Attending a function to mark the World Human Rights Day at the Cal- cutta High Court on Tuesday evening, Ganguly, in his speech, cited Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Man- dela and said like them he too would carry forward his struggle for the protection of human rights. Ganguly, indicted by a three-mem- ber panel of Supreme Court judges for allegedly sexually harassing a fe- male law intern, spoke at length about the necessity of human rights bodies and the related provisions in the Constitution. He earlier remarked: "I will not re- sign. Please do not disturb me." Somnath Chatterjee, who was guest of honour at the function, stood by his former lawyer friend and said he did not believe the charges against CONTD. Barack Obama paid tribute to anti-apartheid icon, saying: ''We will never see the likes of Nelson Mandela again.'' Then, taking a cue from Mandela, who was known as father of forgiveness, Obama shook hands with Cuba's Raul Castro on his way to the podium. It was a historic gesture of reconciliation, which shows that the two presidents are ready to improve ties between their countries. Cuba and the U.S. were extremely close for decades, before an army led by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara overthrew the government of the island nation in 1959. After Fidel resigned as president in 2008 due to ill health, there were hopes that his brother Raul might prove less hostile to the US, but relations do not seem to have thawed until today. FPJ NEWS SERVICE New Delhi The Supreme Court on Tues- day ruled that only persons holding constitutional posts could use the read beacon, which gives them the right of the way on the road. Constitutional authorities include the President, Prime Minister, cabinet ministers, governors, the Chief Justice of India, Supreme Court judges and the heads of both houses of Parliament. The court has further di- rected the government to come out within three months a fresh list of consti- tutional authorities. Which are entitled to use the beacon. This will prevent its misuse by local politicians, who flaunt it as a status symbol. The bench also said barred state governments from en- larging the list of VIPs eligi- ble for red beacon. It also said that ambulances, police and emergency services could use the blue beacon. The court also put a restric- tion on multi-tune horns say- ing they be removed from all vehicles, including heavy ve- hicles. The bench has directed all states and Central govern- ment to bring in a law on this in a month's time. Welcoming the ruling, Jam- mu and Kashmir Chief Min- ister Omar Abdullah tweeted after the court directive, "It's amazing how some people are married to this symbol of power. If the PM doesn't need a red beacon, why should anyone else? I look forward to instructing my people to remove red beacons from my official vehicles also now. " The court had earlier called CONTD. At least four MPs from Ma- harashtra -- Mukul Wasnik from Ramtek, and the three Mumbai MPs -- Sanjay Niru- pam, Priya Dutt and Guru- das Kamat have major orga- nizational responsibilities and they would like some im- mediate clarity on this issue. Other leaders like Digvi- jaya Singh from Madhya Pradesh, C P Joshi from Ra- jasthan and Shakeel Ahmad from Bihar, who are current- ly general secretaries in charge for several states, also have plans to contest Lok Sabha elections from their constituencies, and would also need similar clarity. The issue assumes signifi- cance as at the Jaipur brain- storming session that marked the Congress vice- president Rahul Gandhi's debut earlier this year there was a strong suggestion that persons holding the posts of the state unit presidents and general secretaries should CONTD. ON P2 FROM OUR DELHI BUREAU New Delhi The recent election success story -- the Aam Aadmi Party -- seems to be enjoying the current wooing season, but showing no signs of any haste to fall into the arms of either the semi-winner Bharatiya Janata Party or the complete loser Congress. But there is no dearth of ad- vice. Congress general secre- tary Digvijay Singh has sug- gested to the AAP that it should join hands with the BJP to form the government with a common agenda. He picked up this suggestion from retired IPS officer Kiran Bedi, who was also a member of Team Anna at the time of the Lokpal agitation that formed the genesis of AAP. "Both the AAP and the BJP have the mandate," Bedi had observed. On the other end, the Con- gress general secretary in- charge for Delhi affairs, Sha- keel Ahmed, has offered to support AAP unconditional- ly. But so far, AAP founder Arvind Kejriwal has main- tained that the party would neither ''offer nor take'' sup- port from both the parties. Though the delay in gov- ernment formation has not been excessive, both the AAP and the BJP are begin- ning to feel that instead of going into a government with built in instability, a fresh round of elections within the next six months, along with the general elec- tions, could be an option.
