Dear Parish Family,

As Bishop Malloy shared in his May 13 letter to the faithful, the Diocese of Rockford will resume the public celebration of Holy Mass beginning Monday, May 25 (Memorial Day). To be in compliance with the Diocesan guidelines, I am sharing with you the directives that have been established by the Diocese for public Masses.

Beginning May 25th, we will continue our regularly scheduled 8:45am daily Mass. Starting the weekend of May 30/31, we will reinstate our normal weekend Mass schedule with a 4pm Saturday Mass, and 8:00, 9:30 and

11:15am Sunday Masses. All Masses will have a 10-person attendance limit. For this reason, we will continue to live-stream both the 8:45am daily Mass and the 9:30am Sunday Mass. Please note that the Bishop’s dispensation from the Sunday and Holy Day obligation remains.

To be able to attend in person any of these Masses, you must make a reservation either in person, or by phone with the parish office. Reservations will be taken beginning at 9:30am when the office opens. Registered parishioners may sign themselves and their family up for one Mass time. This will be a “first come, first serve” basis. Unfortunately, since we are held to the 10-person limit, we cannot allow anyone to sign up for a second Mass until all parishioners that wish to attend once have been accommodated. Depending on how long we are held to the 10-person limit, parishioners may only be able to attend Holy Mass once every few months. We hope and pray we will be able to expand the attendance number sooner rather than later.

At this time, only registered parishioners will be given a Mass time. Anyone who would like to attend Mass who is not registered at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton must call their own parish.

If you need to reschedule, you must call the Parish Office. You may not give your slot away to someone of your choosing. In charity, we must give that spot to the next person waiting on the list.

On your scheduled Mass day, we ask that you please follow these procedures and reminders:

Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled Mass time and check in at the door. The doors will be locked prior to Mass. There will not be a “stand by” list for people to wait at the door.

Anyone with a cough of any sort or anyone feeling sick should NOT come to church for any reason. If you arrive showing signs of illness, you will be asked to return home.

Social distancing of 6’ must always be maintained and so parishioners will be escorted and assigned a spot in the church to sit. The 6’ social distance must be maintained upon entering and leaving the Church, as you process in the Communion line, as well as seating between non-family members. (Members of a single household who arrive together do not need to practice social distancing and may sit together.) During the time of the 10-person limit, the priest may opt to come to the pews to distribute Holy Communion.

You are required to use the hand sanitizer upon entering the church. The faithful must wear a protective mask except when receiving Holy Communion. You may wear gloves if you wish, but you may not

receive the Eucharist in gloved hands. On Sundays, collection baskets will be on the check-in table before Mass. We will not be passing a basket. Thank you in advance for

your continued financial support of our parish. Both the communal sign of peace and holding hands during the Our Father have been eliminated. If you are uncomfortable receiving Holy Communion, you are not required to do so. You may make a Spiritual Communion. Once the priest exits the church at the end of Mass, we ask that you immediately exit as well. Unfortunately, we will not be able to allow

you to remain in the church to pray once Mass has ended. We need the time between Masses to sanitize the areas before the next group arrives.

Please no socializing in the Narthex before or after Mass. If possible, we are asking you to refrain from using the restroom for the one hour you are here. If someone uses the restroom, our

maintenance staff is required to clean and sanitize it each time.

When we receive updates from the Diocese allowing for larger attendance at Mass, we will let you know. If you have any questions, please email Marcie [email protected], or call the parish office (815) 459-3033.

Thank you again for your patience as we gradually bring the Sacraments back to our parishioners. This truly has been a most difficult time, and we anxiously await a return to normalcy and a happy reunion at Mass in our parish home. Know of our continued prayers for you all. I am so looking forward to seeing you all back in our parish home!

As we continue to move (ever so slowly) towards the “new normal”, Confessions are now back inside the building! To adhere to the social distancing guidelines, we will not be using the confessionals, but will use the St. Teresa meeting room,

which is the last room in the Parish Hall hallway.

Here is the latest procedure for confessions:

Enter the Parish Hall through the left set of doors in the Meditation Garden (nearest the kitchen). You will want to park close to the back door, as no other parish doors will be unlocked. In the Hall, there will be yellow tape spaced more than 6’ apart on the carpet indicating where penitents may stand and wait in the confession line. Some penitents may need to wait outside in the Meditation Garden before they may enter the building if we have 10 people already in the building for confession. Someone will be monitoring the number of people present and will let you know when you can enter.

In the hallway, a stop sign will indicate where the penitent “on deck” (the next in line) should wait. The St. Teresa Room is located at the end of the hallway. When you see the penitent before you has exited the building, you can proceed to enter the room. Please do not close the door behind you. The door to the St. Teresa room will remain open so no one touches it on their way in or out. The exit doors will also remain open so no one is touching them either. The open doors allow for greater air movement and prevent any surface contamination thus eliminating the need to sanitize all the door knobs after each confession. To prevent confessions from being heard by anyone waiting down the hall, we will play chant music in the hallway.

In the St. Teresa Room, there will be yellow tape on the carpet indicating where you need to stand. We cannot have a kneeler or chair as these would need to be sanitized after each individual confession. A screen will be set between the priest and the penitent, so all confessions will be anonymous. Please stay on the yellow tape mark and do not go around the screen. All confessions will be heard behind the screen and none will be permitted to confess “face to face”.

When your confession is complete, please exit the room and make sure the person waiting in line knows it is their turn. Please exit the the building using the doors on your left. (They will remain open). Your penance can be said in the main parking lot facing our Eucharistic Lord Who remains in the 2nd story window.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in these modified procedures. They are in place to comply with the government’s standards and for everyone’s protection.

Confessions will continue in this manner until further notice.

We have added Saturday morning Confessions from 9:30-10:30AM back to our schedule and will be using these same procedures.

A PRAYER FOR PROTECTION IN TIME OF PANDEMIC

O Mary, you always brighten our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the Cross, took part in Jesus’ pain while remaining steadfast in faith. O loving Mother, you know what we need, and we are confident you will provide for us as at Cana in Galilee. Intercede for us with your Son Jesus, the Divine Physician, for those who have fallen ill, for those who are vulnerable, and for those who have died. Intercede also for those charged with protecting the health and safety of others and for those who are tending to the sick and seeking a cure. Help us, O Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who took upon Himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows, so as to lead us, through the Cross, to the glory of the Resurrection. Amen. Under thy protection we seek refuge, O Holy Mother of God. In our needs, despise not our petitions, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Pray the Rosary every day

Below is a traditional prayer of spiritual communion. Use these words, or similar words that come from your heart, in order to receive Our Lord spiritually until the time that we can receive Him again in the Holy Eucharist.

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in

the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire

to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment

receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

This week, we learn about St. Acacius who was also martyred in the early days of the Church in the 4th century. St. Acacius was a native of Cappadocia and as a youth joined the Roman army during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. He eventually attained the rank of captain. One day, when leading his troops against the enemy, he heard a voice saying to him, "Call on the help of the God of Christians!"

This was the beginning of his conversion. Shortly thereafter, Acacius was instructed and was baptized, becoming a member of the mystical Body of Christ. Filled with a zeal and love for his friends, the Captain sought to share his newfound treasure with the pagan soldiers in the Roman Army. Eventually, the emperor heard of these conversions happening among his troops and he immediately had Acacius thrown into prison. When the brave Captain refused to sacrifice to the pagan idols, he was placed upon the torturer’s rack, then bound to a post and scourged. When all these tortures failed to change Acacius’ mind, he was brought before the Tribune, or Colonel, Bibianus. "My name is Christian," the saint replied, "because I am a follower of Christ, but men call me Acacius. My country is Cappadocia. There my parents lived; there I was converted to the Christian faith, and was so inspired by the combats and sufferings of the Christian martyrs that I am resolved to shed my blood for Christ to attain Heaven." Bibianus ordered Acacius to be beaten with lead clubs, after which he was loaded with chains and returned to the prison. After he had been in prison 7 days, Bibianus was called to Byzantium. The Tribune ordered all of the prisoners to be taken to Byzantium as well. On the journey, Acacius suffered greatly. His entire body was covered with wounds and his chains aggravated and intensified his injuries. The roads were extremely difficult to travel upon and the guards were especially cruel. During this painful journey, as Acacius was praying to God for strength, a voice from the clouds answered him, "Acacius, be firm!" Everyone heard it, and the soldiers of the guard were terrified. Many of the prisoners were converted by the heavenly voice. The next day, some of the converts were given a vision of several men in shining armor speaking to Acacius while washing his wounds and healing them. As a result of this miraculous healing, no scar remained on the saint’s body. After they arrived in Byzantium, the saint was again cast into prison, and after 7 days dragged before the judge. Again, neither promises nor the cruelest torments shook the brave man’s constancy. Faced with this defeat, the judge sent the Acacius to Flaccius, the Proconsul of Thracia. Flaccius had Acacius imprisoned for 5 days. During this time, the Proconsul read the records of all the trials and tortures suffered by Acacius. God has the final word, and Acacius had already suffered greatly proving himself worthy of the reward awaiting him. There were no further torments executed on the prisoner. Flaccius simply ordered for him to be beheaded. Acacius was able to receive his long cherished desire-- death for Christ! Thus, his earthly life ended and his everlasting life began on May 8, in the year 311AD. He is the patron saint of those who suffer from headaches

Regina Caeli

During the Easter season, the words of the hymn “Regina Caeli” (Queen of Heaven) are substituted for the Angelus prayer,

traditionally recited at 6 am, 12 noon and 6 pm.

V: Queen of Heaven, rejoice, Alleluia. R: The Son you merited to bear, Alleluia.

V: Has risen as He said, Alleluia. R: Pray to God for us, Alleluia.

V: Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, Alleluia. R: For the Lord has truly risen, Alleluia. Let us pray- God of life, you have given joy to the world by the resurrection of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Through the prayers of his mother, the Virgin Mary, bring us to the happiness of Eternal Life. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
