A new approach to column and bracket maintenance›
We recommend reading the latest edition of the Institution of Lighting Professionals’ technical report 22 called ‘Managing a vital asset: Lighting supports’. It provides lighting engineers with useful guidance in the management of lighting columns and brackets.
In particular, TR22 recommends creating management procedures based on a foundation of pro-active and consistent equipment condition assessments and the application of a risk assessment strategy.
We have been supplying our customers with columns and
brackets for use with our luminaires for over 25 years. As many of
our products are well into their design life, we want to endorse
the recommendations made for maintaining both columns and
brackets.
These include carrying out detailed structural inspections,
including fi xings, on each occasion that the column, bracket or
traffi c sign is visited for maintenance.
Our engineering team has access to past product drawings and
specifi cations and is available to advise you on the best course of
action when approaching TR22.

Philips’ OEM guarantee update›
Philips has recently clarifi ed its guarantee relating to the appropriate application of their lamps and gear, especially for the CosmoPolis system.
In the past, there has been a lot of mis-information in the marketplace over whether this system is suitable for use in specifi c products. However, Philips recently published the terms and conditions of its warranty to OEMs in the ‘Lighting’ section of their website. This sets out the conditions under which the system is supplied to Urbis and also details of the warranty, which we began passing on in full to our customers from 1st July 2010.
The good news is that all HID Primavision Xtreme and Dynavision
Xtreme ballasts have an eight year warranty. For products such as
the Urbis Evolo 2, equipped with the CosmoPolis system, their
class-leading thermal management, coupled with the long
guarantee, offers complete peace of mind for customers requiring a
high performance lighting system.

Urbis’ Sapphire keeps the bats happy in Ireland›
This is the fi rst lighting scheme in Europe that has used louvres to reduce the lux levels to a point where the local bats remained unaff ected, according to a leading bat specialist.
Over recent years, the Grand Canal in West Dublin had fallen into disuse. Coimín McLoughlin, Senior Design Engineer of Clifton Scannell Emerson Associates (CSEA), worked on a scheme to rejuvenate the canal.
“Dublin City Council, South Dublin County Council and Waterways
Ireland wanted the canal route to be useable 24 hours a day to
encourage more use of the new footpath and cycleway. However, wildlife
surveys showed that the canal was home to many species of bat.”
The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) was responsible for
granting a derogation licence for this scheme to have 24 hour lighting.
CSEA started by commissioning extensive wildlife surveys to determine
whether the bats would still use the canal once the new lighting was
operational.
Coimín commented, “considering the bats would not feed if the light
was brighter than the full moon meant a truly innovative lighting solution
was needed. So, Urbis’ project team developed specially designed
louvres which fi t into the Sapphires and ensure that no light spills onto
the canal or hedges where the bats feed.”
“Urbis supplied 309 of their functional Sapphire 2 luminaires, equipped
with 50W SON lamps whose softer light doesn’t attract insects away
from the canal water. To the delight of all the stakeholders, this scheme
has proved a real success and, most importantly, all the wildlife has
remained unaffected.”
The installation contractor for this scheme was Read Electrical.

Middlesbrough Council’s LED trial is an energy saving success›
Middlesbrough council has achieved an energy saving of 65% by using our Nano LED luminaire on a trial scheme along a well used cycle and footpath route.
Now that the Carbon Reduction Commitment scheme has started, it is vital to choose the correct lighting equipment in order to maximise the potential energy savings. Rob Warner, a Lighting Engineer with Middlesbrough Council, explained about their lighting comparison trial.
“The main aim of the trial was to determine the energy savings we
could make, but also to assess the visual impact of street lighting
between the differing light sources. So we planned a trial on a typical
footpath and cycleway to see how we could benefi t from LED
technology.”
The chosen route was already lit with seven 70W SON fi ttings. The
Council then selected our stylish Nano 2 LED luminaire as
the alternative light source and we supplied them with 11 units.
Rob commented, “Urbis’ Nano units use just 22W, compared to the
90W consumption of the SONs. Although we put in more LED units
than we will be taking SONs out, the difference in energy usage
alone is still quite impressive.”
The Council will also see other benefi ts from using LED technology.
Maintenance costs are reduced as the units are expected to last at
least four times longer than the SONs and the LEDs’ reliability
reduces the need for scouting along the footpaths.
Rob added, “Urbis’ Nano LED luminaire has proven to be an
excellent solution and this trial scheme has reduced our overall
energy usage on this particular footpath by 65%.”

Historic castle walls brought to life by Urbis’ Neos LEDs›
If you are strolling around Barnard Castle in Durham, you can now view an eye catching fl oodlighting scheme involving our cost eff ective Neos LED fl oodlights.
Ian Dawson, Senior Professional Assistant at Durham County Council, was responsible for the scheme and told us, “the Barnard Castle Vision Group wanted to re-illuminate the castle walls as the original SON fl oodlighting had not been operational for over four years.”
With the fi nance provided by the Vision Group, the Town Council,
English Heritage and Durham County Council, the scheme started by
conducting a trial to assess the preferred lighting option. When the
Council saw the potential of LEDs to reduce their energy and
maintenance costs and effectively illuminate the walls, it made the
decision easy.
Ian stated, “we went with Urbis as they manufacture high quality
products. Also, in their tender price, they offered to set up and
maintain the LEDs’ DMX programming sequence for us.”
Seventeen fully adjustable Neos fl oodlights are fi tted with 36 one Watt
LEDs. They are mainly mounted at 6m, mostly in pairs, on new
columns and wash the castle walls with varying tones of colours. The
Abbey luminaires are mounted at 5m and are fi tted with 45W
CosmoPolis lamps. These illuminate the footpaths around the castle
with a soft white light.
Ian commented, “the decision to mount both fi ttings on one column
has reduced clutter and also means the fl oodlights are not in close
proximity to the walls”
“The new fl oodlighting has received many positive comments and has
made one of the town’s principal pedestrian routes feel much safer.”

Urbis - off ering a practical solution whatever your needs›
Our aim is to deliver the most cost eff ective, low energy, high quality lighting scheme possible. Here we highlight a number of options available to our customers.
OUR SOLUTION YOUR BENEFITS
SEALSAFE®
Our revolutionary Sealsafe® system has been preventing dust and water ingress to IP66 standard for 25 years!
This allows Urbis customers the opportunity to consider replacing the gear, lamp and other components instead of installing new luminaires, even if the units have been in service for a considerable time.
This approach has already brought many of our customers the benefits of utilising white light and electronic gear, but at a much lower capital outlay.
LED LUMINAIRESWith our new range of LED luminaires, users can take advantage of the latest technology to reduce their energy costs, whilst still maintaining high quality lighting levels.
Read more about the wide range of benefits our new LED luminaires can bring on pages 6 and 7.
NANOThe Nano is a compact luminaire that can be fitted with 12 or 16 LEDs.
It’s designed as a low cost solution to work most effectively on footpaths or for urban spaces where a relatively low lighting level is acceptable.
FORTIMOThe Fortimo is a LED light module that is particularly suitable for users wanting to make a low cost move from traditional HID lanterns to a LED white light solution.
For example, our new Evolo luminaires can easily be switched to an LED solution with this technology.
CENTRAL MANAGEMENT
SYSTEMS (CMS)
CMS brings control to the lighting engineer. For example, users can easily programme lamps to dim or turn off during set hours to reduce energy consumption.
Additionally, the amount of data collected helps manage maintenance and accurately reports power consumption.
Importantly, many of our products are designed to incorporate CMS systems, both new and retrofit.

Neos LEDs provide cost saving solution for gantry lighting›
We recently developed a low cost maintenance solution for motorway and trunk road gantry lighting by equipping our Neos 3 with LEDs.
Craig Prescott is the Electrical Manager for A-one+ on the Highways Agency’s MAC Area 14 contract. He explained, “the improvements we are making to the Newcastle Western Bypass involved lane closures, so we took the opportunity to upgrade the old sign gantry lighting at the same time. We know Urbis supply quality products, so we asked them to provide a solution”.
1
To assess the potential maintenance and energy savings they could
make by using our new Neos GL LEDs, A-one+ decided to run a trial
by replacing the lighting on four of the gantries along the bypass.
Craig commented, “the LEDs in the Neos GLs have an expected
lifetime of 60,000 hours compared to a fl oodlight fi tted with a HID
lamp, which requires a lamp change around every 8-12,000 hours.
Consequently, this delivers a really signifi cant cost saving because we
won’t have to shut a lane and divert traffi c as many times to carry out
gantry lighting maintenance work.”
“We expect the new LED lighting to deliver energy savings and we are
also pleased with the quality of the white light produced in terms of
making the gantry signs highly visible to motorists.”
Our Neos GL can be used to illuminate new or existing gantry signs as
an up or down lighter. The units are designed to be easy to maintain
and are fi tted with self cleaning glass, which also assists in reducing
site maintenance visits.
