Homecoming at Camp Brosius in June
For the second consecutive year, with the intentions of making this event the best ever, the School of Physical Education (Normal College) Alumni Association will hold its Annual Homecoming Celebration at Camp Brosius in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. This is made possible through a generous offer by the Indiana University Alumni Association, who took over operation of Brosius in 1 9 7 5.
The homecoming will be held from June 24 to 28 and will follow the format of past Brosius homecomings. Participants may arrive anytime Wednesday with breakfast on Thursday being the first meal. Camp will break following breakfast on Sunday.
The facilities of the entire camp will be at our disposal , as well as many attractive activities in the Elkhart Lake area including golf , fishing, horseback riding, and tennis . Full services of the camp include food service , waterfront activities, children's programs and babysitting for the youngsters. Linen service is provided for those staying in cottages and Category I accomodations listed on page 8 . Costs for the Homecoming are at a considerable savings over the normal rates .
A deposit of $20 per person must accompany all reservations. Cancellations 30 days prior to the date of Homecoming will be fully refunded. The balance is due upon arrival at Bro-
sius. The discounted rates for those who decide to stay the entire week will be available upon request.
Phys.Ed. student cooks When Walter Trice '81 graduates this May,
he will have added a new dimension to his already diverse background. Having retired from the United States Postal Service, Walter is active in the National Association of Letter Carriers. Deciding that since his college career was about to draw to a close , he had better find a project to occupy his spare time. The project has been to edit the National Association of Letter Carrier's upcoming cookbook.
Recipes have been requested from those m embers attending last summer's national convention and Walter hopes to have the book for sale at the 1982 convention . The book is being used as a fund raiser for the association.
"The fun part has been the testing and seeing the difference in recipes from other parts of the United States. Some of the recipes from the West have been so different from the ones here in Indianapolis," he says.
He and his wife divide the cooking chores at home but he does most of the recipe testing fo r the book. 'Tm one of those people who' ll try anything." Following is just one of the many tested recipes that Walter has enjoyed.
YAM CUSTARD WITH PECAN TOPPING (makes six servings)
12/J cups light cream, divided 2 112 tablespoons butter or margarine,
divided 2 cups mashed yams 2 eggs, slightly beaten 314 cup granulated sugar 112 teaspoon salt 112 teaspoon ginger 112 teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon vanilla 113 cup firmly packed brown sugar VJ cup pecans Sweetened whipped cream optional Heat 1 cup cream with 1 tablespoon butter
over low heat. Combine warm cream and mashed yams in a blender; blend on low until page 2 .
smooth. · Blend ·in eggs, granulated sugar, salt, ginger, nutmeg, and vanilla. Add remaining cream.
Pour mixture into a 1112 quart baking dish. Put pan inside a larger pan filled with 1 inch of water. Bake in a 400-degree oven 50 minutes or until a knife inserted into the custard comes out clean. Remove from oven; remove from water; cool on wire rack.
Mix together the remaining 1112 tablespoons softened butter, brown sugar, and pecans; sprinkle over custard. Place under broiler about 5 inches from the heat, until the topping starts to bubble. Watch carefully that it does not burn. Serve with whipped cream.
Now wait a minute ... In the recent Marion County (Indianapolis)
gymnastics meet, Warren Central captured its first such team title with a narrow 95.6 to 95.0 victory over defending state champion Perry Meridian. North Central was a very close third at 94.8. The significance of this item is that all three teams are coached by our own graduates. Warren Central is coached by Louanne Baker Schwenn '77 while Perry Meridian is coached by Connie Beck '7 4 and North Central is coached by Teresa Gillespie Hoffman '73 .
Another interesting fact is that Coach Schwenn credits the Warren Central boys coach, Bob Hoffman, with being a big help. What makes this interesting is that Coach Bob Hoffman is married to North Central's coach Teresa Hoffman.
As the sectional approaches, Perry Meridian still appears to be the team to beat. Much compet ition will be provided by Warren Central and North Central and the members of this alumni association will have plenty to cheer about.
Scholarships The 1981 School of Physical Education
scholarships are in the process of being given, but to refresh your memory we would like to acknowledge those persons who received scholarships in the spring of 1980.

Alumni reports ... From George Geoghan:
Perhaps some of this is already known to you. John (Jack) Stocker Class of 1923 died during the month of December 1980 in Sacramento, California.
Ted Bednarcyk '24 and his wife, Gladys, were out in California recently. While in Sacramento they called Charlotte Lascari and talked to her on the phone. She misses Andy very much; Andy died August 27 , 1980.
Ted and Gladys visited Lou Montgomery '22 and his wife, Ruth, while in California. Both of them are in good health.
Bill McColgan '25 is fee ling quite well again after a short stay in the hospital for a complete check-up.
That is about all the news from WNY at this time.
From Doris Stewart (Billie Boettcher):
We're coming to Brosius for Homecoming! Here's our deposit.
Retired last June after 31 years at Indianapolis Public Schools and 10 for Indiana University-Bloomington. Have been busy on a Task Force to Select Schools to Close -what a job! Harry retires this June and we take to the road full-time in the travel trailer.
From George G. Kalbfleish:
I always enjoy reading the BULLETIN. In the Winter Bulletin 1981, Coach Garland says this might be the year of the first winning season ever for men's basketball. Let's go back, way back, to 191 7 and 1918 when we not only had a winning season, but we never lost a ball game. Of course, we played only the smaller colleges such as Indiana Dental College, Wabash and Culver Military Academy, and others.
From the 1917 team I remember Red Krueck, Whitey Schafer, Whipple, Freddie page 4
Spier and Bud Knothe as seniors, along with freshmen Chuck Smid!, Art Whalley and myself.
In 1918 the team members were Sonny Schmidt, Henry Smid!, Al Shafner, G. Dollins, Allie Seelbach (later coach at Canisius College in Buffalo), Chuck Smid!, Art Whalley and myself. Thought you might be interested.
From Walter Eberhardt ("Doc"):
Here are a few tongue-in-cheek St. Louis l ites.
Doc Eberhardt has a new Conditioning Exercise Record on the market - "Gel in Shape Like lhe Pros - With a Pro. "
Lou Kittlaus enjoying retirement , is busy making clocks, one for each of his children.
Mel Oppliger is starting on a musical career, taking accordion lessons.
Hank Stroer now breaks 100 in golf. Bob Marx is as busy as ever with Phi EK
business. Arnold Trummer - still number 1 man at
Concordia Turners, also teaches apparatus work at Washington University, St. Louis.
From Bobbie Larsen:
News of Alums balances out each year : Some of it is good, and some of it is sad . So here is my report for 1980 and January, 1981.
Dorothy Roth Applegate is enjoying her retirement. Her philosophy is "What isn 't done today may get done tomorrow."
Dottie Eck Bierley is overcoming her medical problem and is on the mend. Good news.
Busy Minna Pritzlaff Byrens wrote that Helen Schmitz Pritzlaff was in Maryland with her son and his family and would stay there until mid-March.
The Al Helms family had a large family reunion in Loveland, Colorado at Thanksgiving time.
. .
Alice Huth Krumbein had a 3-day diversion this fall, to Dillon, Colorado to see the aspen leaves turning gold.
Leah Braden Ketchum and Norm still play golf, ride their bikes, and play plenty of bridge and pinochle. They spend their summers in Loveland, Colorado and winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. Sounds like great retirement living!
Gretchen Stuart Osborn and husband spent six weeks in Europe last fall seeing Sweden, Germany, Switzerland and Austria .
Clarence Porter and Julia reported a pretty good year and intended to spend Christmas with son, John, at Deer Lodge.
Evelyn Romeiser and Benji (her dog) sent Christmas greetings.
Helen Humphrey Scott and Jim had a Hawaiian trip. Later they enjoyed a cruise on the Mississippi Queen.
Busy Lanky Schueler was wishing for snow for Christmas! We were wishing for a heat wave while we were at Elkhart during Homecoming!
Vera Ulbrecht wrote that "Te" Pletz now has her home up for sale since Slim has passed on. She will move back to St. Louis.
Like many Alums, Vera questioned my saying "1982 will be our 60th anniversary." She was in the class of '22 and I was in the class of '24. Because there were so many different years of graduation for 2, 3, and 4-year students, the School decided to call all classes now according to the year of enroll· ment instead of graduation. So - Class of '24 that was, plan on our class reunion in 1982. We had 28 back on our 50th - try to equal that in '82. (So far, only 20 classmates have gone on.)
Hattie Hettich Vossel said she was leading a hectic life with her Womens' Club, bridge, programs, lectures, etc. She will definitely try to attend our '82 Reunion.
Martha Wigal Walsh is recovering from cataract surgery.
Dorothea and Adolph Winter are visiting their daughter, Lois, who works in the Arcadia National Park, in January. Dorothea
was with her in October, also. Both will attend Homecoming at Brosius in 1981.
When Vi Winterhoff Wirth wrote, they were looking for their niece to return to Hawaii for the holidays.
Carolyn Wasserman entertained the Psi Kaps at Christmas. Among those present were Helen Pritzlaff and Hattie Hettich Vossel. Carolyn and her sister visited Ireland and Germany earlier.
As you might have heard I, too, attended Homecoming in '80. Sorry to say that I was the only one there from our class. Regardless, I had a good time and it wasn't long before everyone was talking to everyone. There are no strangers at Homecoming.
Additional greetings came from Margareth Greiner Kling, Bob C.olwell, Ding and George Jacquin, Margherite Lobraico Lavieri, Louise Feucht, Lola and Henry Lohse, Fred and Dottie Martin, Betty Goudie Hackett, Lib and Wally Hente, and Parker and Laura Bel French. Next time please include news for the BULLET!/'/.
(Ed. note: A special Lhanks lo Helen Straub for compiling the information contained in this alumni report section.)
Correction ... (Ed. Note: An error was made in the Bu{f alo Alumni re
port in the last issue of the Alumni Bulletin. Following is the way il should have read.)
Bill Naab ('32-'35) and his wife, Grace, traveled in from their summer home (really an estate of 200 acres) in Cattaraugus, New York. Bill still teaches on a part-time basis in the Amherst Senior Citizens Center and spends the winter in Clearwater, Ftorida.
Carl Heinrich ('32-'35) and wife, Myrnie, were on deck early because Carl had to leave early to participate as a crewman in a two-day sailing race in Lake Ontario. An interesting note was the Gymnast yearbook from 1916 that Carl brought along. It was his late father, Richard's, and Carl was pictured in the year· book as a young mascot at Normal.
page 5
Just a note ... Dear Jeff,
Sorry to be so tardy, but we've had a few problems at this end. I was sent to the hospi tal for tests to see whether I had an abdominal aorta aneurysm. The test came back negative, but the hospital won - the bill should be coming soon. Then a friend of ours was hospitalized for a series of tests and Marg and I had to take ca~e of her house, yard, etc.
The following graduates, their spouses and some faculty from IUPUI and Bloomington stopped by to see what the attraction was for the Lohses and the Schreibers here in Port Charlotte.
From the IUPUI faculty we had Mary and Dave Kimball ; Sue and Dick Barrett and Betty and Jack Buhner. From the Bloomington campus we had Ruth and John Brogneaux.
Former students and retired Normal Col lege graduates with their spouses included Ruby Lou Hoff, Hannah and Joe Goldenberg, Vickie and Rudie Memmel, and last but certainly not least was the legendary Bill (Red) Pump.
Dean Kellum was down during the Christmas holidays with the Kellum family. He and Rudy Schreiber took a trip to Melbourne, Florida to visit with Bill Mueller, former director of physical education in the Philadelphia Public Schools and one of the founders of Phi Epsilon Kappa Fraternity.
Saw Bill Treichler of the Class of 1934 in Naples, Florida. He is well and busy donating his services to the Naples Hospital.
You might indicate in the Bulletin that Pete John, who attended the college in 1940-41, died of a heart attack in January. He was president of Advertising Letter Service in Indianapolis and was involved in supporting gymnastics in the city and the state.
Matt was graduated from Florida State University and is teaching physical education and coaching basketball at Fletcher High School in Jacksonville, Florida. He was also coach of the girls' cross country team. They went to the State finals and placed 13th -not bad for a novice who couldn't even spell cross country. page 6
Say hello to anyone who remembers me and a special hello to Sue. I'll be driving my VW Rabbit Diesel provided I get it back from the body shop in time. Was hit by a woman who failed to stop at a stop sign - cost the State Farm $2500.00 for body work and five weeks rental of a car.
