SHS Life This week has been another great week for our sporting achievements. I would like to congratulate Year 9 student Alex Barker for his amazing achievements in the British Cycling’s Under 14 National Youth Circuit Series on the Isle of Man over the Bank Holiday weekend. Alex continues to impress us with each competition and we wish him well in the National Track championships and West Midlands Circuit Championship. After her success at the Worlds Irish Dance Competition in Maastricht, Netherlands Hollie-Mae Reedman won the British Championships for Irish dancing at the weekend which is testament to her dedication. Please keep us posted of your son/daughter’s successes outside of school so that we can continue to celebrate together. At the weekend, SHS sports fans visited Wembley to watch the Women’s FA Cup Final on Saturday as Chelsea beat their arch rivals Arsenal 3-1. Trips like this are made possible by collaborating with the other SAET schools and I would like to thank the staff who give up their spare time to accompany the students on the trip. Last night our Year 12 and 13 students enjoyed a wonderful 2 course meal and danced the night away at their annual Spring Ball at Wharton Park, Bewdley. This event gives the students the chance to let their hair down before the examination season comes in to full force. Tomorrow, our Duke of Edinburgh Bronze students will undertake their practice navigation walk in the Wyre Forest area. Staff will work with the students to ensure that they are confident with their compass and map skills before they embark on their 2 day expedition in a few weeks’ time. Finally, we look forward to seeing all of our parents/carers of Year 7 students to discuss students’ progress at the forthcoming Parents Evening on Monday 21 May. Women’s FA Cup Final

Mr James, Miss Radio and Mr Wakefield accompanied 33

SHS students and 2 from Baxter College to watch arch rivals

Arsenal play Chelsea in this year’s Women’s FA Cup Final.

For many of the students this was their first time visiting

Wembley Stadium and they contributed towards a new

competition record crowd of 45,423 spectators. Chelsea

beat Arsenal 3 - 1 to take home their 2nd FA Cup trophy and

their victory has kept alive their hopes of a domestic double,

with only four more games remaining of the Women's Super

League One season and only goal difference separating

them and current league leaders Manchester City.

Cycling to the Top! Alex Barker 9GB competed in the latest round of British Cycling’s Under 14 National Youth Circuit Series which was held on the Isle of Man over the bank holiday weekend. Commencing on Friday evening, the prologue event was a Time Trial course set out on the Douglas promenade where Alex recorded a time of 1 minute and 54 seconds over the 1,028 metre course to share 5th place with 6 other riders, just 6 seconds off the top spot. Day 2 saw the tour relocating to Jurby, in the north of the island, for a flat 30km around a closed road circuit, which featured an additional points race, whereby the first 3 riders to cross the line are awarded 3,2 and 1 point respectively with the aggregate winner being awarded the green points jersey. The race started in extremely warm conditions, with the riders following the lead car down the narrow back straight before being given the signal to commence racing. All of the 9 points sprints were keenly contested with Alex wining 3 sprints and securing 2nd place in the points classification and an overall 4th place in the race where he averaged an overall speed of 22.8mph. The third and final day saw Alex starting in 6th place overall, 2nd in the points race and 1st in the Team competition. The location for day 3 was Ellerslie, situated near Crosby and renowned for its gruelling 2km climb which sees riders gain 90 metres. With all to play for, Alex and his team members set about attacking on the climb in an attempt to improve GC placings and capture the point’s jersey, whilst retaining the overall team number 1 position. With Alex in a good climbing mood he claimed 2 of the 4 hill sprints to add to his points tally and claimed 6th place overall in the final sprint. An impressive ride which saw him cover over 30kms and climb over 450 metres in just 51:39 minutes. Final results recorded Alex in overall 7th; 2nd in the Points classification and 2nd in the Team competition from a field of over 50 UK selected national riders. Alex’s attention now shifts to qualifying for the National Track championships and preparing for the Mini Paris to Roubaix race, whilst also defending his current lead in the West Midlands Circuit Championship.
