127 Probability of Compound Events

Goals:

1.Find probabilities of independent and dependent events.

2. Find probabilities of mutually exclusive events.

Review of Simple Probability and OddsProbability of an event is the ratio of the number of favorable outcomes for the event to the total number of possible events.

Sample space is a list of all possible outcomes.

What is the probability of rolling a 1 on a cube?

Tree diagramA tree diagram is one method used for counting the number of possible outcomes

This is an example of Fundamental Counting Principle(number of outcomes to number of choices.)

OddsThe odds of an event occurring is the ration that compares the number of ways an event can occur (successes) to the number of ways it cannot occur (failures).

VocabularyCompound event is made up of two or more simple events.

Joint probability is the probability of compound events.

Independent events are two events where the outcome of one event does not affect the outcome of the other.

To find the probability of independent events, multiply the probability of the 1st event with the probability of the 2nd event.

A bag contain 6 black marbles, 9 blue marbles, 4 yellow marbles and 2 green marbles. A marble is selected, replaced, and a second marble is drawn. Find the probability of:  P(blue, green)

Find the probability of:  P(not black, blue)

Dependent events: when the outcome of one event affects the outcome of another event.

If a marble, after drawn, was not placed back into the bag, then drawing a second marble depends on what marble was drawn first.

Compliment of a set:  the set of all objects that do not belong to the given set.

the compliment of drawing a heart in a standard deck of cards is drawing a diamond, club, or spade.

The probability of drawing a heart is   and the probability of not drawing a heart is

Find the probability: P(two, five, not a five)

Find the probability: P(heart, not a heart, heart) Mutually exclusive events  events that cannot occur at the same time.

Can you find the probability of drawing a heart or a diamond? Since a card cannot be both a heart and a diamond, the events are mutually exclusive.

When determining the probability of events that are not mutually exclusive, you may count the intersection of the events twice since it occurs in both events.  It only actually occurs once.
