Last spring Erin Dingmannmissed the Class A State GirlsGolf Tournament by onestroke.

The Kimball/Eden Valley-Watkins sophomore made sureshe did not have to deal withthe heartbreak two years in arow.

Dingmann shot rounds of 81and 83 earning one of the fiveindividual state qualifyingspots during Friday’s Section5AATournament at Crow Riv-er Golf Club in Hutchinson.

“This is everything I’veworked for,” Dingmann said.“I’m just really excited to be inthe atmosphere of it and playwith some people that maybe Ihaven’t had a chance to playwith. It’s a good experience andI hope to build off that for nextyear, too.”

Dingmann’s two-day total of164 was third individually andkept K/EV-W in the hunt forthe team title.

The Cubs shot 371 as a teamJune 3 and trailed Becker bysix strokes heading into Fri-day’s final round.

K/EV-W closed with a 404and finished fourth as a team.

Dingmann, who consistentlyshoots around 80 for 18 holes,is confident she can post a cou-ple of low scores as a state tour-ney rookie.

The Class AA state meetgets under way at 7:30 a.m.June 16 at Ridges at SandCreek in Jordan.

“I have a couple practicerounds. I’ll go in and see what

the course is all about,” Ding-mann said. “I’m hoping to geta round in the 70s there. Ithink I can if I can capitalizeon my short game and every-thing.” Results June 3 & 5Section 5AA TournamentAt Crow River GC, Hutchinson

There’s fair fishing, goodfishing, and excellent fish-ing, but none could touchthis year’s opening week ofbass fishing.

It’s not the number of fish, even though I caught quite afew, but the size. Big bass –chunky bass that weighedfrom four to seven pounds –came one after another, busting into the sky and bor-ing downward like finned ce-ment blocks.

Wrist-tiring, drag-scream-ing, rod-bending bass thatjust wouldn’t give up.

In 30 years of fishing localwaters, I’d never seen any-thing like it.

Because I had a number ofcommitments to take care of,I didn’t have time to takeout a boat and had to fishfrom shore or the west pieron Lake Ripley. It didn’tmake any difference.

The first day, May 31, sev-en bass came to the net. Ofthese, only three were underfour pounds, and one pushedthe seven-pound mark.

The next day I took threebass in an hour and a half, all of which were at leastfour pounds.

On June 3, I had threehours of fishing time and Icaught seven bass, of whichonly one weighed less thanfour pounds.

Finally, on Friday, with anhour and half of fishing, thesizes tapered off with threefish caught, all two poundsor smaller.

Should this week notseem unusual, keep in mindthat several Watercade con-tests, with 40 boats out, were won with bass underfour pounds.

All but two of the smallerones, which I gave to otheranglers, were returned tothe water.

The first day, all of thefish came from shallow wa-

ter, with one taking the lureabout five feet from theshoreline. The second day, they were deeper, with all ofthe fish coming from at leasta six-foot depth.

Perhaps most surprisingwas that all of the fish ham-mered the same lure: a five-inch root beer colored Senkoplastic worm.

It is a deceptively simple-looking lure, resembling asmall, wet cigar, with nofins, wings or tendrils forenhancement. The Senko, from Gary Yamamoto baits, has been a favorite of minefor years and I have neverbeen able to find any softlure – elaborate or not –that can match its produc-tivity for largemouth bass.

In theory, it should be apoor choice as a search baiton large flats. Unlike a vi-brating crankbait or spin-nerbait it cannot rapidlycover wide expanses of wa-ter and there’s nothing todraw fish from a distance.

Lures like the Senko areusually at their best in spe-cific locations, like pockets inreeds.

It does have one advan-tage over many similarbaits. Chock full of salt, itweighs enough to easily becast without additionalweight.

This lets it settle slowlyand horizontally, and unlikeweighted worms, does notplunge down through emerg-ing weeds, but rather settleson top of them, enhancingits visibility.

Yamamoto suggests a sim-

ple lift-and-drop routine, let-ting the worm settle to thebottom, then lifting it upabout six inches and lettingdrop and do its thing.

I’ve tried other retrieves, but this still seems to be thebest. Apparently the wormhas an enticing appeal as itdrops since fish always seemto hit as the lure is goingdownward.

I have literally dozens ofbass lures, some really good,

and some not so productive, but you can bet that whatev-er I try, there’s going to beSenkos standing by as abackup.

Brandon Walz singled and scored a run for EV-W.Matt Geislinger and Sargent also singled for the Ea-

gles, who have outscored their opponents 242 to 56 thisseason.

Tomsche, who coached EV-W to the state tourney in2001, believes his team will benefit from the extra restthat comes with staying in the winner’s bracket thispostseason.

“In 2001 we did it the hard way,” Tomsche said. “Welost a heartbreaker in the first round of sections and hadto beat Hinckley twice to go to state. Now the roles arereversed.

“This thing isn’t a done deal yet. We’ve got to go outthere and take care of business.” Results June 3Eden Valley-Watkins 12, Osakis 2Osakis ........................ 010 01 - 2 3 4EV-W (22-0) ............... 503 4x - 12 12 1

stiff competition,” Arndt said. “I can seewhere my game is actually at. I cancompete and if I stick with those guys, Iknow I can compete with the best in theworld.”

Eric Axley shot rounds of 62 and 63and finished 17-under par to win theevent. Stuart Appleby, Tom Lehman,Ben Curtis, Alex Cejka and Davis LoveIII were some of the more notablenames to qualify out of Columbus.

Arndt, who turned pro two years ago, played with Bryce Molder and HenryPlager, an amateur from Carmel, Ind.Molder and Plager missed the cut.

Arndt earned his spot in the section-al tournament by being one of 11 localqualifiers to make the cut at HazeltineNational Golf Club.

Arndt shot a 1-over par 73 to finishthird out of 150 golfers at the local qual-ifier May 17.

battled shoulder to shoulderwith each other,” Warren said.“We both put it out on the lineand ran our hearts out, Iguess.”

Fifteen minutes after therace, Warren was still feelingthe effects of his gutsy effort.

“I got light-headed and hada nauseated feeling,” Warrensaid. “Once I got some waterin me, I felt a lot better.”

Saksa and Warren turnedin the two fastest times amongall state qualifiers in the 200,making them favorites for agold medal during Saturday’sfinal. Warren is more focusedon Friday’s prelims.

“Prelims are going to be themost stressful part,” Warrensaid. “You can’t run a 1:56 andthink you are going to run a1:55 on Saturday, but youcan’t be too conservativewhere you don’t make the fi-nals.

“This puts a target on myback, but at the same time itgives me confidence that I cando well at the state meet.”

Magana also qualified for

his first state meet, winningthe 300-meter hurdles with apersonal-best time of 42.44.

Magana chased down An-nandale’s Cooper Gauldin atthe finish line, edging him bythree-hundredths of a second.

“I never thought I would getfirst in the section, but it feltamazing,” Magana said.“That was a fun race.”

Magana began the seasonas an 800 runner, but withWarren scoring big points inthat event, Satterlee movedhim to the hurdles.

Without any practice for theevent, Magana finished sec-ond with a time of 43.77 at theLitchfield triangular on April27. He’s been hurdling eversince.

“Form isn’t everything inhurdles,” Satterlee said. “Ifyou have speed in between, you can make up for lack ofform. Billy has a good kick. That last 70 meters is wherehe catches a lot of guys.”

Goraczkowski qualified forher third consecutive statemeet, placing second in thegirls shot put with a mark of36-5.

Goraczkowski placed sec-ond at last year’s state meet, but has struggled to producebig throws. The school-recordholder in the event (43-4 1/4)has yet to crack the 40-footmark this season.

“I’ve been struggling all sea-son,” Goraczkowski said.“There’s a few things I need towork on fixing for the statemeet. Hopefully that’s whatmakes it go.”

Goraczkowski has beenthrowing better at practiceand Hamline is one of her fa-vorite competition sites.

“The state meet is what I’vebeen training for all season,”Goraczkowski said. “I’ve had arough season, but I’m hopingto end it right.”

Kramer, Peterson finishfirst, second in discus

Eden Valley-Watkins/Kim-ball junior Shawny Kramerand Atwater-Cosmos-GroveCity senior Jenna Petersonfinished first and second, re-spectively, in the girls discuscompetition.

Kramer and Peterson, the

only state participants fromtheir respective schools, arefirst-time state qualifiers.

Kramer – the EV-W/Krecord holder in the discus –won the meet with a mark of120-9.

Peterson did not have sec-ond place wrapped up untilher final two throws, whichmeasured 118-10 and 120-4.

“I’m going in rated fourthbased on what girls havethrown at the section meets,”Peterson said. “My goal is toget to the finals. Hopefully Ican do that.”Results June 2Section 5A meet
