Build BackgroundUse children’s knowledge of pets to build interest, using a question such as the following: What kinds of things do pets need to keep them healthy and happy? Discuss the title, making sure that children understand what the command means and talk about the cover. Ask children to point out details on the cover that suggest this story is humorous fi ction.

Front-Load Vocabulary Some everyday words may be unfamiliar to English learners. Before reading, check understanding of the following words: chewed, bone, string, bowl, wheel, wag, pat, okay.

Introduce the TextGuide students through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Call their attention to any important labels. Here are some suggestions:

Page 2: Explain that this story is about family pets who feel neglected by their busy owners. Call attention to the labels on the illustration, and use them to identify the animal characters.Suggested language: The labels can help you identify the pets in the picture on page 2. There is a dog, a fi sh, a hamster, a cat, and a bird. Their owners rush out of the house to go to work every morning without looking at their pets.

Page 3: Direct attention to the illustration, and read the word whisper to children. The animals are furious at the Smiths, their owners. They’ve gathered together in a group to come up with a plan. Why might pets be angry with their owners?

Pages 4–5: Point out the Smiths in the illustration. These people are the pets’ owners, Sam and Carol Smith. They’re always impatient when they have to deal with their pets. What can you tell about the Smiths from the picture? Why might they feel that they have no time to deal with their pets?

Now turn back to the beginning of the story and read to fi nd out how the pets fi gure out a solution to their problem.

Choices for Further Support• Fluency Invite children to pick an extended passage from pp. 3–10 to do as a Readers

Theater, with different children saying the words of the pets; two children speaking together as the Smiths; and another acting as narrator for the non-dialogue text. Remind them that this story is humorous, so they should make their voices sound funny.

• Comprehension Based on your observations of the children’s reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind children to go back to the text to support their ideas.

• Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Have children practice taking apart and making words with two or three syllables. Examples: an-i-mals, un-hap-py, de-mand, im-pa-tient, scoot-er.

In Sam and Carol Smith’s house, the

animals were busy. The dog chewed on a bone.

The cat played with some string. The fish

swam in its bowl. The bird sang a song. The

hamster ran on its wheel.

But the Smiths did not look at the animals.
