Syllabus and Schedule MUJS 1132 (Percussion)

Jazz Performance Fundamentals Instructor: Keith Karns

Meeting Time: 4 PM – Tuesdays and Thursdays Location: Rm. 287

Course Prerequisites: MUJS 1360, 1361 Course Objective: At the completion of this class students will demonstrate the ability to improvise on the jazz blues progressions and blues oriented tunes in a variety of keys. Course Activities:

1) Melody and Arpeggios - memorized and performed in class. 2) Transcription of important jazz improvisations – written and performed with music 3) Transcription memorization – performed from memory with or without CDs. 4) Playing Evaluations – performing improvised solos.

Class Policies: Attendance is required. After three unexcused absences the semester grade will be lowered one letter grade. Excused abscenses: illness (need a doctor’s note), family emergency (note from a family member) or approved university activities. Grading: All activities are graded on a 10 point scale (9 and above =A, 8 to 8.9 = B, 7 to 7.9 =C, etc.) Grade Weighting:

Written Transcriptions 40 % Memorized Transcriptions 40 % Playing Evaluations 20 % Total 100 %
