He’s sharing a handful of dates with Alison Krauss & Union Station before hitting the highway with Old Crow Medicine Show. Nelson is slated to receive the Library of Congress’ Gershwin Prize for Popular Song on November 18 at the DAR Constitution Hall in Wash- ington D.C. Nelson is the Eighth musician to be honored this way. The program will be televised on PBS stations on January 15, and informa- tion received is that it will include performances by Rosanne Cash, Jamey Johnson, Alison Krauss, The Mavericks’ Raul Malo, Paul Simon, Neil Young, and Nelson. The Gershwin Prize is named after broth- ers George and Ira Gershwin, who teamed up during the 20th century to pen some of America’s most en- during standards. Nelson, who sang the Gershwin staple “Someone to Watch Over Me” on his 1978 covers album, Stardust, has left a similar mark on American music. With nearly 70 studios albums under his belt, he’s become a rare figure in country music. “It is an honor to be the next recipient of the Gershwin Prize. I appreciate it greatly,” he said in a brief statement. Prior to Nelson’s show at Billy Bob’s Texas, on November 8, the iconic venue is hosting a “Back The Badge Benefit,” with Jacob Furr, Grady Spencer, and the Keith Mitchell Band playing. Events TEXAS WAS WELL REPRESENTED at the 49th annual Country Music Association awards this week. A big ol’ Texas congratulations to Texan Miranda Lambert for taking the top honor as the CMA’s Female Vocalist of the Year for 2015. Two other Texans, Lee Ann Womack and Kacey Musgraves, were also nominated along with Oklahoma’s Carrie Underwood and Tennessean Kelsea Ballerini. Musgraves also received a nomination for her CD Pageant Ma- terial, being beat out on that top honor by Americana songwriter Chris Stapleton. Lambert, Womack, and Musgraves are all from East Texas. Also, congratulations to Texas’ own Willie Nelson and his recording buddy Merle Haggard for being nominated as CMA’s “Musical Event of the Year” for their recording of Django and Jimmie. Shiner Rising Star, the KHYI and Shiner Beer-sponsored band contest now in its 11th year, will hold its final throwdown on November12, at Love & War in Texas’ Plano location. KHYI, upon careful consideration of several factors, invited Rhythm & Beards as a Wildcard band for the finals, after the Matt Nix Band beat them out in Round 2 by a slim mar- gin. Vying for the top prizes, includ- ing a recording contract with Shiner Records, are the Whiskey Prophets, the Darrell Goldman band, the Matt Nix band, Rhythm & Beards, and the Big Joe Walker band. . . . . . . . . . KHYI is also holding its yearly Canvas for Kids Charity Auction, with original artwork created by na- tional and regional music artists. These are auctioned off online at KHYI.com and kicks off November 27. The list of artists helping this eleventh annual event hasn’t yet been released. This year’s benefit will aid Sons of the Flag, a non-profit organi- zation aiding burn victims, and more specifically their Water Brigade pro- gram assisting child burn victims. And speaking of contests, it’s also kick-off time this year’s Love & War in Texas’ sponsored Rusty Wier singer/songwriter contest. Try-outs are being held at 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday night through December 1 at the L&W Plano location. The con- test then moves onto Sundays when the first round begins December 13 and runs through the finals on Feb- ruary 28, taking off February 7 (Su- per Bowl Sunday).
