The community assaulted the deceased and when the police and EMS arrived at the scene, they found the deceased badly beaten. 2 Boys drowned Police car chaseKgosietsile Makoti (3) and Ore-gomoditswe (5) went missing on Wednesday (27/03/2013) were found dead after drowning in a canal in Oukasie, Brits. The two boys were last seen playing outside but they never made it home.

The cases was reported to the police and a neighborhood search by

community members was conducted. One aged 5 was found dead on Thurs-day (28/03/2013) in a canal near Oukasie, Brits. Hartbeespoortdam Dam Police divers removed the body around 14:00 pm in the afternoon. The other body of a 3 year-old boy was found on Saturday (30/03/2013) in Kleinfontein Dam.

EMS declared the two boys died through drowning.

Two cases of inquest were opened and investigation proceeds as to find these poor kids fell into the canal (water). Brits Police are warning parents to be vigilant about the whereabouts of their kids especially when they are playing on the street. Parents should not allow their kids to go swimming without their supervision. The community came in numbers to pay their last respects and to offer their support to the affected families. The two boys were laid to rest on Thursday (04/04/2013)

The Executive Mayor Poppy Magongwa has conveyed her condolences to the two families and has sent a heartfelt messages to the whole community, “one life lost is one too many, and losing two kids in one community is just too sad. We urge parents to ensure that kids do not play next to these canals and the community should work as a collective and look out for each other in order to ensure that these accidents do not happen,” she said. She also expressed that the municipality is working together with the national Department of Water and Environmental affairs to come up with interventions to ensure safety from those canals.

The department will embark on aware-ness campaigns that will teach and in-form communities about the dangers of canals and how to avoid possible acci-dents and drowning for both adults and kids. Communities around Madibeng, especially areas that have water canals will also benefit from the department as they intend to install swimming pools in future where children can be taught how to swim and react in water. Wall grids will be placed in canals as an immediate intervention that will be put in place to minimize these accidents.

The office of Minister Edna Molewa has also sent a message of condolence to the two families.

Robbery with danger car trace and possession of illegal fire-arms

Brits police and four suspects exchanged fire on Tuesday

(02/04/2013) around 09:45 am in Bokfontein, Brits. The four men were driving in a White Golf 6. During the crossfire, one of the TRT (Tactical Response Team) members Const Atang Selokelo (35) sustained minor injuries on his left arm and right side of the head. He was admitted at Brits Medi-Clinic and discharged the very same day.

It is alleged that the suspects were driving from Rustenburg direction (N4 Road) to Brits chased by Rustenburg and Mooinooi police. There was a com-munication network between Rusten-burg and Brits police alleging that the suspects committed a robbery at Rusten-burg. When the suspects realized that police were after them, they ran away.

However, Brits police made an ambush following the tip off from Rustenburg police, after spotting the suspects’ vehi-cle. The suspects changed the direction after noticing that the Brits police were on them. They (suspects) fled from of the vehicle and started to fire at the po-lice as they were armed. Unfortunately suspects managed to run away as there is no one arrested at this point. Police are still searching for the suspects in the bushes nearby Bokfontein area. How-ever the suspects’ vehicle is under police eye after the suspects have abandoned and vanished into the bushes during the crossfire.

Cartridges, two firearms pistols, and three cell phones were found in the vehi-cle where one of the firearms recovered belonged to the South African Police Service. The firearm was taken to bal-listic department in Pretoria to detect out to whom the firearm belonged to and where, how was lost to the hands of criminals later. There will be more added charges against the suspects due to the items found in the scene of crime. Investigation proceeds.

Any positive information is welcome to the police that can assist in the arrest of the suspects. Please contact Brits Detective Police on 012 381 6035. Your support in stopping crime is appreciable in advance.

A study indicates that South Af-ricans are loosing faith in Trade Unions.

The study revealed that thirty per-cent of black South Africans said

they distrusted trade Unions in 2012, compared to 21%in 2011, while 53% of colored South Africans said they distrusted unions compared to 37% in 2011. Congress of South African Trade Union [COSATU], General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi seemed to agree with the report, “ our own survey last year also revealed some very negative per-spectives, for instance about corruption in unions” Vavi said.

Vavi is facing allegations of corruption and is being investigated by COSATU, it is alleged that he benefited in selling of the old COSATIU house when they moved to new premises in Braamfon-tein, Johannesburg. During illegal strikes in the mining sector last year, many workers voiced dissatisfactions with their trade Unions leaders accusing them of being too close to management and will-ing to compromise workers demand.COSATU’s biggest Labour Union Na-tional Union Of Mine Workers [NUM], lost Union office to The Association of Mineworkers Union [AMCU] at Impala Platinum Mine in Rustenburg last year. The attitudinal data from the South African Social Attitudes Survey [SA-SAS], conducted a survey were respond-

ents said they had great confidence in religious institutions such as churches than Trade Unions. Study reveals that distrust is significantly lower among Black Africans than among the colored, White or Indians population.

Distrust of Unions has grown from 21% to 35% among Black Africans and to 53% among colored population in 2012, according to the South African Social Attitudes Survey.

THARI SOON TO OPERATE NEW BUSES FROM BRITS TO ...

Premier Modise calls for suspension of driver license

The commuters of Thari Bus Ser-vice in Lethabong will soon have new buses operating from Brits to Lethabong.

This is after the community con-sulted the management of the bus

service, about the poor service they are being offered by Thari. Operational Manager of Thari Koos Mosue con-firmed that there will be new buses for Lethabong “ the implementation is still pending we are awaiting few documents from the company we sub-contracted after that we will look into them and it will be all system go” Mosue said.

The name of the company that sub-contracted under Thari is called vilot- Rustenburg Coach Links [RCL].“ We in the last phase of implementing these, however nothing has been final-ized yet and even the commuters have not being informed even though they do know about the new buses we are yet to formally handover the buses to the new

company” Mosue said. Mosue said that the new company will do the operations under the monitoring of Thari, mean-ing bus fees and time schedules will not change. Six buses are expected to oper-ate with one spare bus when the new company takes over. In a community meeting on the 21 March ward coun-cilor Joyce-Mashishi-Ntsime assured the commuters that all their problems with Thari will be sorted out and they will get better service from the bus company.Thari was invited to the meeting but could not make it.

However the seem to be improvement in terms of the problem that were raised in the meeting concerning bus opera-tions from Lethabong to Rustenburg.

“ I am very delighted to tell you that the presence of Mr Pieterse and Mr Dipholo has also made a huge impact in terms of operation improvements. Chris Modisane said. They are visible, shows flexibility and Support”. In responding

to the facilities in the bus rank Mosue said it is the responsibility of the Mu-nicipality, however they are in talks with the municipality to renovate and repair the facility.

Road Traffic law enforcement au-thorities should consider immedi-ate suspension of driver licenses of drunk motorists involved in road crashes in which lives are lost, North West Premier Thandi Modise said in reaction to the arrest of a 35-year-old driver for drunken driving following a crash

that claimed five lives on Monday in Ledig near Sun City.

“Driver behaviour still accounts for most crashes and road fatalities

and should be dealt with harsher be-cause one death on our road is a death too many,” highlighted Premier Modise “We wish to convey our condolences to

the families of the 16 road users who lost their lives across the province over the Easter Long weekend and appeal for motorists to support the Decade of Action for Road Safety by sharing the road responsibly with other road users,” added Modise.

Five road users said to be between the ages of 21 and 30 were reportedly certi-fied dead at the scene of the accident which occurred around 4 am. The arrested motorist is expected to appear in the Mogwase Magistrates Court on Tuesday on charges of culpable homi-cide and drunken driving.

12 April 2013

Alcohol abuse has become the way of life for the youth today. Can we blame it on the lack of activities or on plain irrespon-sibility? Weekends are times where you’ll see them flock-ing on streets, proudly holding alcohol products in their hands. 16 year-olds are already being exposed to alcohol.

People have different reasons why they consume alcohol. Many times

one can reach for a drink to relax after a long day, change how they feel, forget about personal problems (drown sorrows as some say) and for fun. Apart from the temporary positive impact alcohol can have, it can cause numerous health problems in the long run.On www.drinkaware.co.uk website, it says mental effects of alcohol differ from person to person depending on how much they drink and for how long they’ve been drinking. Occasional drink-ers experience feelings of relaxation and an energizing release of shyness. Mod-erate drinkers will come across feelings of nervousness, sadness, irritation and some relationship problems, while heavy drinkers will be faced with insomnia, paranoia and hallucinations. Many people drink to make their problems go away, but unfortunately alcohol offers a temporary escape. Alcohol is a depressant that decreases brain activity within a person’s nervous

system. According to Health24 website (10 September 2010) the health risks include cirrhosis (hardening) of the liver, gastrointestinal problems, damage to the heart muscle and impaired muscle functioning. Heavy drinkers often tend to miss meals or lack adequate diets and therefore suffer nutritional imbalance and have an impaired immune system.

Prolonged intake of alcohol can result in brain damage. This can occur as a result of a vitamin B2 deficiency. A well-known condition, Korsakov’s syndrome, is an amnesic disorder which means that people find it difficult to remember past events and to learn new things. Alcoholism can also lead to impotence in men, damage to the fetus in pregnant women and an elevated risk of cancer of the larynx, esophagus, stomach, pancreas and upper gastrointestinal tract. Women cannot tolerate alcohol as well as men and are more vulnerable to alcohol related health risks than men. The psychological effects of alcohol intoxication include lack of inhibitions, increase in aggression and violence, uninhibited sexual behavior/lack of interest in sex, mood swings, depression, impaired memory and sensory-motor co-ordination. In the Fatal Crashes per month report, compiled by Arrive Alive (www.arrivealive.co.za) reports that in March 2012, North West Province had 54 crashes, where 23 pedestrians, 30 passengers and 29 drivers lost their lives

on the road. In some of the accidents, reckless driving and drunk driving may have been the cause. We have seen news reports about people that have lost their lives due to drunk driving. One may ponder that alcohol adverts are also playing a role in encouraging people to drink. Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi wants t ban alcohol advertis-ing. He is quoted saying he will present Parliament with a [draft] legislation “next week”.

He was speaking at the launch of Health Systems Trust medical publica-tion on Tuesday. He has urged doctors and academics to support him in his plan to stop the marketing of alcohol beverages. Professor Charles Parry of the Medical Research Council says:

• 130 people in SA die each day because

of alcohol abuse. Causes of deaths include road accidents, liver diseases, some cancers and HIV - as alcohol pro-motes risky sexual behaviour;• Alcohol abuse is estimated to cost the country R38bn a year. This is much more than R2bn spent on alcohol ad-vertising; and• The World Health Organisation esti-mates that lifestyle diseases will become the biggest killer and health expense by 2020 worldwide. The price increase of alcohol won’t make any difference, as people don’t mind to dig deeper into their pockets to buy the most expensive type of drinks. Buying alcohol from over the counter doesn’t make it any less of an addictive drug. Is there a thing called responsible drink-ing? It starts with not driving under the influence of alcohol.

Due to the landscape of Oukasie Township, there has been a lot of challenges due to storm water more especially during rainy seasons. Communities around that area have experienced a lot of problems because storm water causes uncontrolled streams of water within their settlements and also there was a continuous leaking irrigation canal running inside the township. Therefore such challenges resulted in the community choosing such a project as a priority need during the IDP public participation process.

MIG funding approved the project for an amount of R54 000 000 to cover the entire Oukasie township. The scope of the approved plan was to upgrade the current storm water network and to surface gravel roads in order to protect soil erosion. The appointed engineers, Manes Consulting Engineers will be responsible for the planning, designing and project management for the entire project and will be constructed in phases.

In the current phase for 2012/13 nancial year the Municipality has appointed Unity Construction as a contractor for this project, and the scope to be covered by Unity construction is to construct 3.7km of internal streets and associated storm water drainage facilities. The contractor has currently contracted three emerging local contractors as sub contractors on the project and a total of 43 locals have been employed in this phase. The envisaged completion date for the current phase is 30th of May 2013.

“These developments will be accepted around the township as there will no longer be an outcry of water streams and storm water problems” said the locals when contacted to comment on the project.

Brits – Brits District Hospital has been the brand that various organizations across Madibeng Local Municipality have joined forces with to render a quality and comprehensive health care and one of that organization is Association of Women Ministry, which came to the Hospital on the 4th April 2013 to pray for healing of the patients as well as giving them needed gifts.

This ministry, which is a collective of various denominations, whole-

heartedly donated items such as bath towels, deodorants, bath soaps, tooth-pastes, tissues, washing cloths and etc to patients.

“We are here to showcase our so-cial solidarity towards the vision of the hospital in a form of prayer and donations,” said the chairperson of the association Mrs M. S. Tlhaletoe

She went on to say that Brits District Hospital should be seen as the place of healing and one of the ways to achieve that is through prayer. Repre-senting the CEO of the hospital, Mrs Elizabeth Kuscus (Nursing Services Manager) thanked the association for demonstrating their efforts to work with the hospital to build a healthy people or a community.

“Your association has put into prac-tice the President Jacob Zuma’s call for working together towards doing and achieving more,” Kuscus said in jubilation as she received the donation from the association on behalf of the Brits District Hospital’s management. In the same vein, a month back Brits Hospital opened its Paeds ward for Brits Nandos staff and management to brighten the admitted kids day with various gifts.

Perpetrators of sexual violence against the vulnerable, particu-larly elderly women should have no place in society, North West Premier Thandi Modise said on Sunday.

Expressing shock about the rape of a 92 year old Mmakau granny,

who was allegedly repeated raped in the early hours of Sunday morning, Premier Modise reiterated her ear-lier call for intensified united action against crime and the scourge of rape.“When the elderly are living in fear of being raped by children old enough to be their grandchildren in some instances, society should stand up to stamp the tide of the scourge of rape and say enough is enough,” said Modise. The Premier added that crime was eroding the moral fibre and needs to be fought on all fronts. She also called on the community to

assist police in their investigations to ensure that the perpetrator responsible for the heinous crime is behind bars.Modise also called on crime preven-tion structures such as Community Policing Forums, street committees and neighbourhood watch to look into providing elderly women who are staying on their own with whistles which they could blow to alert their neighbourhood of the threat of the scourge of rape and other crimes in their homes.According to police, the perpetrator had forcefully broken the granny’s front door which was chain locked in order to gain entry. Spokesperson for the North West Police, Captain Adele Myburgh said the man repeat-edly raped the woman for three hours before fleeing on foot. Myburgh said that the elderly woman who was severely traumatised was taken to hospital.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union has embarked on a go slow to press for the res-ignation of the Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga and the Director-General of the Education department Bobby Soobrayan.

This comes when schools re-opened for the second term be-

ginning of this week. General Secre-tary of SADTU Mugwana Maluleke said teachers will report for duty and teach but will not do any extra work such as attending departmental work-shops, marking of tests or supplemen-tary exams and working after hours.

The Union have since last year called for the resignation of the Minister and the D-G, it has raised issues of lack of leadership and guidance by the Minister and not attending to prob-lems within the department. Some of the issues SADTU raised concerning Motshekga are state of Education in Eastern Cape is deteriorating even further where learners continue to learn on mud schools and dilapidat-ing schools. The failure to deliver textbooks in time in Limpopo and lack of her intervention when commu-nity denied Northern Cape learners education when they protested against service delivery, are the issues raised by the teacher’s union. The minister is failing the nation and she continues to undermine collective bargaining,

her leadership is affecting the quality of education, Maluleke said. SADTU have threatened to go on a nation wide strike if Education is made an essential service, this was the call made at the ANC national Conference in Mangaung last year.

However Minister Motshekga held a press briefing on Tuesday to discuss issues of Education in general.Motshekga told reporters on Tuesday that she had yet to be briefed on the effect of the go-slow in schools “I am seriously bothered” she said. “ I’m disappointed about this trend of stake-holders choosing to communicate with the Basic Education Minister through the media statement. We are always committed and available to meet and discuss any concerns raised by unions as we regularly do,” said Motshekga.

The North West Provincial Ex-ecutive Council (Exco) has re-solved to invoke Section 139(1) b of the constitution in Matlosana, Maquassi Hills and Ditsobotla Local Municipality. The decision to intervene in the three mu-nicipalities was taken at an Exco meeting held in Mahikeng on Wednesday.

The intervention in the three municipalities were informed by

assessments that were conducted by the Provincial Department of Local Government & Traditional Affairs in terms of the local government turna-round strategy that determined the municipalities were dysfunctional in certain areas and needed to be sup-ported and strengthened to rescue them from collapse. In terms of the resolution by Exco, the provincial government will as-

sume all executive powers of council and administration as prescribed in Section 44 and 49 of the Local Gov-ernment Municipal Structures Act as Maquassi Hills and Ditsobotla Local Municipalities are on the verge of col-lapse and unable to render services to residents and perform their duties and obligations due to lack of capacity and maladministration. The intervention in Matlosana will be limited to control of finances. Admin-istrators and experts will be deployed to the three municipalities during the period of intervention which is expect-ed to last for a period of six months and a maximum of twelve months. An analysis by the provincial depart-ment of Local Government and Traditional Affairs revealed that Motlasana Local municipality had failed to honour its statutory, financial obligations and incurred a long-stand-ing debt with Eskom and MiDVAAL

water board which resulted in two bulk services accounts being in arrears in excess of R100 million has been experiencing serious administrative and financial challenges for the past two years because:· The municipality is not collect-ing what is due for services rendered to consumers-the debtors book is standing at about R960 million.· There is non-enforcement of debt collection and credit control poli-cies as adopted by council.· The municipality is using the revenue from the sale of electricity to subsidise other services that consum-ers are not paying for such as water services.· The municipality has numerous contractual obligations with consult-ants for services such as debt collec-tion, meter reading, and other services that could be done internally.· There is a lack of management

and leadership capacity in the Budget and Treasury Office resulting in poor financial management and administra-tion of the municipality’s finances. The Exco resolution for Intervention in Madibeng Local Municipality taken in July 2012 was stalled for imple-mentation pending the outcome of an investigation into allegation of corrup-tion and maladministration instituted by Minister of Cooperative Govern-ance and Traditional Affairs.A meeting between Premier Thandi Modise, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Richard Baloyi and the Acting MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Paul Sebegoe is scheduled to take place next week Tuesday to receive the Minister’s report on the investigation and determine a way-forward on Madibeng.

We meet on a Sunday after-noon at the post office. From what I observe he seems shy or maybe he’s holding back. Green stripped golf shirt and sneakers, cap, tight track pants and beads as accessory.

He sits on the far end of the “stoep”, head hunched in be-

tween his knees, reflecting. “ We lived in a four roomed house, my older brother was schooling at Wits Univer-sity. My mom was unemployed. We all depended on the profits my father made from his bricks business,” said Sipho “Mac Lopez” Nkwane.

Born on the 22nd of May 1990, to Maria and Asiel Nkwane, he is the fifth child of seven from Legonyane. Mac Lopez had hopes of being a soccer player. That was until he developed passion for music. “I was in Grade 8. I was also a dancer; we formed a dance group that performed at school’s shows,” said Mac Lopez.

He says he started going to bashes when he was 16 years old. “My broth-ers would chase me away should they see me there. Looking at Djs doing their thing deepened my love for mu-sic. I started to record mixtapes that played on radio,” explains Mac.

Mac says the first DJ he saw perform-ing live was Patlama, then Micho. “I

had no equipment then. “My cousin Molefe Moeng then hooked me up with Katlego Mahlatsi, who taught me the basics of and introduced me to dj’ing for two months,”

“ In 2006 my brothers friend had faith in me that he borrowed me his music equipment to practice with. From 2006 to 2007, I practiced daily with tronic jams on turntables and cdj. My luck changed when I bumped into DJ Micho at a wedding in Legonyane,” recalled Mac.

This is a tale that Mac will never stop telling. The beginning…”They were looking for a cdj for a gig in Jericho, I had one. I went with them at Ultra Chill of Cuba and DJ Micho squeezed me in his set. It was the first time I played for a crowd. My first gig! The pub’s owner Kakaps gave me a 30 minutes chance. I was very short. I had to climb on top of the crates to reach the turntables,”

Mac says he took everyone by surprise. “It was a perfect set. Then Kakaps organized a special event to promote me. He played a significant role, he believed in me,” said Mac.

He says he had a rigid support struc-ture from his family.

We can say the rest is history. He got booked for more gigs. He is not only

a DJ; with DJs Klaas and Godsend’s mentoring, he can produce as well because he “got tired of playing other people’s songs”. He has produced eight tracks for people.

“I started playing dance music, 2011 while living in Pretoria. I approached Khuze, he owns Café del Khuze in Sunny side. I asked to play at his place. He was blown away. After my set he told me “Psyfonic” don’t suit me. He gave me the name “Mac Lopez” and it gained popularity”

At age 23, there is no stopping Mac Lopez. He has goals that he is working

towards. He wants to own his studio, record label, become an international DJ.

“My turning point was at a concert in Pretoria Show Grounds. I was in the line up with the biggest names in the country; Culoe de Song, Shimza, Euphonik, Teargas, Black Motion amongst others. It was a confirmation that music is what I wanted to do,” says Mac Lopez

AfriForum has called on the City of Matlosana Municipality to take action and remedy the bad management of the local land-fill site. This follows complaints received from the local commu-nity.

According to Bill Lillie, chairper-son of the AfriForum Klerksdorp

branch, the landfill poses a severe environmental and health risk. ”There are several factors that give rise to environmental pollution and health concerns. Residents who live near the site are affected by pollution and odours, and farm animals have died after waste spilled over from the site,” Lillie said. (See photo attached.)

AfriForum has sent a letter to the Mu-nicipality, requesting action to remedy the situation. “The Municipality is not complying with permit conditions and we had to intervene,” Lillie added. The pollution can be attributed to bad management. “In terms of the Na-tional Environmental Waste Manage-ment Act No 59 of 2008, the permit

holder is primarily and ultimately accountable for the landfill and any effect it may have on the surrounding environment,” Lillie said. AfriForum will continue to monitor the situation and criminal charges are being considered.

North West Premier Thandi Modise has expressed shock and called for justice following the rape of a three-year-old girl at Umzomhle in Orkney.

Premier Modise expressed concern that the mother of the little girl

had allegedly not taken the appropri-ate action of reporting the incident to the police or presented her for medical examination soon after the incident.“We hope that the omission to report the matter to the police before she purportedly went to the clinic and ultimately walked away before her daughter was examined had nothing to do with protecting the perpetrator responsible for the ghastly act who should be behind bars. Though we sympathise with her for the ordeal that her daughter experienced, a person

of her age should have known better and acted so as not to jeopardise the case,” stressed the Premier.Modise called on parents in the light of infants and minors affected by the scourge of rape to be vigilant, not to leave their children with strangers even if it’s for a short period and to check them for injuries or strange behaviour particu-larly when they return from crèches, day care centres and other home care arrangements.

She called for counselling and other psychological services to be provided to the child to assist her deal with the trauma. According to police the mother of the minor alleged that she left the victim at her neighbour’s house and went to work over five weeks ago, on Thursday 21 February 2013. On her return from work, the girl report-

edly told her mother that her genitals were painful. The mother is said to have noticed a white substance and Vaseline on the private parts of the victim when she was bathing her and took the child to a local clinic but left before the nurses could attend to them because there were many people in the queue. Sergeant Kelebogile Moiloa of the North West Police confirmed that Social Workers would investigate and determine if the 28-year-old mother should be charged with child neglect as the case was only reported this past Sunday.

Moiloa said that though no one has been arrested at this stage, police took the child to the clinic for medical examination and they are still waiting for the results.

The lives of the thirteen mem-bers of the South African Na-tional Defence Force who fell in battle in the Central African Republic were not dedicated to conflict or death but to com-passion and life, North West Premier Thandi Modise said at the memorial service held in honour of Private Karabo Edwin Matsheka and Vusumzi in Mma-batho on Thursday.

Premier Modise in paying tribute to the soldiers hailed them as heroes

who were committed to something greater than themselves and had mustered the physical and moral cour-age to accomplish extraordinary feats in battle. Modise said that they were ordinary men who rose to meet seem-ingly impossible odds and did extraor-dinary things for the nation.“These brave men left the safety and comfort of our land in making sure that peace is attained in the Central African Republic (CAR).We join the nation in saluting and honouring them for the supreme sacrifice they have

paid for the achievement of Peace in the continent,” the Premier empha-sised. Modise said as a country we must always remember them and pay tribute to the stories of the heroes.“We cannot return those who have gone, however we can and we will cherish the virtue of their sacrifice in thought and deed to educate our nation and our children in their spirit; to love with all our might our beloved South Africa, to take pride in it and work ceaselessly towards progress,” she added.

The Speaker of the Provincial Legis-lature, Supra Mahumapelo and Victor Tsie who represented the South Afri-can Military Veterans Association also hailed the fallen heroes as role models and gallant fighters. Keresepe Moncho representing the two families conveyed the appreciation that the families are receiving from the South African De-fence Force and North West provincial government which is also supporting the Matsheka and Ngaleka families to meet costs towards the funerals of the two heroes. In recognition of 28-

year- old Private Matsheka’s gallantry, Kgosi Jeff Montshioa of the Barolong Boo-Ratshidi Traditional Council has allocated a burial site at Maphacwe Cemetery reserved for Barolong Boo-Ratshidi Chiefs and the honour that

his funeral service to commence at 7:00 am tomorrow will be held at the Tribal Kgotla. Private Ngaleka is to be also buried tomorrow in Khayelisha in the Western Cape.

The trial of two men accused of murdering dairy farmer David Hall continues in the Potchef-stroom High Court today. Hall and his wife, Bernadette, were attacked on their farm outside Fochville on 20 February last year. Mr Hall was gunned down and killed. His wife was severely assaulted in the attack.

Civil rights organisation AfriForum is attending the court proceedings

to support the Hall family. According to Reg Crewe, Head of Community Safety at AfriForum, it is becoming apparent, as the facts unfold, that robbery is not the main motive for the attack. Crewe says the Hall family deserves justice in court. “The reality is that

Bernadette has been traumatised by being forced to relive that day. We expect that justice will prevail, and de-mand the most severe punishment for these two alleged murderers. We also expect the police to continue to hunt down their three accomplices, and bring them to justice,” Crewe said. The two accused, Paulos Moloi (33) and Amos Nyangiwe (29) face pos-sible life sentences if convicted of the murder, and extra time for the other charges ranging from assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm to the possession of an unlicensed fire-arm and ammunition. To date, Police Minister, Nathi Mthethwa, has steadfastly refused the request by AfriForum to prioritize farm attacks and set up specialist pro-

tection units for rural communities, as he had done with other crimes such as rhino poaching and cable theft.

Brits District Hospital in part-nership with the Madibeng Sub District developed a protocol for rape that is aiming at assisting South African Police Services with speedy processing of fo-rensic evidence and moreover ensuring that the patients re-ceive adequate medical care to mitigate trauma.

According to Brits District Hospi-tal Acting Clinical Manager, Dr

Chikere Orji the protocol for rape stakeholders including SAPS (Sexual Assault unit) have met and explored the logic behind this unique protocol. “Our Hospital casualty tends to be a lot more busy at night thus if we get a vehicle accident casualties just after a doctor has started to attend to a rape patient, this could mean that those vehicle accident patients will have to wait for an hour or so before the doctor is finished with only one rape patient,” Dr Orji expressed

It was against such developments that protocol for rape was developed and agreed by the most senior doctors to ensure that lives are safe as well as rape victims are given the adequate medical care. The protocol says that the police should bring the client to Brits District Hospital Casualty between 07h00 – 19h00 and take the client to either Bapong Clinic or Letlhabile Clinic between 19h00 – 07h00. The rationale behind this move is that Bapong and Letlhabile

Clinics have medical doctors available 24hours respectively. Moreover unlike Brits Hospital both clinics are not busy at night and they will assist SAPS to process evidence quickly and ensuring that patients receive adequate medical care. The Chief Executive Officer of Brits District Hospital, Mr Themba Mhlanga said that this protocol for rape is one of the reliable practice tools to reduce waiting times in hospi-tal casualty at night to improve patient satisfaction and care.

NEW PROCEDURE FOR RAPE CASES

NWPG intervenes in three municipalities

Municipalities need to align their Integrated Development Plans and strengthen their sup-port for Local War Rooms on Poverty in order to contribute to-wards reduction of poverty and unemployment, the North West Provincial Executive Council (Exco) resolved on Wednesday.

The War on Poverty (WoP) and Comprehensive Rural Devel-

opment Programme (CRDP) were designed to reduce poverty and un-employment in rural areas estimated at 32.46% that affects about 42.06% of young people who constitute the total unemployment population in the province.

The Madibeng Local Municipality is putting up new fencing around the sewage water cleaning plant at the entrance of Brits.

An initiative by Kgosi Motheo Mamogale of the Bakwena Ba Mogopa set up a group of eleven rangers from Bethanie with the duties of patrolling various farms, looking for suspicious activity from criminals.

Their responsibility is to identify illegal snares that could pose

danger to wild animals, illegal hunters (poachers) that violates the hunting laws and regulations. In most cases

these poachers don’t have a hunting license, they illegally sell the animals they killed or their parts to make money and use illegal weapons when hunting. This will result animals being endangered or even extinct. Brits and neighboring areas has be-come playground for criminals, which target farmers. Farm attacks, house invasions; stock and cable theft are some of the activities that the residents suffer from, imposed by criminals.

Saving the world one globe at a time

When the world needs saving, superheroes may get the job done chop-chop. But that is ideal in comic books and movies. Be-ing an environmental hero goes hand in hand with being a good citizen.

Our team compiled a few tips on how to save the environment:• Switch off everything you are not us-ing that uses electricity (geyser, lights)• Leaving devices plugged in can eat up energy. Try unplugging • Instead of drying clothes, hang them on a washing line, it makes clothes smell nice and fresh and it is environ-mentally friendly. Tumble dryers are among the biggest energy users in most households.• Close doors after you leave a room when you leave the house. Try to close doors to all rooms you don’t normally need. This will save a lot of excess heating or cooling that’s need to make your house warm.• Check leaks. If your faucets drip, get them fixed or at least put a container under the drip in the meantime. Turn off water when you are not using it. If you’re brushing your teeth, turn off the faucet between rinses.• Take shorter showers instead of fill-ing the bathtub with water.• Don’t take plastic bags if you don’t need one.

• Use rechargeable batteries instead of disposable ones.• Use only as much toilet paper as you can.• Coordinate recycling with your friends and neighbors. If the local recycling depot is at the same dis-tance, make a single drop-off in your neighborhood where people can bring recyclables, then you can use just one car to drive them to the depot• Don’t waste food. The best way is to use up leftovers and plan your meals so you buy no more than you need.• Stop reading newspapers. If you can look up news on the internet, it takes up less energy than cutting down trees, making paper and transporting it to your house•Plant a tree. They absorb carbon dioxide. If you can’t plant one, try potted plants and preserve indigenous trees.• Make compost. Designate an area in your yard to put your waste; fruit peels and uneaten food. Keep the compost heap far from water source. Put a couple of layers of concrete blocks or bricks around your heap to avoid a mess of your lawn.

Come on, do we really need superhero outfits? Try these simple steps; it will be worthwhile for the environment and you.YOU ARE 1 OF 33 000

Rifleman Karabo Edwin Mat-sheka was celebrated as a hero, role model and a patriot amid shouts of “airborne all the way” at a military/state funeral ser-vice held in honour at the Baro-long Boo-Ratshidi Tribal Kgotla.

Rifleman Matsheka was laid to his fi-nal resting place at the Maphacwe

Heroes Acre in Mahikeng on Saturday. In paying tribute and saluting 28-year-old Matsheka who was granted the honour of being buried alongside the Barolong Boo-Ratshidi chiefs, North West Premier Modise urged poets, sing-ers, writers and dancers to ensure that his name is not forgotten but remem-bered for generations to come. Premier Modise said that the name of Mat-sheka and twelve members of the 44 parachute regiment who fell in Central African Republic would forever be en-graved in the hearts of South Africans as protectors and defenders of peace, stability and democracy not only in their country but across the continent.“South Africa has never wanted to be a big brother on the African continent. As a pioneer for the construction of the Organisation of African Unity into the African Union however, we owe it to the continent to work for the creation of peace, stability and seedlings of develop-ment of the mother continent as it was born in most African countries during years of humiliation and oppression,” Modise reminded the over three thou-sand mourners. In giving an account of the bravery of the thirteen paratroopers who were ambushed by rebels, com-mander Lieutenant Colonel Gopane who represented the 44 parachute regiment based in Bloemfontein said that the heroic departure of the thirteen heroes who fell in CAR will never be re-placed by any form of verbosity in small corners and or in the media; nor by any form of material. “Their departure is

priceless .They have overdone them-selves. They fought for the course of the Republic of South Africa, of which we all are the de facto beneficiaries to these endeavours; not unless if you pay your allegiances to a foreign sovereignty you will make noise,” he stressed.

“Paratroopers don’t die, they regroup in heaven,” de-clared childhood friend, homeboy and colleague Rifle-man Letlhogonolo Maseng in his mes-sage of condolences.Major General Titus Matlakeng in his message of condo-lence said that the South African Na-tional Defence Force will press ahead in pursuit of the peace that guided the ser-vice of the fallen he-

roes. “Their lives speak to the strength, the dignity, the decency of those who serve, and that is how they will be remembered .Let us draw strength and courage in the wake of the loss and sacrifice in line of duty and grieve the

loss of our colleagues, compatriots and friends whilst celebrating their lives in service of the South African nation,” said Matlakeng. In thanking the North West Provincial Government and the South African National Defence Force for their support, Matsheka’s cousin, Keresepe Moncho said that his cousin had a towering proportion of discipline wherever he was and the family will al-ways remember him for his humbleness. Matsheka is survived by his 95 year-old grandmother, 44 year- old- mother, fiancé and a three- year- old son

Bakgatla Ba Mmakau Sports Organization (BBMSO) and Mmakau Football Association (MFA) were proud to present the Bike Riders Easter Week-end Tournament, sponsored by Friends of De Wildt bike riders.

Four local teams from Mmakau participated in the tournament. In

the first game Mmakau Survivors FC played against Leeds United. Mmakau Survivors won 1-0. Mmakau Barce-lona FC played against Naughty Boys FC. Barcelona won 3-1. In the final game, Mmakau Barcelona went up against Survivors FC. It was a tough game as the game reached full time with a score 0 all. The game went to penalties. Barcelona won 5-4 after Obakeng Mokoena missed a penalty.Mmakau Barcelona was awarded with a trophy, gold medals, soccer jersey, soccer ball and R500.00. The goalkeeper and captain of Barelona was nominated the best player of the tournament

“It was a wonderful soccer event since the existence of the organization. We would like to thank Friends of De

Wildt bikers club and Mr. Phaladi Mo-che for their contribution. On behalf of BBMSO and MFA I would like to commend them for positive efforts into the uplifting of our community,” said Andrew Motlogeloa, Chairperson of BBMSO. “On the 27th of April we going to host a sports tournament where various teams of different sport codes (i.e. volley ball, netball and soc-cer) will take part, to celebrate Free-dom Day. We haven’t confirmed the venue yet. The organization is under new management. With the help of God and good Samaritans like Princi-pal Phiri from Malatse Motsepe High School, who connected us with the company Discovery, I believe Mmakau is going to change,” said Motlogeloa.

“ Members of the club have been riding for more than 20 years, and the community has been friendly and welcomed us. As a way to show appreciation, we collect money from the members and use it to support the community. There’s a number of organizations that we’ve assisted,” said Angus Young, member of Friends of De Wildt bikers club.
