SUMMER READING AND WRITING REQUIREMENTS
FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL – 2011
Rising 7th Grade Students
Rising 7th
graders are required to read three books and complete assignments for each.
1. Read these two books:
The Hunger Games by Suzanne CollinsTouching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelson
Assignment:
Touching Spirit Bear will be an important part of our language arts unit. Please read or review this book in latesummer so that it is fresh in your thoughts. Think carefully and record 3-5 questions that you might share in classto promote discussion of the themes and elements of this novel.
Pick one project below for The Hunger Games. During our first week back at school, you will be asked to bring inyour project and present it to your class. This is a great opportunity to show us your imaginative and insightfulthinking skills.
Ideas:
• Make an ABC book
• Create a collage portraying significant story details
• Design a bookmark • Write a book review presenting your honest interpretation and opinion of the book • Make a story map • Create a diorama based on a pivotal scene from the book • Write a poem about a character or the story • Make a Venn diagram comparing two characters (can be from different books) • Draw a timeline of events in the book • Create a piece of artwork based on the book •
Choose an aspect of the book that connects directly to your personal life. Write a work of poetry or prose thatexplains the connection.

2. Choose one group choice book (listed and described on the following pages). Students who have justfinished our 6
thgrade program have already chosen the book they plan to read for this portion of summer
reading. Students who arenew to the school should choose one book from the group choice list below and email their selection [email protected].
Students should complete one of the following three assignments during the summer, which will be usedduring the book discussion.
Assignment for group choice book:
• Illustrate either in a single picture or in a five frame cartoon one of your favorite scenes and beprepared to explain its significance.
• Write a 100 – 150 word description of an interesting character in the book, also telling how thecharacter contributed to the plot of the story.
• Write five open-ended discussion questions (not factual questions or questions that seek a “yes’ or “no” response). The questions should lead to discussion of ideas or themes that are presented in thebook.
