Oral Surgery
Steps of Extraction
• Patient Evaluation– Case history– Extent of the problem– Concurrent infections

individual teeth– Discuss the functions of each constituent of L A c a r t r i d g e– Calculate the s a fe d o s e o f L A– Explain the reasons/mechanisms for L A fa i l u re– Identify signs of L A t ox i c i t y /o v e rd o s e , and manage LA

and provide jaw support– L u xate tooth (expand bone) using elevators and
forceps– d e l i ve r the tooth– provide p o st ex t ra c ti o n ca re and instructions

• Manage i nt ra - o p e rati ve a n d p o st- o p e rati ve co mp l i cati o n s of tooth extraction
• (initially) manage me d i ca l e me rge n c i e s during clinical practice: loss of consciousness, chest pain, respiratory distress
• use appropriate patient and operator p o s i ti o n s during history, LA and extraction
• follow c ro s s i n fe c ti o n co nt ro l guidelines during tooth extraction
• co mmu n i cate appropriately with the patient throughout the procedure
