Presidents NtesWell here we goagain.I have been on avacation from art.Rather unusualfor me. The newhouse with the studio just for me is

at times daunting. It is my retreat so I should be creatinggreat masterpieces not! Oh well, life goes on. Hubbyand I took off for a few days for our 35th anniversary.Down to Amelia Island in Florida, colder there than inDenver! But, the views were beautiful! The drive northup through southern Georgia was a very different viewof life! The colors, paynes gray, burnt sienna, browns, golds, dark misty landscapes, made me rethink whatI was painting lately. I was a landscape painter beforebotanicals. Did I make a good shift? Is it permanent? Or

just a detour to something different? Who knows, I guessI am sort of a which way is the wind blowing sort of aperson. Now here is my thought, I think we like social activities asa group! Lets do more! I want to organize informal critiquegroups to help us reach farther and deeper into what we

can become as artists. No mater what we want as theultimate outcome, lets stretch!! I will host the rst oneand I am calling on you out there to host the subsequentmini-meetings. Lets say the rst week in March. Sundayafternoon, or an afternoon or an evening. Get togetherand share what you are doing or trying to do or thinkingof doing. We are your best critiques, best supporters, your colleagues! We need more connections as artists.Botanical art is sort of an odd duck, mostly appreciatedby other artists! We cant change the world but we can bethe best we can be!

How does March 5th afternoon sound? Bring your work!!Or, bring something to work on. Lets be exible but letsDO IT!! Let me know if an afternoon would work, or anevening. I cant guarantee as much champagne as whatmy husband was serving at the Christmas meeting butIm sure we will have fun!! E-mail or call and lets get itorganized!

Greetings from the state withmotto, How life should be!.

I know that the Maine lifeis not for most people, having just moved back

fourteen years in Colorado, nally feeling at peace. Everyd

go snow shoeing with my dog Rillathe Maine woods. Which unlike Colora

just out my front door! Yesterday, I madeold jaunt of going down to a small waterfall.

child, I used to venture in the woods and plathis watrefall. It is of course covered in about a foot ahalf of snow right now, but you can hear the water tricdown the fall underneath the snow. I love all of the tplants, snow and the wildlife of Maine. I noticed mtracks of birds, squirrels, foxes, coyotes, sher cats, dIn fact, down at the waterfall either a fox or coyote ma

bed. I could tell that it must have slept there throughnight. The other day we ushed a rafter of turkeys the woods. They had been digging for food in the snowwhen we approached them, they all went running or for the tree branches above.

Right now, I am of course trying to settle in and get morganized. Im getting through everything, but Im livinmaybe an eighth of what I was living in. Very tightI havent even set up a place to do art! My rst pris to get my landscaping business up and running. Ibe interesting to discover what I have forgotten agardening in Maine. Im getting ready to start my vegeseedlings. It truly is the cheaper route to go when somis as crazy about gardening as I am.

I am very excited to visit the Coastal Maine BotaGardens in Boothbay (Boothbay is where my Mufrom). I have visited three times in the past. My inherited my Grandfathers little house right on the wwhich is walking distance to the Botanical Gardens (Gramps house is for sale for those of you out therelove Maine!). Believe me, if I had the money I would bup in a heartbeat!

I know some of you are surprised to hear that I mback to Maine. It has been in the works for quite awbut the good thing is that Ill still be doing the newsleIm happy that I will still be doing it, as it will help mstay into contact with all of you. I have joined the England Society of Botanical Artists, but I will also rea member of RMSBA. It will be interesting to discoverNESBA operates.

Ill sign off with the excitement of getting to paintingMaine ora and hopefully I will truely start producing!

The Rocky Mountain Society of Botanical Artists founded in1997 is the rst chapter of the American Society of BotanicalArtists and is open to all persons interested in botanicalillustration.

    Dear Members;

Exhibits are such an important part of the RMSBA, both to fulll our mission to educate the public, as well as to support eaof you as you grow as artists. Included in our newsletter this time is the Exhibits Policy for the RMSBA. I am the Exhibits Chand my job is to be a clearing house for exhibit activities, as well as provide support to the Exhibit Coordinator and individuExhibit Chairs for exhibitions that the RMSBA wants to present. The attached policy and sample call for entries is a rst stin that direction. In addition, Ill have available to Exhibit Coordinators calls for entries that are exhibit specic; Xcel forms fkeeping track of entrants, with space for entrants name, address, contacts, and detailed artwork info including Latin binomiaCommon Name titles, media, size of image, framed size and notes. The standardization of requirements and record keeping wmake staging new shows easier, and helps with record keeping that informs and educates our members. I am happy to suppthe Exhibit Coordinator, Exhibit Chairs and Volunteers whenever possible with forms, facts, budget management, and creatof exhibit publications (postcards and catalogs). The Exhibit Coordinator will oversee actual exhibit development, and will report to me to conrm exhibits, dene volunteeinvolved, and ask for help where necessary.Exhibit Chairs are needed to organize and recruit volunteers per exhibit, and will report directly to their Exhibit CoordinatoThe RMSBA has materials and supplies for exhibits. For example, there are lights, portfolio bins, general signage and electricords available for exhibit use, as well as reception materials.Exhibit volunteers are needed for each exhibit planned, to help with art movement or storage, hanging, afxing signage, heat openings with refreshments, information for patrons, etc. The roles are many, and you may have thought of one youd likesee at an exhibit opening that you can ll.

That being said, we are in need of an Exhibits Coordinator, whose job would be to solicit from members new exhibit suggestiofor themes, venues, dates, etc. that meet exhibit policies. I strongly encourage you to consider this rewarding position for oorganization. The interaction with members is wonderful, and the satisfaction of working with venues is not only rewarding ba great education about the way great art makes its way to the public. If you have ideas of venues or themes or wish to volunteer to organize an exhibition, please contact me. We have no exhibscheduled for 2011, and that process needs to start immediately for successful exhibit completions.Thank you for your continued support of the ASBA. Your Board continues to work for you, in ways that insure our organizat

continues to grow and support your goals and talents. They are a dedicated and long-committed group, who have contributyears to our success.Wishing you all the best in 2011.Libby KyerExhibits Chair

    RMSBA Exhibition Creation and Management

What is our mission? The RMSBA shall create public awareness of and appreciation for botanical art, historical and contemporary, in the Rocky Mountregion. The RMSBA shall introduce the public to the beauty and usefulness of botanical art and illustration through exhibitions, demonstratioworkshops, and other forms of educational opportunities. The RMSBA recognizes that botanical artists frequently work alone in a discipline that is demanding and technically challenginTherefore, the RMSBA provides a forum for artists to meet, talk, and discuss relevant issues while also providing for camaraderie afun among other botanical artists.

To advance the organization and members goals, exhibits are an integral part of Chapter life. The following requisites are necessfor the RMSBA to support a members exhibit.1. Dening an RMSBA Exhibit:

    1. Exhibit must meet RMSBA/ASBA denitions of botanical art2. Members submitting must have current dues paid3. Standards for exhibit spaces must be met (see below)4. Exhibits must meet dened frequency and duration denitions.

Exhibits proposed that do not meet these basics may certainly be put together, but will not be dened or titled as an RMSBA exhib

    2. Creating a manageable schedule:Enthusiasm for exhibiting is high. Very short exhibits or too many exhibits in a year will discouragetop quality art, as artists need time to create. Its also really important to make sure the RMSBAhas a schedule that falls regularly, so that patrons can anticipate the events.Suggested:

    One general exhibitionOne themed exhibition

If the opportunity for a signicant exhibition opportunity outside of these guidelines arises, we of course will consider its merits, anit into the schedule if approved.

Anyone may propose an exhibit. The Board, Exhibits Chair and, when applicable, selection committee will make nal selectbased on established guidelines and the physical requirements for exhibitions.

Although sales are not part of our mission statement, they do meet the goals of our mission to involve the public in the art foTherefore, the two sales venues in spring (Tagawa) and fall (Echters) benet both artists and patrons, but are not exhibitions.

    3. Choosing a Venue:1. Adequate security, via venue or RMSBA member participation is required.2. Venue must be able to accommodate exhibition for desired time. Minimum exhibition time for RMSBAshows is 2 weeks. Extended shows are acceptable. Entry form will provide hanging time and3. Wall hanging or secured easel hanging must be available for framed work.4. Table display is permitted for small works (less than 12x14 framed) and accessory works (cards, prints, etc.)5. Portfolio bins may be used for matted artwork or prints, protected in plastic.6. Protection from risk is essential, including indoor environmental risks (moisture, heat, cold).7. Power for safe lighting must be available and provided by the venue.8. Venue should provide insurance for exhibited artworks while on display. If insurance is not provided, then an RMSBAmember must be with the artwork during open hours, and venue must provide secure locked premises for unmanned hou

    3. Standards for exhibition art:a. Recent work no older than 2 years from exhibit date. Variety of new works in theexhibits is paramount to good reviews, patron participation and sales.b. Adherence to individual exhibit requirements such as themes is required.c. Original work only, as dened by ASBA standardsd. Standard RMSBA entry form must be completed and submitted by stated deadlines.e. Entry fee must accompany completed entry form.

    4. Choosing included works:

    a. Unless otherwise stated for special exhibits, artworks are not juried forinclusion into RMSBA exhibitions any artwork meeting standards may be hung.b. Artworks must meet all standards for exhibition art as stated above.c. Artworks submitted must be framed and wired for hanging. Artworks withdamaged frames will not be hung unless repaired by artist.

    5. Sales at ExhibitsArtworks may be for sale at the artists discretion. Works for sale may have a commission charged by the venue, and will have a 1commission withheld by the RMSBA to support Chapter activities, including the exhibition expenses.

    6. Entry Forms:a. Entrants must complete the standard RMSBA Entry form and submit by stated deadlines.

    b. Entry fees must be included (check or money order) with entry form.c. Entry forms state all the requisites for entering an RMSBA show. Please read the form carefully, complete all elds with needed information, and sign the consent to exhibit statement.

    7. RMSBA support for chapter exhibitions:The Board, Exhibits Committee and Chair will support exhibitions for the RMSBA members via:

    a. Ensuring all guidelines for exhibits are met.b. Providing an Exhibits Manager from volunteers willing to serve as such.c. Providing budget support for:

Lighting as needed. Public relations and advertising in local/regional vehicles* Production of postcards for further promotion* Opening reception refreshments as appropriate. continued on page 9

The RMSBA executive committee met for a delightful

    Treasurers report from Vicky:

Bank account: 5306.04 current balance before

dues. RMSBA dues are still $90., $75. to ASBA.

Pending $25 salestax license for Centennial/Tagawa.

Colorado state tax is current through 2011.

The new 501c3 tax return was very easy to do online. When

RMSBA collects under $50,000 a year we can continue to do so.

    Other topics:

Credit Card Fees: We still have our Bank of the West

card/$23. per month fee without additional sales.

Susi suggested BBVA Compass Visa 9.95 per month.

Discussion followed of credit card usage at RMSBA shows.

RMSBA Web site: Susan announced our website was

a waste of money due to minimal trafc. We need

an RMSBA blog with images instead. It would be a

free and live method of communication. Katie could

connect members for interactive use. Libby suggestedit would be a good place to add exhibit entry forms.

Could also link to Mervis DBG blog.

    Recommendation of continued maintenance

    of domain name botanicalartists.org.

Katie suggested we update the list of Salesforce users.

Decision was made to sell our few remaining Rare tee shirts for

    $5.

    Member Changes:

01/03/11 Katie is moving back to Maine. However, she

gracefully offered to continue to do our newsletter for now.

TBD: We need Exhibit Manager(s) no

    exhibits are planned for 2011.

Annie Reiser is unable to continue as Program Director.

Susan DiMarchi is stepping down as Refreshment

Coordinator, and everyone knows what an excellent job

she did with her creative and delicious selections.

Julie Sprinkle is leaving the Marketingposition. There

was a discussion of this role being taken over by Exhibit

Manager, as marketing is usually associated with the

exhibits. (Another good idea for an RMSBA blog).

Susan Rubin (after many years of continued RMSBA

service) is not going to continue with the Web site. As

mentioned above, we can absorb her role with the blog.

Thanks to you all for your past/current contributionsto the group. Your work, enthusiasm and suggestions

have been greatly appreciated by all.

    RMSBA Exhibition Creation and Management

Libby presented the group with the members version of th

RMSBA Creation and Exhibition Management Guidelines.

An RMSBA exhibit mission was stated. Procedures

    included scheduling, standardized submissions, entry

forms, sales and venues. Note: Mentioned was the

requirement of all promotional info and signage to

carry the RMSBA/ASBA chapter logo block starting2011. Logo block can be obtained from Libby.

Libby also claried her role of Exhibit Chair, with

    Exhibit Managers and Committee members

    working per the individual exhibits.

Dorothy wondered if we had exhibit storage. Heidi could

no longer store the exhibit box and we needed a volunteer

Jan currently has possession of the RMSBA print stand.

American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA) 2014 Annual MeetingDenver, Colorado

    Hosted by

Rocky Mountain Society of Botanical Artists (RMSBA)

The 2014 annual meeting of ASBA will be held in Denver, Colorado. Although still 3 yearsaway, it is time to make arrangements for the meeting to be one of the best possible.

The annual meeting is held in the autumn each year at a location proposed by a local sponsor. After discussions between several RMSBA members, it was decided to begin with downtownDenver as a potential meeting location because of the number of hotels with meeting facilities, variety of restaurants, and proximity to the Denver Art Museum, Contemporary Art Museum, downtown galleries and other points of interest to visitors. The Denver Visitors Bureau wascontacted to see what might be available for October or November 2014. The week of 8-11October was identified as unavailable. The Visitors Bureau offered to handle contacting hotels.

As a result, a request for proposals for meeting space for 15-18 October 2014 was sent toseveral downtown hotels, with proposals due by 21 January 2011.

In addition to accommodations, classes and meetings, the ASBA meetings frequently have aconcurrent show of botanical art. A proposal was submitted to the Denver Art Museum (DAM)for such a show. While interested in botanical art, the DAM is not setting up small shows for2014. Other potential venues have been suggested for the ASBA show.

Putting on a successful annual meeting requires considerable up-front work by the host chapter. The following help is needed for the Denver meeting:

Conference co-chairsLocal logistics committee (ensures all activities are completed!)

Develop conference titleRegistration packets and conference giftDevelop conference PowerPoint for 2013 meetingKeep conference recordsFollow-up reports

Hotel/site liaison and transportation coordinatorsShow committeeLocal registration committeeEducation committee (identify Colorado-based courses and field trips)Local silent auction supportGraphic design (including development of meeting logo)Keynote speaker committee

    Public relations

There is a great deal of work to be done and plenty to go around! If you are interested in joiningthe initial activities, please send an e-mail to Terry Ruiter ([email protected]) and DorothyDePaulo ([email protected]). If you have thoughts on any of the topics listed, please passthem along. Your involvement will be a terrific way to highlight the botanical art being done inthe Rocky Mountain region....and will be a lot of fun!
