Meyerland PVA MS Publishes First Ever Middle School Ethics Bowl Website!

Meyerland PVA MS continues to be the pioneering school in the nation and the world for Middle School Ethics Bowl.

Two years ago Meyerland PVA MS, then known as Johnston MS, competed in the first ever inter-middle school Ethics

Bowl match with the John Cooper School (see related article). Now Meyerland PVA MS continues as first in the nation

with the launch of the Middle School Ethics Bowl webpage. Meyerland PVA MS Ethics Bowl coach, Deric Barber, in

collaboration with the National High School Ethics Bowl in North Carolina, the director of the Houston High School

Ethics Bowl and John Cooper School coach, Adam Valenstein, along with help from professor and author of “Ethics in a

Nutshell” Dr. Matt Deaton, worked together to provide the information for the website. Our own Mr. George Mathews

supplied the website design. The website provides information for everything concerning Middle School Ethics Bowl

including information about the Ethics Bowl, rule modifications for Middle School Ethics Bowl (currently under

discussion/construction), information for potential middle school Ethics Bowl coaches, such as what to teach middle

school Ethics Bowlers and how to prepare for competitions, the cases that will be used for the 2016-2017 school year,

testimonials and research findings of how philosophical discussion like that found in the Ethics Bowl helps middle school

Parents and students: It is essential that students enrolled at MPVAMS be at school on

time, 8:00 a.m., and prepared for class every day. Being present and punctual are

important now and will continue to be important in the business world and life in general.

Build these habits now!

HOMECOMING 2016 – 2017!

Homecoming week was a blast and everyone involved really enjoyed all the festivities. From the many Spirit Days,

starting October 6th to the Homecoming Dance on October 14

th, there were smiles and good times all around. Students

took part in: Dress from the 70s Day; Favorite Cartoon Character T-Shirt Day; Twin Day (dressing identically as

someone else); Crazy Sock Day/Jersey Day. The only break in the action was Fall Holiday. On Thursday there was a

rousing Pep Rally followed by a tailgate party and the game.

At the Homecoming game, MEYERLAND played WEST BRIAR. The crowd was excited. The cheer leaders cheered.

(The weather was lovely.) Our team was fired up! Game on!

The end result: A tie score -- Meyerland 19 and West Briar 19. (In middle school when the clock hits zero the final score

stands; there is no overtime.) At half time, the Homecoming Royalty Court winners were announced. 8

Fall Orchestra Concert Review

The Fall Concert, held October 18, was cause for happy ears. The two top Meyerland PVA orchestras performed.

After a short Orchestra Parent Association meeting, the Advanced Orchestra B (4th period) took to the stage. It performed

Shadow Dance, by Richard Meyer, Apollo Suite, 1. Prelude, by Merle J. Isaac, and Sahara Crossing by Richard Meyer.

They were all pleasingly performed evoking a general sense of goodness and contentment in the audience. Yes, happy

ears.

There was a brief intermission during which one could buy refreshments, a fundraiser by the Orchestra Parent Association

to support the upcoming orchestra trip to Florida.

Then Advanced Orchestra A (6th period) performed Danse Macabre, by Camille Saint-Saens (arranged by James Red

McLeod). This particular piece is one of my favorites. It was beautifully rendered.

Danse was followed by delicate yet exciting Sonatina, by Giacchino Rossini ( trans. By Marcus D. Dowty), the bold

Granada, by Ernesto Lecuona (arranged by John Burk Arnesto), suspenseful Aria from Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, by

Heitor Villa-Lobos (arranged by Jamin Hoffman) and, elegant and inviting Tango: Por una Cabeza, by Carolos Gardel

(Arranged by Matthes Naughtin).

Orchestra Director Altimarano had mentioned there was a surprise coming, at one point. Roughly two thirds of the way

through Tango, eight female dancers came on to the stage, gracefully moving to the music. Then additional surprise,

Tobias Rytting, a cellist for Adv. Orchestra A and non-magnet dance student, came out and danced with one of the young

women. What a wonderful surprise! I’ve seen dozens of concerts over the years done by many HISD school orchestras.

Never have I seen dancers magically appear like frosting on a musical cupcake. Beautiful performance, Dancers!

Beautiful performance, Orchestra! Happy ears AND eyes!

Thank you, performers for a wonderful Fall Concert! Thank you, Mr. A for directing them.

If you missed this performance, DVDs and CDs are available for purchase.

Notes from the October 18th

Professional Learning Community

Candace Tillman, from Nick Finnegan Counseling, addressed the issue of “Self Harm”. Symptoms are sadness,

depression and anxiety. A person self harms to:

alleviate stress

have the physical pain override the emotional pain

or, if numb, cause pain to feel something

open communication – cry for help

What to do next?

The parent (or teacher or counselor) should try to help the teen figure out how to cope.

Do not punish the teen; it won’t help.

Consider therapy and give the teen a chance to choose who to see. It will make them feel in control.

Talking with the teen eye to eye can be intimidating. Driving in the car, working along side the teen, both situations allow

for discussion without direct eye contact.

A non-medicinal way of helping is to stimulate endorphins. Endorphins are a natural chemical produced by the body

through exercise. Endorphins cause feelings of positivity.

Depression is described as withdrawal as noted by:

stopping of favorite activities

loss of appetite

disrupted sleep patterns

moodiness

decrease in academic performance

hopelessness about the future

low energy

social withdrawal

Depression leads to anxiety.

Parents need to open up their relationship with their teen. They need to empathize. They should encourage their teen to

find a mentor. They need to know the teen must fix the problem, the parent can’t. The parent can be watchful and guide.

Page 9: 10410 Manhattan, Houston TX 77096-5202 Tel. 713-726-3616 Fax … · 2019-10-24 · Heitor Villa-Lobos (arranged by Jamin Hoffman) and, elegant and inviting Tango: Por una Cabeza,

If a therapist is needed, find one. Since Obamacare came into being, insurance must cover therapy to some extent.

Finally, parents need to take care of themselves. If the parent’s health slips or fails, he/she will be useless to their teen.

Counselors at Meyerland have contact information for the Finnegan group.

Notes from the October 18th

Meyerland PTO Meeting

Traffic issues

Steve Fowlkes of the Meyerland Home Owners Association addressed the problem of high traffic times, drop-off and

pick-up, and how the neighborhood surrounding Meyerland PVAMS is adversely affected.

Five or six years ago a traffic study was performed and the various no parking signs were placed alerting people not to

park is particular areas during congested times. Since those studies, enrollment has grown fairly dramatically and traffic

has increased. He passed around a chart showing the growth of the student population.

People have been seen ignoring the parking signs rendering the streets impassable except for one lane.

The Meyerland HOA finally hired two police officers to ease the traffic. The situation really calls for three officers. The

cost per week for the extra officers is $1,275. Meyerland HOA can’t afford to pay beyond December 31st. Fowlkes was

at the meeting to ask for help from the school and/or PTO to pay for the officers.

A discussion ensued. Fowlkes mentioned asking MPVAMS families to pay $5/family/month to pay for the extra police

presence. There was no method of payment collection. The idea of a Go Fund Me site was broached by PTO President

Leach. It would be up to the Meyerland HOA to set one up. The PTO can’t do anything with funding unless a proposal is

sent to it to assess. Mr. Sanders said HISD knows there is a problem but funding is short. The idea that if the city would

re-set the lights at Willowbend at Chimney Rock and also Willowbend at Bellfort to coordinate better during high traffic

times, it would help. With Parker Elementary and Kolter Elementary so near MPVAMS, their traffic is added to the

tumult. Mr. Sanders described the traffic situation as needing “a delicate balance.” Sanders also said that “parent voices”

are more influential at HISD than just his “Principal Sanders” voice. Fowlkes and Sanders agreed that if enough people

phone 3-1-1, the city’s complaint line, that the city will send out people to investigate and ideally resolve the problem.

Fowlkes said he’d report to his board about what was discussed. In the meantime, parents should call the 3-1-1 and

complain.

School Pay

School Pay is an easy way to pay Magnet and other fees at MPVAMS.

Go to http://www.houstonisd.org/Page/78513 and click on “School

Pay”. The School Pay site will appear and follow the directions from

there.

School Pay saves our students from the burden of carrying large

amounts of money on campus to pay for fees and such.

Recapture

The subject of Recapture was discussed. Recapture is the “Robin Hood” law that was set up several years ago. It intends

to take from the rich school districts and give to the poor school districts.

There is no easy answer for how to vote on the November 8th ballot. Recapture has to do with authorizing, or not

authorizing, HISD to pay the State of Texas a whopping $162 million because on paper HISD looks like a “wealthy”

school district. The actual demographics of the student population are not figured into the equation. HISD is not, for all

intents and purposes, a rich school district. Mr. Sanders, who is required to be neutral, mentioned the Meyerland budget

will be cut by $400,000 next school year if the voters vote yes. HISD has a video describing the impact of the law at

houstonisd.org/recapture.

Greyhound Bash (Event will be over by the time this newsletter goes to press.)

Food and drink donations are needed for the Bash. Items should be left in Ms. Grosscope’s classroom.

ONGOING TRAFFIC WOES!

PARENTS, PLEASE PAY ATTENTION!

The MPVAMS student population is roughly 1,722 this year. Approximately one third is 6th

graders. School starts at 8 a.m. and the

traffic congestion has been abysmal since the school year started.

With my 8th

grade parent perspective, I remember the previous two years having extraordinary traffic congestion for only the first

three weeks. Then routines were magically set and drop-off and pick-up were no longer an issue. Why there is no such relief this year

is a mystery.

One parent told me, “I have seen students walking across Manhattan at locations other than the crosswalk. Today I saw a girl almost

get hit by a car. Parents are also dropping their kids off on the opposite side of Manhattan from the school, forcing them to cross the

street unsafely.” I have witnessed similar situations. How some parents can think their students can safely jaywalk across Manhattan

through the bumper to bumper traffic is also a mystery. They may think their children are little angels, but do they really want to

jettison them to the afterlife? Do they really think all of the other parents are going to watch out for their student to make up for their

own carelessness? Are the students’ lives over-insured and the parents want them dead to collect? When nothing makes sense,

whimsy follows.

MPVAMS has a carpool line in front of the school. Ideally, it should be a stop, drop-off the student, leave the area zone. A parent

told me, “Yesterday I saw two cars parked on Manhattan in front of school with no passengers inside. This caused a tremendous back

log on Manhattan and Wigton of cars dropping off students.” I’ve seen that and also, the cars standing at the curb while a drawn out

parent-teen conversation drones on. The line can’t move. Getting into the left lane, driving past, and getting into the right lane can be

dicey. If the “subject” was so important, why wait till just before drop-off to inconvenience and endanger all the people behind you?

If you see yourself described in the above situations, please adjust your behavior. Think SAFETY FIRST and BE CONSIDERATE

OF OTHERS!

We are ALL members of the Meyerland Family. We can do this.

The After-Care Corner

The After-Care Program (“ACP”) at Meyerland Performing and Visual Arts Middle School is a PTO-sponsored program

– so all money goes right back to the PTO which benefits the school, as well as your children.

We have a hugely successful program partly due to the dedication of the fine teachers involved in this program. Pictured

below is Ms. Calvin helping Asia with her homework. Ms. Calvin teaches 8th grade US History in House A. Being an 8

th

grade teacher helps her get to know the students for two years before she will have some of them in her class. We have

found this to be beneficial in many ways.

We have several ACP options available: 5 days per week through 1 day per week. There is also a drop-in option. Rates

are available on the PTO website in the After-Care section. Payments may be made by check, money order, cash or

Chase QuickPaySM

. If you haven’t checked out the After-Care section of the PTO website, be sure to do so. You will

find articles and pictures from last year, as well as additional information about the program.

If you are interested in participating in this program, please contact me at [email protected].
