Mustard Seed Theatre presents

Gee’s Bend Opening performance was Friday, February 7, 2014

Performances continue Thursday, February 20 - Sunday, February 23

The play is the true story of the Pettway women of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. Through segregation, family turmoil, and the Civil Rights Movement, the women turn to quilting to provide comfort and context for their lives. These quilts, a labor of love and necessity, turn out to be valuable works of art. Featuring three strong women and interwoven with gospel music, Gee’s Bend is a deeply personal story of family, self-discovery and artistic expression. Beginning in 1939, the play follows Alice, her daughters Sadie and Nella, and Sadie’s husband, Macon, through segregation, family strife and the Civil Rights movement. Mustard Seed Theatre explores the effect of the Civil Rights Movement on this remote island community of Gees Bend. The all African American cast includes; Marty Casey as Alice/Asia, Jacqueline Thompson as Sadie, Alicia Like as Nella, and Reginald Pierre as Macon. Gee’s Bend located in southwest Alabama on a sliver of land five miles long and eight miles wide, a virtual island surrounded on three sides by a bend in the Alabama River, is accessible only by ferry and County Road 29. The area was founded by the Gee family in the early 1800s, and the land sold to Mark Pettway in 1845. After the Civil War, the freed slaves took the name Pettway and founded their own all-black, isolated community. Most of the 750 people living in Gee’s Bend today are descendants of slaves on the former Pettway plantation. Their forebears continued to work the land as tenant farmers after emancipation, and many eventually bought the farms from the government in the 1940s. Isolated geographically, the women in the community created quilts from whatever materials were available, in patterns of their own imagi-native design. In the mid-1960s, the Freedom Quilting Bee was founded as an offshoot of the Civil Rights Movement to foster community development by selling crafts. Resi-dents began taking the ferry across the river to Camden to try and register to vote. Ferry service was eliminated in 1962 to halt this effort, which lasted for 44 years. Without a ferry service for decades, the residents were confined by the river unless they made the hour-long drive to the county seat of Camden, directly across the river from Gee’s Bend. Ferry service was restored in 2006. All performances of Gee’s Bend are in the Fine Arts Theatre on the campus of Fontbonne University just south of Wydown Boulevard in Clayton. Tickets are available at the door or online through the Mustard Seed Theatre website at www.mustardseedtheatre.com For questions, call (314) 719-8060 Thursday evening performances are PAY WITH A CAN/PAY WHAT YOU CAN. These performances are supported by those who CAN pay. For those who cannot pay full price, we ask only for a CANned food donation. PAY WITH A CAN/PAY WHAT YOU CAN is an expression of Deanna Jent’s, Artistic Director, vision – A professional com-pany that would produce plays about faith and social justice while offering internship opportunities to Fontbonne theatre students.

We always hear tip-based stories about clever ways to cut your spending, but many of them come with a lifestyle change to which you might not be ready to commit. Such as: Growing your own vegetables, cutting your own hair and nixing the occasional latte that makes you feel more human during a difficult workweek. However, there are a bunch of painless changes you can make that can help you save more. If you’re up the creek without a paddle, these won’t help you too much. But if you’ve ever looked at your bank statement and thought “I could do better,” then this is for you.

Adjust Your ThermostatUnless you get hit with a polar vortex, you probably won’t notice a change of a few degrees. You should also lower your thermostat a few degrees before you leave the house and before you go to bed.

Turn Everything Off When You Leave Your HouseIf you’re convinced that a TV blasting “The People’s Court” and having a light in front of a window is what keeps you robbery-free, use a power strip with a timer.

Run Your Appliances At The Right TimeIf your utility company defines “peak” and “off-peak” hours, you’re probably spending more to run appliances during the former. Instead, shift your usage to “off-peak” hours. Don’t know what’s what? Ask your utility company.

Plan Your Meals Ahead Of TimeIf you head into a grocery store with no real idea of what you’re looking for, you’ll end up with a cart full of novelty ice cream products and frozen pizzas. At least that’s what we assume when we see our college-age neighbors out shopping. Have a hard time getting organized? Try this printable grocery planners from Design*Sponge, that kind of forces you to plan the week’s meals before you list groceries.

Compare The Right PricesAt the grocery store, you should always look at the unit price sticker when trying to decide between two items. The price of the best option might be higher, but gives you more for your money.

Use The Crock-Pot Your Mom Gave To YouAt the end of a long day, takeout just feels necessary. But if you get into the habit of oc-casionally throwing a few chicken breasts into a Crock Pot, along with a little bit of stock (from a box) before you go to work...dinner is just about ready once you come home. Clueless about where to start? Here are 77 slow cooker recipes to get you started.

Buy The Right Things In BulkEventually, trash bags will go on sale -- that’s when you stock up. Same for things like deodorant, toothpaste, toilet paper, etc. You spend a little bit more now, but save in the long run.

Check Your Air Pressure Once In A WhileYou’d be surprised at how many people don’t do this. Making sure your tires are properly inflated helps with gas mileage. The inside of your door usually has the ideal PSI (that’s pounds per square inch), which will guide you as you’re filling your tires at any gas station. Urbanites and/or public transportation devotees: Take advantage of any pre-tax commuter discount your job may offer you.

Know What’s In Your ClosetGoing through your clothing is a minor time investment, but it pays off when you realize that you keep buying plain black t-shirts when you already have enough of them to keep Ricky Gervais clothed for months. Knowing what you already have not only keeps you from spending more, but it gives you an opportunity to weed out the stuff that you’re not wearing, so you can donate, consign or eBay.
