SUMMER READING AND WRITING REQUIREMENTS FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL – 2011 Rising 7 th Grade Students Rising 7 th graders are required to read three books and complete assignments for each. 1. Read these two books: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelson Assignment: Touching Spirit Bear will be an important part of our language arts unit. Please read or review this book in late summer so that it is fresh in your thoughts. Think carefully and record 3-5 questions that you might share in class to promote discussion of the themes and elements of this novel. Pick one project below for The Hunger Games. During our first w eek back at school, you will be asked t o bring in your project and present it to your class. This is a great opportunity to show us your imaginative and insightful thinking skills. Ideas: Make an ABC book Create a collage portraying significant story details Design a bookmark Write a book review presenting your honest interpretation and opinion of the book Make a story map Create a diorama based on a pivotal scene from the book Write a poem about a character or the story Make a Venn diagram comparing two characters (can be from different books) Draw a timeline of events in the book Create a piece of artwork based on the book Choose an aspect of the book that connects directly to your personal life. Write a work of poetry or prose that explains the connection.  Design a book jacket 2. Choose one group choice book (listed and described on the following pages) . Students who have just finished our 6 th grade program have already chosen the book they plan to read for this portion of summer reading. Students who are new to the school should choose one book from the group choice list below and email their selection to [email protected] . Assignment for group choice book: Illustrate either in a single picture or in a five frame cartoon one of your favorite scenes and be prepared to explain its significance. Write a 100 – 150 word description of an interesting character in the bo ok, also telling how the character contributed to the plot of the story. Write five open-ended discussion questions (not f actual questions or questions that seek a “yes’ or “no” response). The questions should lead to discussion of ideas or themes that are presented in the book.
