11. Robert Burns was born on January 25, 1909 [on the birthday of the great Scottish poet after whom he was named] in Campbellton and died in Brockville, Ontario in 2001 at the age of 92. Burns was raised and educated in Campbellton, but went to Westerly, Rhode Island for high school. He worked for a few years in Boston, then returned to Canada in w932 to join the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). When Burns was courting Ruth they went to the Restigouche River on a fishing trip in 1938. Picture shown on left. When Burns was 30 he married Ruth Emma Perkins [born April 23, 1912 in Stanstead, PQ and died in Toronto in 2006. Ruth was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Perkins of Stanstead, PQ] on June 14, 1939. Her engagement picture is shown on the right. They lived for most of their married life in Town of Mt. Royal where they had their three children, who all live in Toronto: Anthony Daniel, Nita Leslie, Mary Susan Burns served with the Mounties for 25 years and then after retirement became Director of Public Safety [police, fire and civil protection] at Montreal West. He served in this capacity for 17 years making a total of 42 years of serving in police work. After retirement, Ruth and Burns made their home in Brockville, Ontario. It was during that period that Burns recorded 5 hours of his early memories of the Campbellton area and family life. These tapes have been invaluable in adding a human interest touch to this memoir of his large family. Burns obituary has more about his life and is to be found on Page 2.
