The Lord’s Prayer6th Petition: And lead us not into temptation.

Chain the Catechism: A topical study through the Lutheran confessions

Memorization Verses: And lead us not into temptation. What does this mean? God tempts no one. We pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us so that the devil, the world, and our sinful nature may not deceive us or mislead us into false belief, despair, and other great shame and vice. Although we are attacked by these things, we pray that we may finally overcome them and win the victory.

Look up Ephesians 6:10-18Draw your own.

Page 4: 11.11.04 the lord's prayer 6th petition-and lead us not into temptation

We have now heard enough what toil and labor is required to retain all that for which we pray, and to persevere therein, which, however, is not achieved without infirmities and stumbling. Besides, although we have received forgiveness and a good conscience and are entirely acquitted, yet is our life of such a nature that one stands to-day and to-morrow falls. Therefore, even though we be godly now and stand before God with a good conscience, we must pray again that He would not suffer us to relapse and yield to trials and temptations.

Temptation, however, or (as our Saxons in olden times used to call it) Bekoerunge, is of three kinds, namely, of the flesh, of the world and of the devil. For in the flesh we dwell and

carry the old Adam about our neck, who exerts himself and incites us daily to inchastity, laziness, gluttony and drunkenness, avarice and deception, to defraud our neighbor and to overcharge him, and, in short, to all manner of evil lusts which cleave to us by nature, and to which we are incited by the society, example and what we hear and see of other people, which often wound and inflame even an innocent heart.

From Luther’s Large Cat.: And lead us not into temptation. .“1/4

Page 5: 11.11.04 the lord's prayer 6th petition-and lead us not into temptation

Next comes the world, which offends us in word and deed, and impels us to anger and impatience. In short, there is nothing but hatred and envy, enmity, violence and wrong, unfaithfulness, vengeance, cursing, raillery slander, pride and haughtiness, with superfluous finery, honor, fame, and power, where no one is willing to be the least, but every one desires to sit at the head and to be seen before all.

Then comes the devil, inciting and provoking in all directions, but especially agitating matters that concern the conscience and spiritual affairs, namely, to induce us to despise and disregard both the Word and works of God to tear us away from faith, hope, and love and bring us into misbelief,

false security, and obduracy, or, on the other hand, to despair, denial of God, blasphemy, and innumerable other shocking things. These are indeed snares and nets, yea, real fiery darts which are shot most venomously into the heart, not by flesh and blood, but by the devil.

Great and grievous, indeed, are these dangers and temptations which every Christian must bear, even though each one were alone by himself, so that every hour that we are in this vile life where we are attacked on all sides, chased and hunted down, we are moved to cry out and to pray that God would not suffer us to become weary and faint and to relapse into sin, shame, and unbelief. For otherwise it is impossible to overcome even the least temptation.

From Luther’s Large Cat.: And lead us not into temptation. .“2/4

Page 6: 11.11.04 the lord's prayer 6th petition-and lead us not into temptation

This, then, is leading us not into temptation, to wit, when He gives us power and strength to resist, the temptation, however, not being taken away or removed. For while we live in the flesh and have the devil about us, no one can escape temptation and allurements; and it cannot be otherwise than that we must endure trials, yea, be engulfed in them; but we pray for this, that we may not fall and be drowned in them.

To feel temptation is therefore a far different thing from consenting or yielding to it. We must all feel it, although not all in the same manner, but some in a greater degree and more severely than others; as, the young suffer especially from the flesh, afterwards, they that attain to middle life and old

age, from the world, but others who are occupied with spiritual matters, that is, strong Christians, from the devil. But such feeling, as long as it is against our will and we would rather be rid of it, can harm no one. For if we did not feel it, it could not be called a temptation. But to consent thereto is when we give it the reins and do not resist or pray against it.

From Luther’s Large Cat.: And lead us not into temptation. .“3/4

Page 7: 11.11.04 the lord's prayer 6th petition-and lead us not into temptation

Therefore we Christians must be armed and daily expect to be incessantly attacked, in order that no one may go on in security and heedlessly, as though the devil were far from us, but at all times expect and parry his blows. For though I am now chaste, patient, kind, and in firm faith, the devil will this very hour send such an arrow into my heart that I can scarcely stand. For he is an enemy that never desists nor becomes tired, so that when one temptation ceases, there always arise others and fresh ones.

Accordingly, there is no help or comfort except to run hither and to take hold of the Lord's Prayer, and thus speak to God from the heart: Dear Father, Thou hast bidden me pray; let me not relapse because of temptations. Then you will

see that they must desist, and finally acknowledge themselves conquered. Else if you venture to help yourself by your own thoughts and counsel, you will only make the matter worse and give the devil more space. For he has a serpent's head, which if it gain an opening into which he can slip, the whole body will follow without check. But prayer can prevent him and drive him back.

From Luther’s Large Cat.: And lead us not into temptation. .“4/4

Prayer Prep: “And lead us not into temptation,…” When tempted, no one should say,

“God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. James 1:13-15

God promises to provide His grace and strength to resist temptation.

Read Hebrews 2:18 Read Hebrews 4:15-16 Run to the throne of grace by calling

out to God to help you when you are tempted.

Grace is God-given miraculous ability and provision, God’s good will and

favor, kindness, mercy, pardon, and love. It is the influence of God operating in people to strengthen and improve. You need it.

God promises a way of escape from temptation. So, take it!

Read 1 Corinthians 10:13. Take one of God’s ways of escape:

call a friend who will help you keep from sinning.

Lead us not into temptation…

PRAYER Psalm 141 A psalm of David. 1 O LORD, I am calling to you. Please hurry! Listen when I cry to you for help! 2 Accept my prayer as incense offered to you, and my upraised hands as an evening offering. 3 Take control of what I say, O LORD, and guard my lips. 4 Don’t let me drift toward evil or take part in acts of wickedness. Don’t let me share in the delicacies of those who do wrong. 5 Let the godly strike me! It will be a kindness! If they correct me, it is soothing medicine. Don’t let me refuse it. But I pray constantly against the wicked and their deeds. 6 When their leaders are thrown down from a cliff, the wicked will listen to my words and find them true. 7 Like rocks brought up by a plow, the bones of the wicked will lie scattered without burial.[a]

8 I look to you for help, O Sovereign LORD. You are my refuge; don’t them kill me. 9 Keep me from the traps they have set for me, from the snares of those who do wrong. 10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets, but let me escape.

LP 6th Petition, Temptation: DiscussionWhat would things look like if Satan

really took control of a city? if Satan took over Philadelphia, all of the bars would be closed, pornography banished, and pristine streets would be filled with tidy pedestrians who smiled at each other. There would be no swearing. The children would say, “Yes, sir” and “No, ma’am,” and the churches would be full every Sunday . . . where Christ is not preached.Donald Grey Barnhouse

How might our focus regarding “sin” and “temptation” be misdirected?

Page 14: 11.11.04 the lord's prayer 6th petition-and lead us not into temptation

LP 6th Petition, Temptation: Discussion As God’s first children on earth, Adam and Eve were living in their garden paradise. They

didn’t feel any sorrow or pain, which might seem nice, except that without it, they also couldn’t feel joy. They didn’t remember their pre-earth life. If they hadn’t eaten the forbidden fruit, they would have lived like that forever and never had children. Mankind never would have been born or the world populated.

As we know, Adam and Eve succumbed to Satan’s temptations to eat the fruit and disobeyed God who had commanded them not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. As a consequence, they were separated from God’s presence physically and spiritually—an event we refer to as the Fall. They became mortal—just as we are—subject to sin, disease, all types of suffering, and ultimately death. But it wasn’t all bad because they could now feel great joy.“Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.” (2 Nephi 2:25) But as they were obedient to the Gospel of Jesus Christ Adam and Eve were able to receive God’s inspiration, revelation, and even visits from heavenly messengers.

Once out of the garden, they were able to progress and learn to become more like our Heavenly Father. In addition, they could have children, which meant the rest of God’s spirit children (all of us) could come to Earth, experience physical bodies, and be proven by our daily choices. Just like Adam and Eve, there are consequences to all our choices, good or bad. Lasting happiness and progression come from choosing to do what God wants us to do. The key word is “choosing.” Generally God does not step in and prevent us from making the poor choices Satan tempts us to make. He will, however, offer his love, divine guidance, and warnings when we open our heart to Him.

1. Bring/Lead: juxtaposed to being drawn out (4. Rhoumai). God is sovriegn to both lead into, and to draw out.

2. Temptation/Trial: testing of fidelity so as to take pleasure in a lapse of faith (Greek), to melt and dissolve as through fire and to scorn God by yeilding to dispair (Hands of Massah, Hebrew)

LP 6th Petition, Temptation: Historical Context

Pharisaical “Temptation”Creating in/out groups through different

vocations, races and ailments.Temptation=sin fallacy

Making sin a part of one’s physical condition (ailments) and leaving them in uncleanness

Being solicited to sin is not the same as actually sinning. Christ was tempted in this way.

God’s sovreign decreeGod is in control of who is and who is

not tempted, the extent, and whether or not they give into the « the hands of massah » (Pharoah)

Page 20: 11.11.04 the lord's prayer 6th petition-and lead us not into temptation

What do tempt and temptation mean in the Scriptures? In the Scriptures these words have two meanings:

A. The testing of our faith, which God uses to bring us closer to Himself.

John 6:5-6 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward Him, He said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?" He asked this only to test him, for He already had in mind what He was going to do.

James 1:2-3 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.

 Bible narratives: The Lord tested

Abraham by commanding him to sacrifice Isaac (Gen. 22:1-19). Jesus tested the faith of the Canaanite woman (Matt. 15:2128).

M testing of our faith

Page 21: 11.11.04 the lord's prayer 6th petition-and lead us not into temptation

LP 6th Petition, Temptation: Kingdom Analogy

The King is a leaderHe makes decisions based on the

welfare of His kingdom. Shields His kingdom from the

overpowering influences from the world, from the enemy, and from ourselves.

Has an open court to appeal to his unending benevolence and grace

The King is a warriorHe leads, as though in battle, as the

head of sabaoth against the foe.The banner of Christ is at the forefront,

we cannot be taken into despair because He has defeated grief, temptation, despair and death for us on the Cross.

Page 22: 11.11.04 the lord's prayer 6th petition-and lead us not into temptation

B. The attempts of our spiritual enemies to lure us away from God and His ways.

Mark 14:38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.

James 1:13-14 When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.

• Pray: We are weak and sick, O Father, and

the temptations of the flesh and the world are great and many. O Father, keep us, and let us not fall again into temptation and sin. Give us grace that we may remain steadfast and fight bravely to our end. Without Your grace and help we can do nothing. Amen. (Luther).

LP 6th Petition, Temptation: TrinityThe Father has set the standard

for perfection, seeks to lead us in the path of righteousness.

The Son is our brother and savior, who is also our keeper and protector. Where Adam, Cain, and all

others failed, he was successful. The Holy Spirit is the enabler,

the armor, the words of confession on our lips, the strength of our prayers, and the enabler of good deeds.

Page 24: 11.11.04 the lord's prayer 6th petition-and lead us not into temptation

Into what kinds of evil do our spiritual enemies try to mislead us?  The devil, the world, and our sinful nature try to mislead us into false belief, despair, and other great sins.

1 Peter 5:8-9 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

Prov. 1:10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.

Matt. 18:7 Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!

Gal. 5:17 The sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature.

2 Cor. 4:8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair.

Bible narratives: The devil tempted Eve to doubt and disobey God (Genesis 3). The devil tempted Judas to betray Christ (John 13:2) and to despair (Matt. 27:4-5). Among enemies of Christ, Peter denied his Savior (Luke 22:54-60). King David's sinful nature tempted him to commit adultery and murder (2 Sam. 12:9).

• Pray: Lead us not into temptation, but

help us by Your Spirit to subdue the flesh, to despise the world and its ways, and to overcome the devil with all his malice. Amen. (Luther).

W: mislead us

LP 6th Petition, Temptation: Christian ActionGod’s action: Lead us into paths of righteousness (Ps.

1, 23)Our actions: producing fruits of the Spirit in keeping

with our divine calling. We are on the path, we walk straight to keep from

sliding/straying back. Not begrudging our service to others, as we live in a

communal kingdom. Fruits of the Spirit make little time for overwhelming

grief in trial, sin, or sickness. Our vocation: We labor in a world that presents

temptations every moment. Our discernment in siezing the opportunity to spite the

devil and our own sinful nature is fulfilling. Our repsonsibilities can also be burdens and trials,

ones where God’s name may be glorified in ways only His sovriegn will understands

Page 26: 11.11.04 the lord's prayer 6th petition-and lead us not into temptation

What do we ask God to do for us when we pray this petition? We ask our Father in heaven to give us strength to resist and overcome temptations.

Luke 22:31-32 Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail.

Rom. 13:14 Clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.

1 Cor. 10:12-13 If you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Eph. 6:11, 17 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. Take the helmet of salvation

and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Bible narratives: Joseph withstood the temptation of Potiphar's wife (Gen. 39:1-20). Jesus was tempted by Satan and won the victory for us (Matt. 4:1-11).

• Pray: No military eagles lead the caravan

of our army, but Your name, Lord Jesus, and Your worship. Show forth now a plain sign of Your majesty. Then may the person who believes You are the true Lord of hosts, and Captain of the armies of heaven, the one who believes that You are the true power and wisdom of God—not a being of time nor creation, but even as it is written, the eternal power and divinity of God—may that person, upheld by the aid of Your might supreme, win the prize of victory of his faith. Amen. (Ambrose of Milan, c. 339-97)

Th strength to resist

Page 27: 11.11.04 the lord's prayer 6th petition-and lead us not into temptation

LP 6th Petition, Temptation: ConclusionA silly idea is current that good

people do not know what temptation means. This is an obvious lie. Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is.... A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. That is why bad people, in one sense, know very little about badness. They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in.”

LSB 773Hear us, Father, when we pray, through

Your Son and in Your Spirit. By Your Spirit's Word convey all that we through Christ inherit, that as baptized heirs we may truly pray.

When we know not what to say and our wounded souls are pleading, my Your Spirit, night and day, groan within us interceding; by His sighs, too deep for words, we are heard.

Jesus, advocate on high, sacrificed on Calvry's altar, through Your priestly blood we cry: hear our prayers, though they may falter; place them on Your Father's throne as your own.

By Your Spirit now attend to our prayers and supplications, as like incense they ascend to Your heav'nly habitations. May their fragrance waft above, God of love.

Sing it!

Heb 4:15 For we have not a high priest that cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but one that hath been in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us therefore draw near with boldness unto the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace to help us in time of need.

ConclusionAnd lead us not into temptation. In the Scriptures these words have two meanings:A.The testing of our faith, which God uses to bring us closer to Himself.B. The attempts of our spiritual enemies to lure us away from God and His ways.

The devil, the world, and our sinful nature try to mislead us into false belief, despair, and other great sins.We ask our Father in heaven to give us strength to resist and overcome temptations.
