This nine weeks, we have learned a lot about different ways we can analyze data. Box-and-whisker plots, circle graphs, line graphs, and scatter plots to name just a few.

Anticipatory Set

TODAY we are going to look at 2 other types of graphs: Frequency Tables and Histograms

Show Tree Map showing characteristics of different types of graphs learned so far. Include frequency table and histogram.

Why would you want to represent data in a Frequency Table or Histogram?

Well, last year I was interested in trying to find out how many of my students were pet lovers like Parris Hilton and Miley Cyrus.

Frequency Tables

Definition

It is a table that lists each item in a data set and the number of times each item occurs. Tally marks are used to keep track of how many times an item occurs.

Example

Mrs. Berg asked 18 students in her class… “How many pets do you own?”

Responses: 0, 4, 2, 1, 6, 2, 0, 1, 2, 6, 3, 2, 4, 1, 7, 2, 2, 8

Definition It is a bar graph that can be used to illustrate the frequency of a set of data.

The height of each bar shows the frequency of data within that interval.

(Note: There are no spaces between the bars on a histogram)
