Easter SundayMarch 27, 2016

Dear Parishioners and Friends,It is my delight to welcome all of you here as we celebrate together the Lord’s Resurrection.

All during Lent, we as a community have been preparing by prayer, fasting and almsgiving for the celebration of the Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection. Let me share with you some of the ways we have been preparing:

• With the help of 300 small booklets called ”Five Minutes with the Word,”parishioners have spent a few minutes each day reading scripture and reflecting on this season of God’s grace.

• Fasting is not something we tend to like doing, but it is one of the tried and true ways of drawing nearer to God. What was encouraged this year was not so much giving something up as doing something positive for others. The Corporal Works of Mercy come to mind. This apporach could vary greatly from one person to another.

• The parish has been involved with two very concrete ways of participating in alsmgiving. We have, as in the past, supported Operation Rice Bowl, whereby funds are collected for the

Catholic Relief Services. This year 120 people of all ages (from 4-90) spent two hours preparing 17,000 meals for “Stop Hunger Now.” It was an

amazing event.

All during Lent, there were three wooden block boxes in front of the altar. Last Sunday the blocks were filled with palms to symbolize the growth we as a community have expereienced over the last 40 days.

This year’s theme of Generations of Faith (“GOF”) has been Social Justice. Between 425-500 people have gathered for three festivals.

The two hour sessions have included a full meal and three different tracks that correspond to age groups in attendance (Adults, Teens & Families). The next festival is in April.

As you can see our community is alive and growing. May I invite you to join with your sisters and brothers in celebrating this special “Year of Mercy” I leave you with the words of Jesus: “Come and See.”

May peace be given you

FIRST COMMUNION RETREATLast Saturday our young parishioners preparing for First Communion spent the morning baking bread, tasting the Eucharist bread, making banners and in general getting ready for the special time ahead at the end of April. As you can see from the photos, they had a lot of fun too! Please keep these wonderful children and their families in your prayers!

MY BROTHER’S TABLE HELP!!For the past 30 years, Incarnation parishioners have been volunteering at "My Brothers Table," a soup kitchen in Lynn, serving the poor and homeless.  Their mission, along with the help of volunteers, is to feed every guest who comes to their door with dignity, humor, love and kindness.

When I first joined this volunteer core of  parishioners 13 years ago, we were a group of 12. But now, due to age and illness, our numbers have dwindled. We are now down to only two parishioners attending on a regular basis and two

who have moved away but continue to join us.  WE NEED YOUR HELP!

The time involved is the first Saturday of every month from 12:30-4 PM.  If enough parishioners volunteer we could split up and alternate months.Unless we have a committed number of volunteers, sadly, we will have to discontinue our service to "My Brothers Table."

If you are new to the area or to our parish, volunteering at "My Brothers Table" is a great way to meet and connect with like-minded people. I, personally, have made some wonderful friendships with my fellow volunteers. Please consider donating your time to this very worthy and

rewarding cause.! ! ! ! ! ! Kay Lavoie

HALLMARK HEALTH VNA AND HOSPICE Hallmark Health VNA and Hospice will be holding a training program for those interested in becoming a hospice volunteer.  The training will begin in March and will be held over the course of five weeks at the agency’s office in Malden. A hospice volunteer does not provide clinical or personal care. They perform tasks to assist the patient and provide relief for family members who may simply need to attend to other duties or leave home for a few hours. Please call Allison Caplin at (781) 338-7863 for further information. Also, Hallmark Health VNA and Hospice is seeking volunteers to help with office duties such as filing, updating databases, mailings, etc. If you have a couple of hours during the week and would like to volunteer, please call Allison Caplin at (781) 338-7863.

MARCH 27, 2016Easter Should Be an Eye OpenerEaster is mostly about waking up. It’s Easter when God and spring susurrate through the veins of nature giving frozen earth and frozen hearts a wake-up call. That call is ever needed. The human proclivity is towards sleep. Without outside revelation, the trumpet blast announcing resurrection, a divine force opening tombs, and God whispering new life inside of us, our preoccupations and obsessions invariably render us blind as bats—left to fly by radar.

Easter is about eyesight, seeing. George Orwell once summarized our difficulties in this area: “A rather cruel trick I once played on a wasp. He was sucking jam on my plate and I cut him in half. He

"Here, then, is the reason for the Jubilee: because this is the time for mercy. It is the

favorable time to heal wounds, a time not to be weary of meeting all those who are waiting to see and to touch with their hands the signs of the closeness of God, a time to offer

everyone, everyone, the way of forgiveness and reconciliation. May the Mother of God open our eyes, so that we may comprehend the task to which we have been called; and may

she obtain for us the grace to experience this Jubilee of Mercy as faithful and fruitful witnesses of Christ.”

paid no attention, merely went on with his meal, while a tiny stream of jam trickled out of his severed esophagus. Only when he tried to fly away did he grasp the dreadful thing that had happened to him. It is the same with us. The thing that has been cut away is our soul and there is a period of time…during which we do not notice it.” (G. Orwell, Collected Essays, Vol. II, Page 15)

It’s a strange irony! We spend our lives searching for life in its rarity and we hardly notice Easter and spring. It’s Easter and we are heavy in spirit. Resurrection is all around and we are feeling old! Why? Why so blind to spring and resurrection?

Classical spiritual writers have always affirmed a connection between morality and epistemology. That’s a sophisticated way of saying that how we live morally affects our eyesight, our perception of reality. Moral laxity, sin, and lack of faith, cloud vision. That’s very true and our propensity to sleep through the resurrection, obviously, has something to do with our less than perfect faith and morals. However, I believe, in the end the problem is not so much our badness as our busyness, our sin as our obsessions. Let me try to explain this:

I don’t think that we are a particularly bad people. We have moral faults and laxities which are peculiar to our generation, but, conversely, we also have moral strengths and virtues that past generations lacked. Moreover, God is used to revealing love and

resurrection to a sinful people. Where God is perhaps less practiced is in revealing love and resurrection to such busy and preoccupied persons. Where we differ from past generations is more in the pace of our lives than in our moral inadequacies. We are pressured, preoccupied, hurried, hell-bent, and driven in a way that previous generations never were. We’ve no time for the examined life, for contemplation, to notice spring and resurrection. “The plant must run!” as Merton once put it. There is little time or energy left after that has been taken care of.

Sadly, this is true even of our preaching of the gospel. We are so busy teaching the gospel, learning the gospel, running religious programs, administering sacraments, and making sure the religious plant runs that there is precious, little, if any, time and energy left to actually live the gospel.

We have to spend so much time talking about God that, at a point, there is no time to listen to God any more. To this we add restlessness and emotional obsessions. Here too we differ from past ages. We are more restless, more dis-eased, than they. People have always been restless and prone to obsessions, but our age militates against restfulness and literally invites obsessions.

A myriad of factors—mass media, more leisure time, unbridled romance and sex, and philosophies of self-fulfillment which point us towards a salvation within our world—have driven up our psychic temperatures and have made it very difficult for us to accept our own lives and

spirits. This makes for lots of heartaches. As painful as are the headaches that come to us from the hurriedness and pressures of our work, they are a lesser evil. It’s our heartaches, the emotional obsessions that so unsettle our rest, which, in Orwell’s metaphor, keep us concentrated on the jam.

They are the pain and the narcissism which makes us unaware of spring and resurrection and the whispering of God about newness and stones being rolled back. We don’t notice spring and resurrection because, outside of our heartaches and headaches, we hardly see anything at all. The earth is ablaze with the fire of God, with sights, sounds, smells, touches and tastes that are enough to make anyone want to take one’s shoes off. There’s resurrection a plenty! Mostly it goes unnoticed. We sleep the sleep of heartaches and headaches!

It’s the time for spring and resurrection. I doubt there will be any resurrection trumpets loud enough to blast the narcissistic hell out of us. Mostly resurrection is about susurrection,* whispering. God whispers a lot. There are all kinds of secrets to be heard. Spring and Easter is a good season, for looking and listening.

__________* The definition of susurrection can be found here.

THE PERSPECTIVE OF JUSTICERising to New Life

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.” Easter is the great celebration of victory of life over death.

Ours is an Easter religion. We do not deny or turn away from the evils that surround us: the wars that

have killed some 100 million people in our (last) century; the poverty that grips more than half of the human race; the hunger that kills millions every year and ruins the lives of millions more; the discrimination that divides the human family into contending parties.

We do not deny these miseries, but we refuse to surrender to their power because of our faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Suffering will be vindicated; death will be overcome; a new life will arise: that is the Easter message of the paschal mystery.

“Let us feast with joy in the Lord.” Just as Christ passed through death to resurrection, so too will the world pass through its suffering to the glory of a new life.

There is no room for despair: our Easter faith tells us that God will “raise us up and renew our lives.”

This is the ‘day which the Lord has made.’ Alleluia! Take fresh hope, brothers and sisters of the whole world! With Christ our Passover everything is possible! Christ goes forward in our future!(Pope John Paul II, Easter Message,1991: 8)

JOINING THE PARISHNo matter what your journey has been, we want to be your companions for the next steps, to share the Gospel together and to help each other along the way. Most of us are from within parish boundaries in Melrose and Saugus, but we have parishioners from as far afield as Georgetown and Framingham! Please introduce yourself to a staff member, or drop in for coffee on Sunday. You can register as a parishioner online via our website, or stop by the rectory.

ADULT INITIATION, RCIAWe are always ready to begin the process by which an adult or older child becomes a Catholic, either by full initiation in baptism, or by reception into full communion. We are also happy to prepare you for adult Confirmation. Contact Fr. Ron.

BAPTISM FOR INFANTSNormally, the baptism of infants is celebrated within the Sunday assembly at a time convenient to the parents. Parents must be parishioners here or have a letter of permission from their pastor. Fr. Ron is the staff contact person for preparation.

GENERATIONS OF FAITHWe are a community of life-long learners. Our parish program of inter-generational learning and celebration of faith is called Generations of Faith. Materials are in the Church or available at our Faith Formation Office through Ann Lahiff.

We normally send ministers out with communion after the eight o’clock on Sunday, and also schedule regular home visits during the week. It is always possible to anoint the sick during regularly scheduled liturgies. All you have to do is ask!

ORDER of CHRISTIAN FUNERALSWe will work with you to plan your own funeral liturgy or that of a loved one, and are prepared to celebrate the Vigil, also known as the “Wake,” in the Church building for those who choose.

Meet Fr. Tom—Bringing Christ to All AgesWhen Fr. Tom Macdonald walks through the streets of Dorchester, people don’t see just a young friendly face. They see a priest.

It’s been three years since Fr. Tom was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Boston. Yet in that short time, he has become a trusted and respected friend, neighbor, and priest at the St. Ann/St. Brendan parish collaborative. “Many of the good people in these close-knit communities have seen so much more of life than I have,” says Fr. Tom, “but it’s their faith in the priesthood, their faith in the Church, and their faith in Christ that enables them to see Christ in me. It is a beautiful gift that I feel blessed to receive new again each day.”

To see Fr. Tom’s story, visit clergyfunds.org.

Our priests are there for us and our families without question or hesitation. Please show your gratitude and consider making a generous gift to your parish collection this Easter.

Thank you for helping to ensure a continuum of care and quality of life for all our active and senior priests.
