CORNER OF 28TH I arrived at the Sacristy and Dominic Gartonzavesky, a young man and a devoted Latin Mass acolyte, asked me: “Does it take you long to write your articles? I enjoy reading them.” I said to him: “Not at all. Once I know what I’m writing about, I sit down, the ideas come to me and I start typing them up.” I thanked him for sharing that he enjoys reading them. Not many people who enjoy them have the time or the courtesy to say it. In fact, when before Mass I walk in the church, I see from far away people reading the Corner of 28th but when I am about to pass by their pew they put the bulletin aside and pretend to be reading the Song book or the Missal. One day I felt like laughing out loud because one them was pretending to be reading the Missal but the book was upside-down. How funny! But Dominic’s question allows me to briefly describe the process and how I gather my thoughts and transform them into my weekly Corners of 28th. Throughout the day I collect thoughts for my writings: it can be something or someone I saw, something someone said or did and that gave me food for thought. Small things people find insignificant are sometimes a source of inspiration because they are based on real life issues that we all have to face and wish to settle peacefully. They have a message addressed not only to my readers but to myself as well. And many times – so many that I lost count – as I am typing my articles I feel tears rolling down my cheeks, that’s how much I feel and relive my experiences. I love to write and I should always have a pen on me but, believe it or not, every time I need a pen to write, before I ask for one, guess who takes one from his pocket and hands it to me? Yes! Almeirindo. There is no Chef as complete and ready as him. Instead of a “pan” he has a pen with him at all times, even in the kitchen. Each time it happens I promise myself to be prepared the next time around but I haven’t learned the lesson. Worse yet, I often have no paper either and so the thoughts and ideas are written on the strangest pieces of paper: napkins, wrapping paper, box paper, etc. I’ve used them all to write ideas that will mature and eventually bear fruit. If you saw the folder where I keep all my notes, you would see what I am talking about. Then there is the process of grouping them so they are used wisely, followed by the process of priority and, if possible, reaching the parishioners on time and for the right celebration, civil or religious. And today I opened it, read some notes (could hardly understand my own handwriting), and this is one of the many true stories: It was a Wednesday – my day off – and I spent it watching my granddaughters to give my daughter a break. For lunch I drove to IN & OUT Burger, Gilroy. As I was in line with no clerical shirt, I noticed a young man staring at me. I didn’t know him. While waiting for the food, I sat down next to him – it was the only open spot. He turns and says: “Father?” and I said “Yes! How do you know?” He goes: “You married us two years ago. We are having problems and I have been willing to call you to discuss our marital problems but I haven’t had the courage and now, what a coincidence, God brought you to me!” At that time my food was ready. I gave him my card and now wait for them to come and visit me. God made it happen and the power of prayer will soon reunite them as they look for a peaceful and loving way to continue living their sacramental union, facing the challenges, yes, but turning them into new opportunities to love more and more.

Be part of “The Tile Project” where we will engrave the names of deceased loved ones, on the tiles in the vestibule of the church, perpetuating their memory.

Our Advent reconciliation Service will be on Monday, December 17th, at 7:30pm, with priests speaking Portuguese, English and Spanish.

Near the Altar is the Box for All the Faithful Departed where you can drop the envelope with the names of deceased ones whom we will pray for in the Masses celebrated this month. If you didn’t receive the envelope, get one from the church or parish office.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————— CHRIST IS KING On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It’s easy to understand today’s scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus’ words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, he “has made us into a kingdom” (Revelation 1:6)—one people united in love and peace for all eternity. Copyright © J. S. CANTO DA 28 Cheguei à Sacristia e Dominic Gartonzavesky, um jovem e dedicado acólito da missa em latim, perguntou-me: “Leva muito tempo para escrever os seus artigos? Eu gosto de lê-los”. Eu disse-lhe: “De modo nenhum. Uma vez que eu sei o que vou escrever, sento-me, as ideias ocorrem-me e eu começo a escrevê-las”. Agradeci-lhe por compartilhar que ele gosta de lê-los. Não são muitas as pessoas que gostam deles e que têm tempo ou o civismo para dizê-lo. De facto, quando antes da missa eu ando na igreja, vejo ao longe pessoas lendo o Canto da 28, mas quando estou prestes a passar pelo banco onde se encontram colocam o boletim de lado e fingem estar a ler o livro dos Cânticos ou o Missal. Um dia, deu-me vontade de rir alto porque um deles fingia estar a lendo o Missal, mas o livro estava de cabeça para baixo. Que engraçado! Mas a pergunta do Dominic permite-me descrever brevemente o processo e como eu recolho os meus pensamentos e os transformo semanalmente nos meus Cantos da 28. Ao longo do dia, eu recolho pensamentos para os meus escritos: pode ser alguma coisa ou alguém que vi, algo que alguém disse ou fez e que me fez pensar. Pequenas coisas que as pessoas acham insignificantes são, às vezes, uma fonte de inspiração, porque são baseadas em questões da vida real que todos nós temos que encarar e desejamos resolver pacificamente. Têm uma mensagem dirigida não apenas aos meus leitores, mas também a mim mesmo. E muitas vezes - tantas que perdi a conta - enquanto escrevo os meus artigos, sinto as lágrimas rolando pelas minhas faces, é tal o que sinto e revivo as minhas experiências. Adoro escrever e deveria ter sempre comigo uma caneta, mas, acreditem ou não, todas as vezes que eu preciso de uma caneta para escrever, antes de pedir uma, adivinhem quem tira uma do bolso e a entrega a mim? Sim! O Almeirindo. Não há Chefe de cozinha tão completo e pronto como ele. Em vez de uma "panela" ele tem uma caneta consigo a tida a hora, mesmo na cozinha. Cada vez que acontece, prometo estar preparado na próxima vez, mas não aprendi a lição. Pior ainda, eu também nem sempre tenho papel e então os pensamentos e ideias escrevo-os nos mais estranhos pedaços de papel: guardanapos, papel de embrulho, papel de caixa, etc. Eu tenho usado todos eles para escrever ideias que amadurecerão e eventualmente darão fruto. Se vissem a minha pasta onde guardo todas os meus apontamentos, saberiam a que me refiro. Depois, há o processo de agrupá-los para que sejam usados com sabedoria, seguido pelo processo de prioridade e, se possível, chegando aos paroquianos a tempo e para a celebração certa, civil ou religiosa. E hoje eu abri-a, li algumas notas (quase não entendia a minha própria caligrafia), e esta é uma das muitas histórias verídicas: Era uma quarta-feira - o meu dia de folga - e passei-o a cuidar das minhas netas para dar um descanso à minha filha. Para o almoço eu fui ao IN & OUT Burger, Gilroy. Quando estava em linha, sem camisa clerical, notei um jovem que olhava para mim. Eu não o conhecia. Enquanto esperei pela comida, sentei-me ao lado dele - era o único lugar disponível. Ele vira-se e diz: "Padre"? E eu disse: "Sim! Como sabe”? Ele diz: “O senhor casou-nos há dois anos. Estamos com problemas e eu tenho querido telefonar para si e falar dos nossos problemas conjugais, mas não tive coragem e agora, que coincidência, Deus trouxe-o até mim”! Naquele momento a minha comida estava pronta. Dei-lhe o meu cartão e agora espero que eles venham visitar-me. Deus fez que assim acontecesse, e o poder da oração cedo os reunirá pois eles

buscam uma maneira pacífica e amorosa de continuar a viver a sua união sacramental, enfrentando os desafios, sim, mas transformando-os em novas oportunidades de amar cada vez mais. ——————————————————————————————————————————————————
