A few weeks ago, I shared a video in the sermon

that asked the provocative question, “Are we

more like a cruise ship or a battleship?” The

video said that we often evaluate the church as

we would a cruise ship. We ask:

1. Do I like the music they play in the ballroom?

2. Do I like the captain and his crew?

3. Is the service good?

4. Am I well fed?

5. Are my needs met promptly?

6. Is the cruise pleasant?

7. Am I comfortable?

8. Do I want to cruise with them again?

But perhaps a better analogy for the church is a

battleship. We should ask about the church:

1. Is the ship on a clear and noble mission?

2. Is the ship able to endure storms at sea?

3. Does the captain submit to a higher authority?

4. Are the tactics and moves of the enemy well

understood by the crew?

5. Does the crew have proper training and

experience?

6. Are they taught to be disciplined and vigilant?

7. Do they take the battle seriously?

At a recent staff meeting, we were discussing the

question, “What has God been teaching you

during this season of your ministry?” I was not

alone when I shared that God is helping me to

assess where I am in my walk with Christ and

where the church is in their mission. I have

been asking myself (and even more importantly,

I have been asking God), “Are we the church you

want us to be? Are we being faithful to our

mission to make disciples?”

I continue to be convinced that God has greater things planned for our congregation, but we

must choose whether we want to engage in battle or just sit on the decks. No matter how much

we might enjoy the luxuries of a cruise, there is no greater satisfaction than being a part of

something greater than ourselves. Something that will last for eternity. Something that will

please the heart of God. I trust that as we move forward, you will man your battle station and

get involved in the mission of the church. We are becoming the church God calls us to be.

Church News & Notes A Message from Staff member Angie

Howard:

To the Leadership Team and Beloved Congre-

gation,

As some of you may know, I have spent the

past year working two jobs – my full time “day

job” as an office manager at a local engineer-

ing firm as well as being the Director of Tradi-

tional Worship here at the church. While I

love both positions, I have discovered that I

just cannot continue to work 60+ hours a week

and be the mom that God has called me to be.

Even though I absolutely love being in minis-

try at our church, I believe that God is calling

me to focus on my ministry as a mom to my

son, Andrew. Effective January 1, 2019, I will

be resigning as the Director of Traditional

Worship of First United Methodist Church.

Please know that I do not make this decision

lightly. There has been much prayer and ar-

guing with God about this direction. I abso-

lutely love our church and serving God’s peo-

ple here. I am excited for the changes that

will be happening as a result of the worship

assessment recommendations and look for-

ward to watching the Lord work in and

through our congregation. It is truly an excit-

ing time to be part of First United Methodist

Church!

Let me be clear that I am NOT leaving the

church. I am only resigning my position as a

paid staff member. I will continue to be an

active part of our congregation and am looking

forward to finding new ways in which to serve.

I will also be praying for the one that God is

calling to be the next Director of Traditional

Worship and Choir Director. I know, beyond a

shadow of a doubt, that God is already prepar-

ing that person to share His love with all of

us. I pray that you will accept this person

with as much love and grace as you have me

over the past several years.

May God richly bless each of you,

Angie Howard

UNITED METHODIST MEN

It is with mixed emotions that the Ministry

Team has elected to end the formal activities of

the United Methodist Men (UMM). In our

recent efforts to speak with representatives of

each ministry activity, it was clear that the one

active member in leadership of UMM felt it

best to dissolve the group based on the lack of

functioning over several years. We concur in

that recommendation and will allow our UMM

church charter to expire at the end of its

current term.

We remain blessed with a number of

opportunities for men to be engaged in church

activities. The Bluegrass Concert series will

continue to be led and supported, primarily, by

the men of the church. The Wednesday

morning Bible study will continue to meet and

the recent men’s study on Sunday mornings,

though temporary in its initial offering, could

well become a more regular part of the Sunday

school curriculum. Another missional

opportunity that would be well suited for men

is the prison ministry. These are just a few

options available today, and we hope those will

be expanded as the Engage, Connect, Equip,

and Send Teams further their work.

We are thankful for the work of UMM over

many years in Marysville FUMC and pray that

new opportunities for men to engage in

fellowship and worship with each other will

continue to present themselves.

Church News &Notes MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Our annual

church conference with the District

Superintendent will be Monday evening

FALL FOOD DRIVE

Families are gathering to re-

new their ties and to gobble

up turkey, dressing, and ap-

ple pies. Yet, some neighbors

may have pantries that are

bare. They live on a

"shoestring" budget and feel

despair. Our fall food drive

is a great way to show we

care. Keitha and Gary Simp-

son, operators of the

Marysville Food Pantry, relate that the number

of families seeking food assistance continues to

increase, serving approximately 300 families.

They appreciate any donations, so let us be gen-

erous!

Needed Items: canned fruit and vegetables,

tomato sauce, spaghetti sauce, Hamburger

Helper, macaroni and cheese, stuffing mix,

rice, canned meats (tuna, chicken, spam,

etc.), peanut butter, powdered milk, cook-

ing oil, mustard, catsup, mayonnaise, sal-

ad dressing (no glass please) and coffee.

Please NO GLASS and check expiration

dates on your donated items.

Paper bags will be handed out after each service

on November 4th and 11th. Please fill the bags

and return them to the BFLC closet near the

gym by Sunday, November 18th. The Quake

kids will be shopping and adding their food

items as they repack our bags for easier trans-

porting. Thanks, Quake!! We will take the

filled bags to the food pantry on November 21st.

Trucks, vans, or car drivers are needed to

transport the food. It is a quick and fun trip

around the corner. Call Joan at 937-644-9555 if

you can help with the transportation.

Shelley Williams

We have been VERY busy over the past month. We’ve been bakers baking apple desserts. We’ve

been scientists conducting experiments. We’ve taken a field trip to Leeds Farm to feed and pet

goats, see piglets, slide down the slides, zip down the zip line and of course pick pumpkins and

gourds. We’ve gone camping roasting s’mores and hotdogs over a roaring “campfire”.

Life is great when you are in preschool/pre-k! Oh yes, and we are working hard at writing our

name, learning the letters of the alphabet, reading numbers and hearing a lot of great books!

Mrs. Connie even shared in chapel that Jesus is our Forever Friend! WE LOVE JESUS!

Finance News COMING SOON — Commitment Sunday – November 18, 2018

What is Commitment Sunday? Commitment Sunday is a chance to participate fully in the ministries of

FUMC by making a pledge to support the 2019 operating budget. The book of Proverbs makes a convincing

case for generosity, stating that it honors God, benefits others, and blesses the giver. We will be able to

demonstrate through our pledge whether we have taken this teaching to heart.

How does Commitment Sunday work? For three weeks in early November, Pastor Aaron will help us prayer-

fully consider our pledges as he preaches on the Wisdom of Generosity.

• We will be encouraged by testimonies of others whose stories will challenge us to ask, “What is God call-

ing me to give?”

• During the Commitment Sunday service on Nov. 18th, we will be given a confidential Pledge Card that is

turned in toward the end of worship (advance copies are available at the office or information centers).

• Your commitment will help us set a realistic budget for 2019, allowing us to Love God and All People for

the Transformation of the World.

What if I don’t feel comfortable with Commitment Sunday? Participation is voluntary. The procedure is

done in such a way that no one will feel embarrassment should they choose not to fill out a card.

• All commitments are strictly confidential.

• No home solicitation will be done, but we will send a follow up letter to our members and regular at-

tendees who cannot attend on Nov. 18th.

How much should I pledge? It is up to each person to search their heart and seek God’s direction to decide

how much to give. The Bible speaks of tithing, which has long been understood to mean to pay a tenth of

one’s income. The sermons, testimonies and literature will help you make a decision that fits for you and

your family.

What if I make a pledge and my situation changes? We recognize that financial situations change. If you

find yourself unable to fulfill your pledge, you may contact our Financial Secretary to adjust it.

Should my children pledge separately? They certainly may! Once your children understand the value of

money, they may want to join you in making an annual pledge. They can receive offering envelopes and giv-

ing statements just like you.

What if I can’t be there on Nov. 19th? If you cannot attend, you may put your pledge card in the offering

plate on another Sunday or return it to the church office (Attention Carol Reed, Financial Secretary). You

may also send your pledge by email to [email protected] .

Commitment Sunday -- Nov. 18, 2018

others will be refreshed. Proverbs 11:25

$ ____________ per week, OR $ ______________ per month, OR $ ______________ per year.

Greetings New Attendees and New Members of MFUMC!

The Equip Team is a new team that formed in 2018 and is dedicated to equipping all people to

live as disciples and grow in the wisdom and knowledge of God continually. We have had a joy-

ful year encouraging our church members to commit to small groups, life groups and participate

in retreats, seminars, bibles studies, book studies, etc. It has been exciting getting to grow to-

gether as the Body of Christ!

At our Equip Team meeting, we recently discussed how we are encouraging the new attendees

and new members of MFUMC to grow spiritually and get connected in small groups. Unfortu-

nately, the answer was….”Ummmm….we don’t even know them!” We honestly acknowledged

that our church is large and it is difficult to meet new attendees and new members of our

church. So, at that meeting, we decided to extend to you a free dinner invitation so we can

officially meet and greet you!

On Sunday November 4th The Equip Team is hosting a “Meet and Greet Dinner” for individuals

and families that have begun to worship at our church and/or joined our church over this past

year of 2018.

The dinner will be held at MFUMC in the Upper Room at 6:00. If you and your family would

like to attend, we would be BLESSED to feed you! There will be door prizes and some get to

know you games, so please join us!

PLEASE EMAIL US IF YOU CAN COME: [email protected]

Special Christmas Service

Dearly Beloved,

For many people, Christmas is a time of joy that is filled with gladness and merriment. For those who have lost a loved one, it can be a time of brokenness and loneliness…..leaving one

feeling distant from the joy of the season and rather “blue”.

Join us at Marysville First United Methodist Church for a special Blue Christmas Service on Sunday December 9th @ 6:00 in the Sanctuary. This service is specially designed to provide an intentional time of remembrance, hope, tenderness and encouragement. The service will empha-size the light of Christ found in John 1:5 “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” As the service begins, dim lights will fill the sanctuary and a candle pro-cession will bring a gentle light to the gathered community. The songs, hymns and scripture will be designed to bring you into a time of reflection and continued healing. It will be a set-

apart time of beauty and hope.

We hope you and your family members will join us for this special service and receive the bless-

ings God has prepared for you.

Quake is a weekly opportunity for 7th-12th graders to grow closer to God

and one another. We gather in the Burnside Family Life Center each

week to begin our evening. Our weekly worship time provides a time for

students to learn and worship together, fostering unity in our youth pro-

gram while life groups allow students to go deeper in discipleship with a small group of peers

and adult leaders.

Fellowship Night:

On the first Sunday of most months, we will

have a Fellowship Night from 6-8 p.m. that in-

cludes a free sit-down dinner and group games.

We are always looking for groups within our

church that would be willing to provide this

meal for 50-75 people. If you are willing,

please contact [email protected].

Breakfast Club:

On the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, we

go to Mill Valley’s McDonald’s for Breakfast

Club. Students purchase their own meal, a stu-

dent comes up with the devotional, and we pro-

vide the rides to Marysville High School and

Bunsold Middle School. If there is a delay, we

will push back to an 8:30am start time. If

school is closed, then Breakfast Club is cancelled.

Youth Honduras Send Team:

We are planning to have one of our mission trips to El Sembrador, Honduras which is where

we went in 2017. Please be in prayer for this Send Team as they begin to meet together and

plan this trip for May 25 to June 1, 2019. If interested in the trip, please contact Mark Confer

([email protected]) as soon as possible. Next meeting is November 11th.

Domestic Mission Trip:

Since we are unable to go to SOS this coming year due to our week being bought out by anoth-

PARENTS: Are you finding it hard to plan a night out, or. a night in with your kids out? If your

answer is yes, then we have just the thing for you!

The Methodist youth group, Quake, holds a Parents’ Night Out about once a month during the school year.

Here are the details:

Location: First United Methodist Church

Time: Saturdays from 4:00-8:00pm ****Note the day and time changes.

You are welcome to pick your children up at any time during the night.

Cost: $20 for one child and $5 for each additional child in the family.

Dates: Nov 3, Dec 8, Jan 12, Feb 9, March 9, April 13, May 11

Where does the money go?: All money raised is put into a Missions fund account and used to pay for any trips or events that the youth participate in.

The children are divided into the following groups:

1) Infant - 3 year olds ~ These kids are in the nursery all night. We have 1 adult with 1 or 2 youth, depending on how many kids we have signed up for the night.

2) Preschool ~ These kids are in one of the preschool rooms upstairs from 4-6:00 playing with the kitchen toys, coloring, puzzles, maybe doing a craft, and having a light meal. At 6:00 they come down to the gym and pretty much just run around and scream J or play group games. At 8:00 they join the school age group in the cafe for a snack and to watch a movie until parent pick up time at 8:00. Depending on the size of the group, we will have 1 adult with 2-4 youth.

3) School Age ~ These kids are in the gym and cafe from 4-6:00. We have games and crafts for them to do in the cafe, and they do their own thing in the gym, which is what I like to call controlled chaos :) Most of the kids are running around for the whole 2 hours. At 6:00 they will go into the café for a light meal and then at 6:30 we start the movie. We have 1 or 2 adults with 4 or 5 youth, de-pending on how many families have signed up for the night.

If this sounds like something you would like to take advantage of, just complete the registration on the back of this page and turn it into the church office. Please contact Kendra Ingle at 937-

707-8022 or email her at [email protected] with any questions.

In order to have the appropriate number of volunteers to watch the kids, and because space is limited, you MUST be signed up 48 hours BEFORE the night

of the event.

I am THANKFUL ………

This is a great time of year to focus our families on gratitude. When families are praying to the

Lord, it does not always need to be our wants or desires. We can teach our families to pray from

the heart our joys and praises. At the end of the day, teach them to search their heart for mo-

ments of gratitude in their day. This month leading up to Thanksgiving, teach your family to

take time to share their thoughts of thankfulness with each other. Here are some verses you

may want to read with them

“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” 1 Chronicles 16:34

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving

thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:1

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanks-

giving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6

A CHRISTMAS PAGEANT

Attention parents! Our church will be present-

ing a Christmas Pageant on Saturday, December 1,

2018 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the church Sanctu-

ary. We are seeking kids from 1st through 6th grade to

participate in the pageant. Please have family mem-

bers (grandparents especially) mark their calendars

for this date at Marysville F.U.M.C.

There will be minimal speaking parts as the story is being narrated and the children will be

acting it out. We will have both humans and animal parts in this pageant. Costumes will be

quite simple---we will need parents’ help in coming up with costumes and a few props for a sim-

ple set.

We will have two practices:

Practice #1 Sunday, November 18th at 11 a.m.-12 noon (in the

Choir room by Sunday School classrooms)

Practice #2 Wednesday, November 28th at 6:30 p.m.-7:45 (in

The Choir room and moving to the Sanctuary).

The Sunbeam Choir will be opening the program with two songs. They will NOT need to at-

tend the practice nights. They will learn the songs in Sunday School.

Please email me at [email protected] or text me at 614-580-0333 if your 1st – 6th grader

would like to participate. Please be sure your child can attend both practices and the pageant.

We are excited to share the beautiful Christmas story with our church and community!
