side of the brim. Complete 1 more sc (1 row deep) in the same st as your last (corner) st. Sc evenly down side of brim to hat edge. Working in BLO of last round of hat and working with a comfortable (not too tight) tension

*sc, 2sc* around back of hat until you reach the opposite brim edge. Sc evenly up side of brim to corner st. Sc 1 row deep in corner st, sl st in next st. FO.

Weaving in tails: Because this hat is reversible and can be worn right-side out or inside out, you will want to be very careful about hiding your tails so they are not visible from either side of the hat. Since the hat is worked with 2 strands of yarn and the brim rows are double stitched, your hat is double-thick. Use your yarn needle to weave the tails right through the center of the stitches so they will not be visible from the front or back of the hat.
