THE 2016 FREMANTLE SEAFOOD FESTIVALThe Fremantle Seafood Festival will be held on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th February 2016, from 10am to 5pm at Fishing Boat Harbour, Fremantle. The Fremantle Seafood Festival celebrates the abundance of seafood and the history of the industry that the Fremantle Port city is famous for. With a world-class array of fresh, organic local produce, combined with the vibrant, fun ambience of Fremantle, the Fremantle Seafood Festival is a food event like no other. The Festival attracts locals and tourists, food and wine enthusiasts, and families looking for a day out. In 2015, visitor numbers were close to 10,000, with 20,000 visitors expected for a two day festival in 2016. The location on Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour is idyllic in its heritage and history, plus its modern amenities and attractions. The Fremantle Seafood Festival has full support of the WA Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC) and the City of Fremantle.

FREMANTLE FISHING BOAT HARBOUR Fremantle is the centre of the fishing industry in WA. Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour is a commercial marina and provides large sheltered mooring areas, wharf space for vessels up to 60 metres, refuelling facilities and support services to the Fremantle fishing industry. The Fishing Boat Harbour was built between 1919 and 1922 with stone from Rocky Bay. A 300-metre breakwater was constructed to provide an anchorage for fishing vessels. South Jetty was immediately adjacent and included a fish market (removed in 1929). A southern breakwater was constructed in 1962 and land reclaimed to house fishing companies and service industries. Between 1969 and 1972, up to 120 fishing boats were housed in the harbour and in 1982, construction of a boat lifting facility commenced.

Today, The Fishing Boat Harbour features a wide variety of restaurants, a brewery, short stay accommodation, function facilities, high-speed jet boat rides, charter sailing tours, the Western Australian Maritime Museum Shipwreck Galleries and more. These businesses all operate in the environment of a working harbour where there is a constant passing parade of fishing vessels and daily fishing industry activities. Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour is a unique tourist location and provides an array of very special visitor experiences. Specialising in the best seafood the Indian Ocean has to offer, there is a wide cuisine range on offer from the many restaurants and cafés. The Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour is located in the heart of Fremantle – it is the home for over 400 fishing boats and surrounded by boardwalks, restaurants, cafes, bars entertainment and accommodation facilities.

THE SEAFOOD FESTIVAL VISIONAs the Fremantle Seafood Festival grows, management and the committee are striving to maintain the friendly and welcoming atmosphere currently enjoyed. The festival is developing to incorporate multiple entertainment areas to cater for a variety of events and activities. In the spirit of community and family-friendly events, the festival will remain a free event with access to the majority of the festival entertainment areas, introducing a ticketed aspect for exclusive activities to the event by way of a “Fringe Festival” structure. With appropriate financial support and funding the festival’s intent is to constantly review, reduce and remove ‘forced ticketed’ activities.

As the festival continues to evolve and grow, this is an ideal opportunity to convey the important message of sustainability and conservation to the public. Festival management has already begun communications with the Western Australian Department of Fisheries on this opportunity to engage and educate the public. Another objective of the education aspect of the festival is to promote the ‘brand’ of Western Australian seafood and encourage people to ‘buy fresh and buy local’.

The long-term plan is to continue to build the event, promote to an international market and attract international tourism. The event has potential to be run over two weekends and will attract interest from international chefs to attend.

MISSION STATEMENTThe Fremantle Seafood Festival embraces the relationship the state holds with its precious marine resources and operates on the following five point mission statement:• Celebrating Western Australia’s premium seafood and prosperous aquaculture.• Sharing the history of the Western Australian fishing industry and the City of Fremantle.• Bringing national and international focus to Western Australia and Fremantle to build awareness of

where our premium seafood is produced.• Nurturing the relationship between the wider community and Western Australia’s marine life and

the fishing industry.• Education on the importance of sustainability and conservation of Western Australia’s marine life.
