Today’s Readings—An “epiphany” is an appear-ance. In today's readings, with their rising stars, splendorous lights and mysteries revealed, the face of the child born on Christmas day appears. Herod, in today's Gospel, asks the chief priests and scribes where the Messiah is to be born. The answer Matthew puts on their lips says much more, combining two strands of Old Testament promise – one revealing the Messiah to be from the line of David (see 2 Samuel 2:5), the other predicting “a ruler of Israel” who will “shepherd his flock” and whose “greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth” (see Micah 5:1-3). Those promises of Israel's king ruling the na-tions resound also in today's Psalm. The psalm celebrates David's son, Solomon. His kingdom, we sing, will stretch “to the ends of the earth,” and the world's kings will pay Him homage. That's the scene too in today's First Reading, as nations stream from the East, bearing “gold and frankin-cense” for Israel's king. The Magi's pilgrimage in today's Gospel marks the fulfillment of God's promises. The Magi, proba-bly Persian astrologers, are following the star that Balaam predicted would rise along with the ruler's staff over the house of Jacob (see Numbers 24:17). Laden with gold and spices, their journey evokes those made to Solomon by the Queen of Sheba and the “kings of the earth” (see 1 Kings 10:2,25; 2 Chronicles 9:24). Interestingly, the only other places where frankincense and myrrh are mentioned together are in songs about Solomon (see Song of Songs 3:6, 4:6,14). One greater than Solomon is here (see Luke 11:31). He has come to reveal that all peoples are “co-heirs” of the royal family of Israel, as today's Epistle teaches. His manifestation forces us to choose: Will we follow the signs that lead to Him as the wise Magi did? Or will we be like those priests and the scribes who let God's words of promise become dead letters on an ancient page? Source: www.stpaulcenter.com

Family Prepara on for Sundays Sunday, January 6—The magi visit the Christ Child with great joy. King Herod wants to visit this Child who is a threat to His power, not to honor Him but to destroy Him. People still see Jesus as a threat to “happiness.” Give the Christ Child a great gift—your heart and obedience. That is real joy. Sunday, January 13—Jesus had no need of bap-tism as He was without sin. He chose to be bap-tized to take on our sins and purify the water, make it holy. Baptism is a precious gift. Have your chil-dren been baptized? Follow the example of Jesus and seek baptism for those you love most.

One Hour Fast Before Receiving Holy Communion

Catholics are asked to fast one hour before receiv-ing Jesus in Holy Communion. Water and medica-tions are permissible. Gum, mints, coffee, juice, food and so forth break the fast. The fast helps us to focus on the heavenly food we are about to re-ceive—the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus in the Eucharist.

Training is required before volunteering with children at the parish or school.

To volunteer with children in the parish or school, you must first attend a Virtus “Protecting God’s Children” session and pass a background check. Schedule and training locations can be found at www.virtusonline.org. Attended Virtus? Your ac-count must remain current with assigned articles. Contact Betty Ann Battson, Virtus Coordinator, 299-3728 or [email protected].

Reporting Suspected Abuse

The Archdiocese remains committed to investigat-ing any allegation of abuse of a minor made against any member of the clergy or any church employee or volunteer — no matter the age of the incident or the current age of the victim. Indi-viduals are encouraged to call the confidential report line at (913) 647-3051 (or visit archkck.org/reportabuse) to make a report to Jan Saylor, arch-diocesan report investigator, and to call law en-forcement directly. Thank you Parishioners! This Christmas season you have responded gen-erously to the needs of others. The Social Con-cerns Committee has been able to help 38 fami-lies with food and gifts through the annual Christ-mas tree appeal. Also, you contributed an over-whelming amount of canned goods for the food pantries operated by Catholic Charities. And, final-ly, Sonshine boxes were prepared by Social Con-cerns members and presented to our parish homebound residents by Homebound Ministers. Thank you, again, for assisting with these worth-while efforts to assist those who may have issues greater than ours.

Church Response to Crisis

Transparency and accountability are imperative in the Church’s response to the crisis of sexual abuse of minors. In response to current national discussions, our Archdiocese encourages you to visit our website that provides important infor-mation, addresses questions and offers an oppor-tunity for parishioners to share concerns and lend their voices by responding to an online survey. Please visit https://responseincrisis.archkck.org/ to learn how we actively safeguard the innocent and provide care for those affected by abuse.
