    TEACHING

JASON ZARA Associate Professor of Engineering and Applied Science

Professor Zara has worked for 19 years in the development of novel cancer imaging instrumentation and software to approach the detection and evaluation of epithelial cancers, epilepsy, and other human diseases. He combines cutting-edge microfabrication techniques with both ultrasound and optical imaging. In 2006, Professor Zara received the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation Early Career Translational Research Award for his work in microfabricated OCT scanners. He holds seven U.S. patents and previously founded two start-up companies, including a GW spin-off, Lumacoustic Systems, LLC. Professor Zara came to GW at the beginning of the BME undergraduate program in 2002. He teaches courses on biomedical engineering and medical imaging at both the undergraduate and graduate level, and has been the recipient of various awards, including Professor of the Year in Biomedical Engineering from the Engineers Council every year from 2014–2019. Professor Zara has received research support from the Wallace Coulter Foundation, the Army Research Laboratories, and the Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Foundation, as well as funding from the Kern Family Foundation to improve engineering education.

    UNIVERSITY SERVICE

FORREST MALTZMAN Professor of Political Science and of Educational Leadership

Professor Maltzman’s teaching and research focuses on the institutions of American national government, and he is especially interested in the factors that shape decision-making within Congress and the Supreme Court. His current research centers on enriching our understanding of how and when legal doctrines guide judicial decision-making. In addition to teaching, Dr. Maltzman served as the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs from 2016–2019. He has contributed articles to the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Political Research Quarterly, and Judicature, and is the author of Competing Principals: Committees, Parties, and the Organization of Congress (Michigan 1997). He is also the co-author, along with Jim Spriggs and Paul Wahlbeck, of Crafting Law on the Supreme Court: The Collegial Game (Cambridge 2000) and, along with Sarah Binder, of Advice and Dissent: The Struggle to Shape the Federal Judiciary (Brookings, 2009).

  • SCHOLARSHIP

SARAH BINDER Professor of Political Science

Professor Binder’s work focuses on the politics of legislative institutions, including their origins, development and impact on legislative policy outcomes. Her most recent work examines the ways in which politics and economics intersect to shape the governance of and decision making by the Federal Reserve. Dr. Binder’s most recent book is The Myth of Independence: How Congress Governs the Federal Reserve, co-authored with Mark Spindel (Princeton, 2017). Her previous books include Advice & Dissent: The Struggle to Shape the Federal Judiciary, co-authored with Forrest Maltzman (Brookings 2009), Stalemate: Causes and Consequences of Legislative Gridlock (Brookings, 2003), Minority Rights, Majority Rule: Partisanship and the Development of Congress (Cambridge, 1997) and Politics or Principle? Filibustering in the United States Senate, co-authored with Steven S. Smith (Brookings, 1997). Her work has also appeared in the American Political Science Review, Journal of Politics, Legislative Studies Quarterly, and elsewhere.
