Do not connect to l ive electrical wiring.Connect only to 24 Volt low voltage wires.Connection to live wires or higher voltage maycause serious injury from shock, burn orelectrocution.Children operating or playing with a garagedoor opener can injure themselves or others. The garage door could close and causeserious injury or death.Install the door control (or any additional pushbuttons) out of the reach of children and awayfrom all moving parts of the door and doorhardware, but where the garage door is visible.Do not allow children to operate the pushbutton(s) or the remote control(s).A moving garage door could injure someoneunder it. Activate the opener only when thedoor is properly adjusted, you can see it clearly, and there are no obstructions to door travel.

WARNING

Locate the door control within sight of the doorat a minimum height of 5 feet where smallchildren cannot reach, and away from all movingparts of the door and door hardware. The door control is typically attached directly to thewall. If installing into drywall, drill 5/32" holes anduse the anchors provided. For pre-wired installations(as in new home construction), Console modelsmay be mounted to a standard single gang box(Figure 2).1. Strip 1/4" of insulation from one end of the bell

wire and connect it to the two screw terminals onthe back of the door control: white to 2, andwhite/red to 1.

2. Pry off cover along one side with a screwdriverblade (see Figure 1). Fasten with 6ABx1-1/4" self-tapping screws (standard installation) or 6-32x1"machine screws (pre-wired installation) asfollows:

• Install bottom screw, allowing 1/8" to protrudeabove wall surface.

21

The Safety Reversing SystemIMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THESAFETY REVERSING SENSOR

The safety reversing sensor must be connectedand aligned correctly before the garage dooropener will move in the down direction. This is arequired safety device and cannot be disabled.

When properly connected and aligned, the safetyreversing sensor will detect an obstacle in the pathof its electronic beam. The sending eye (with anorange indicator light) transmits an invisible lightbeam to the receiving eye (with a green indicatorlight). If an obstruction breaks the light beam whilethe door is closing, the door will stop and reverse tofull open position, and the opener light will flash10 times.

The units must be installed inside the garage sothat the sending and receiving eyes face each otheracross the door, between 4 – 6" above the floor.Either can be installed on the left or right of the dooras long as the sun never shines directly into thereceiving eye lens.

The mounting brackets are designed to clip onto thetrack of sectional garage doors without additionalhardware.

If it is necessary to mount the units on the wall, thebrackets must be securely fastened to a solid surfacesuch as the wall framing. Extension brackets (seeaccessories) are available if needed. If installing inmasonry construction, add a piece of wood at eachlocation to avoid drilling extra holes in masonry ifrepositioning is necessary.

The invisible light beam path must be unobstructed. No part of the garage door (or door tracks, springs, hinges, rollers or other hardware) may interrupt thebeam while the door is closing.

INSTALLING THE BRACKETSBe sure power to the opener is disconnected.Install and align the brackets so the sensors willface each other across the garage door, with thebeam from 4 – 6" above the floor.

They may be installed in one of three ways, asfollows.

Garage door track installation (preferred):• Slip the curved arms over the rounded edge of

each door track, with the curved arms facing thedoor. Snap into place against the side of the track. It should lie flush, with the lip hugging the backedge of the track, as shown in Figure 2.

If your door track will not support the bracketsecurely, wall installation is recommended.

Wall installation: • Place the bracket against the wall with curved

arms facing the door. Be sure there is enoughclearance for the sensor beam to be unobstructed.

• If additional depth is needed, an extension bracket(see Accessories) or wood blocks can be used.

• Use bracket mounting holes as a template tolocate and drill (2) 3/16" diameter pilot holes onthe wall at each side of the door, from 4–6" abovethe floor. (See warning on page 21).

• Attach brackets to wall with lag screws (notprovided).

• If using extension brackets or wood blocks, adjustright and left assemblies to the same distance outfrom the mounting surface. Make sure all doorhardware obstructions are cleared.

Floor installation: • Use wood blocks or extension brackets (see

Accessories) to elevate sensor brackets so thelenses will be 4-6" above the floor.

• Carefully measure and place right and leftassemblies at the same distance out from the wall.Be sure all door hardware obstructions arecleared.

• Fasten to the floor with concrete anchors asshown.

Mounting and Wiring the Safety Sensors• Slide a 1/4"-20x1/2" carriage bolt head into the slot

on each sensor. Use wing nuts to fasten sensors tobrackets, with lenses pointing toward each otheracross the door. Be sure the lens is not obstructed bya bracket extension. See Figure 5.

• Finger tighten the wing nuts.• Run the wires from both sensors to the opener. Use

insulated staples to secure wire to wall and ceiling.• Strip 1/4" of insulation from each set of wires.

Separate white and white/black wires sufficiently toconnect to the opener terminal screws: white to 2and white/black to 3.

Aligning the Safety Sensors• Plug in the opener. The indicator lights in both the

sending and receiving eyes will glow steadily if wiringconnections and alignment are correct.

The sending eye orange indicator light will glowregardless of alignment or obstruction. If the greenindicator light in the receiving eye is off, dim, orflickering (and the invisible light beam path is notobstructed), alignment is required.• Loosen the sending eye wing nut and readjust,

aiming directly at the receiving eye. Lock in place.• Loosen the receiving eye wing nut and adjust sensor

vertically and/or horizontally until it receives thesender’s beam. When the green indicator light glowssteadily, tighten the wing nut.

23

Figure 6 Wiring the Safety Sensors

Trouble Shooting the Safety Sensors1. If the sending eye indicator light does not glow

steadily after installation, check for:• Electric power to the opener.• A short in the white or white/black wires. These can

occur at staples, or at screw terminal connections.• Incorrect wiring between sensors and opener.• A broken wire.

2. If the sending eye indicator light glows steadily but thereceiving eye indicator light doesn't:• Check alignment.• Check for a broken wire to the receiving eye.

3. If the receiving eye indicator light is dim, realign eithersensor.

NOTE: When the invisible beam path is obstructed ormisaligned while the door is closing, the door willreverse. If the door is already open, it will not close. Theopener lights will flash 10 times. (If bulbs are notinstalled, 10 clicks can be heard.) See page 21.

Installation Step 11Fasten Door Bracket Follow instructions which apply to your doortype as illustrated below or on page 25.

To prevent damage to steel, aluminum, fiberglass or glass panel doors, alwaysreinforce the inside of the door both verticallyand horizontally with an angle iron.

A horizontal brace should be long enough to be secured to 2 vertical supports. A vertical brace shouldcover the height of the top panel. The illustration shows one piece of angle iron as the horizontal brace. For the vertical brace, 2 pieces ofangle iron are used to create a "U"-shaped support. The best solution is to check with your garage doormanufacturer for an opener installation door reinforcement kit.

• Center the door bracket on the previously markedvertical guideline used for the header bracketinstallation. Note correct UP placement, asstamped inside the bracket.

• Position the bracket on the face of the door withinthe following limits:

A) The top edge of the bracket 2"-4" below the topedge of the door.

B) The top edge of the bracket directly below anystructural support across the top of the door.

• Mark and drill 5/16" left and right fastening holes.Secure the bracket as shown in Figure 1 if there isvertical reinforcement.

If your installation doesn't require vertical reinforce-ment but does need top and bottom fastening holesfor the door bracket, fasten as shown in Figure 2.

Adjustment Step 2Adjust the Force

Too much force on the door will interfere withthe proper operation of the safety reversesystem. The door might not reverse properlywhen required and could seriously injure orkill someone under it. Do not increase theforce beyond the minimum amount requiredto close the door. Do not use the forceadjustments to compensate for a binding orsticking garage door. Test the safety reversesystem following all adjustments to forcelevels. See page 30.

How and When to Adjust the Forces

Test the DOWN (close) forceGrasp the door bottom when the door is abouthalfway through DOWN (close) travel. The doorshould reverse. Reversal halfway through downtravel does not guarantee reversal on a two-inchobstruction. See page 30. If the door is hard tohold or doesn't reverse, decrease the DOWN (close)force by turning the control counterclockwise.

Make 10 degree turn adjustments until the doorreverses normally. After each adjustment, run theopener through a complete cycle.

Test the UP (open) forceGrasp the door bottom when the door is abouthalfway through UP (open) travel. The door shouldstop. If the door is hard to hold or doesn't stop, decrease UP (open) force by turning the controlcounterclockwise.

Make 10 degree turn adjustments until the door stopseasily. After each adjustment, run the opener througha complete travel cycle.

If the door doesn't open at least 5 feetIncrease UP (Open) force by turning the controlclockwise. Make 10 degree turn adjustments untildoor opens completely. Re-adjust the UP limit ifnecessary. After each adjustment, run the openerthrough a complete travel cycle.

If the door reverses during the down (close) cycleand the opener lights aren't flashingIncrease DOWN (close) force by turning the controlclockwise. Make 10 degree turn adjustments until thedoor completes a close cycle. After each adjustment, run the opener through a complete travel cycle. Donot increase the force beyond the minimumamount required to close the door.

29

WARNING

Force adjustment controls are located on the rightside panel of the opener. Force adjustment settingsregulate the amount of power required to open andclose the door.

The door will stop in the up direction if anythinginterferes with its travel. The door will reverse in thedown direction if anything interferes with its travel(including binding or unbalanced doors).

If the forces are set too light, door travel may beinterrupted by nuisance reversals in the downdirection and stops in the up direction.

Weather conditions can affect the doormovement, so occasional adjustment may beneeded. The maximum force adjustment range is 260 degrees, about 3/4 of a complete turn. Do not force controlsbeyond that point. Turn force adjustment controlswith a screwdriver.

Adjustment Step 4Test the Safety Reverse System

TEST:• With the door fully open, place a 2x4 laid flat on

the floor, centered under the garage door.

• Operate the door in the down direction. The doormust reverse on striking the obstruction.

ADJUSTMENT:If the door stops on the obstruction, it is not travelingfar enough in the down direction.

• Increase the DOWN limit by turning the DOWNlimit adjustment screw counterclockwise 1/4 turn.

• Repeat the test.

On a sectional door, make sure limitadjustments do not cause the trolley to movewithin 2-1/2" of the trolley stop bolt. Ifnecessary, lengthen straight door arm tomaintain this minimum distance.• When the door reverses on the 2x4, remove the

obstruction and run the opener through 3 or 4complete travel cycles to test adjustment.

If the door will not reverse after repeated adjustmentattempts, call for professional garage door service.

Adjustment Step 3Test The Safety Reversing Sensor

• Press the remote control push button to open thedoor.

• Place the opener carton in the path of the door.

• Press the remote control push button to close thedoor. The door will not move more than an inch, and the opener lights will flash.

Professional service is required if the openercloses the door when the safety reversingsensor is obstructed. The garage door opener will not close from a remotecontrol if the indicator light in either sensor is off(alerting you to the fact that the sensor is misalignedor obstructed).

The garage door can be closed by pressing andholding the Door Control push button until downtravel is completed. Safety Reversing Sensor Safety Reversing Sensor

Without a properly working safety reversingsensor, persons (particularly children) could beseriously injured or killed if trapped by a closinggarage door. Repeat this test once a month.

Having a Problem?Situation Probable Cause and Solution

The opener doesn'toperate from eitherthe Door Control orthe remote control:

Opener operatesfrom the remotecontrol, but not fromthe Door Control:

1. Is the Door Control lit? If not, remove the bell wire from the opener terminalscrews. Short the red and white terminals by touching both terminals at thesame time with a piece of wire. If the opener runs, check for a faulty wireconnection at the Door Control, a short under the staples, or a broken wire.

2. Are the wiring connections correct? Review Step 6, page 18.

The door operatesfrom the DoorControl, but not fromthe remote control:

1. Is any door push button flashing? If your model has the Lock feature, makesure the lock is Off.

2. Your opener needs to re-learn a remote control code. Refer to Instructions onthe opener panel.

3. Program the receiver to match the remote control code.4. Repeat the receiver programming procedure with all remote controls.

The remote controlhas short range:

The garage dooropens and closesby itself:

1. Be sure that all remote control push buttons are off.2. Remove the bell wire from the Door Control terminals and operate from the

remote control only. If this solves the problem, the Door Control is faulty(replace), or there is an intermittent short on the wire between the Door Controland the opener.

3. Clear memory and reprogram all remote controls.

The door doesn'topen completely:

1. Is something obstructing the door? Remove the obstruction or repair the door.2. If the door has been working properly but now doesn't open all the way,

increase the up force. See page 29.3. If door opens at least 5 feet, the travel limits may need to be increased. One

turn equals 2 inches of travel. See page 28.Repeat the safety reverse test after the adjustment is complete.

The door stops butdoesn't closecompletely:

Review the travel limits adjustment procedures on page 28.Repeat the safety reverse test after any adjustment of door arm length, closeforce or down limit.

34

1. Change the location of the remote control in your car.2. Check to be sure the antenna on the side or back panel of opener extends fully

downward.3. Some installations may have shorter range due to a metal door, foil backed

insulation, or metal garage siding.

Opener noise isdisturbing in livingquarters of home:

If operational noise is a problem because of proximity of the opener to the livingquarters, the Vibration Isolator Kit 41A3263 can be installed. This kit was designed tominimize vibration to the house and is easy to install.

Having a Problem? (continued)

Situation Probable Cause & Solution

The door reverses forno apparent reasonand opener lightsdon't blink:

1. Is something obstructing the door? Pull the red emergency release handle. Operatethe door manually. If it is unbalanced or binding, call for professional garage doorservice.

2. Clear any ice or snow from the garage floor area where the door closes.3. Review the force adjustment procedures on page 29.4. If door reverses in the fully closed position, decrease the travel limits (page 28).

Repeat safety reverse test after adjustments to force or travel limits. The needfor occasional adjustment of the force and limit settings is normal. Weatherconditions in particular can affect door travel.

The door reverses forno apparent reasonand opener lightsblink for 5 secondsafter reversing:

The opener lights: . . . don't turn on:Replace the light bulbs (75 watts maximum). Use a standard neck garage door openerbulb if regular bulb burns out.

. . . don't turn off:Is the Light feature on? Turn it off.

The opener strains ormaximum force isneeded to operatedoor:

The door may be out of balance or the springs are broken. Close the door and use theemergency release to disconnect the trolley. Open and close the door manually. A properlybalanced door will stay in any point of travel while being supported entirely by its springs. If itdoes not, disconnect the opener and call a professional garage door serviceman. Do notincrease the force to operate the opener.

The opener motorhums briefly, thenwon't work:

1. The garage door springs are broken. See above.2. If the problem occurs on the first operation of the opener, door may be locked. Disable

the door lock. If the belt was removed and reinstalled, the motor may be out of phase.Remove the belt; cycle the motor to the down position. Observe the drive sprocket. When it turns in a clockwise direction and stops in the down position, reinstall the belt.Repeat the safety reverse test after the adjustment is complete.

The opener won'toperate due topower failure:

1. Use the emergency release to disconnect the trolley. The door can be opened and closedmanually. When the power is restored, press the Door Control push button and trolley willautomatically reconnect (unless trolley is in lockout position.) See page 32.

2. The Emergency Key Release accessory (for use on garages with no service door)disconnects the trolley from outside the garage in case of power failure.

35

The door opens butwon't close:

Check the safety reversing sensor. Remove any obstruction or align the receiving eye.See page 23.

1. If the opener lights blink, check the safety reversing sensor. See page 23.2. If the opener lights do not blink and it is a new installation, check the down force.

See Adjustment Step 2, page 29. For an existing installation, see below.Repeat the safety reverse test after the adjustment is complete.
