Course Structure:This course format is traditional, meeting on campus once a week. During the class period the instructor will introduce the material being studied in each module. Written handouts will be shared as supplemental materials. The course is based on the material presented in the textbook and the handouts. The instructor will lecture to clarify important information and guide students as they gain new information about each body system. The student is encouraged to ask questions and clarify information as needed. The instructor will introduce a variety of learning activities to accommodate differing learning styles, aid in holding attention and make the class interesting and informative.

There will be small group activities assigned each week. Health care workers often work as part of a team. Each small group will work together during the quarter. In addition to enhancing the communication skills and critical thinking abilities of each student, each individual will have opportunities to develop leadership skills and teambuilding skills.

It is critical that each student accept the responsibility for the completion of all exercises, assignments, and reading materials. Class time will be devoted to discussing content, presenting enrichment materials, and answering one another’s questions.

Online submission requirementsIf a student is absent from class for any reason, homework may be submitted by email to the instructor. Metropolitan Community College uses Microsoft products as part of its standard software and encourages students to do the same. The student may save word-processed documents for file attachments in Microsoft Word .doc or .docx format. If your software does not allow either of these, then save files in Rich Text Format (rft)

COURSE ASSESSMENT

Methods of Assessing Student Progress: The student will earn a specific grade by earning points in a variety of activities.A module will be assigned each week. The student will be assigned specific reading assignments, written homework assignments, completion of a minimum of 1 internet activity, an additional assignment, and a one-minute paper.

HOMEWORK Homework is assigned weekly. Assignments must be submitted at the assigned time and date and in

full to receive credit. Incomplete assignments will earn a grade of zero. It is anticipated that all assignments will be submitted on the assigned due date. Occasionally there

may be exceptions. When exceptions are permitted, the assignment may submitted up to one week after the due date but the grade will be reduced by 20%

If a student is absent from class she/he may email the homework assignment to the instructor and receive full credit if it is sent before the class session

Assignments will NOT be accepted after one week. All homework is to be computer generated and it is due at the beginning of class each week. Internet assignments and additional assignments listed on the weekly module homework pages must

include source documentation using appropriate formatting. A one-minute paper is an integral part of each weekly assignment. It is a written summary of the

assignment; The student is to Write one complete question about a topic that is difficult to understand. It is a concept the

student would like to have discussed further in class. It is referred to as the MUDDY POINT Also to write an entire sentence about something important that has been learned from this

assignment. This is referred to as the IMPORTANT FACTThe points that a student may earn for homework each week is 100. It is broken down in the following manner:

Workbook assignment 40 points

Metro Community College Page Revised: 5/5/20234

Page 5: faculty.mccneb.edu 118…  · Web viewThe student may save word-processed documents for file attachments in Microsoft Word .doc or .docx ... is taking place ... precaution interrupts

Textbook assignment 15 points Internet assignment 15 points Worksheet 10 points Additional Assignment 15 points One-minute paper 5 points

The total number of incorrect points will be subtracted from 100, although there will be more than 100 questions to be answered. All questions requiring information from a source other than the textbook must be documented correctly. If they are not, 5 points will be deducted from the points earned. Be certain to use APA format for documentation.

ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATIONAttendance and participation will earn 10 points each week. Each student is expected to attend every class, arrive promptly, participate actively in all classroom assigned activities, and remain in class for the entire class period. Material may be covered that is not in the text. Information may be presented in sequence different from the text. A student who misses class for any reason is expected to cover the material missed on his/her own. Excessive absences or unsatisfactory progress will subject the student to administrative withdrawal from the course.

Prompt attendance is very important in the working environment. If the student is more than 15 minutes late or leaves more than 15 minutes early zero points will be earned for attendance and participation for the week. Students will also earn a zero points for attendance and participation if electronic devices are used inappropriately.

ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION POLICY: Attendance, active participation, and timely submission of assignments affect learning and grading in this course.  To remain eligible for financial aid, students are responsible for meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress standards.  Students who attend no class meetings up to and including the Section Census Data published in the Class Schedule at www.mccneb.edu/schedule/ may be disenrolled from the class.  There is no appeal for this disenrollment.  A student who fails to meet class attendance expectations may receive a final grade mark of FX, indicating an absence-related failure, or a failing (F) grade. STUDENT WITHDRAWAL: If you cannot participate in and complete this course, you should officially withdraw by calling Central Registration at 402-457-5231 or 1-800-228.9553.  Failure to officially withdraw will result in either an attendance-related failure (FX) or failing (F) grade.  The last date to withdraw is noted in the CLASS IDENTIFICATION section of this syllabus.

EXAMINATIONS AND SPECIAL PROJECTS Each week a computer generated objective test will be administered during the class session. It will be

graded and available for review after everyone in the class has completed the test.. The student will receive one point for each correct answer on the tests given weekly. The test content will include material from the assigned reading, the internet activities, handouts, and

classroom activities/discussions. All tests are taken online. There are no “retakes. Test dates may be changed at the instructor’s discretion.

Make-up Test Procedures:Students are expected to be present on the day of each scheduled test. There will be no retakes of tests.  Test dates are not firm and are, therefore, subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.  If the instructor is informed of a valid absence before a test, arrangements may be made for the student to take a make-up exam. The test will be taken online at a time the student chooses. The instructor will need to be informed of the exact time the student chooses. The test will be a timed test. Thirty seconds are allowed for each test

question. One test question at a time will be shown. Students will not be able to go back to previous test questions.  Students will have one week in which to make up the test.

Written Report: Each student is to research and collect information related to a specific disease that is NOT included in

the textbook, Essential of Human Diseases and Conditions. It is to be submitted on the date identified in the list of assignments. (THE FOURTH CLASS PERIOD)

If it is necessary for the student to be absent the day the written report is required, she/he may submit it as an email attachment and receive full credit if it is sent by the beginning of the required class period.

This written report is due the fourth class period of the quarter. If submitted late, 20% will be deducted from the points earned.

It may only be submitted a maximum of one week late. The student may earn 100 points for this written report. Refer to the specific guidelines and outline included as a separate document.

Oral Presentation: Each student is to research the health care of a specific country or culture and provide an oral Power

Point Presentation for the class. Students who require assistance in preparing a PowerPoint presentation may inquire at any of Metro’s Academic Resource Centers for instruction on how to complete this project.

The report is to indicate how people in other nations/countries, or cultures practice healthcare and how it differs from the medical procedures practiced here in the Midwest.

This presentation is to reflect how members of the health care team can meet the needs of people in a culture that is different from our own.

The student may earn 100 points for this oral presentation. Specific guidelines are included as a separate document.

Students will draw for dates to “present”. If the student does not present on the date assigned a penalty of 5 points will be assigned to the grade.

Refer to the project’s rubric and outline provided as a separate document.

Criteria for Determining Final Course Grade: The percentage grade each student earns is based on the number of points earned divided by the number of points available.

A - 90% - 100% B - 80% - 89% C - 70% - 79% D - 60% - 69% F - Below 60%

Homework and Research Assignments: Use a 12 Point font; Arial or New Times Roman Use APA format for citing references Respond to each point of each assignment Use spell check and grammar check Margins: Top/Bottom = 1 inch, and Right/Left = 1 inch

Allow equal opportunity for all class members to participate. Show respect for the opinions of others by voicing disagreements in a courteous manner. Respect the diversity of cultures, opinions, and viewpoints in the classroom. Listen to the instructor as well as to each other and treat all class members with respect. Strive for perfect attendance: be punctual (arrive on time and return from breaks on time). Come to class prepared (pen/pencil, textbook, paper, class supplies, homework assignments, etc.). Take responsibility for missed content (if absent from class). Attend the entire class session. Refrain from reading other materials, books, newspapers, etc. during class.

Electronic Devices Usage Usage of portable electronic devices (including cellular telephones, and musical devices) will not be

allowed during class. Calls/pages should be answered/made before or after class. Use of the Internet will not be allowed during class except at the specific direction of the instructor. Use

of computers to check e-mail or search the Internet during class will result in no credit for that day’s class attendance and participation.

Disruptive Classroom BehaviorCertain student behavior will result in the lowering of the course grade by at least one grade level, may result in an “F” grade for the course, and may result in the student’s suspension or expulsion from the college. The college reserves the right to exclude at any time, students whose conduct is deemed undesirable or injurious to the best interests of the College or of the students. These behaviors include, but are not limited to:

Dishonesty, including cheating, plagiarism, or knowingly furnishing false information or signatures on assigned work.

Intentional disruption, obstruction, or interference with the process of instruction. Racist, sexist, and other disrespectful comments.

Academic Honesty Statement: Nationally there have been increased incidences of cheating and plagiarism among the college and university student population. Although any case of cheating is cause for concern, it is an especially egregious violation in the medical and healthcare training fields. Patients trust their healthcare team with the most personal medical concerns and expect healthcare team members (including health information management personnel) to be competent and skilled in their area of expertise. This cannot be achieved if cheating or plagiarism is taking place during the educational process. Cheating of any kind in this field is an ethical violation and cannot be tolerated. In the healthcare community there is no room for individuals who are willing to compromise ethics for expediency.

All students are expected to abide by College policies.  These policies exist so that all students may pursue their educational goals in a fair and non-threatening environment.  Students are reminded that materials they may use as sources for this course may be subject to copyright protection.  Additional information about copyright is provided on the library webpage at http://www.mccneb.edu/library, by your instructor, or by the College’s Copyright Officer.  In response to incidents of student dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism, etc.), the College imposes specific actions that may include receiving a failing grade on a test, failure in the course, suspension from the College, or dismissal from the College.  The disciplinary procedures are available in Student Services.

PlagiarismIn an instructional setting, plagiarism occurs when a writer deliberately uses someone else’s language, ideas, or other original (not common knowledge) material without acknowledging its source. This definition applies to textual material published in print or online, to manuscripts, and to the work of other student writers. The purpose of the learning assignments in this course is to encourage students not simply to recycle information, but to investigate and analyze its sources.

To promote ethical use of source materials and integrity in students’ written work, Metroplotian Community College subscribed to Turnitin.com a service that provides document source analysis in order to detect plagiarism. Students enrolled in this course agree that all required work bay be submitted by the Instructor to

Metro Community College Page Revised: 5/5/20237

Turnitin.com. In an effort to assure that documents are written in an original “from scratch’ format by the student, no more than 20% of a document, may contain quoted material. If a student plagiarizes in excess of 20% of a document, that activity will receive a zero. A second submission in the course indicating plagiarism in excess of 20% will result in failure of the course.

Failure to officially withdraw will result in either an instructor withdraw (IW) or failing (F) grade. The last date to withdraw from this course is identified in the Course Identification section of this syllabus.

Student Code of Conduct: The college has a standard code of conduct that involves consequences for specific academic and non-academic behavior that may result in a failing grade, probation, or suspension from the college. More complete information about the code of conduct is located in the Student Services portion of the online catalog http://www.mccneb.edu/catalog/studentinformation.asp.
