CERTIFICATE OF CRASHWORTHINESS

NCHRP REPORT 350 CATEGORY 1 WORK ZONE DEVICES

This letter, known as Self-Certification Letter “WBD-1”, will consist of this page, the product brochure headed “EZ-Grab Wide Body Delineator” and Drawing 03-755 Rev B, dated 4-14-2009 on my title block. The certification applies to all products and variations identified and illustrated on these 3 pages. The letter refers to the device known within our company as the “Wide-Body Delineator”, comprised of a generally cylindrical blow-molded form having a hexagonal base and two integral grips, with a height of 44-1/4 in to the top of the handles and 39-7/16 to the top of the cylindrical portion and a width of Ø13 in at the top, stepping out 4 times to Ø14-1/2 toward the integral base; that being a stubby Ø16-1/2 in cylinder set on the hexagonal flange, 18 in on flats and 20-1/2 inches on points. A light can be attached at a ledge either towards the front or the back. One grip has a series of special purpose protrusions; the other does not. The WBD is molded from HDPE resin with UV inhibitors added. The weight of the bare drum is 6.3 lb; the addition of a common light-weight warning light of 3.3 lb plus the bolt and an allowance for sheeting still makes for a sum of 9.9 lb. The drums will be used with Ø24 inch diameter crumb rubber ring bases of 20 lb or 30 lb in weight and are designed to break free from the bases upon impact. Although these devices were not subjected to crash testing, an engineering study was conducted and is on file for examination by appropriate parties. In this, the WBD devices were compared to existing devices with similar heights and weights, which had themselves been found to be compliant with the crash test requirements of NCHRP Report 350. From that analysis, it was concluded that these WBD's will perform satisfactorily in field applications and therefore they are Self-Certified as Crashworthy and would be expected to be found to be acceptable for use on the NHS when proposed by a state. Please cooperate with FHWA regulations which state that this letter shall not be reproduced except in full. All three pages are necessary to properly identify the subject devices. Sincerely, John I.
