OUR 12-DAY/10-NIGHT PORTUGAL & SOUTHERN SPAIN TOUR ITINERARY: DAY 1 – BOSTON~INTERMEDIATE CITY~LISBON: Depart from Boston’s Logan International Airport bound for Lisbon (via intermediate city) on our evening flight, with full meal and beverage service, as well as stereo headsets, available while in flight. DAY 2 – LISBON: Upon arrival at Lisbon Airport, we will meet our Tour Escort, who will help us transfer to our 4-star hotel centrally located in Lisbon. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure. Prior to dinner at the hotel, our group will get together for a Welcome Drink. Dinner and overnight at the hotel. (D) DAY 3 – VILAMOURA~FARO~SEVILLE: After breakfast and hotel check-out, we will leave early for Seville. En route, we will visit Vilamoura, a seaside resort, and Faro, the capital of southern Portugal. The tour then continues across the border to Andalucia, Spain, arriving in Seville in the late afternoon for check-in at our 4-star hotel. Dinner and overnight. (B, D) DAY 4 – SEVILLE: After breakfast, we will take a tour of the magnificent city of Seville, visiting the most important monuments, such as the Alcazar (a splendid example of Mudejar Style), the cathedral (with some of the most important paintings and sculptures in the world), the famous Giralda Tower, and the Parque Maria Luisa. There will also be some free time to shop and explore on our own. This evening, we will be treated to a typical night out in Seville, with dinner and a flamenco show. Overnight. (B, D) DAY 5 – GRANADA: After breakfast, we will be escorted on a full-day trip to splendorous Granada. Here, in the capital of Spain’s last Moorish kingdom, we will visit one of the most outstanding examples of architecture of the period, the Alhambra (below), fortress of the 13 th century ruler Al Ahamar. We will also visit the Water Gardens of the Generalife (the Royal Summer Palace) and the Royal Chapel. Return to Seville for dinner and overnight. (B, D) DAY 6 – CORDOBA: After breakfast, today’s full-day excursion takes us to another of the very important and beautiful cities in the Province of Andalucia – Cordoba! One of the main attractions on our guided city tour is the Mesquita, possibly the greatest and most beautiful mosque ever erected by the Moors. It stands in the middle of the two great areas of Cordoba – the Jewish Quarter and the Moorish Quarter. We will also have some free time to explore this incredible city, browse through the shops and bazaars, or just relax. Return to Seville for dinner and overnight. (B, D) DAY 7 – EVORA~ESTORIL: After breakfast and hotel check-out, we must bid farewell to Seville and Andalucia, and head towards the Portuguese border. En route to Estoril, we will visit one of the most important examples of the Roman Period on the Iberian Peninsula – the walled town of Evora. We will visit the Temple of Diana, the Bones Chapel, and the university. Continuing west, we will drive through the world’s largest cork-growing region and arrive at our 4-star hotel in the seaside town of Estoril, with time to freshen up prior to dinner. Dinner and overnight. (B, D) DAY 8 – LISBON: After breakfast at our hotel, we are off for a visit to Lisbon, the Portuguese capital. Our visit will include Alfama (the oldest part of the city), St. George’s Castle (for the best view of the city), the Belem District (from where the Portuguese navigators set out to discover new worlds), the Belem Tower, the Jeronimos Monastery (a great example of the Manueline-style), the Monument of Henry the Navigator, and the Nacional Coach Museum (a fascinating collection of coaches and carriages from all over Europe). We will return to Estoril via the coast road. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure. Dinner and overnight. DAY 9 – OBIDOS~NAZARÉ~BATALHA~FÁTIMA: After breakfast, we will enjoy a full-day tour, with the morning dedicated to visiting Obidos (an enchanting medieval walled town) and Nazaré (a colorful fishing village). After lunch (on our own), we continue to Batalha (to visit the Batalha Monastery, an outstanding example of 15th century Gothic-style). The monastery was built to commemorate the Portuguese victory over the Spanish. We will also visit the tombs of King Don Joao I. Next on the itinerary is Fátima, to visit the Sanctuary and Apparitions Chapel. Since the Virgin Mary appeared to the peasant children in 1917, Fatima has become a world center of pilgrimage. We will return to Estoril via the farming region of Ribatejo. Dinner and overnight. (B, D) DAY 10 – SINTRA~CABO DA ROCA: After breakfast, we will depart for a half-day tour of Sintra (top photo), one of the most picturesque places in Portugal, with its mountains and gardens. We continue to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, for some truly picturesque views. Then we will travel along the coast, passing through the seaside resort of Guincho Beach, the quaint fishing village of Caisais, and cosmopolitan Estoril. Returning to our hotel, the rest of the afternoon is free. Dinner and overnight. (B, D) DAY 11 – ESTORIL~LISBON: After breakfast, we have a day at leisure for some last-minute shopping or independent sightseeing. This evening, we will return to Lisbon for a typical Portuguese dinner and fado show at a local restaurant in Bairro Alto. (Fado is the national music of Portugal, possibly influenced by the Moors.) Return to our hotel for overnight. (BB, D) DAY 12 – LISBON~INTERMEDIATE CITY~BOSTON: After breakfast, there will be some free time prior to hotel check-out and our transfer to Lisbon Airport for our return flight to Boston (via intermediate city) with full meal and beverage service, as well as stereo headsets, available while in flight. TRIP DEVIATIONS: Any request for tour deviation will be subject to availability at the time of booking. The maximum extension permitted is 10 - 14 days, depending on the airline. A deviation form, along with the surcharge fee of $150 to change the air (additional $100 for land arrangements), must be submitted at the time of initial payment, but will be accepted up to 120 days prior to departure. After processing the request, any additional deviation expenses (car rental, train, hotel, etc.) must be paid, in full, to the Retail Department of Durgan Travel Service at the time of reservation.
