Paddy Cultivation in Shahdol• Madhya Pradesh Rural Livelihoods Project initiated an innovative system of
rice cultivation (SRI) method among farmers.
• In kharif 2010-11, 5,775 farmers are adopting this method for cultivation of
paddy.
• The Department of Agriculture is providing them with marker on 50% grant.
• But not every farmers could afford the 50% amount to buy these markers.
• Many times in the puddled field, this marker could not put the visual mark.
Paddy Cultivation in Shahdol
• Bamboo and rope made of straw are easily
available to the farmers.
• Farmers devised their own paddy marker for
maintaining plant-to-plant and row-to-row
distance.
• Ravi Shankar Patel, Jhiriya Tola, a farmer in
Bijaha cluster, made his bamboo marker by
puting cut marks on a straight bamboo stick.
• Marker costs only 70 Rs. and weighs 27 kg.
• Sunil Singh and Mithayee Lal, Antrauti, farmers of Ghunghuta cluster, modified this model to be lighter and so it could be handled by any woman labour. The cost is Rs. 50 and weight is 18 kg.
Paddy Cultivation in Shahdol
• Nanbai and Senbai, women farmers of Dhakar
village, cluster Ghunghuta, designed a square
type of bamboo model shown here using a
local variety of bamboo.
• This model is still lighter -- only 12 kg -- and
the cost is nothing.
Paddy Cultivation in Shahdol• Buddhilal ,village cluster Lakhwariya, could
not find much bamboo. So he used straw rope and made a beautiful design.
• This is also lighter and can be handled by women labourers.
