HIGH SPEED DIGITAL SIGNALS

As clock speeds increase to 1 Gbps (Billion bits per second) and beyond it falls into the digital high speed area. Signal integrity becomes a concern at these speeds with Impedance Matching, Cross Talk, Noise, and loss in the Interconnect system.

USB 3.0 is the third major release of the Universal Serial Bus standard for computer connectivity. The changes in this specification make improvements in the following areas:

Transfer Speed – added a new transfer type called Super Speed or SS – 4.8Gb/s (electrically it is more similar to PCIe Gen2 than USB 2.0)

More Bandwidth – instead of one-way communication, USB 3.0 uses two unidirectional data paths: one to receive data and the other to transmit.

Power Management – U0 through U3 link power management states are defined.

Improved Bus Utilization – a new feature is added (using packets NRDY and ERDY) to let a device asynchronously notify the host of its readiness (no need of polling)

Support to Rotating Media – Bulk protocol is updated with a new feature called Stream Protocol that allows a large number of logical streams within an Endpoint.

USB 3.0 has transmission speeds of up to 4.8 Gbit/s, which is 10 times faster than USB 2.0 (480 Mbit/s).

HDMI

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a compact audio/video interface for transferring uncompressed digital audio/video data from a HDMI-compliant device ("the source" or "input") to a compatible digital audio device, computer monitor, video projector, and digital television. An HDMI cable is usually composed of four shielded twisted pairs, with impedance of the order of 100 ohms, plus several separate conductors. Each data line pair (3 pair each) is capable of transmitting at 3.4 Gbps using special data compression techniques. This parallel data technique produces a 10.2 Gpbs stream.

SATA is a computer bus interface for connecting host bus adapters to mass storage devices such as hard disk drives and optical drives. Serial ATA was designed to replace the older parallel ATA (PATA) standard (often called by the old name IDE), offering several advantages over the older interface: reduced cable size and cost (7 conductors instead of 40), native hot swapping, faster data transfer through higher signaling rates, and more efficient transfer through an (optional) I/O queuing protocol. SATA-1 1.5Gbps, SATA-2 3Gbps & SATA -3 6Gbps.

Gigabit Ethernet is used for transmitting Ethernet data packets at a rate of 1 gigabit per second. The technology is typically used in computer networking. Typically, the standard uses an RJ45 connector with category 5, 5e, or 6 (CAT5, CAT5e, and CAT6) cable.

Digital Visual Interface (DVI) is a video display interface developed by the Digital Display Working Group (DDWG). The digital interface is used to connect a video source to a display device, such as a computer monitor. The interface is designed to transmit uncompressed digital video and can be configured to support multiple modes such as DVI-D (digital only), DVI-A (analog only), or DVI-I (digital and analog). Single link maximum data rate including 8b/10b overhead is 4.95 Gbit/s @ 165 MHz. With the 8b/10b overhead subtracted, the maximum data rate is 3.96 Gbit/s. Dual link maximum data rate is limited only by the bandwidth limits of the copper the DVI cable is constructed of and by the DVI signal’s source.

High speed contacts which consist of an outer contact with four inner contacts spaced to form two 100 ohm controlled impedance differential pair.

InfiniBand is a switched fabric computer network communications link used in high-performance computing and enterprise data centers. An InfiniBand link is a serial link operating at one of five data rates: single data rate (SDR), double data rate (DDR), quad data rate (QDR), fourteen data rate (FDR), and enhanced data rate (EDR). Single, double, and quad data rates carry 2, 4, or 8 Gbit/s.
