General Session: Views from Capitol Hill on Federal Immigration Reform The nation’s schools work to educate the most diverse student population in history, providing equitable access and ensuring that all students are educated to reach their greatest learning potential. Undocumented students previously protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program is a major issue being debated by Congress and the Administration to address the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996. III-2 ESSA Implementation: Developing Equitable Local ESSA Plans

As states secure final approval from the U.S. Department of Education (USED) for the required Statewide ESSA Plans, local leaders can take the opportunity to develop and submit local ESSA plans to their state for approval. Approved plans are required for school districts to continue receiving Title I-Part A funding, but even more important, local school boards have the opportunity to use their plans as a basis for directing the ESSA implementation process and address a variety of local needs that will improve student outcomes. Learn about new guidance NSBA released surrounding the local ESSA plan development and supporting local school board leadership as the new law moves from the state to a locally-driven process.
