NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 2 AUGUST 9, 2020
This past Friday we held the
Graduation Ceremony for
the Class of 2020 from IJP
School. Proud parents and
staff gathered with the
graduates in this very mov-
ing ceremony. As they were
applauded and wished well for their future journey,
I think we all realized how important of a role they
will play in shaping the world to come.
This August we will also be celebrating our Confir-
mation and First Communion ceremonies.
As of this typing our school is opening with in
house classes as well as the option of stay at home
classes. I attended the School Board meeting this
past week, what a wonderful leader—Mrs. Charlotte
Kelly— and what a great team of teachers.
This Sunday is the Taste of Polonia at the fair-
grounds where I reside. If you have cabin fever,
come on out. (two blocks North of Glenwood Oaks)
wear a mask. It is located on several acres of land
with over 50 picnic tables. It is very easy to be so-
cially distanced while enjoying the live Music, fes-
tive food and drinks, boat rides, train rides, mini
raffles and of course a tour of the compound filled
with a variety of animals. Gates open at 12 Noon
and the Music begins at 3:00PM.
In today’s scripture, Jesus saves Peter from drown-
ing. At the fairgrounds all who board the paddle
boats will be handed a life vest.
Let's Polka - Father Ron
A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains
and crushing rocks before the LORD—
but the LORD was not in the wind.
After the wind there was an earthquake—
but the LORD was not in the earthquake.
After the earthquake there was fire—
but the LORD was not in the fire.
After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.
When he heard this,
Elijah hid his face in his cloak
and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.
1 Kgs 19:11-13
In the first reading from the First Book of Kings, Elijah
thought that God could be found in the wind, thunder-
storm, earthquake and fire but, instead, he experi-
enced the Lord in a tiny, whispering sound.
We too expect to find God in supernatural signs and
wonders. We travel to places where apparitions oc-
curred and miracles happened. Yet, we struggle to find
God in the ordinary events of our lives.
How many of us are able to see God in the love and
kindness of our family members and friends? How
many of us see God in the beauty of the nature, in the
sunrise and the sunset? How many of us can see God
in our accomplishments and even failures? Perhaps,
like Elijah, we are too blind or too preoccupied to find
God revealing Himself to us in “a tiny, whispering
sound.”
“A common mistake we make is that we look for God
in places where we ourselves wish to find him, yet
even in the physical reality this is a complete failure.
For example, if you lost your car keys, you would not
search where you want to search, you would search
where you must in order to find them.” Criss Jami
As we celebrate our graduates‘ accomplishments, I
would like to thank our Principal Mrs. Charlotte Kelly,
IJP Faculty and Staff. Your leadership, dedication and
commitment are exemplary. Congratulations to our
Graduates. As you graduate from IJP and begin a new
chapter in your life, may you be blessed with the ability
of discovering God in ordinary moments and ordinary
people.
As Shauna Niequist wrote, “God is waiting to be found
everywhere, in the darkest corners of our lives, the
dead ends and bad neighborhoods we wake up in, and
in the simplest, lightest, most singular and luminous
moments. He's hiding, like a child, in quite obvious
and visible places, because he wants to be found.”
Blessings,
Fr. Jack
NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 3 AUGUST 9, 2020
There is a group of
us senior men who
used to meet almost
daily in the coffee
shop at the local
Mariano’s Market. Since COVID-19 we have gone
“high-tech” and now chat a few times each week
via Zoom. Our conversations used to cover every-
thing from family life to gardening, sports and hob-
bies to church news and when things got boring,
politics became the conversation of choice. Six
months of quarantine, fear of the virus and the un-
known has created a storm in all our lives. It ap-
pears as if friendships and faith are being tested.
Like the apostles in today’s Gospel, there’s fear of
the storm, what will it bring, who will be affected
and only a guess at when it will end. We are all
men of faith, but it seems there is no answer to our
prayers. Has he abandoned us, left us alone on
this sinking ship in the middle of the storm? Or do
we just not hear God’s voice responding to our
cries? And most certainly, many outside our little
group must feel as we sometimes do.
Like Elijah waiting to hear the voice of God in the
force of the wind or the crushing of an earthquake,
and like the apostles waiting to be saved from the
storm tossed ship, we may at times feel lost and
abandoned. It is at these times, more than ever,
that a deep faith in our Triune God will strengthen
us. He will calm our fears and end the storms that
create havoc and doubt in our lives. It may take
more time than any of us would like to take but
have faith, you will hear His voice calming the
storm.

CORONAVIRUS PRAYER
Lord Jesus Christ, you travelled through towns and
villages curing every disease and illness. At your
command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid
now, in the midst of the global spread of the corona-
virus, that we may experience your healing love.
Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they re-
gain their strength and health through quality medi-
cal care.
Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from
working together and neighbors from helping one
another. Heal us from our pride, which can make us
claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no bor-
ders. Lord Jesus Christ healer of all, stay by our side
in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.
Be with those who have died from this virus. May
they be at rest with You in Your eternal peace. Be
with the families of those who are sick or have died.
As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness
and despair. May they know Your peace.
Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all
medical professionals who seek to heal and help
those affected and who put themselves at risk in
the process. May they know Your protection and
peace.
Be with the leaders of all nations. Give them the
foresight to act with charity and true concern for the
well-being of the people they are meant to serve.
Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solu-
tions that will help prepare for or prevent future out-
breaks. May they know Your peace, as they work
together to achieve it on earth.
Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by
many people suffering from this illness or only a
few, Lord Jesus Christ stay with us as we endure
and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of anxiety,
give us Your peace. Lord Jesus Christ, heal us.
AMEN.
