We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people as the traditional custodians of the land upon which this parish church stands.

WELCOME TO CHRIST CHURCH

Today’s mass is celebrated in a church with very few people present, only those who are assisting with the liturgy, and then ‘keeping their distance’ with love. Others will be watching at home, and will have the ‘reserved sacrament’ with them so they can communicate at the appropriate time in the service. Others will be watching at home and will make a spiritual communion when the time comes. Others will not be able to watch the service, but will spend time following the service paper and then either make their communion with the reserved sacrament or make a spiritual communion. Wherever you are, and however you share in worship today, we are united by the Spirit of the Lord as one company of believers with Christians everywhere. If you are watching try less to ‘watch’ the screen as you might a television programme. Enter into the service … say the prayers … sing the hymns!

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS

Tune: Cwm Rhondda

A brief fanfare is played on the organ and the bells which have been silent since Thursday evening are rung as we sing the ancient hymn of Joy:

Glory be to God in heaven, songs of joy and peace we bring, thankful hearts and voices raising, to creation’s Lord we sing: Lord, we thank you, Lord, we bless you, glory be to God our King, glory be to God our King.

Lamb of God, who on your shoulders bore the load of this world’s sin, only Son of God the Father, you have brought us peace within: Lord, have mercy, Christ, have mercy, now your glorious reign begin, now your glorious reign begin.

You, O Son of God, are holy you we praise with one accord; none in heav’n or earth is like you, only you are Christ the Lord, with the Father, and the Spirit ever worshipped and adored, ever worshipped and adored.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Let us pray

Holy God, whose risen Son opened the disciples’ hearts to understand the Scriptures that told of his death and resurrection: grant us the peace of the living Lord, that our eyes may be opened to recognise him in the breaking of the bread, and to follow him wherever he leads; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen

MINISTRY OF THE WORD

A READING FROM THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE COLOSSIANS

3: 1-4

So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

For the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL HYMN

1. The Day of Resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad; The Passover of gladness, The Passover of God! From death to life eternal, From earth unto the sky, Our Christ hath brought us over With hymns of victory.

2. Our hearts be pure from evil, That we may see aright The Lord in rays eternal Of resurrection-light; And, listening to his accents, May hear so calm and plain His own ‘All hail,’ and, hearing, May raise the victor strain.

3. Now let the heavens be joyful! Let earth the song begin! Let the round world keep triumph, And all that is therein! Let all things seen and unseen Their notes in gladness blend, For Christ the Lord hath risen, Our joy that hath no end.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Christ our paschal lamb has been sacri1ced for us; let us feast with joy in the Lord.

THE HOLY GOSPEL

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

28: 1-10

After the sabbath, as the 1rst day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was cruci1ed. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, ‘He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ This is my message for you.” So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshipped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

All sit.

SERMON

Bishop Lindsay

After the sermon, Bishop Lindsay introduces the renewal of promises and the paschal candle is carried to the font as the litany of the saints is sung:

God the Father, have mercy on us God the Son, have mercy on us God the Holy Spirit, have mercy on us Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us St Michael and all the angels, pray for us Holy patriarchs and prophets, pray for us St Joseph, pray for us

Page 7: 12 April 2020 Easter Day VIDEO SERVICE … · Churchwardens Ms Gillian Thyer gillianthyer@gmail.com Ms Cecilia Fairlie ceciliafairlie@gmail.com ... St Michael and all the angels,

St John the Baptist, pray for us St Peter and St Paul, pray for us St John the Evangelist, pray for us St Mary and Martha, pray for us St Anna and St Simeon, pray for us St Simon, pray for us St Barnabas, pray for us St Andrew, pray for us St Matthias, pray for us St Thomas, pray for us St Philip, pray for us St James the Great, pray for us St James the Less, pray for us St Thaddeus, pray for us St Bartholomew, pray for us St Mary Magdalen, pray for us Our Lady of Walsingham, pray for us.

When the ministers have arrived at the font, Bishop Lindsay pours water into it and then adds some water from the holy well at Walsingham which acts as a blessing.

Dear brothers and sisters, in baptism, through the mystery of Christ’s death and resurrection we also have died and been buried with Christ, so that we may rise with him to new life. It is a long tradition among the Christians to use the opportunity of the annual remembrance of the death and resurrection of our Saviour to renew the moment when with repentance and our declaration of faith we were immersed in the living waters of holy baptism. I invite all of you present with me, and those who are sharing in this service online, to renew the promises that were made then, when you rejected Satan and all his works and promised to serve God faithfully as a member of his holy catholic church.

And so I ask you:

Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God? I reject them

Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil? I renounce them.

Do you repent of the sins that separate you from God and your neighbour?

I repent of them.

Do you turn afresh to Christ as Saviour? I turn to him.

Do you submit afresh to Christ as Lord? I submit to Christ.

Do you come again to Christ who is the way, the truth and the life? I come to Christ.

Page 8: 12 April 2020 Easter Day VIDEO SERVICE … · Churchwardens Ms Gillian Thyer gillianthyer@gmail.com Ms Cecilia Fairlie ceciliafairlie@gmail.com ... St Michael and all the angels,

8

May Almighty God who has rekindled your desire to follow Christ give you the strength to continue in the Way.

Now dear friends in Christ I ask you to profess the faith of the Church:

Do you believe in God the Father who made the world? I believe and trust in him.

Do you believe in his Son, Jesus Christ, who redeemed our human race? I believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God?

I believe and trust in him.

THE PEACE

Christ is risen. Alleluia! Alleluia! He is risen indeed, Alleluia, Alleluia

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise

All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, ever-living God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. By his death on the cross, he offered the one true sacrifice for sin, and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. And now we give you thanks that you raised him to life triumphant, and exalted him in glory. By his victory over death, the reign of sin is ended, a new day has dawned, a broken world is restored and we are made whole once more. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, forever praising you and singing:

Page 10: 12 April 2020 Easter Day VIDEO SERVICE … · Churchwardens Ms Gillian Thyer gillianthyer@gmail.com Ms Cecilia Fairlie ceciliafairlie@gmail.com ... St Michael and all the angels,

10

All may kneel or sit.

The celebrant continues the prayer which now recalls the Last Supper and the invitation from Jesus to remember his death and resurrection in the gift of Holy Communion.

Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit,

The sanctuary bell is rung.

we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ’s body and blood. On the night he was betrayed, Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’

The sanctuary bell and church bell are rung.

After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant, shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

The sanctuary bell and church bell are rung.

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:

Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup his one perfect and suf1cient sacri1ce for the sins of the whole world.

Renew us by your Holy Spirit, unite us in the body of your Son, and bring us with all your people into the joy of your eternal kingdom;

Page 11: 12 April 2020 Easter Day VIDEO SERVICE … · Churchwardens Ms Gillian Thyer gillianthyer@gmail.com Ms Cecilia Fairlie ceciliafairlie@gmail.com ... St Michael and all the angels,

11

Through him, with him, in him, united in the Holy Spirit, all glory and honour is yours O Lord, Almighty Father, Amen, Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are con1dent to pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

The celebrant breaks the Host in silence.

AGNUS DEI

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his Supper.

Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed

Page 12: 12 April 2020 Easter Day VIDEO SERVICE … · Churchwardens Ms Gillian Thyer gillianthyer@gmail.com Ms Cecilia Fairlie ceciliafairlie@gmail.com ... St Michael and all the angels,

12

When the sanctuary bell is rung, those who have the reserved sacrament with them in their homes are invited to receive it reverently.

Those who are making a spiritual communion will then be led in one of the following prayers:

At thy feet O Jesus I prostrate myself before thee with an unworthy yet contrite heart, humbled, yet longing to be in your eucharistic presence. I love the gift of yourself offered to me in this great and Blessed Sacrament. Though unable to receive this food for my journey, I desire all the graces that this encounter with you can bring, and offer my heart afresh as a place where you might dwell. While I wait for the day when I shall again have the joy of sacramental communion, I trust in your desire to abide in me, and wish to possess thee in spirit. Come to my heart, Lord Jesus, There is room in my heart for thee.

Or

Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you, body and blood, soul and divinity. Since I cannot at this time receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you or from the community of your church, and lead me with all your holy people to your banquet in heaven. Amen

Once you have received communion or made your spiritual communion. spend some time in reflection.

You might nd it helpful to use the following prayer in thanksgiving:

Risen Lord, in praise of your glory, I unite myself with the Easter song of the 1rst ones who experienced your presence on that 1rst and glorious day. As I have received your blessing this morning in the gift of the Holy Eucharist, may this strong food, the sign of your promise and presence, deepen my love for you, make me more like you, and give me a new courage to serve you. Amen

REGINA CÆLI

Sung to the tune of ‘Jesus Christ is risen today’

Joy to thee, O Queen of Heaven. Alleluia! He whom Thou wast meet to bear. Alleluia! As he promised hath arisen. Alleluia! Pour for us to God thy prayer. Alleluia!

Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, Alleluia. For the Lord is risen indeed, Alleluia.

O God, who by the resurrection of thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ has brought joy to the whole world; grant that with the help of the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen

As the celebrant and attendants leave the church, the nal verse of the great Easter hymn is sung:

No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of Life; Life is nought without thee: aid us in our strife, Make us more than conquerors through thy deathless love; Bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above:

Thine be the glory, risen conquering Son, Endless is the victory, thou o’er death has won.

A HAPPY EASTER TO EVERYONE!

Holy Week has been a strange one this year, yet God has been praised and Christian people all over the world have tried to stay close to the Lord.

We have received some wonderful ‘snaps’ of your ‘go to’ corners for prayer during Holy Week … keep them in place to encourage your ongoing life with the Lord. Look out on the website and in ‘Voice’ for examples.

Many thanks to those who have contributed to the online liturgies of the past week: the vicarage household, those who have prepared the service papers, our musicians, those who have acted as ministers of the sacrament and ‘delivered’ hosts to those who are at home.

Extra miles have been walked ...

NEXT SUNDAY

There will be an online mass at 10.00 am with the opportunity for spiritual communion.

Those who wish to collect the consecrated sacrament can call at the vicarage on Friday afternoon: 2-5 pm or Saturday: 10-1 and 3-8 pm

Those who would like it delivered, please contact +Lindsay or Deacon Kate or a member of the congregation who you know is willing

to provide this blessing for you.

Keep you eyes out for ‘Voice from the Vicarage’ keeping you updated with news.

WEEKLY BIBLE READINGS

You are invited to turn to these bible readings each day, knowing that many people in the parish and wider Church

will be reflecting on the same passages. It’s a good way to stay close to the Lord and his Word throughout the week ahead.
