TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD
August 2, 2020 Church of Saint Theresa, North Reading Page 3
From the Pastor
Summer Series on Parts of the Mass, #5, “In persona Chris , capi s” Peace be with you. When the priest is holding the host at the altar and says, “...FOR THIS IS MY BODY...” and holds the Chalice and says “...FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD...” who is speaking? Does that sound like a strange ques on? Is not the answer right in the premise, i.e. do I not say “When the priest...says?” In fact, it is not the priest but Jesus who speaks the words of consecra on using the voice and ac ons of the priest. Meaning, the Eucharis c Ac on of the Last Supper happens over and over at each and every Mass and the bread and wine truly become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. This is the concept known as “in persona Chris capi s” which translates to “In the person of Christ the head”. The sacrifice at the altar is offered by everyone, with the priest as “the head” who stands in the place of Jesus and Jesus speaks through the priest. Saint Augus ne first explained this best when he wrote against the heresy known as “Dona sm”. The dona sts claimed that the Sacraments’ validity depended on the sanc ty of the priest. So, if the priest was pure and clean, the Bap sm would be effec ve but if he wasn’t, the Bap sm would not take. In the same way, the priest offering at the altar would be affected by his moral state. Saint Augus ne argued that the moral state of the priest was not the factor, but rather, the fact that the priest was ordained and anointed and does the proper ac ons are the prerequisites. This concept is known as “ex opere operato” which translates to “from the work performed”. Meaning, it is the ac on of the ordained priest that is Sacramental, and it doesn’t depend on the morality of the priest. As a priest, this understanding brings great comfort, as I know that what I do depends on God and not me. For me this is humbling, to stand in the place of Jesus Christ at the altar and have Jesus use my ac ons and my voice to bring about His Body and His Blood for all of us to receive. Some mes at Mass I look into the Chalice during the words of Consecra on and I see my own reflec on. I am reminded when that happens that Jesus Christ uses me and speaks through me using my voice and I am profoundly humbled. At other mes, when I am red or distracted, I can doubt myself and accuse myself during Mass, “Did I just do this reverently enough” or “Did I rush through it?” Wouldn’t it be awful, if it depended on me with my weaknesses and distrac ons? Rather, Jesus uses me and all priests even in our sinfulness to bring His Body and Blood to the People of God.” Have you ever heard the voice of Jesus? Yes, he sounds like me, and Fr. Reilly and the voices of all the priests. Blessings on you and your families, Bishop Mark

Mass Intentions
Voca on Crucifix is a special crucifix that travels from family to family to inspire prayers for voca ons to the Priesthood and to the Religious Life.
We have suspended the ministry for the me being. We ask everyone to please pray for voca ons to the Priesthood and to the Religious Life.
We have provided a prayer below.
Prayer for Voca ons to the Priesthood
Lord Jesus Christ, you share your saving work with all your brothers and sisters by their bap smal consecra on. But you call some to be ordained priests or deacons to make you visible in a special way, to proclaim your Good News, to celebrate your saving love in the Eucharist and other sacraments, to lead and encourage your people in their pilgrimage to the Kingdom. May you awaken a generous response in the hearts of those whom you are calling to this work, for the building up of your Church. May parents teach their children the need and responsibility of this voca on. Amen
Please pray for the repose of the souls of all our deceased relatives, friends,
and parishioners
Volunteers Needed We could use a few more volunteers to run the live-stream camera. It is a user-friendly system is run through an app on an iPad.
We especially need volunteers at the 9 & 11 AM Masses Contact Mary Ann Thomas if you are interested in helping:

RESPECT LIFE “Mary treasured all these things
and reflected on them in her heart.” Luke 2:19
The Rosary has conquered countless enemies and many pray it in front of
abor on mills. As we acknowledge Jesus as the fruit of Mary’s womb, we stand to pray with our brothers and sisters in the womb. As we honor the greatest mother we pray for all frightened mothers.
As we slowly return to normalcy at Mass, we are asking parishioners to pray the Rosary from home for the sanc ty of Human Life, from concep on to natural death. Our Blessed Mother Mary has said that the one true weapon against all evil, especially abor on, is the Rosary.
Thank you for your prayers.
18th Sunday in Ordinary Time
During this past winter, an unemployed mom ran out of hea ng oil and had no way of paying for more. She and her children were struggling to stay warm and huddled around a toaster for heat. The house was so cold that drops of water in the kitchen sink were turning into ice. One day, a truck showed up and delivered enough oil to heat the house for a month, all due to the kindness of a neighbor who had heard of their plight and decided to do something for them. It was a huge relief for her that not only chased the cold out, but also gave her a sense of hope for the future.
God provides for all our needs and some mes we are the providers. It is easy to write a check for the hungry children in Africa, but so much more difficult to volunteer at the local soup kitchen, or make a dinner for an elderly neighbor or invite someone in need to your home. Jesus did not send the crowd to someone else for food; He sent the Apostles and He sends us. Help someone who needs food, or clothes or warmth. Meet more than their physical needs; give them hope!

Plans for Fall/Spring Faith Forma on Classes
Due to the pandemic, we are changing the schedule of some of our Fall/Spring classes for grades 1 – 8. We’ve reviewed the guidelines from the archdiocese, and we are happy to be able to offer families the
op on of online classes or on-site classes (following safety guidelines) for our grades 1 – 8 students.
The biggest change for this fall is that our on-site classes for grades 1, 3 – 5 will be offered under a Family program model. Parents who choose the Family program will a end a single session with all students in this age-range and will use a curriculum designed for this Family approach. This model has the benefit of parents coming to the parish for one session instead of bringing students to mul ple classes at different mes during the week. Addi onally, classes will only be mee ng twice/month, so this should simplify family schedules during these unse led mes. This approach also allows en re families to get to know one another, which will strengthen our Catholic community of young learners. This program has also been designed such that if the pandemic worsens, we will be able to offer the sessions in an online format.
Full descrip ons of the program and offerings for each grade are on our grades 1 – 8 website (which is linked on the main parish page, or direct link here: h ps://reedugrades1thru8.weebly.com/)
Please email the director (Brenda Terranova) at grades1-5@s heresanreading.org or grades6-8@s heresanreading.org if you have any thoughts, ques ons, or concerns about the fall classes. Know that you and your family are in our prayers!
