Estate George James Howden

George Howden, a Life Member and long-time supporter, died in 2007 and in his Will he left the Club a generous bequest of $20,000. He also instructed Trustees Executors Ltd to set up a Deed of Arrangement to utilise the “residual” funds from his Estate, and invest them to provide a long-term income stream for our Club. The Estate was registered as a charitable entity by the Charities Commission on 30 June 2008.

The Club at all times needs to be aware that the initial bequest and all subsequent income generated under the Deed may only be utilised by the Club for the following purposes: (a) The provision of coaching services at all grades; (b) the maintenance, upkeep and improvement of the grounds upon which the Club’s activities are centred or take place; (c) the provision of or improvement to the facilities and amenities of the Club, and (d) the general betterment of the Club as a whole, and the promotion of its interests.

To ensure the income is so paid or applied in accordance with the terms of the Trust, it is a requirement that at all times there is an Advisory Committee of three persons who must give prior approval. Upon the death, retirement, resignation or removal from the office of any Advisory Committee member, the remaining two members will appoint another suitable person to fill the vacancy. The Advisory Committee shall make such rules and regulations to govern its functioning as it may determine and any such rules or regulations may from time to time be revoked, amended, replaced or modified with the unanimous approval of all Advisory Committee members.

The first persons to hold office are Graham Thorne Dowling, Brian Charles Adams and Grant James Dickson. They, in conjunction with Trustees Executors, have, since 27 November 2009, embarked on a “conservative growth portfolio” strategy that both parties believe is in the best long term interests of the Club. At each balance date, annual accounts are prepared by Trustees Executors, and, once approved by the Advisory Committee, the net income, after setting aside an agreed percentage to add to the Trust Capital, shall be paid to the Club by Trustees Executors Ltd.

1. Premier Coach. Jerard Cross – asked about the change of Premier Team Coach. Ashley Taggart responded that Brendon Donkers was leaving to take up a coaching opportunity with the Wizards. Alex Reese had accepted the position on the condition he would no longer play. The club is mindful of Alex’s inexperience at this level and will facilitate mentoring as required. Alex has a previous commitment this season and is unavailable for one month; in this time Brendon will continue with the team.

2. Opening Day. This was expected to happen on 5 October.

3. Life Members. Life Member Ray Burgess, who currently lives overseas, will be in Christchurch on Saturday 12 October. There will be a gathering of all available Life Members at 6.30pm in the clubrooms.

4. Pavilion. Tony Feely asked if there are any renovations planned. Paul O’Flaherty responded that there are funds, including monies from the George Howden Trust, available for renovations but we are awaiting more information about potential strengthening of the downstairs area, including costs. This is taking longer than first thought and we are proceeding with caution.

Notes to the Financial Statements

1 STATEMENT OF ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club (Inc) is an Incorporated Society registered under the Incorporated Societies Act 1908.

These Financial Statements are general purpose financial statements and have been prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting practices.

The accounting principles recognised as appropriate for the measurement and reporting of earnings and financial position on an historical cost basis have been used, with the exception of certain items for which specific accounting policies have been identified.

a. Changes in Accounting Policies

There have been no changes in accounting policies. All policies have been applied on bases consistent with those used in previous years.

b. Differential Reporting

Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club (Inc) is a qualifying entity for Differential Reporting purposes as it is not publically accountable and is not large, as defined in the Framework for Differential Reporting. Differential Reporting Exemptions have been applied.


c. Fixed Assets and Depreciation

All fixed assets are recorded at cost less accumulated depreciation. All assets are depreciated on a straight line basis, which spreads the depreciation evenly over the estimated remaining life of each asset The following are estimated economic working lives on which depreciation of the assets is based.

Buildings – 40 years; Plant & Equipment – 2 to 15 years.

d. Goods and Services Tax

These financial statements have been prepared on a GST exclusive basis.

e. Income Tax

As an amateur Sports Club, the Club has gained an exemption from Income Tax.

f. Investments

Investments are carried at the lower of cost or net realisable value. The Lane Neave Trust Account holds a bequest from George Howden, a Life Member and long-time supporter, plus some accrued interest. George Howden also instructed Trustees Executors Ltd to set up a Deed of Arrangement to utilise the “residual” funds from his Estate, and invest them to provide a long-term income stream for the Club. The Estate was registered as a chartable entity by the Charities Commission on 30 June

2008

g. Receivables

Receivables are stated at their estimated realisable value. Bad debts are written off in the year in which they are identified.

2 CONTINGENT LIABILITIES There were no contingent liabilities at balance date (2013: $0). Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club Inc. has not granted any securities in respect of liabilities by any party whatsoever.

3 SECURITIES AND GUARANTEES There was no overdraft facility as at balance date nor was any facility arranged.


AUDITOR’S REPORT

I have audited the attached financial report The financial report provides information about the past financial performance of the Club and its financial position as at 30 April 2014. The information is stated in accordance with the accounting policies.

Committee Responsibilities

The Committee is responsible for the preparation of the financial report, which fairly reflects the financial position of the Club as at 30 April 2014 and of the result of its operations for the year ended on that date.

Auditor’s Responsibilities

It is my responsibility to express an independent opinion on the financial report presented by the Committee and report my opinion to you.

Basis of Opinion

An audit includes examining, on a test basis, evidence relative to the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. It also includes assessing

• the significant estimates and judgements made by the Committee in the presentation and

• preparation of the financial report.

• whether the accounting policies are appropriate to the Club’s circumstances, consistently applied and adequately disclosed.

I conducted the audit in accordance with the New Zealand Auditing Standards. I planned and performed my audit so as to obtain all the information and explanations which I considered necessary in order to provide me with sufficient evidence to give reasonable assurance that the financial statements are free from any misstatements, whether caused by fraud or error. In forming my opinion I also evaluated the overall adequacy of the presentation of information in the financial statements.

Other than in my capacity as auditor I have no relationship with, or any interest in, the Club.

Qualified Opinion

In common with other organisations of a similar nature, control over revenues from the various activities prior to its being recorded is limited and there are no practical audit procedures to determine the effects of the limited control.


In this respect alone, I have not obtained all the information and explanations I have required.

In my opinion, except for adjustments that might have been necessary had I been able to obtain sufficient evidence concerning various sources of income, the financial report reflects the operations of the Club for the year ended 30 April 2014.

In my opinion, the attached financial report reflects the financial position of the Club as at 30 April 2014.

My audit was completed on 18 July 2014 and my qualified opinion is expressed as at that date.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT This is a club in good heart. Every weekend our playing fields are full of people, young and older, from the cricket tragic to the

“friend of a friend” ring-in, having fun playing, watching and talking cricket. And that, after all, is our role – to help people take part in the sport they love.

That we do this is thanks to a number of fine cricket people. Matt Farrant, Brendon Donkers, Alex Reese, Brett Thomson, Dan Vedder, Rob Hoysted, Callum George, Regan Wilson, Chris Peters and David Robertson have all organised, coached or captained one of our seven senior teams. Also, as Peter Burke notes in his Junior report, we are blessed with a number of enthusiastic and skilled parents and other volunteers who are introducing our young players to this great game.

We are also fortunate to have a dedicated, hard-working committee who are taking the club forward. John Thompson, this season with Tom O’Carroll’s input, produces some of the best pitches around. Also, John and Tom were willing to do the hard yards associated with us hosting ICC, New Zealand Cricket and Christchurch Metro Cricket tournaments and practices. This meant that we received additional revenue that has helped our sound current financial position, as outlined in the Treasurer’s report. Another reason for this is that Peter Burke is an expert at raising funds and sponsorship. Peter also oversees tour cricket clothing and equipment stocks, and is of course admired and respected for his stewardship of the Junior Cricket Programme.

The hard work of our Secretary, Lee McKenzie, alongside her Merivale-Papanui colleagues at North West Youth Cricket, ensures a strong high school cricket structure and a steady supply of well-versed Year 13s into both clubs.

Doug Allcock, along with his team at Marriotts, has streamlined and improved our financial management systems, and provides excellent information on which to base our decisions. Brett Thomson – when he is not scoring runs and taking wickets – makes sure that each week there are enough other players to do the same, and has an excellent cricket brain when it comes to discussing how to keep on improving our senior results.

Lastly, we thank Ashley Taggart who has been a senior player and committee member at the club for many years. Ashley, in his capacity as Club Captain, has played a large part in the strengthening of our senior cricket over the past few seasons, and has consistently provided considered and experienced advice on many other issues. Ashley is stepping down from this role but the good news is that he is not lost to cricket. We wish him well in his new role as Chair of Christchurch Metropolitan Cricket.


We are grateful to the husbands, wives, partners and families of all of the above people, and of our players. Cricket, and all that goes with it, is a game, or an obsession, that takes time and effort. Thanks for your support and forbearance.

There is also a changing of the guard in our Premier team. Our coach of three seasons, Brendon Donkers, has had his talents recognised with his appointment to the role of Assistant Coach of the Canterbury side. Brendon’s contribution here has been immense. He inherited a Premier team down on confidence and direction but lifted performances within only one season. While title successes were frustratingly elusive, when they do come they will be built on the foundations that Brendon established. Matt Farrant, while staying on as a player, has decided to step down as Premier Captain. Our thanks to Matt for his hard work and leadership during the last three years. We therefore head into 2014/15 with a new Premier leadership team of Sam Noster (Captain), Angus Harman (Vice-Captain) and Alex Reese (Coach), and we wish them well.

Tony Feely, Life Member, and Premier Team Scorer for an unbelievable 34 seasons, is also stepping down, largely due to other commitments with the New Zealand Umpires and Scorers Association and Canterbury Cricket. Tony will however assume a “Scorer Emeritus” role, will continue to keep the club historical records current, and will no doubt be an invaluable source of support for our new Premier Scorer, Arun Kumar. Thanks Tony.

Premier team results this season were slightly deceptive. The team did not finish in the first half of the table for any of the three competitions. However, as Matt Farrant’s report indicates, it was the equal of any team when it played to its ability. More consistency is the key, particularly with the batting (although this did improve somewhat from last season). There is a sense that, with some judicious recruiting, and more hard work and application, a trophy is not too far around the corner.

For the first season for a while, we also did not pick up a trophy in the other senior grades. However, many teams came close. The 2As were a boundary away from the T20 final, and the Presidents Foxes were in the hunt all season. The 3B Cannons could have easily been grade finalists, and the Mariners and Brawlers were snapping at their heels. The Petersen Shield results elsewhere in this report show that the first five clubs were very closely matched, an indication of our overall consistency as a club.

There is one important trophy in our cabinet however. The Junior Premiers were yet again victorious, winning the 2013 title. This team is easily our most successful in the last few years and is a credit to all concerned. Our best wishes go to those players who have headed off to high school and we look forward to seeing you back at the club in a few years’ time.


There are of course the inevitable challenges. The internal issues that your committee continues to work on haven’t changed much from those outlined in last season’s Chairman’s report. However, it was disconcerting this season to see, for the first time, a handful of defaults in the 2A grade. Our 2As, while not the only team affected, lost a month’s cricket through two defaults in the two day competition. This is embarrassing both for Christchurch Metro Cricket and our club, and is not easy to explain to subs-paying players. Most importantly, defaults must be prevented from becoming a trend in what is the feeder competition for our Premier grade. One of the solutions is to ensure that the third morning grade (2Bs), itself a feeder grade to the 2As, remains just that and does not morph into another “closed team” grade. Our committee is mindful of the responsibility it has to the morning grades and to improving its support for our 2B players, and is planning to do just that.

However, this is just faint background noise. It is drowned out by the sound of bat on ball, the talk about cricket, the laughter in the clubrooms, the fun.

The club committee is very grateful for the support it receives from Marriotts Chartered Accountants who provide financial services to the club throughout the season.

TREASURER’S REPORT The 2013-2014 season has resulted in a net surplus of $24,940. This surplus is largely due to a number of

one-off revenue gains from hosting tournaments at the grounds, insurance proceeds and funds raised from the golf tournament in April.

The most notable change this year, has been the utilisation of Xero software for invoicing subscriptions.

lnvoicing players’ subscriptions through Xero and then monitoring the collection of those subscriptions from an aged debtors report – combined with a policy of not accepting subscription payments over the bar – has meant that the financial accounts are the most accurate reflection of both the performance of the bar, and of subscription receipts in many many years.

We again would like to emphasize that, the club like many sporting organisations, remains heavily dependent upon Pub Charity. lt funds most of our coaching and groundsmen overheads, in addition to the investment from time to time in capital assets. We again are heavily indebted to Peter Burke for the wonderful work he does in this area.

lt is hoped that for the forthcoming season we can look to upgrade some areas of the clubrooms to help create a more family-friendly social environment for our members, while continuing to maintain an ongoing policy of fiscal prudence.

GROUNDS & MACHINERY REPORTOur season started with the same problem as the previous year: absence of

the heavy roller which was undergoing major repairs. Fortunately, with the help of a few friends and favours, this problem was eventually overcome. In the meantime it placed increased pressure on ground staff, both in time and efficiencies, but perseverance finally won through.

We had the services of Tom O’Carroll for the season and his work ethic and attention to detail enabled the season to progress without any further disruptions.

Our club and facilities were used extensively by both Canterbury Cricket and New Zealand Cricket which reflected favourably in our balance sheet, bringing increased revenue for ground hire and expertise inside our club.

All four blocks and practice facilities are up to provincial standards – testament to efforts made in planning and pre-season ground maintenance. All Premier clubs enjoy using Burnside Oval for T20 and 50 over tournaments.

All blocks have had top-dressing and fertiliser applications and seeding renovations done this autumn and the strike has been very good. Thanks to Tom O’Carroll and Christchurch Metropolitan Cricket.

Improvements have taken place throughout the year with the addition of a gear shed, a ride-on mower, a super sopper, and a trolley for the transportation of covers, plus the purchase of another cover and scrim.

Our machinery continues to challenge our knowledge and patience but Kiwi ingenuity and native cunning manage to keep them running – long may it continue!

More miles than it looks: Grounds Convenor John Thompson on the wonderfully renovated heavy roller


Tom Latham did not play for our Premier team in 2013/14, his first absence for a whole season since he debuted for the team, while still at high school, in

2007/8. There is a very positive reason for this – Tom is becoming an established member of the New Zealand side.

After making his international One-Day and T20 debuts in 2012, Tom was selected for his first Test, against India, in February 2014 in Wellington. This match will be forever famous due to Brendon McCullum becoming the first Kiwi to score a test triple century.

Tom is therefore the club’s first Test international since Terry Jarvis in 1973.

After the India test, Tom was selected for the New Zealand tour of the West Indies and was part of the notable 2-1 series win. Picked for one of the problematic opening spots, he showed excellent signs of being a long-term solution, with scores of 83, 73, 82 and 36 in the first two tests. Tom’s first test contribution was pivotal in the team winning this important initial match.

All this on top of a highly successful domestic first class season in which Tom scored 977 runs at an average of 69.78, and was one of the keys to Canterbury winning the Plunket Shield. His two big double hundreds (241* v Wellington and 261 v Central Districts) demonstrate his ability to concentrate for long periods.

The club is very proud of Tom and his achievements, and wishes him well for the future, which at the time of writing includes a New Zealand A tour to England and probable selection for the New Zealand tour to the United Arab Emirates to play Pakistan, ahead of an exciting New Zealand season that includes co-hosting a World Cup.

LIFE MEMBERSIn its 109 year history, the club has had only 26 Life Members. To join this exclusive group, one has to have made a very significant contribution, over a long period, to our organisation.

In October, Ray Burgess, a previous Club President and one of our Life Members, was back here on holiday from his home in Queensland.

So, we took the opportunity to invite our nine current Life Members for a drink together in the clubrooms. It was a great chance for them to catch up, and also to meet other club members, including our Premier team.

We also grabbed the chance to take a photo of the group.

PREMIER GRADEThe 2013/14 season started off with a bang when we beat Marist-Harewood away at Redwood Park by 134 runs. This was followed

up by a six run victory against Riccarton in a rain-affected match. Such a promising start was put to waste with a string of losses against Canterbury Country, Lancaster Park Woolston, St Albans and the Under 20s. Those results were put right with a couple of good wins against OBC and Sydenham before a tight-fought loss against East Shirley to finish the round robin.

Performances of note with the bat across the one-day competition were Will Young’s 69 against Marist, George Worker’s 58 against Country, Sam Noster’s 55 against OBC and 63 against East Shirley, as well as Mike Allcock’s 59 not out against Marist. David Sewell also had the fantastic figures of 4-19 with the ball against Sydenham.

Show Weekend brought on T20, a format that has never seen us play our best cricket, and although this year we showed glimpses, we lost the crunch moments. Highlight of the weekend would have to be Sam Noster’s belligerent 87 against OBC.

The two-day competition is where we have been most comfortable over the past couple of seasons and is definitely where we have played to our potential. Our pre-Christmas match was a repeat of last year’s final against Lancaster Park Woolston. The re-match brought out the best in us and we set a big total first up, thanks to a solid platform laid on by Angus Harman’s 69 and George Worker’s 59. Then Scott Inglis destroyed their top order on the way to figures of 5/31. With a first innings lead of 99 we would have loved to have pushed on for an outright result but the weather intervened, meaning we had to settle for first innings points.

The New Year brought about the performance of the season against OBC as Sam Noster scored a superb hundred, finishing on 138. He was ably supported by Scott Paulin’s 60, setting us up for a big first innings total, which allowed us to dominate the game from the outset. The game was eventually won outright by six wickets, thanks to a huge effort from our left arm spinners bowling in tandem on the second day. Jordie Gibbons took 4/36 and Hamish Robertson 5/35.

Marist halted our momentum in the next game, although form with the bat wasn’t an issue thanks to Carl Huyser’s 80, Angus Harman’s 50 and Sam Noster’s 63 not out. Our next performance was one to remember, with Micah Campbell announcing himself at Premier level with a mature knock of 43 not out that guided us to victory against East Shirley. Micah, along with Scott Inglis, steered us from 113-8 all the way through to our target of 164. Micah followed up that knock with an equally important innings of 85 against eventual competition winners St Albans to add some respectability to our first innings score. We went on to lose that game as well as the next one against Riccarton to take us out of the title hunt. Despite that, Jordie

Gibbons took away great figures against Riccarton of 4/41. The last round saw us play Sydenham for pride and we finished the season in style with a 34-run outright victory, lead by Sam Noster’s one-legged effort of 69.

Special mention has to go to Sam Noster for his efforts with the bat, particularly in the two-day competition where he scored 453 runs and earned his place on the honours board. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank Brendon Donkers for his massive contribution to the club over his time with us. His considerable talents have been recognized by Canterbury Cricket, with Brendon now the assistant coach of the Canterbury Wizards. We are lucky enough to have Alex Reese step in, and are excited as he and Sam Noster, the new Premier Captain, lead this side into the future.

SECOND GRADE 2AThe team started the season with high hopes after making some good progress from the previous season. A good pre-season and the

arrival of some new and old returning players had us in a really positive place heading into 2013/14.

The one-day competition, which was probably our best format, got off to a great start but we fell away in the back half. We were able to make the semi-finals, but we came unstuck against OBC.

We moved into the T20. On the back of some great performances by Hugo Snape and Jordan Buchanan we again reached the semi-finals and played our best game, but went down to OBC by three runs.

This brings us to the two-day competition where we improved remarkably. To finish third in this format was really pleasing, with a few of the guys dominating. Micah Campbell and Matt Jefferd were particularly strong, with some awesome individual results. Micah took 13 wickets in a match against Marist and Matt Jefferd scored 164 against LPW. Steve McKean came back and his experience was invaluable.

There were also some other impressive individual performances. Steve scored a good hundred in his return match, Jordan Buchanan made a good half century against Marist and Paul Shackleton clubbed a six for a win over OBC.

I would like to thank Brendon Donkers and Alex Reese for all the work with the guys – much appreciated. You can really see their values and disciplines starting to come through. I would like to wish Brendon all the best for his role with Canterbury Cricket. Hopefully we can recruit well for the coming season and it looks like there will be some great competition for spots. So, all things going to plan, we can improve on this season and win another competition. We are in a good place for the 14/15 season.

THIRD GRADE 2BThe 2013/14 season was a rebuilding one for the 2B side, with the traditional revolving door selection policy seeming to accelerate

until the Christmas break. With a very different side every week we struggled for consistent performances and unfortunately fell short of making the semi-finals to defend last year’s one day trophy. With the New Year came a more consistent side and better performances in the two-day format.

With the luxury of regularly having seven or eight bowling options we frequently bundled teams out cheaply, However we often weren’t able to capitalise as we struggled to get more than two or three batsmen to fire in the same innings. Ben Sturman and Sami Swadi (when available) were the consistent performers with the bat. Highlights of the season included Paul Shackleton turning it square to take six wickets, and Brett “the Administrator” Thomson and Steve McKean knocking very quick tons during guest appearances. Mal Burrows must be mentioned for his tireless bowling, consistently taking wickets at a good economy rate. I also have to acknowledge BWC’s unofficial ambassador and talent scout Shane Young who recruited Mal in a pub and had him down at cricket the next week.

Team awards were given to Ben Sturman for batting, Mal for bowling and Andrew Dean for his fielding work behind the stumps.

THE BRAWLERS The Brawlers season kicked off with a slightly different format with me stepping in as captain after being a member of the team for the previous three seasons, to give Rob Hoysted a

change after a solid four years of captaining and managing the team alone.

With strength of numbers in the very first game (an unusual Brawlers phenomenon) the team showed good promise with a comfortable eight-wicket win against the Sydenham Goats. Mike Vorster and Raj Arora put on stand-out performances which they would continue to back up in the remainder of the season. One disappointment in the outcome was an injury to our keeper Paviter Noori which, mixed with outside commitments, would exclude him from the rest of the season. However, Luke Morgan would step into the role and follow up with one of the most consistent season performances that would later earn him the best fielder trophy.

After a very close loss to the Cannons in the next game, the following three matches would produce consistent wins including a victory against eventual division winners Sumner. An improvement in fielding from previous seasons seemed to be proving our true potential in the division and confidence in the team was beginning to grow. However, through an injury to myself and later Rob, as well as a general drop in player availability, we would only manage to win one of the remaining five games in the season.

The New Year started with a bang, when we bowled Marist Harewood Green out for a measly 31 runs (me producing a lifetime best bowling effort of 6 /4) and claiming a nine-wicket win. Despite the persistent problem of lack of numbers we would follow that up with a solid streak, winning four of the next six games – including a thumping of the Cannons by 136 runs (thanks mainly to an impressive 168 opening partnership by Mike Aitken and Landon Neal).

Eventually we were to meet again with Sumner and unfortunately weren’t able to produce the same magic we did in our previous meeting and were beaten comfortably by six wickets. The remaining four games of the season would produce some more success however, going down to LPW in one game but consistently beating the Sydenham All Stars (who we played in all three other games) after losing to them twice earlier in the season.

Regardless of the change of format and our constant struggle with numbers it proved a successful season. The biggest performance improvement came in the field with a major decrease in dropped catches and misfields, and excellent consistency in the bowling attack. Individual batting performances were probably slightly down on previous seasons. However the team was often able to produce big enough totals through a good distribution of runs across all players.


Looking forward to next season, the focus will be on building up the core team members so that we can rely on getting numbers to games and continue building on the skill, confidence, and camaraderie in the team. It’s been a pleasure leading the boys through the season and I’m looking forward to picking up where we left off later in the year for hopefully an even better season to come.

THE CANNONSWe finished a solid third on the table, only missing out on a third consecutive grand final spot by a single point.

This season we initiated a new award system, the “AJ Moseley Memorable Moment of the Match”. Named after Cannons founder, life member and team Shaman, Andrew Moseley, it is awarded to an individual for a standout moment on the day. Over the season it was handed out for stunning catches, run outs, and sixes, but also for some cracking beamers, forgetting socks, and getting hit in the nuts during throw downs. THE MARINERS Karl Grant – Last year’s Al Brown trophy winner had another successful season despite being injured for the first half. Karl was very good again with both

bat and ball and saved his best performance of the season for the last match by scoring 77 and bowling five maidens on the trot!

Mike Banks – This season’s most improved player. Mike was always solid at the top of the order. The “go to” player in the field whenever the boys were quiet and a sledge was required. His 17* out of the teams total dismal total of 65 early in the season was a mighty effort and Banksie’s best of the season.

Reuben Le Roux – Reuben is the Mariner’s youngest team member but he always plays with great maturity. Reuben was always a very consistent new ball bowler, and he finished the season strongly with a 3-for in each of the last two matches.

Sam Jones – Lured to the mighty Mariners this season, Sam was a sound fieldsman and a top order batsman with potential. He had a very consistent second half of the season and scored some vital runs. Another contender for most improved player.

Ren Watene – Ren had limited batting opportunities this season, but his mixture of leg-spin and mystery ball bowling was hugely impressive. Ren’s 5/15 against Sumner was a standout performance. Also a brilliant outfielder with a rocket arm!

Jonno McCarrison – Work commitments limited Jonno to just a handful of games this season. He contributed hugely off the field however, by negotiating sponsorship with Walker Marine and keeping the boys hydrated after matches!

Bala Cole – For the third straight year Bala was one of the team’s best and most consistent bowlers. Equally impressive with both the new and old ball, he took 30 wickets including a 5-for. Bala was also a reliable fielder and handy lower order batsman.

Regan Wilson – This year’s Al Brown trophy winner, and the Mariners’ player of the season. Regan had a top season with the ball and was the team’s leading wicket taker. His highlight was a career best 7 for 5 off five overs against Merivale-Papanui.

James McIntyre – James was the Mariners’ most attacking bowler, never afraid to drop in a short ball or two! James took some vital wickets this season with the best being his stunning one-handed caught and bowled against LPW.

Tony Edlin – An impressive all round season for Tony. Opening the batting, he topped the run scoring charts for the Mariners. He was also a very good all-round fielder and a wicket-taking bowler. Despite scoring a couple of 50s, Tony’s hat-trick against Heathcote would have to be his season highlight!


Sean Armstrong – The fielder of the season again this year, saving many runs and taking some very good catches. Sean floated anywhere in the top seven when batting and played some good knocks throughout the season, none better than his 40 in our first T20 match.

Srikanth Toomula – Another new Mariner this year, Srikanth was an opening batsman with a sound technique who scored vital runs throughout the season. Also a very handy wicketkeeper, taking some stunning catches.

Mike Chun – Easily the team’s best “fill in” player, Mike finished high up on the total runs scored (despite playing only eight games) and finished top of the season batting averages.

Anukishan Kaki – Anu was another solid “fill in” player who contributed when called upon. His season highlight would be taking five catches behind the stumps against East Shirley.

The BWU President’s Foxes would probably gain a pass mark, if such things were given, for the 2013/14 season.

Following the all-conquering, Championship-winning efforts of the previous season, both expectation and pressure swarmed us like angry wasps.

The season started poorly, with those allergic to October pitches leaving us thin on core players and beaten in the first round. We rebounded spectacularly, dismissing Sydenham Hospital for 27 and being seated in the bar watching NPC rugby by 2.35pm.

From there we steadily climbed the points table with sound performances. A loss to eventual winners St Albans in the weeks before Christmas, however, would be a defining moment. The skipper and a fill-in called Fantastic (real name) scored at 13’s to bring us within sight of victory – only to fall 13 runs short when both were dismissed playing unnecessary shots.

That ten-point swing constituted the final gap between first and our joint third placing, but was a fair reflection of the strength of the respective sides.

Season highlights were aplenty. Beating Merivale-Papanui twice, including in a T20 round, but especially in a rampant nine wicket win that they described as their worst performance in the grade. Chris Kennedy’s dramatic efforts with bat and ball. The skipper spending five weeks padded up and not batting. Young’s catch filling in for the 2Bs. Crofty’s hundred against Easts Gold. Cold beer and lively conversation.

The low points were less obvious and need not be revisited.

Winning grades is not what this team is about. After the despair of dwindling numbers some three to four seasons ago the Foxes are now on a high – squad depth, competitiveness, Facebook posts and match reports have replaced frantic Friday recruiting. The Foxes are here to stay.

Performance-wise, Conrad Dry led in runs and Hamish Kember took a slim win in the wickets column. But every player enjoyed a moment or two in the sun, and a beer or six afterwards. We introduced new talent and beat old foe. The Famous Five post-season expedition to Kaikoura a fitting end to a great six months.

Metro Cricket held a grade debrief for Presidents in recent weeks, and steps have been taken to ensure the longevity of this now highly competitive cricket grade. It’s not old men bowling slow full tosses off two yards, it’s a great standard of cricket and a bag full of fun.

JUNIOR CRICKETThis season Friday night cricket was lucky to secure the services of our Premier Team Coach Alex Reese and

Senior Premier team Vice-Captain Angus Harman. It was also fantastic to see two of our past Have a Go and Junior Premier players Matthew Hay and Lennon Annett-Chee giving their time to coach at the club; they are now senior players at Christchurch Boy’s High School.

Have a Go cricket was coached by Matthew Hay and Angus Harman, ensuring all players fully participated in various drills and skills. Their patience and skills in organising the players made sure that the programme ran smoothly.

This season, Kiwi cricket was combined with Junior 20/20. This group played various games and skills, preparing them well for Super 8s and Hardball. Alex Reese led the coaching, ably assisted by Lennon Annett- Chee, and they ensured all players participated and enjoyed themselves.

On Saturdays we fielded teams in Senior Premier Year 8/7, Junior Premier Year 7/6, Junior Year 6 and Junior Year 5, as well as Junior Super 8s.

Our Senior Premier team was coached pre-Christmas by Peter Hay, assisted by Mike Dunlop. They performed outstandingly well, winning the Christchurch Junior Cricket Premier Trophy, with several of the boys going on to play at the South Island Primary Schools Tournament in Gore. Post-Christmas Richard Hartshorn and Angus McIntosh took over the team once all our Year Nines had moved to High School. It was a young team, including Year Sevens, and they were somewhat tentative at the start. However, by the end of the season they were starting to make inroads, stringing together several wins.

Pre-Christmas, the Year 7 Premier team was coached by Richard Hartshorn, whose wealth of knowledge, coaching ability and enthusiasm certainly put the team in good stead for the next step up – playing Senior Premier Cricket after Christmas.

Our Year 6 team was coached by Roger White and Angus McIntosh, who took this team from strength to strength as the season progressed, finishing second in their competition. The future of Junior Cricket looks well served from this group of players.

The Year 5 team was coached by Matthew Forster, assisted by son Sean and managed by Marie. This was a very young team who started to show their true potential towards the end of the season, with several players putting together some polished performances with both bat and ball.


The Junior Super 8s Team 7 was coached by Greg Price and managed by Cheryl Price. They did extremely well, winning the Junior Super 8s Section 2 competition, with an eight out of eight record. Team 6, also, in the Junior Super 8s, was coached by Murray Hawes, assisted by Matthew Everest. It was a pleasure to see these teams improving as the season went on, showing plenty of energy, enthusiasm, team spirit and camaraderie.

I would like to thank Premier team member Blake Coburn who carried out mid-week club team coaching and school umpiring. Special thanks to John Thompson and Tom O’Carroll who ensured our Junior teams played on first-class wickets.
