1. WHOLE FOODS 365 Whole Foods has launched its newest innovation: a smaller-store concept where value meets quality. They are hoping this new concept will bring fresh healthy foods to more people in an affordable way every day…365 days a year. The first US store is scheduled to open in May, in Los Angeles. The second will be in Lake Oswego, Oregon, followed by many more locations in the near future. The average store size is approximately 26,000 square feet, where Whole Foods currently range anywhere from 40,000 to 80,000 square feet.

2. STARBUCKS ROASTERYIn December 2014 Starbucks debuted the first Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room in Seattle. The next location is scheduled to open in New York in 2018. This first-of-its-kind coffee experience has customers immersed in the craft of roasting and brewing the finest small lot coffees from around the world. If you’re visiting New York in 2018, make sure to stop by the new high-end 20,000 square foot Starbucks Roastery. The building itself will be something to see, located one block south of Chelsea Market – 61 Ninth Avenue. The new 170,000 square foot building will rise nine stories.

3. PORTILLO’S Chicago-based Portillo’s began as a hot dog stand in 1963 in Villa Park, although not opening it’s first Chicago location until 1994. In 2000, Portillo’s began shipping food to all 50 states. Over the next 13 years, Portillo’s opened in states such as California (2005), Indiana (2006), and Arizona (2013). Now the popular Portillo’s has plans to expand to Florida and Wisconsin.

4. MISSION BARBEQUEMission BBQ opened its doors for business on September 11, 2011. It is no coincidence that they decided to open ten years after our country changed forever. If you ask the founders, Bill and Newt, this was their way of reminding everyone what makes Our Country great – its heroes. Mission BBQ currently has about 23 locations with plans to open 40 new restaurants by 2018.

5. SHINOLAYou may or may not have heard of Shinola. If you haven’t, that is soon to change. Shinola is a company that opened in 2011 in Detroit, and has been extremely successful due to their high-quality watches, bicycles and leather goods. There are currently six Shinola locations in the US with stores ranging from 1200 to 5,000 square feet. Right now you can find a Shinola store in Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Washington DC and the San Francisco Bay area with more locations opening soon.

6. HAMLEY’S TOY SHOPIn 1760, William Hamley opening Hamley’s Toy Shop in London. William dreamed of opening the best toy shop in the world. The shop was so successful that by 1881 a new branch opened in Regent Street. This location did so well that they added a further five floors of toys! Today, Hamley’s Toy Shop has locations as large as 54,000 square feet in London and 75,000 square feet in Moscow. But, not to worry, Hamley’s has plans to open at least 20 new stores, including ones in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

7. EATALYEataly is the largest Italian marketplace in the world, comprised of a variety of restaurants, food and beverage counters, bakery, retail items, and a cooking school. There are currently two locations in the US, including New York City and Chicago, with 30 worldwide locations. A second New York location is set to open later this year with a Los Angeles store scheduled to open in 2017. There is plenty to do in the massive 58,000 square foot location in New York.

8. LIDLLidl is a German global discount supermarket chain. Lidl currently operates over 10,000 stores across Europe with plans to start opening US stores by 2018. Word is Lidl has plans to open as many as 100 US locations in the initial expansion phase. Each store is at least 36,000 square feet.

9. NANDO’S PERI PERI CHICKENOriginating in South Africa, Nando’s Peri Peri Chicken opened it’s first doors in the US in 2008 in Washington DC. Since then, they have opened 13 additional stores in the states. The restaurant sizes range from 2,500 to 3,500 square feet.

10. MUJIMuji is a Japanese retail company which sells a wide variety of household and consumer goods. Muji started in the 1980’s with only 40 products, ranging from stationary to clothing and food items. By the end of the 2000’s, Muji has more than 7,000 products they sell. There are currently 10 store locations, including stores in New York and Palo Alto, CA with average store sizes anywhere from 4,500 to 11,000 square feet. Their next target is the US market, so be ready to see a Muji store near you very soon.

11. PRIMARKPrimark was founded in Dublin, Ireland, in 1969 under the name Penneys. Primark offers a diverse range of products, including newborn and kids clothing, women’s and men’s clothing, homeware and beauty products. Their clothes are on the low end of the market. With store size ranging anywhere from 75,000 to 80,000 square feet, get ready to see more stores coming soon. Primark has plans to open about five to six US stores by the end of 2016.
