Today’s Readings—In the Church, we are made children of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Ja-cob—the God who makes known His name and His ways to Moses in today’s First Reading. Mindful of His covenant with Abraham (see Ex-odus 2:24), God came down to rescue His people from the slave drivers of Egypt. Faithful to that same covenant (see Luke 1:54–55, 72–73), He sent Jesus to redeem all lives from destruction, as today’s Psalm tells us. Paul says in today’s Epistle that God’s saving deeds in the Exodus were written down for the Church, intended as a prelude and foreshadowing of our own Baptism by water, our liberation from sin, our feeding with spiritual food and drink. Yet the events of the Exodus were also given as a “warning”—that being children of Abraham is no guarantee that we will reach the promised land of our salvation. At any moment, Jesus warns in today’s Gospel, we could perish—not as God’s punishment for be-ing “greater sinners”—but because, like the Israel-ites in the wilderness, we stumble into evil desires, fall into grumbling, forget all His benefits. Jesus calls us today to “repentance”—not a one-time change of heart, but an ongoing, daily transfor-mation of our lives. We’re called to live the life we sing about in today’s Psalm—blessing His holy name, giving thanks for His kindness and mercy. The fig tree in His parable is a familiar Old Tes-tament symbol for Israel (see Jeremiah 8:3; 24:1–10). As the fig tree is given one last season to pro-duce fruit before it is cut down, so too Jesus is giv-ing Israel one final opportunity to bear good fruits as evidence of its repentance (see Luke 3:8). Lent should be for us like the season of re-prieve given to the fig tree, a grace period in which we let “the gardener,” Christ, cultivate our hearts, uprooting what chokes the divine life in us, strengthening us to bear fruits that will last into eternity. Source: www.stpaulcenter.com

Family Preparation for Sundays Sunday, March 24—Jesus warns that we must repent and turn away from sin to be saved. He tells of a fig tree that did not bear fruit. Rather than cut it down immediately, the gardener did not give up on it. We must not give up on ourselves or on others. There is always hope and mercy in Christ. Sunday, March 31—Jesus gives sight to the blind yet, despite the evidence, those present refuse to believe this. They question and question, not be-lieving that Jesus could work such miracles. Our world still refuses to believe in Christ, despite evi-dence to the truth. The spiritually blind seek an excuse to remain in sin. Are you blind to your sin?

Lenten Food Drive Update: Help Us Meet Our Goal of 3,000 Pounds of Food!

Social Concerns members will pass out grocery bags next weekend (March 30-31) after Masses for parishioners to fill with food donations for the Lenten food drive. The Catholic Charities truck will be in the west parking lot on April 6 & 7. Volun-teers will be by the truck during each Mass that weekend to collect food donations. Please do not bring food donations to Church or the parking lot prior to Mass times on April 6-7. As a friendly re-minder, please check all expiration dates on food! This huge project needs many volunteers to make it a success. If you can help during Masses April 6 & 7 sorting donations and loading the truck, e-mail Paula Frost at [email protected]. “Unplanned” In Theaters March 29 https://www.unplannedfilm.com/

“Unplanned” is the inspiring true story of Abby Johnson, one of the youngest Planned Parent-hood clinic directors in the nation. She was in-volved in over 22,000 abortions. One day she saw something that changed everything, leading Abby to join her former enemies at 40 Days For Life, and become one of the top pro-life speakers in America! Ladies, Want to See “Unplanned”? Join members of our women’s prayer and pilgrim-age group on Sunday, March 31. Meet in the school parking lot by the library at 12:30 pm to carpool to the theatre (off Midland Drive) to see the movie, then have discussion and dinner at a restaurant. Contact Theresa Smith, 913-299-3370 or [email protected] if you would like to go!

Prayer to End Infanticide The U.S. Senate recently failed to pass the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, legislation that prohibits infanticide by ensuring that a child born alive following an attempted abortion would receive the same degree of care to preserve her or his life and health as would be given to any oth-er child born alive at the same gestational age. Please join us in prayer for an end to infanticide: “Jesus, Lord of Life, transform the hearts of our elected leaders to recognize that infanticide is wrong and must not be tolerated. We especially pray for our Senator(s) Moran and Roberts. Open his/her/their heart(s) and mind(s) to recognize and defend the precious gift of every human life.”

Luke 18 Retreat for 8th Graders Registration Due This Week!

Luke 18 is a weekend-long Catholic retreat de-signed just for 8th graders. It’s upbeat and interac-tive, using music, games, talks, and small groups led by high schoolers that invite them into a deep-er relationship with Christ and each other. Reach-KCK Youth Ministry is sponsoring this annual KCK-wide Luke 18 on April 12-14 at Prairie Star Ranch (transportation provided!). Cost is $75 (includes all meals, t-shirt, and lodging). Registration paper-work is due March 31 along with payment. Space is very limited, however, so those that return their registration form with payment will more likely se-cure a spot on the retreat. Forms and payments may be mailed to or dropped off at ReachKCK 2215 Parallel Ave. Suite 2, KCKS 66104. Forms and payment may also be returned in an envelope labeled “Luke 18” with your 8th grader’s name and the date to your child’s Confirmation teacher. Pay-ments can be made in cash, check, or money or-der, made out to “ReachKCK.” You may also reg-ister online at tiny.cc/luke18kck.

Reporting Suspected Abuse

The Archdiocese remains committed to investigat-ing any allegation of abuse of a minor made against any member of the clergy or any church employee or volunteer — no matter the age of the incident or the current age of the victim. Indi-viduals are encouraged to call the confidential report line at (913) 647-3051 (or visit archkck.org/reportabuse) to make a report to Jan Saylor, arch-diocesan report investigator, and to call law en-forcement directly. If a child or vulnerable adult is in immediate danger, call 911.

Training is required before volunteering with children

at the parish or school. To volunteer with children in the parish or school, you must first attend a Virtus “Protecting God’s Children” session and pass a background check. Schedule and training locations can be found at www.virtusonline.org. Attended Virtus? Your ac-count must remain current with assigned articles. Contact Betty Ann Battson, Virtus Coordinator, 299-3728 or [email protected].
