PREFACE AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

USA Track and Field and FAST are proud to present the 2013 USA Track and Field MediaGuide and FAST Annual. This book combines the USATF media guide with the FAST Annual, which continues to be the definitive statistical work for United States track and field. This isthe 35th Edition of the FAST Annual and the 19th year of a cooperative publishing agreementbetween FAST and USA Track & Field.

The 2013 FAST Annual incorporates some major differences from past editions. All lists havenew formatting, and the All-Time lists have undergone a major revision (still a work-in-progress). Bob Bettwy, Jack Pfeifer and Barry Schreiber have again managed a huge task inassembling the men’s and women’s indexes. Other compilers were: Hal Bateman (sprints),John Blackburn (juniors), Bob Bowman (walks), Andy Ferrara (men’s 110 hurdles), MarcGrosso (all relays), Mike Hubbard (women’s 800-3000), Bob Jarvis (shot put), Dave Johnson(men’s horizontal jumps, women’s 100 hurdles), Joe Lanzalotto (400), Michael McLaughlin(women’s 400 hurdles), Ken Nakamura (all races from the steeplechase through themarathon), Becca Peter (pole vault), Adam Schneider (javelin), Barry Schreiber (men’s discusand hammer throws), Josh Seeherman (relays, women’s throws), Jim Sorensen (men’s 800-3000), Jesse Squire (men’s 400 hurdles), Don Steffens (high jump), Lloyd Stephens (women’slong jump) and Frank Zarnowski (decathlon). Tom Casacky compiled the women’s heptathlon,re-worked the records and all-time lists, and edited and formatted the Annual itself.

The basic policies of data compilation remain the same. Altitude marks in the affected eventsare denoted with a capital A. Indoor field event marks are included within the lists, while trackmarks remain separate. Readers can assume that most field event marks are now measuredmetrically; some high school and other marks have been converted from the imperial systemusing Tables 4, 5 and 6 from the IAAF-approved tables. Note that marks measured in theimperial system should only be converted in this fashion. The Track & Field News tablesshould be used only to convert from metric to imperial.

USATF Communications Manager Jared Slinde performed research and updates for themen’s athlete bios along with organizing the information through the book’s front portionwhile Marketing and Communications Manager Katie Branham handled the same duties withthe women’s athlete bios. USATF Statistician Glen McMicken provided the historicalinformation for the medal counts for Olympic and world championship competition. Imagesfrom Photo Run and Kirby Lee added the visual elements to the book and MatchbookCreative handled the design.

Jack Shepard and Mike Kennedy supplied most of the data on high school performances.Glen McMicken’s lists for USATF and Track & Field News were also valuable sources. Againthis year, we were able to frequently exchange information with Peter Matthews, editor of theAssociation of Track & Field Statisticians (ATFS) Annual, and his input was vital to theaccuracy of our lists. The same can be said for Finland’s Mirko Jalava, who supplied deep USlists and many additional details for the index. Richard Hymans again sent corrections to theAll-Time lists. Among periodicals, Track Newsletter and Track & Field News are indispensable, and compilers have also used Athletics International, published in Great Britain. As always,we thank the coaches and sports information directors of many colleges and universities forproviding media guides and meet results.

Please send corrections, additions or comments about this edition to Jared Slinde at USATrack & Field and Tom Casacky in care of FAST.

Mission

USA Track & Field drives competitive excellence and popularengagement in our sport.

A Sport for Everyone ... For Life!

When we say that USATF is a "Sport for Everyone ... For Life," we mean exactlythat. Just a few of the ways we serve our sport include:

Establishing grassroots programs, such as the Junior Olympics, to helpdevelop future stars who will follow in the footsteps of Tyson Gay, AllysonFelix, Sanya Richards-Ross, Bryan Clay, Lauryn Williams, Adam Nelson, Deena Kastor and Meb Keflezighi.

Developing, selecting and leading Team USA - the World's #1 team - at the Olympics, WorldChampionships and more than 12 other internationalevents each year. Roughly 700 athletes of all ages wear a Team USA uniform in any given year.

Promoting programs of training and competition formen and women and boys and girls of all ages.

Establishing and enforcing the rules and regulations of our sport.

Sanctioning more than 4,000 events each year.

Providing insurance to sanctioned events, memberclubs and member-athletes.

Pushing Ahead

Although our sport traces its roots back to ancient Greece, USATF is on a missionto put track and field at the cutting edge of the 21st-century sports scene. In 1999,USATF began a series of elite competitions that gives American athletes whatthey've requested for years - to compete at home, to receive increased televisionand other media coverage, and to be paid significant prize money based on performance.

Known in previous years as the Golden Spike Tour and Visa Championship Series, beginning with the indoor season in 2013, USA Track & Field started the USATFChampionship Series. For the first time in the history, all events during the 2013indoor season featured live coverage, which marked a significant moment as USATrack & Field’s broadcast platform continues to move forward. In just a shortwindow of competition, the USATF Championship Series, which includes eventsranging from the iconic Millrose Games to the USA Indoor and OutdoorChampionships and Olympic Trials, has already witnessed world and Americanrecords and consistently features top competition on an international level.

From an organizational perspective, USATF has been one of the greatest financialsuccess stories in sport, more than doubling its overall revenues since 1997. Theorganization currently has an impressive line-up of sponsors and suppliers thatincludes Nike, St. Vincent Sports Performance, BMW, Lynx, Gill Athletics,Gatorade and Ludus Tours.

This surge in revenue has coincided with a hefty increase in the number of trackmeets broadcast on television and TV ratings. Our sport has upwards of 40national TV broadcasts in any given year, and average Nielsen ratings for track andfield broadcasts are higher than those of the NHL, the WNBA and Major LeagueSoccer. In addition to securing national TV coverage, USA Track & Field hasworked with ESPN, NBC, Fox Sports Net, Universal Sports, ESPN3 and theInternational Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) to bring same-day, prime-time coverage of major international events to the American airwaves throughoutthe summer season.

Reaching Out

USA Track & Field and our partners also reach out to the community. In 2003,USATF launched its ZERO TOLERANCE policy, featuring a comprehensive anti-drug messaging plan that calls for lifetime bans of steroid cheats. One of its maintenants is to educate athletes, coaches and officials on all levels about thedangers of drug use, and to spread the message that drug use is morally wrong -and cheaters will be caught.

To help deliver that message, beginning in 2004 USATF joined with the AmericanCollege of Sports Medicine to launch an elite athlete outreach program, nowcalled "Win with Integrity." At select events, USATF's star athletes speak withlocal schools and community centers about the importance of fitness, a healthylifestyle, living with integrity -- including a drug-free life -- and setting goals. Todate, thousands of children have been reached in person with more than amillion being exposed to "Win with Integrity" through television messaging. "Winwith Integrity" has been enthusiastically embraced by USATF athletes and thestudents to whom they speak and is a key component of the rich history ofvoluntarism displayed by Team USA.

Education

USATF conducts instructional programs such as Coaching Education courses, designed to elevate and standardize the level of coaching across the country.More than 14,000 coaches have been educated under USATF programs. Athleteclinics are held nationwide, covering a wide range of disciplines, from racewalking to pole vault. Activities such as Cultural Exchange trips and AssociationWorkshops allow our members opportunities to share ideas and information.

USATF Annual Meeting

Traditionally held the week following Thanksgiving, our Annual Meeting bringstogether more than 1,300 of the sport's officials, coaches, administrators, athletes and supporters. The yearly gathering serves as a forum to chart thefuture of our sport by considering policy changes, selecting national team staffsand Championship meet sites, and electing national officers. It is a forum wherethe individual's voice can be heard.

But it is not all business. The Annual Meeting also gives us the opportunity torecognize the achievements of our sport's volunteers and athletes. Each year,USATF inducts a new class into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame andmakes presentations for year-end award winners, including the Jesse OwensAward for the top American athletes.

Members attending the Annual Meeting have the opportunity to meet the sport'stop stars, and USATF offers various social and recreational opportunities forattendees throughout the five-day event.

Felix, Eaton claim Jesse OwensAthlete of the Year Awards

An award presented annually to the most outstanding U.S.male and female track and field performers, Allyson Felix and Ashton Eaton were named the winners of the 2012 Jesse Owens Awards. This is Felix’s fourth time to win the award and Eaton’s first.

Felix finds herself at the top of a list of track and field legends as the winningestrecipient of the award at just 26 years of age. Felix already had an impeccableresume entering the 2012 season, but she was able to add the one thing missingfrom her trophy case - an individual Olympic gold medal. En route to London, Felixclocked a sensational 21.69 200m at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials to break FlorenceGriffith-Joyner’s 24-year-old Olympic Trials record and become the fourth fastestwoman in history.

In London, Felix became the first woman since Flo-Jo in 1988 to win three goldmedals in a single Olympic Games. Felix won individual Olympic gold in the 200m(21.88) and won gold on the 4x400m relay (3:16.87) and in the world-record setting4x100m relay (40.82).

Eaton’s 2012 season forever left his name in the record books with a nearly perfectseason. Eaton (Eugene, Ore.) completed three multi-event competitions in 2012; heset a world record in the first two and won Olympic gold in the third.

Eaton started the year with his first national title in an individual event as he won thelong jump at the USA Indoor Championships. From there he went on to better hisown world record in the heptathlon as he won the World Indoor Championships with6,645 points.

At the Olympic Trials, Eaton’s rain-soaked world record became the iconicperformance of the meet. After setting decathlon world records in the 100m and longjump, Eaton electrified the Eugene crowd as he ran a personal best in the 1500m tosecure his world record of 9,039 points.

Two world records would have been enough to make Eaton’s 2012 season legendary, but he didn’t relent as he went on to win Olympic gold in London with a performanceof 8,869 points.

Lopez Lomong was named the recipient of the 2012 Visa Humanitarian of the Year Award.

While building a career as one of the nation’s top middle distance runners,Lomong established the Lopez Lomong Foundation in the fall of 2011 in an effortto give back to his native country of the South Sudan. The foundation teamed upwith World Vision to launch the 4 South Sudan campaign to provide access toclean water, offer families basic health care, give children access to education andto provide life-saving nutrition.

In less than a year, Lomong raised more than $150,000 for clean water and ishoping to break the $250,000 mark by January.

Background

In 2004, USATF and Team USA athletes initiated an outreach program that wasaimed at educating youth, parents, educators, and coaches about the positiveresults that come from leading a physically active, drug-free lifestyle while livingwith integrity. Track and Field champions from every discipline visited schoolsand community centers all over the country to work directly with young people.Since then, the Win With Integrity program has evolved from a start-up programinto one of USA Track & Field's most successful initiatives.

Program Content

The Win With Integrity program includes the introduction of the participatingathletes by a USATF emcee, who also provides background on the goals andthemes of USA Track & Field and of Win With Integrity, stressing the importance ofactive, drug-free lifestyles and good decision-making. The USATF Year-in-ReviewVideo is then played, providing visual motivation for the students and displayingthe excitement of our sport and athletes. Following the video, athletes engage inan interactive question-and-answer session with students, focusing on the keythemes of good sportsmanship, the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle, andthe need to avoid drugs. The program concludes with the recitation of the WinWith Integrity program pledge (see below) and an athlete autograph session.

When available, the program is held inside an auditorium, where a Win WithIntegrity program banner is displayed across the stage. As students file into theauditorium, they are handed a Win With Integrity pledge card. At the end of theprogram, participants recite a pledge indicating their commitment to be activeand drug-free. USATF staff script the program and suggest athlete talking pointsbased on feedback from local educators and the Win With Integrity pledge.

But his proudest momentcame when he won the gold medal at the 1996 OlympicGames, the last time a member of Team USA has done so.His career was also one of longevity. When he won his lastUSA Indoor championship in 2003, it was 12 years after hisfirst world title and the year he set the American record(2.40m/7-10.5). Arthur DuffeyBorn: June 14, 1879; Died: January 25, 1955

For half a decade at the end of the 1800s and early1900s, Arthur Duffey was considered the fastestman in the world. In 1902 he became the firstperson to set the world record in the 100-yard dashat 9.6 seconds (9 3/5 second at the time). He wasthe favorite to win the 1900 Olympic Games in the100 meters, but did not finish in the final due to apulled muscle. His greatest accomplishment waswinning four consecutive AAA titles in England from1900 through 1903. He also won the IC4A 100-yardtitle each year from 1901 through 1903 whilecompeting for Georgetown University. Duffey raninto controversy with AAU President James Sullivanover his amateur status and Duffey’s AAU recordsand IC4A titles were erased. The British AAA,notoriously more strict about amateurism than theAAU, chose not to delete Duffey’s name from theirlist of champions. Following his competitive career,Duffey spent much of the rest of his life as a sportswriter with the Boston Post.

Pat McDonaldBorn: July 29, 1878; Died: May 16, 1954

Pat McDonald is recognized as the oldest Olympicchampion in history, winning the 56-pound weightthrow at the 1920 Games at the age of 42. However, his career was far from over as he won the last of hisincredible 16 AAU titles in the weight throw in 1933at the age of 55. McDonald also won the 1912Olympic gold medal in the shot put and a silvermedal in the men’s two-handed shot put. The latterevent, which featured recording the total distance aperson threw the shot put with each arm, was onlycontested in 1912. Born in Ireland, McDonald movedto New York City where he competed for the Irish-American A.C. and the New York A.C. and workedfor the New York Police Department, spending muchof his time patrolling Times Square..
