President’s notes
Happy New Year everyone! Most of you know me and for those who don’t here goes. I have been an artist all my life I suppose. My first real painting project was
when I painted our dog “Mittsie” blue. I was about four and my parents and grandparents were building on our house in Visalia, California. I was of course helping. So they said leave the paint brushes alone or else!! No one mentioned a stick. The dog seemed willing to participate so I scrubbed lovely turquoise blue (oil based enamel) paint backwards into his coat. If I say so myself he looked really great, performance art at its finest! My parents were not enthusiastic art lovers at that point in my career.Years later I found watercolor, the Denver Botanic Gardens and as they say the rest is history. Oh, in the mean time, I spent most of my life getting degrees in science and economics, raising my family and running a bio-tech company, for most of my adult life. Art sort of took a back seat from time to time. In fact most of the time.Life has sort of hit a smooth spot in the road of life and this is my year to paint, paint and more paint. I took a class from Libby once and she wanted us to draw at least ten minutes a day. What good advice, thanks again Libby (maybe this is the year I will actually do it). Some of us make New Year’s resolutions, some of us think about making them and never do. What a good way to start this year! Some of us in this organization are interested in just having fun and painting, some have more of a desire to see us in more serious shows, fun should not have to be at cross purposes with professionalism. There is a place for all of us in RMSBA. The coming year may hold some great places for us to show our creations, opportunities to learn, to grow, and to stretch our creative muscles! If there is a motto I would like to think about this coming year it would be “Art should be FUN!! Art should enrich our lives, not make our lives crazy (or crazier, depending on whom you are). I hope as your new president I can at least be a good example of these thoughts. Let’s paint, let’s draw, let’s enjoy the gift we all have and share. ART …

The spring 2010 program will kick off our theme for the year, herbs. As many of us will be participating in the “Culpeper’s Medicinal Herbs” show, we will benefit from Mary Barnes’ expertise on the subject. Mary will present some interesting historical background on Culpeper and his herbal medical cures. She will be able to answer last minute questions you may have about how you wish to portray your particular herb. We will meet on February 21, 2010 at the Denver Botanic Gardens in Classroom C from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. This is a little earlier than our usual spring meeting but we want to get it in before the show entry deadline. This juried show will be held at the Dairy in Boulder, CO.
The summer 2010 meeting will be held at the Denver Botanic Gardens on June 13th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This meeting’s program is an herbal cooking class held by Susan Evans, www.chrysalisherbs.com. (sampling the results and handouts are included in the class price/ $20.00) The class will be limited to 20. Sign up deadline is June 6.
In the fall we will gather at an art supplies warehouse in Denver that Susi Olson discovered. She and Carol Till have met with the owner and worked up an exciting deal for us. We can meet there September 12th or 19th. The date will be coordinated to avoid the annual ASBA meeting. Details will be announced later.
At our winter 2010 meeting, we will celebrate the close of the year by gathering at Susi Olson’s new home (address and details will be announced at a later date) on December 12, 2010, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Visit with the RMSBA colleagues you may not have seen for a while, meet new members, talk about shows and art in general. Bring the latest works you would like to share as well as a favorite hors d’ouvres or sweets for the season. We will hold elections for openings on the RMSBA Board, and invite all members to participate in committee work. Please think about how you might participate!

RMSBa Holiday Party/MeetingMinutes held December 6, 2009
Location: Susan Rubin’s home, DenverDocumented by: Renee Jorgensen 24 RMSBA members attended the 2009 Christmas Meeting, including three guests: Paneyoti Kelaidis girlfriend Jan, Anna H. (standing in for Mom Mervi Hjelmroos-Koski. New RMSBA fee for membership dues: $90.00 and must be paid by March to remain in membership status. Be thinking about the ASBA Show next year in New York. It is titled “Economic Botany” and will represent what botanicals are used for through out our economy: i.e. cotton, linen, food, medicine, other fibers etc. Terry Ruiter encouraged each of us to consider doing a piece and submitting it to this show. Go to the ASBA website for more details. Entries will be due in the Spring. At least it will have a new look and/or contain updates. Katie needs new art, artist interviews, and articles sent to her for future newsletters. Terry Ruiter is proposing the ASBA annual conference be held in Denver in 2014. Cathy Imel is a great consultant for hosting these big events. We will call on her expertise to help guide our group. Ann Fleming is checking with the DAM for a show to be held during the proposed convention. Everyone was up for the idea. ASBA Annual Meeting will be in Pittsburgh in 2010. Exhibit Updates: Carol TillSteamboat Art Museum logged 4,148 viewers to have viewed the RARE show. The Rare Ft. Lewis Campus Show: CONIPS, the 4 Corners group, and the Plateau Group are excited about the show and planning field trips and other activities to compliment it. Manitou Show will start July 1 thru September 2010.
Katie Nichols talked about considering doing a new run of Rare greeting cards. They are selling well. Dairy Show: Call for Entries passed out and list of plants already taken. There are still more plants available. The Director of the Dairy will be the judge and is very detail oriented. Review carefully the call for entries. Treasurer: Vickie MacWilliam added a note that we have covered all of the costs on the Rare catalogs, t-shirts and cards. This is a very good sign! All money from sales coming in at this point is a benefit to the RMSBA. Programs for 2010: Annie Reiser Spring: Mary Barnes details on the Culpeper Show - Feb. 21 held in Classroom C at DBG - 1 - 4pm Summer: Susan Evans - Cooking with Herbs: will charge $20.00 per person, room for 20 people, will be held at the Morrison Center at DBG. Fall: Susie Olsen - Art Supply Field Trip to Allied Arts. Charge $5.00 which provides a gift certificate for $5.00 in free materials (a goody bag). More information at a later date. RMSBA Mt. Evans Artists' Retreat 2010
July 22-24, 2010
n't miss this wonderful opportunity to study with Angela at the DenverUniversity High Altitude Research Lodge on Mt. Evans. These workshops areheld the third week of July to provide you with the maximum Rocky MountainHigh Experience. This is the weekend for seeing wildflowers in fullbloom. The mountain is lush this time of year.

3. A nice selection of entrees and snacks, which includes vegetarian (not vegan) choices atevery meal, is provided. All meals are served buffet-style. The lodge is large, well furnished and comfortable, and there'll be time for peerinteraction, hiking and hanging out! Classes are held in the Lab, with full-spectrum lightingand drawing boards provided. The workshop is limited to 15 participants. Plan to arrive on the first day of your workshop around 9:00 AM to check in and stowyour gear. Classes begin at 10:00 AM on Day One, 9:00 AM on Days 2 and 3. Lunch breaksare 1 hour, and there is ample time and daylight for field sketching or other outdooractivities. Classes end at 5:00 PM Days 1 and 2, and at 4:00 PM on Day 3 of the workshop.

the Pinery Show(Editor’s note)In the previous newsletter there was a write up about the success of the Pinery Show. However, some details were not included about where and when the show took place. Here are the details of the show directly from The Pinery’s Web site - this is information about the 2009 show, not the 2010 show.
2009 Pinery Art ShowAll artists of all ages – Save the date!!August 15, 2009 - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.at Lakeshore Park
The 8th Pinery Art Show will be held in conjunction with the Pinery Picnic again this year. We invite you to SAVE THE DATE of August 15 and plan to not only display your artwork, but sell it to the attendees and take orders too! Admission is $25 for all artists. You do not need to be a Pinery resident to submit artwork. It would be most appreciated if interested artists would apply as early as possible as physical space is limited to 30 participants!
Artist Selection We are looking for Artwork pieces only which would include, but not limited to: oil painting, acrylic painting, watercolor painting, drawings of various media, mixed media, photography, pottery, sculpture, glassware and custom gold & silver jewelry. Pre-Selection of artists will be determined by July 20. Artists are asked to provide 2-3 digital pictures or a web site, indicative of your artwork. Please email your entries along with your name and phone number, as soon as possible to: [email protected]. You will be notified of your acceptance within a week of receiving. This year there will be a young artists category for up to 12 years old and one for 13-18 years old. Those in the young artist category may submit 2 pieces for no charge.
What is Provided? The PHA will provide your tent and new grid work for display. In the event you have display materials for your art, we welcome the contribution of easels, tables and tents. Additional information will be in forthcoming newsletters and in communication to the artists. We look forward to seeing your artwork!
What else are we looking for? Community involvement. In the tough times we are experiencing, this is a great opportunity to meet fellow neighbors, be a part of a day of fun, entertainment, lunch and laughs.We would like to provide face painting, shirt stenciling and/or finger/hand painting on t-shirts. How and why did you become interested in Botanical Illustration? In 1990, a friend asked me to come to a drawing class at the Gardens with her. I thought botanical illustration sounded boooring, but I went for her. She lasted two classes, but my fate was sealed – I never looked back!
What has been the piece of work that you are most happy about?In 2001, I took a leap away from traditional BI with a piece I titled “Still, life.” It is a group of 7 green pears and one red pear in very strong light. I did the piece for a political/women’s issues show and it represented the incidence of breast cancer at that moment. I love that piece because it gave me the impetus to see botanical work as a more contemporary, relevant genre and somehow less locked into being historical and sweet. Since then, I’ve had a different idea of what BI has to say.
What are your other interests; gardening, etc.?Oh my gosh, where to start? I like gardening, reading, sewing, knitting (yes, I probably was born in the wrong century), teaching, photography, writing, walking, hiking, building things, learning anything new, and mostly TRAVEL! I start to feel twitchy if I don’t leave the country at least once a year.
What is the medium that you really enjoy and easily flow with?I love graphite and colored pencil. I love the look and feel of line and the challenge of taking a little dot the size of a sharp pencil point and turning it into a full-blown portrait of my subject.
Do you have your certificate from DBG in Botanical Illustration? Yes, I received a certificate in 1991 and again in 1992.
Do you have a challenge to accomplish?I love a challenge. This is a pretty boring genre without it. I am always reaching for new ways to express a view of plants. I use new media and technology combined with traditional methods, create themes for series of work, anything to help push the boundaries of botanical art. Maybe finding irony without losing beauty is the biggest challenge.
What are the other items in your life that you would like to share?Lots of people don’t know that in my nefarious past I have

been an Outward Bound instructor, a glider pilot, a radio announcer, a product designer, a headhunter, a t.v. set designer, and the first home stager. I lived in England for 2 1/2 years and have spent time in 32 countries.
Who/what is your inspiration/muse?I am inspired by the thrill of a new idea. My human inspiration is my mother, who was a novelist, a watercolor painter, and the smartest, funniest person I’ve ever known.
What is your favorite plant/flower? That’s like having to choose between your children! I like plants big, little, smooth, spiky, funky and fair. When I was a little girl, my favorite flower was Fairy Slipper, the little pink Calypso bulbosa orchids we’d find beneath the trees at our mountain cabin. I thought they carried magic. I still get a little thrill when I find one.

Culpeper’s Medicinal Herbs Date of show: May 14- June 18, 2010
Location: The Dairy Center for the Arts, 2590 Walnut Street, Boulder, Colorado
Exhibit Description: The exhibit will be a collection of botanical illustrations based on medicinal herbs that Nicholas Culpeper described in his seventeenth century publication which are still in use today.
Eligibility: RMSBA members with 2010 dues paid.
Eligible Submissions: Illustrations of herbs that are listed in Culpeper publications still in medicinal use today. (This does not include Native American or South American native cures which are not in the Culpepper publications) Contact Mary Barnes ([email protected] ) if you have questions about this. All work must be realistic and bo-tanically accurate. Only two-dimensional original artworks of botanical subjects will be accepted. No animals, people, pottery, tools, buildings, props, man-made objects or other non-plant elements allowed. A Master List of plant choices is being kept by Mary Barnes ([email protected] ) to avoid duplicate entries. Please contact Mary with your choice.
Jury: Entries will be vetted for quality, conformity to theme and space available. The Curator of The Dairy Center for the Arts will review all submitted work for quality.
Presentation: Artwork that fits in a 16 x 20 (inner dimension) frame must be matted by the artist with white or off-white mat. It must also have a foam core backing. The artwork may be vertical or horizontal. In order to present a more dynamic show, the artwork will be submitted unframed and will be framed in identical frames by RMSBA.
Media: All images should be of work executed by hand in traditional botanical media. The subject plant must be the prominent feature of the work.
Labeling: DO NOT label your artwork with the common or botanical name or include any writing other than your signature.
Frame label: Each item must be labeled on the back of the frame with artist’s name, title, medium, contact informa-tion and price. RMSBA will provide educational gallery labels that describe each herb’s medical use and application.
Exhibit Information: The exhibit will be at the Dairy Center for the Arts, 2590 Walnut Street in Boulder, CO. The gallery does not carry insurance on artwork. Individual artists are responsible for their own insurance.
Publicity: If accepted, your images may be used in publicity related to the exhibition.
Sale of Artwork: Sales are allowed. The Dairy Center handles delivery of sales. They take 35% commission on all sales. Artwork may not be removed until the close of the exhibition.

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, will notice that the membership dues have increased to $90.00, as the result of ASBA, the parent organization, needing to raise dues because of the challenging financial times. As discussed in our recent Board Meeting, RMSBA had the option to pass through the $25.00 ASBA increase. The RMSBA Board opted to reduce the chapter dues from $20.00 to $15.00 for the benefit of our members.
