KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH

There’s no better way to deepen our Lenten practice than

to review the Ten Commandments. The first three, having to

do with our right relationship to God, get the most ink. The

one we busy people probably have the most

problem with is keeping holy the Sabbath.

If we take this commandment literally, ba-

bies will go undiapered and dishes will stay on

the table, or perhaps meals will not be served.

The sick will go unattended and nothing that has

anything to do with physical labor will be done.

Is mental labor really work? How about chang-

ing that dirty diaper (poor baby!)?

We need to depend on God to discern how to observe real

Sabbath time in our lives. The point of this commandment is

that God has given us a great gift: one whole day per week

when we are free to rest, worship God, sing, feast, love, and

rejoice. As Psalm 19 proclaims: “The law of the LORD is per-

fect, / refreshing the soul” (19:8). Our Sabbath rest is a great

gift, to be received from God with joy, not with nitpicking. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

sar, rendirle culto a Dios, cantar, celebrar, amar y alegrarnos.

cosas, nuestros temores, nuestros problemas, nuestros gozos y nues-

tros anhelos.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION..

During Lent it is important to pray, but many people declare

themselves ignorant about the topic of prayer. They say that

they never learned to pray or that they would like to be able to pray

better. Sadly, many have a wrong understanding about what prayer is.

They think that to pray is just to recite memorized prayers or hope

that prayer will produce extraordinary visions such as

the transfiguration of Jesus Christ on Mount Tabor.

They expect patriarchs and prophets, or at least angels

and saints, to appear suddenly.

I'm not saying that these things do not happen, many

people have experienced it, some of them for being

very holy while others for being crazy. Sincerely,

prayer is something else, it is easier than learning sen-

tences from memory and much simpler than ecstasies

and visions. To pray is to speak as a son or daughter to

the God who loves us as a mother, father, brother, sister, lover and

friend. To pray is to tell the Lord how things are going, our fears, our

problems, our joys and our desires. To pray is to spend time with

God, sometimes talking, and sometimes quiet, but always loved.
