Guilty as charged, I answered, turning around. What gave me away? My characteristic rug- ged looks, my reputation as a olk hero, or the act that Im lifing a threeton tractor over my headright now?

wasnt much better.I saw the invaders the Ultimians again. Legions of superhumans, ying through the skies,individually and in their silver ships, each one wielding a power ul laser. Razing buildings. Killing people. I saw the Red Bat blasting them with her sonic waves, and they resisted and red back.One Ultimian spotted me trying to hide and red his laser.

When I woke up I thought about things for a while. Considered my chances, and went downtown,to talk about this new Peacekeepers team with Mr. Smith over a cup o morning coffee.

A year ago, everything changed, and the worldplummeted into chaos.

Wed known about li e on alien planets be ore quite a few aliens have visited us with various mes-sages. Some o them took to protecting our planet,and some became a major threat. Luckily, thanksto numerous superheroes, especial ly FrontLine, ourbeloved elite team, they werent much o a threat.One riddle, which ofen surprised our researchersand scientists was that aliens though not all othem are so amazingly humanoid. Just a year ago,the Ultimians arrived.

Tis is not their real name. Weve called themthat because everyone, every single one of them, wasa power ul superhuman, equaling the members oFrontLine and with access to powerful technologyto boot. Te heroes, be ore they all got killed, man-aged to learn a couple o things about this warriorrace: Tey are power ul, orming a massive inter-stellar Dominion, highly developed, and aggressive.Apparently, theyve eliminated all beings clearly dif-erent rom them rom our galaxy millennia ago since they found them imperfect and repulsive. Tey

were even stronger than Spartan, the strongest of theheroes of Earth and they attacked us in retaliationor some unspecied disobedience.

We ought. Both the superheroes and ordinarypeople. Brilliant inventors sent giant robots to thefront lines and Russia even deployed nuclear weap-ons, but to no effect. Millions o ordinary peopledied. Scores o superheroes perished. And aferthree days the invasion came to an end, as quicklyas it began. A supervillainess known as the Empressattacked the Ultimians with a previously unknown

powerful energy weapon. For the rst time we man-aged to kill some of them and almost immediatelyafer that, they retreated into space. Disappearedwithout a word.

Te Empress maintains, however, that they willreturn. Did we win? Or maybe the Ultimians gotwhat they wanted?

The World As It IsMost o the great cities have been razed. Verity

City, once known or its superheroes, is in ruinsand most likely will not be rebuilt, as it was one othe main battleelds o the Ultimian Invasion. Tecapital cities o most developed nations have beencompletely destroyed, and both the authorities andthe citizens perished. A lot o ancient cities wereapparently very interesting to the Ultimians andmany o them were also traditional capitals. Manyinternational groups managed to survive, mostlythanks to their dispersed structures large corpora-tions, United Nations, or WHO.

Many countries, both the richer and the poorerones have already collapsed. Fortunately, however,a lot of supporting infrastructure is relatively intact,as the invaders seem to have ocused on signicantcities. Te U.S. President may be dead, but the postoffice, roads, energy distribution and the Internetstill are working, at least most o the time.

In America, the Ultimians have devastated mucho Washington DC despite it not being a majorcity. Te current President is Chad Lake, the former

U.S. ederation, individual states are very indepen-dent which has its good and bad sides: while manystates are rather sel -sufficient and can unctiondespite the destruction o the ederal government,the balkanization o the US is a very real threat.In Europe, the situation is similar: not only is the

European Union effectively destroyed, but also somesupervillains were able to carve out their own smallholdings, making themselves kings, or... emperors.Te Empress took a small valley in the Balkans anddeclared it the rst area conquered by the Empireo Mankind and she was not the only one to doso. Chaos and con usion afer the clash with aliensonly inamed ongoing conicts. Many poorer,less developed countries were urther harmed bythe problems o the power ul nations, while manyringe religions considered the Ultimians divinepunishment, and that alone could be a reason ora serious conict.

Te United Nations Security Council has agreedon the need to set up a new elite team of superheroes.Someone who will ght or a just cause, someoneto be the symbol o the new world, emerging like aphoenix rom the ashes. Te greatest superheroesin the world who will actively work or peace andstability.

LIKE R EALITY ,UNLESS O THERWISE N OTED Te two major differences between our world

and the world o Peacekeepers are the presence osuperheroes and villains and the alien invasion. Tegood and evil superhumans usually balanced out,so in effect this worlds history wasnt really thatdifferent rom ours. For instance, costumed super-spy Valiant couldnt kill Hitler, because the Fhrerwas protected by Kapitan Krieg. Sometimes historydiverged, but without ar reaching changes orinstance Kennedy was reportedly killed by Glare,a newbie supervillain, but this did not change the

opinions o tin oil-hat wearers.
