Monthly FactThe MRI scanner was invented in Nottingham by Sir Peter Mansfield, a physics lecturer at the University of Nottingham. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), uses magnetic fields and radio waves to provide detailed images of organs inside the human body. In 1976 for the first demonstration of live human anatomy, Mansfield scanned the finger of a PHD student and later completed his first full body scan in 1978. Sir Peter Mansfield of Beeston was awarded a Nobel prize in 2003, and he even has a Nottingham Tram named after him. He passed away in 2017 at age 83.

A great start to 2020 as the team welcomes a number of new volunteers since January; Susan Bramman explains “I want to help, to make a positive difference to the place where I live. The environment and waste are such important issues at the moment and I hope that by seeing us out collecting litter will inspire others to litter less and clean up Clifton with us.

The Pride of Clifton Awards

This super event was held on 12th January this year.

Cllrs Kevin Clarke and Maria Watson hosted the event. Cllr Watson explained “Pride of Clifton was started in 2017 by the Clifton Donation Group to recognise the

amazing children within Clifton. We had 18 nominations this year and all 18 received a certificate and a medal”.

This year there were extra Awards; Special Recognition Award for the Summerwood Adult Day Centre team of wonderful Citizens that go out weekly clearing litter locally. And super young litter heroes’ locals, Madison Murden and Jaxon Rayment both aged 7 also received awards for their fantastic efforts in clearing litter too; they are a credit to their parents and the community.

Nottingham Trent University (NTU)

Contributing to the local community, NTU continues to help keeping the grass banks that front the NTU railing litter free and have now officially joined Nottingham Clean Champions. Reuben Gregory NTU Facilities Coordinator ensures a team goes out 3 times a week.

Last year NTU participated in a number of community events and will continue this year. Any business can apply to be part of the Nottingham Clean Champions initiative and Nottingham City Council will provide relevant equipment for them to use. Nottingham born Alan Spree has recently released his new book titled Nottingham: The Postcard Collection. The book is a fascinating portrait of Nottingham presented through a remarkable collection of historical postcards.

In Nottingham: The Postcard Collection, author Alan Spree has drawn on a remarkable selection of old postcards to give a pictorial record of life in Nottingham from the late nineteenth century to the early 1950s. Although much of Nottingham has changed over the years, many landmarks have

remained and will be familiar today. The postcards show the changes to Nottingham’s fabric and its community adapting and changing over the course of this period.

This fascinating collection of images will be of special interest to those who have lived in Nottingham or know it well.

Clifton is featured within his book, here you can see two examples. The above image is taken looking northeast along Village Road and the image below is taken from where Village Road bends off on an easterly direction. The village at the time consisted of a small settlement with Clifton Hall and St Mary’s Church to the west on Holgate. Running west to east was Nethergate, with the Village Road running in a semicircle from each end of it to the north.

The book can be purchased at Amazon, bookshops such as Waterstones and it is available in Kindle, Kobo and iBook formats.

About the author: Alan Spree is the great grandson of the postcard publisher, John Henry Spree. Alan was born in Nottingham and went to school in Bilborough.

A group of 11 local friends are taking on the Mighty Hike Peak challenge on 25th July in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Mighty Hike is a 26-mile walk across the beautiful challenging hilly terrain of the Peak District. Inspiration for the group to take on this crazy challenge is just how many of those within the group have been touched by cancer either personally or through family and friends. This is a challenge with a

difference as some of the group are seasoned runners therefore walking is not their normal activity.

Walking sounds easy, but it uses many different muscles and given the distance, it will mean a very long time on their feet.

The 11 members taking part are made up of five ladies from Clifton, one person from Gotham, one from Radcliffe, a Ruddington resident, one from Burton Joyce and two

from Barton In Fabis. The group of Nottingham hikers together make up an incredible team effort to support this great cause.

To date, the group have completed two preparatory walks in the craziest of weather including Sunday 9th February when the UK was hit by storm Ciara and they faced rain, hail and gale force winds, all of which made the 13 mile walk a joyous occasion.

The team have a minimum of £2750 to raise between them by July and have now reached the halfway point to date. Fundraising so far has included hamper raffles, a supermarket bag pack and the traditional asking family members, friends and work colleagues.

Future fundraising events include a cake sale at the Beeston parkrun to celebrate International Women’s Day on the 7th March, a table top sale and a Social 5km fun run /walk in June which ends with pizza.

A local couple from Clifton recounts their story of Tinker the cat. Here Leon and Barbara Taylor share the touching story of how Tinker came into their lives:

About four years ago my wife called me into the garden to look at a very bedraggled elderly black and white cat. We gave him a meal of dog food (all that we had) which he ate with relish. After having a close look at him we could see that he had lost one eye (which was stitched up) and that he smelt terrible both in breath and body odour, plus he had fleas. Despite his looks and disabilities, we decided that he needed a home.

After many visits to the vets and the removal of ten teeth, treatment for ear mites and fleas, together with micro-chipping and a full set of vaccinations, he exploded into our home and neighbourhood, the “Mike Tyson of the cat world”.

After many months, Tinker had made his home with us and eventually was accepted by the

local moggies and our neighbours.

During a further visit to the vets we were informed that Tinker’s one good eye had previously been damaged and that he was sadly going to become totally blind.

Over the next two months this sadly became apparent, Tinker was blind. After a few weeks of walking into doors, legs and line posts he seemed to accept the situation and adjusted his speed and gait

accordingly. All the neighbours were informed about Tinker’s problems and he became a local celebrity.

Tinker always patrolled his patch, a municipal garage area and local housing complex, several times a day. Many happy days, weeks, months and years passed without and troubles for Tinker.

On 9th November 2019, Tinker went out in the early hours of the

morning to patrol his area and was never seen again. After contacting the RSPCA, Cats Protection, putting his picture on Facebook via local pet’s groups, leafletting all the homes in the area, contacting the Council and all the local vets, plus spending many hours searching and calling his name, but this was all to no avail.

We hope daily that by some miracle, our Tinker will turn up but as yet, he hasn’t. We wonder, is he alive and well, has he found a new home, is he dead? I hope one day that the micro-chip firm will contact us and tell us he is alive and that we can collect him from another area, town or city. We still have his basket and food waiting for his return, why? Because he left a Tinker sized hole in our hearts.

As the current side strives to regain top-flight status, DUNCAN HAMILTON looks back to a high-noon showdown in Tokyo when Nottingham Forest were on the brink of being crowned champions of the world... The beginning of the end in so many ways.

BRIAN Clough stared across the parched ground and the banks of empty wooden seating. It was a bright, cold Tuesday in Tokyo and Nottingham Forest were about to begin a training session. The sky was an unblemished, hard Delft blue. Clough, arms folded tight against his chest, stood on the touchline, which had been freshly marked. He dug the toe of his right trainer into the ground and a billow of dust came up, rising as high as his ankle. Clough glanced down and then twisted his face into an expression of contempt. He looked like an exasperated traveller, who’d trekked far to glimpse something the guide book had sworn was an unmissable splendour and now felt

horribly cheated when he saw it.

There wasn’t a tuft of turf on the pitch. The bare, corn-coloured earth was gritty and uneven. The ball would bounce haphazardly. A stud could slip. The flesh might be ripped raw in a fall. Clough was aghast. ‘The Japanese are capable of making a radio the size of your thumb and a TV the size of your hand,’ he said. ‘So

why can’t anyone do something straightforward like grow a blade of grass?’

This was the Olympic Stadium, where in 1964 Lynn ‘The Leap’ Davies and Mary Rand each won Gold in the Long Jump and Ann Packer claimed another in the 800m with an outside burst so improbable that the excited pitch of David Coleman’s commentary

along the home straight was high and incredulous, as if witnessing a human miracle.

Clough had reluctantly brought Forest here to face the Uruguayans, Nacional, for what the organisers described as The Intercontinental Cup and everyone else called The World Club Championship. Forest were still Champions of Europe; Nacional had lifted the Copa Libertadores.

The neutrality of Japan was necessary to bring them together because no British team had been willing to journey to South America since Manchester United were physically savaged by the Argentinians, Estudiantes, in the autumn of 1968. A year earlier Celtic had been similarly roughed up by Racing, also of Argentina. Warfare with a ball instead of bullets, those matches were...

The Nottingham Model Railway Society was established in 1971, the group have organised an annual model railway exhibition in Nottingham since the mid 1970s. Starting with shows at the Victoria Leisure Centre until the show outgrew the size of the hall in 2000, they then moved to Harvey Hadden Sports Centre.

Recently, they have moved from having a large show in the sports centre to having a small, friendly, local show. The first local show was in 2019 and occurred at Highbank Community Centre. The show was very successful and many Clifton residents came along for the first time to a model railway show.

Join us at the next show: Nottingham Model Railway Society Spring Show 2020 at Highbank Community Centre, Farnborough Road on Saturday 14 & Sunday 15 March 2020. It will be open from 10:00 - 17:00 Saturday, 10:00 - 16:00 Sunday. Admission price -

adults £4, children £1.

We will have 8 model railway layouts varying in size and scale along with some trade stands selling model railway equipment. We also have a couple of demonstrations; one showing how to build model buildings and one showing how to get started in model railways. There will be opportunities for visitors to get ‘hands on’ and try out operating a layout of making a building.

If visitors are inspired to get more involved, we welcome new members. We have a clubroom where we are building several models and meet on Tuesday evenings. Our club room is in Mapperley.

More than 1,000 trees have been snapped and cut down just days after being planted in a “senseless act of vandalism”.

Nottingham City Council planted a total of 1,600 trees at the Clifton Playing Fields in Farnborough Road on December 6, in a bid to help improve the local environment and meet the city’s goal of planting 50,000 trees by 2023.

However, at the end of December it was discovered that all but 20 trees had been snapped or cut down by vandals using secateurs or pruning clippers. Only holes in the ground were left when council officers attended, but 200 trees were

fortunately in a suitable state to be salvaged and will now be replanted.

Councillor Dave Trimble, portfolio holder for culture and leisure, said: “It is really disappointing to see such a senseless act of vandalism. We are planting trees because they bring numerous benefits – not just an improvement to local environments, providing habitats for wildlife and health benefits for local people through carbon dioxide absorption, but also the part trees play in tackling climate change. We will be working with the local community to replant more trees at Clifton as well as other locations around the city to meet our goal of up to 50,000 new trees by 2023.”

A consultation is due to take place with the Clifton community, and the Police is investigating.

Nottingham Gas & UK Renewable Heating give a big thank you to Mdot Marketing A former church in Clifton could

be demolished to make way for council houses.

Nottingham City Council chiefs have agreed a budget to acquire the land of the former United Reform Church, on Southchurch Drive. The plan is for the site to be managed by Nottingham City Homes - and up to 24 apartments could eventually be built.

Nick Murphy, chief executive at NCH, said: “NCH is looking at a number of places across the city to build much-needed homes for local people on our council house waiting list.

“This site on Southchurch Drive is just one in the pipeline and we will be submitting a planning application in the next few months.”

As part of the redevelopment, the church could be knocked down and demolition is hoped to start in the next six months.

A city council document, outlining the decision, states: “Due to the new-build council housing programme, alongside the significant demand for affordable housing in Clifton, this decision proposes acquiring the site to include within the future development plans for the city.

“An early capacity study has been carried out on the site and it is estimated that around 18-24 apartments could be located here.

“It would be essential that NCH arrange for the building to be demolished straight away to prevent vandalism, anti-social behaviour and holding costs.”

Come on board for the Nottingham Harmonic Choir’s tempestuous voyage around Britain! Herbert Howells’ dramatic and rarely performed setting of the old Scottish ballad Sir Patrick Spens tells of the eponymous hero’s ill-fated voyage across the North Sea to Norway.

Songs of the Fleet, Stanford’s arrangement of five Newbolt nautical poems, are both stirring and fun. Particularly exciting is a rare performance of the melodrama The Wreck of the Hesperus by Hamish MacCunn. The orchestra will perform Mendelssohn’s popular The Hebrides and Britten’s atmospheric Four Sea Interludes.

The Clifton Community and Family Support Group are a small non-profit local charity based in Clifton, supporting local people who find themselves in short term financial difficulty. This can be anything from, but not limited to, loss of a job, fire, flood, fleeing domestic violence or benefit changes. Each request for support is put to the committee for approval and based on its own merits.

The Charity was Founded by Karen Humble in Dec 2012. Karen had been in a situation with low income before and never wanted anyone to ever feel the way she had with no one to turn to.

Clifton Community and Family support group work alongside the NG11 food bank by supplying fuel

vouchers to families in need.

CCFSG have a bidding page on Facebook called ‘CCFSG sales’. This bidding site is where any donations they receive, not gifted on to families are auctioned off and the money put towards items needed for supported families and extra funds go to funding events in the community. Any donated items unsold are gifted on to other charities so nothing goes to waste.

During 2020 CCFSG are doing ‘play in the park sessions’ during the school holidays, which has received funding from local east and west councillors towards play equipment. The events will be free of charge and are based on encouraging children to go out in the fresh air and be active. The

events will be held on the local playgrounds around Clifton and are open to families and carers. Dates and times will be advertised on the Clifton community and family support group page on Facebook and via local posters.

On Saturday 22nd August CCFSG are having a community fun day starting at 12pm in the Flower park.

This is a free event with a lot of activities including tug of war, colour run and a treasure hunt. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic and join in with the fun.

CCFSG also run a raffle and tombola page on Facebook where all money raised will be spent back into the community.

In 2019 Community support included, but not limited to, £250 gifted to The Ark children’s after school club, £450 to the acts of kindness, Christmas boxes for the homeless, £360 to enthusiasm children’s youth club, support towards the organisation of Picnic in the Park and the Teddy Bears Picnic and gifting a tablet to a young gentleman starting college.

Over the last year CCFSG have had some amazing support from the community, including over

Christmas. CCFSG received gifts for families, who thought they would have nothing, presents for children, mums and dads plus 14 food hampers of complete Christmas dinners and treats. Clifton community’s generosity is amazing, and we couldn’t do any of it without the community’s support and together we really do make a difference.
