Delegates from other continents eleceted UmarKoya from India as President of Commonwealth, Al-Hitmi Kalifa from Quatar for the President of Asia, JorgeVega from Mexico for American region. New presidentsare elected for period of four years. We congratulate toall the presidents!

Na dana{njem zasedanju so delegati ponovno izvolilipredsednika Evropske {ahovske zveze Borisa Kutina, kije tudi direktor 35. [ahovske olimpiade. Delegati drugihkontinentov pa so za svoje predsednike izvolili Al-HitmiKalifa iz Katarja za Azijo, Jorge Vego iz Mehike zaAmeriko, Umar Koyo iz Indije za dr‘aveCommonweltha. Vsi novoizvoljeni predsedniki so biliimenovani za predsednike kontinentalnih zvez zanaslednja {tiri leta. Vsem predsednikom ~estitamo!

PRESIDENT OF THE STATE VISITED BLEDPresident of the Republic of Slovenia Milan Ku~an came to Bled in the afternoon. After meeting withthe Executing Commitee he visited playhall. In suite of the committee and Chief Arbiter the presidentwatched some of the most important matches of the day. After visiting Bled City Hall Milan Ku~an sawthe first chess statue monument, which was officially opened in the morning. Visiting all importantlocations of 35. Chess Olympiad the presidents did not miss to visit the Press Center with tehnicalservice room. The official visit of the President of Republic has finished in Vila Bled, where the recep-tion for FIDE delegates was organized.

[ahovske olimpiade, s katerimi so se po kratkem pogovoru odpravili v Ledeno dvorano. Vspremstvu organizacijskega odbora si je predsednik republike skupaj z glavnim sodnikom ogledalnajpomembnej{e partije dneva. Po obisku blejske ob~inske hi{e si je Milan Ku~an ogledal {e prvispomenik {ahu, ki je bil danes dopoldne tudi uradno predstavljen javnosti. Na ogledu pomembnihlokacij {ahovske olimpiade pa niso izpustili novinarskega sredi{~a in prostorov tehni~ne podpore, kjerso jim odgovorni predstavili svoje delo. Uradni obisk predsednika se je kon~al v vili Bled, kjer soorganizatorji pripravili sprejem za delegate FIDE.

INTERVIEW WITHLJUBOMIR LJUBOJEVI]

Ljubomir Ljubojevi} is considered to be one ofthe greatest living legends of the Yugoslavianchess and also one of the biggest chess talentsfrom the ex Yugoslavia. His numerous brilliantgames will live forever and will never be forgot-ten.Since the year 1991 he lives in Spain, where hemarried. In the last decade he did not play much,but this year he sensationaly returned to the Yu-goslavian team, as the board number one

Today numerous matches between man and com-puter are played. Do you think that such matcheshave any value?At this moment they have a certain value, however theyare mainly important for the computers, due to the bigpromotion for them. The recent match between Kramnikand Deep Fritz was a very good promotion for the com-puter. I think that it is right for Kramnik to get a vastamount of money for the match against the computer,for the computers obtain a lot of publicity from thesematches. Chess programmes are becoming increasinglycommercial and they are also improving. At one stagematches between man and computer will have no valueat all, because the computers will be to good. However, Ihope that this day is still far away.

What is your opinion of doping control?Doping control is performed at this Olympiad. However,it is in my opinion that an electronic doping controlshould be performed and not the control of caffeine andsimilar substances. Electronic doping control is muchmore important. Somebody can for instance receive textmessages on his mobile phone from a very strong com-puter, telling him which move to make. He can have areceiver that informs him that he has only two promis-ing moves and that he should concentrate only on thetwo continuations of the game. It is also possible to beconnected to a very powerful computer abroad, behindwhich a whole team can stand. Players can receive textmessages on their mobile phones completely unnoticed,without a sound, without any sort of a sign. I think thatan electronic doping control should take place.

Does the youth today have any motive whatsoeverto play chess?Yes. It would be good also for those who do not knowhow to play chess or do not know anything about it tolearn how to play it, for in my opinion this might be themost complex game, looking from the philosophicalstandpoint. It is important for the development of thebasic human mind and spirit. I repeat, the basic. It isgood for people to know what is going on in chess al-ready from the general knowledge aspect. Some of themwould grow to like the game and would pay more atten-tion to it. I am of the opinion that everybody shouldknow what is going on in chess, what is hidden in thisgame, for it includes a great spectre of human charac-teristics.

What would be your suggestion to the young peo-ple as to which book should they pick up?I think that any book written at a slightly higher level isappropriate. If it is a book for beginners and one alreadyknows how to play chess, there is no use in it. Appropri-ate are the more demanding books. However, in my ex-perience, a book is never enough by itself. It is the sameas for people who have learnt a language but have neverused it in practice – when the time comes they find itvery difficult to use it. With chess the situation is com-pletely the same – you need practice – a combination ofpractice and theory. I would even go as far as to statethat practice is more important. With other words: theymust play.

Did any of the chess books leave a great impres-sion on you?It is my opinion that a complete chess book has not beenwritten so far, even though it might be one day. Why?Not even one book on chess has captured the variousperspectives of the game of chess, from different angles.In the books they for instance describe the games, how-ever, the time of the game, the small moments, the cul-tural background of the players and similar informationare not disclosed. Chess is too focused on the technicalside, on the combinations, moves, openings, etc. There-fore the greatest attention is in fact focused on the tech-nical side and the books on chess are not written as nov-els, which would include everything. So far, a book likethis does not exist on chess, at least not that I know of. Its

6time has not come yet, maybe someday, somebody willwrite it. I sure hope so.

Are only order and discipline important for thesuccess in chess?These two things are certainly important in order toachieve success, however, they come to nothing withouttalent. What in fact is talent? Talent is most probablysome sort of enthusiasm, a love for something that weare involved in. Those people who perform their workwithout love have very little chances for success. Do youunderstand? They have to like something. They mustfind emotional support in themselves. That is the onlyway it is feasible. You most certainly need order anddiscipline, however in my opinion, talent comes first.

How do you accept a defeat?Every professional chess player finds it hard to acceptdefeat - this is understandable. Today, after so manyyears of being an experienced chess player, I look at thisfrom a philosophical viewpoint and I say that defeats area part of the game and should be taken as such. If you

will pose this question to Kasparov, he will of course re-ply that he can not imagine how he would spend thenight following a defeat. That is logical. He, as the worldchampion and the greatest player in the world, is of theopinion that a defeat would present the end of his life.But for us, who are not the world champions, defeatdoes not mean that much. It is good to take it as a partof the game.

Bled has a rich chess tradition. How do you feelhere, like a native or a foreigner?Bled is known for chess and I am very glad that theyhave decided in Slovenia to choose Bled as the centre ofthe world of chess during the Olympiad. Bled has a richhistory and this is only another addition to its history.Vidmar’s memorials should also return to Bled. This isthe right place for them. Of course there are numerousother appropriate venues in Slovenia, but Bled must keepon building its rich tradition. This tradition shouldnever cease - it should go on for ever and ever. I hopethis will be the case.

Ljubomir Ljubojevi} velja za eno od najve~jihlegend jugoslovanskega {aha in hkrati za eneganajve~jih {ahovskih talentov s podro~ja biv{eJugoslavije. [tevilne njegove briljantne partijebodo ostale ve~no zapisane in nepozabljene.Od leta 1991 dalje ‘ivi v [paniji, kjer se je tudiporo~il. V zadnjem desetletju ni veliko igral,letos pa se je precej senzacionalno vrnil vjugoslovansko reprezentanco, kjer igra prav na~elu ekipe.

Dandanes so aktualni {tevilni dvoboji med~lovekom in ra~unalnikom, kaj menite, so ti dvobojismiselni?V tem trenutku so smiselni, vendar so pomembnipredvsem za ra~unalnike, ker ti dobivajo velikopromocijo. Tudi nedavni dvoboj med Kramnikom in DeepFritzom je bil izjemna promocija za ra~unalnik. Menim,da je v redu, da Kramnik pri tem zaslu‘i velike vsotedenarja in igra proti ra~unalnikom, saj slednji s tem mo~nopridobijo na publiciteti. [ahovski programi se takokomercializirajo in postajajo vse bolj{i. Nekega dne bododvoboji med ljudmi in ra~unalniki nesmiselni, saj bodora~unalniki bolj{i. Vendar upam, da ta dan {e ne bo pri{eltako kmalu.

Kak{no je va{e mnenje o doping kontroli?Na tej olimpijadi se izvaja doping kontrola. Vendar je mojemnenje, da bi bilo potrebno izvr{evati elektronskokontrolo, in ne kontrolo kofeina in podobnih substanc.Elektronska kontrola je mnogo pomembnej{a. Nekdolahko npr. dobiva sporo~ila na mobilni telefon z nekegamo~nega ra~unalnika, kako naj igra. Lahko ima sprejem-nik, ki mu sporo~a, da ima na voljo le dve perspektivnipotezi, pove mu, naj gleda le dve nadaljevanji. Mo‘na jepovezava z nekim mo~nim ra~unalnikom iz tujine, zakaterim stoji cela ekipa. Na mobilni telefon lahko povsemneopa‘eno dobiva sporo~ila brez tona, brez kakr{negakoli znaka. Izvajati bi se torej morala elektronska kontrola.

Ima dandanes mladina kak{en motiv, da se ukvarjas {ahom?Ima. Tudi za tiste, ki ne znajo igrati {aha ali ga sploh ne

poznajo, bi bilo dobro, da se ga nau~ijo, kajti {ah je, kotigra, to je moje mnenje, s filozofskega stali{~a, mogo~enajbolj kompleksna igra. Pomembna je za razvojtemeljnega ~lovekovega uma in duha. Temeljnega. Dobroje, da ljudje ‘e zaradi svoje splo{ne izobrazbe vedo, kajse dogaja v {ahu. Nekateri bi vzljubili igro in bi ji namenilive~ pozornosti. Ampak menim, da bi vsak moral vedeti,kaj se dogaja v {ahu, kaj je skrito v tej igri, saj v sebi nosizelo {irok spekter ~love{kih lastnosti, karakteristik.

Kaj bi priporo~ili mladim, katero knjigo naj vzamejov roke?Mislim, da je primerna vsaka knjiga, ki je napisana nanekem vi{jem nivoju. ^e gre za za~etni{ko knjigo, innekdo ‘e zna igrati {ah, potem je to brez smisla. Primerneso knjige zahtevnej{ega nivoja. Vendar pa, po mojihizku{njah, knjiga sama po sebi ni dovolj. Tako kot priljudeh, ki se nau~ijo nekega jezika, a ga v praksi nikoliniso uporabljali, v praksi se te‘ko znajdejo v njem. [ah jeprav tako tak, potrebna je praksa, kombinacija prakse inu~enja. Rekel bi celo, da je praksa pomembnej{a. Zdrugimi besedami: morajo igrati.

Ali je kak{na {ahovska knjiga na vas pustila velikvtis?Moje mnenje je, da kompletna {ahovska knjiga {e ni bilanapisana, ~eprav nekega dne morda bo. Zakaj? V {ahuniti ena knjiga {e ni zajela razli~nih perspektiv {ahovskeigre, z razli~nih strani. V knjigah opisujejo recimo partije,ni pa zajet ~as dogajanja, drobni trenutki, kulturno porekloigralcev in podobno. [ah je preve~ osredoto~en natehni~no stran, na kombinacije, poteze, otvoritve itd. Takose najve~ja pozornost v bistvu usmerja na tehni~no plat,tako da {ahovske knjige niso napisane kot romani, ki bilahko zajeli vse. V {ahu tak{na knjiga {e ne obstaja, tak{noje moje mnenje. Ni {e pri{el njen ~as, morda jo bo nekegadne nekdo napisal. Upam.

Ali sta za uspeh v {ahu potrebna samo red indisciplina?To dvoje je prav gotovo pomembno za uspeh, a breztalenta ne gre. Kaj sploh je talent? Talent je verjetno nekientuziazem, neka ljubezen do tega, s ~imer se ukvarjamo.Tisti ljudje, ki svoje delo opravljajo brez ljubezni, imajozelo majhne mo‘nosti za uspeh. Razumete? Nekaj morajoimeti radi. Morajo imeti ~ustveno podporo. V samih sebi.

8Samo tako gre. Potrebno je delo in disciplina,ampak talent je po mojem mnenju na prvemmestu.

Kako prena{ate poraz?Vsak {ahist, ki se profesionalno ukvarja s {ahom,te‘ko prena{a poraz, to je jasno. Kot izku{en{ahist sedaj, po tolikih letih, gledam na to sfilozofskega stali{~a in pravim, da so porazi deligre in jih je tako tudi potrebno jemati. ^e bosteto vpra{anje zastavili Kasparovu, vam bo sevedapovedal, da si ne predstavlja, kako bi prebil no~po porazu. Logi~no. Ker on kot prvak sveta innajve~ji igralec sveta meni, da je poraz za njegakonec njegovega ‘ivljenja. A nam, ki nismoprvaki sveta, poraz ne pomeni tako veliko, dobroga je sprejeti kot del igre.

Bled ima bogato {ahovsko tradicijo. Kakose po~utite tu, kot doma~in ali kot tujec?Bled je znan po {ahu in zelo sem vesel, da so sev Sloveniji odlo~ili, da naj bo v teh dneh, v ~asuolimpijade, prestolnica svetovnega {aha. Bledima bogato zgodovino in to je {e dodatnaobogatitev te zgodovine. Tudi Vidmarjevimemoriali bi se morali ponovno vrniti na Bled.To je pravi kraj. Seveda je {e veliko drugihprimernih krajev v Sloveniji, ampak Bled moranadaljevati s svojo bogato tradicijo. Ta tradicijanaj se nikoli ne preneha, naj traja in traja. Upam,da bo tako.

The great tenor EnricoCaruso took chess lessons from grandmaster Bora Kosti}and even Jose Raoul Capablanca himself! Pianist DavidOjstrah and composer Sergej Rahmaninov devoted theirentire free time to the game of kings. They even played forthe title of champion of chess playing musicians. Ojstrahwon, and he was among the supporters at all contests forthe world championship between 1930 and 1960! The com-poser Doluhanjan (his surname was sometimes writtenin the Baku way – Doluhanjanov) actively composed chessstudies in these years and his achievements undoubtedlyranked him among the top ten composers of chess prob-lems in the world!Look at a letter between two friends, lovers of chess: »Thegame of kings conquered me long ago and I love chesspassionately: I find both art and science in it. Chess meansrest and relaxation to me. My life could in general be de-scribed as correcting scores, creating new symphonies,chess.« The author of the letter, the great composer Dimitrij[ostakovi~, the recipient – the great pianist Lev Oborin.

CHESS AND MUSIC –GENERAL HARMONY

Another friend of [ostakovi~, the composer DimitrijKabalevski was even more in love with chess and alsoplayed in tournaments fairly regularly. He was strongenough to be a candidate for master.And chess players? Few people know that SamuelReshewsky composed religious music, and that NigelShort and Andrej Sokolov were soloists in rock groups.Mark Tajmanov and his first wife, Ljubov Bruk, were thebest piano duo in the former Soviet Union, where they is-sued several very successful records. Tajmanov still appearssuccessfully today, when he is well into his eighties!Vasilij Smislov and Lajos Portish, tenor and baritone,are both singers on a professional level. Who knows whatsort of musical career they could have made if they hadchosen singing as their profession!The American international master, Calvin Blocker, is avery successful concert pianist, and the Swedish interna-tional master, Stefan Wiedenkeller, one of the most suc-cessful young composers in Sweden. Among other things,he has composed a »Chess ballad« - a symphonic poem forchoir and orchestra. The main figures in the chess balladof course are chess figures, and the story interweaves fig-ures from old Scandinavian poems and stories.The several-times English women’s chess champion, EllenTrenmer, played the clarinet for two and a half decadesin the orchestra of the ballet group of Sadlers Wells, Etc.,etc.The ninth world chess champion, Tigran Petrosjan, inthe words of people who knew him very well, cultivated aspecial passion for the music of Richard Wagner. In ana-lysing interrupted games, Wagner’s music always floodedthe room and one could guess from the choice of reper-toire what chance the great Armenian had the next day.In a winning position, the third movement of »Lohegrin«had priority, when both sides had a chance, his choicetended to be »Tangeiser«, and in a losing position, Petrosjansought escape in the march »Courage of the Gods«.Robert Schumann can also be considered one of the greatlovers of chess, who wrote in his own music paper in 1845:»If the queen, in all her might symbolises melody, then theking is certainly the one who always plays the main roleand who finally forms the harmony.«A music critic once carried out some interesting research,the result of which was a comparison of chess players with

10musicians. He equated Paul Keres with Chopin, for light-ness, elegance and feeling for the smallest detail. VasilijSmislov is the chess Haydn, and Mihail Botvinnik tends toBeethoven, in the way the profundity of his ideas works onthe chess public. Mihail Talj, clearly, is the Mozart of thegame of chess.The fifth world champion, Max Euwe, too, liked to playwith similar comparisons. He saw Gershwin in Talj,Tchaikovsky in Spasski, Prokofiev in Larsen, and in Fischer– a synthesizer!The great cellist, Mstislav Rostropovi~, said:« I treat chessvery seriously, one could say that it attracts me more andmore.« Rostropovi~ was a great friend of Viktor Kor~nojand when the latter won in the fourth game of a duelagainst Lev Polugajevski, Rostropovi~ called the victoryEtude for black keys, after Chopin’s great work. (Cho-pin was also a great lover of chess, as can easily be seenfrom the photographs in his personal photograph album).»Chess, that’s music for the brain,« the pianist MoritzRosenthal liked to say. Rosenthal was a very strong ama-teur chess player, according to the American, EduardLasker, certainly the strongest among then musicians. In1924, Rosenthal, the last of Liszt’s students, fanatically sup-ported Emanuel Lasker, his chess hero, at a New York tour-nament. When the latter won the tournament, in grandstyle, too, Rosenthal proudly exclaimed: »How absurd theclaim now seems that real artists are already old at fifty!«The husband of the famous pop star, Madonna - GuyRitchie – is a great lover of chess, and Madonna, in orderat least partially to match him, hired a private chess tutor– the Scots champion Allan Morris. Another star, Sting,simply cannot imagine life without chess. He recently ap-peared at a great exhibition, when in the middle of NewYork, he took on his friend, Gari Kasparov.The rock opera »Chess«, written by Tim Webber, has beensuccessfully staged in many places throughout the world,including Broadway, of course. The plot is reminiscent ofthe Karpov and Kor~noj duel, and the period of the worstof the cold (including chess) war. As early as 1836, amusical comedy was staged at London’s King’s TheatreConvent Garden, called »Chess Island«.One of the greatest composers of the twentieth century, Ri-chard Strauss, was a member of the Viennese Chess Clubfor many years. A game can even be found in the clubarchives, that Strauss and Johannes Zukertort played! Ac-tually, Richard’s father, Henrik, was even a chess masterand at a Viennese tournament in 1882, he shared secondand third place with the Austrian master Max Weiss. SoRichard’s love of chess was no coincidence!Sergej Prokofjev, asked whether the moment could comein the development of music when all melodies, all choralvariations etc. had already been found, answered:»Just like in chess, in music, too, there are countless com-binations and that brings immortality to both.«If we consider well, we see that Prokofjev was quite right.And that the ever louder talk of the end of chess, which theall-powerful computer will research to the end – is com-pletely senseless, or at least somewhat exaggerated.

In jo nato {e ne{tetokrat preigravati vpopolnoma enaki izvedbi? V glasbi, seveda! Notni zapiszelo spominja na {ahovsko notacijo, le da pozna glasbasedem not, {ah pa osem. Polihimna je torej najbli‘jasorodnica Caisse... Enako lahko trdimo za emocionalnodojemanje obeh vej umetnosti.Veliki Andre Philidor je v svoji domovini Franciji zaslovelpredvsem s svojimi glasbenimi stvaritvami. Kdo ve, kak{no glasbenokariero bi lahko napravila, ~e bi za svoj poklic izbralapetje!Ameri{ki mednarodni mojster Calvin Blocker je zelouspe{en koncertni pianist, {vedski mednarodni mojsterStefan Wiedenkeller pa eden od najuspe{nej{ih mladihskladateljev na [vedskem. Med drugim je ustvaril»[ahovsko balado«, simfoni~no poemo za zbor in orkester.V »[ahovski baladi« so glavni liki seveda {ahovski, zgodbopa zapletajo liki iz starodavnih skandinavskih pesmi inzgodb.Ve~kratna angle{ka {ahovska prvakinja Ellen Trenmerje dve desetletji in pol pihala v klarinet v orkestru baletneskupine Sedlers Wells. Itd., itd.Deveti svetovni {ahovski prvak Tigran Petrosjan je pobesedah ljudi, ki so ga zelo dobro poznali, gojil posebnostrast do glasbe Richarda Wagnerja. Pri analizi prekinjenihpartij se je Wagnerjeva glasba vselej razlivala po sobi inpo izboru repertoarja si lahko uganil, kak{ne mo‘nostibo imel naslednji dan veliki Armenec. V dobljenempolo‘aju je imel prednost tretji takt »Lohegrina«, v polo‘ajuz obojestranskimi mo‘nostmi je zapel zbor v »Tangeiserju«,v izgubljenem polo‘aju pa je Petrosjan iskal uteho v mar{u»Poguba bogov«.Med velike zaljubljence v {ah lahko {tejemo tudi RobertaSchumanna, ki je leta 1845, v lastnem glasbenem~asopisu pisal takole: »^e dama, v vsej svoji mo~i lahkosimbolizira melodijo, potem je gotovo kralj tisti, ki vselejodigra glavno vlogo, in ki dokon~no izoblikujeharmonijo.«Nek glasbeni kritik je neko~ izvedel zanimivo raziskavo,rezultat katere je bila primerjava {ahistov z glasbeniki.Paula Keresa je izena~il s Chopinom, po lahkoti,elegantnosti in ob~utku za najmanj{e detajle. VasilijSmislov – to je {ahovski Haydn, Mihail Botvinnik pa senagiba k Beethovnu, tako namre~ deluje globina njegovihidej na {ahovsko publiko. Mihail Talj pa je, jasno, Mozart{ahovske igre.

12Tudi peti svetovni prvak Max Euwe se je rad poigraval spodobnimi primerjavami. On je v Talju videl Gershwina,v Spasskem ^ajkovskega, v Larsenu Prokofjeva, vFischerju pa – sintetizator!Veliki violon~elist Mstislav Rostropovi~ je govoril:« S{ahom se ukvarjam zelo resno, lahko bi rekel, da me vsebolj in bolj privla~i.« Rostropovi~ je bil velik prijateljViktorja Kor~noja, in ko je slednji zmagal v ~etrti partijidvoboja proti Levu Polugajevskemu, je Rostropovi~ zmagopoimenoval »Etuda za ~rne tipke«, po velikemChopinevem delu. (Tudi Chopin je bil velik zaljubljenecv {ah, kar je lepo vidno iz fotografij v njegovem osebnemalbumu).»[ah, to je glasba za mo‘gane,« je rad povedal pianistMoritz Rosenthal. Rosenthal je bil zelo mo~an amaterski{ahist, po besedah Ameri~ana Eduarda Laskerja gotovonajmo~nej{i med takratnimi glasbeniki. Leta 1924 jeRosenthal, sicer zadnji Lisztov u~enec, na Newyor{kemturnirju, fanati~no navijal za Emanuela Laskerja, svojega{ahovskega heroja. Ko je slednji tudi osvojil turnir, in to{e v velikem slogu, je Rosenthal ponosno izjavil: »Kakoabsurdno sedaj zveni izjava, da so pravi umetniki popetdesetem letu ‘e stari!« Mo‘ znamenite pop zvezdniceMadonne, Guy Ritchie, je velik ljubitelj {aha, Madonnapa, da bi mu lahko vsaj delno parirala, si je najelaprivatnega {ahovskega u~itelja – {kotskega prvaka AllanaMorrisa. Druga zvezda Sting pa si ‘ivljenja brez {ahapreprosto ne zna ve~ predstavljati. Nedavno je nastopil vveliki ekshibiciji, ko se je sredi New Yorka pomeril kar sprijateljem Garijem Kasparovom.Rock opero »[ah«, ki jo je napisal Tim Webber, so zuspehom predvajali marsikje po svetu, seveda tudi naBroadwayu. Zaplet spominja na dvoboje Karpova inKor~noja ter obdobje najhuj{e hladne (tudi {ahovske)vojne. @e leta 1836 pa je bila na sceno londonskegakraljevega teatra Covent Gardna postavljena glasbenakomedija »[ahovski otok«.Eden najve~jih skladateljev dvajsetega stoletja RichardStrauss je bil dolga leta ~lan Dunajskega {ahovskegakluba. V klubskem arhivu najdemo celo partijo, ki sta joigrala Strauss in Johannes Zukertort! Resnici na ljubopovejmo, da je Richardov o~e Henrik bil celo {ahovskimojster, in da si je na dunajskem turnirju leta 1882 delildrugo in tretje mesto z avstrijskim mojstrom MaxomWeissom. Richardova ljubezen do {aha torej ni bilanaklju~na!Sergej Prokofjev je na vpra{anje o tem, ali lahko nastopitrenutek v razvoju glasbe, ko bodo najdene ‘e vsemelodije, vse pevske variacije itd., odgovoril:»Kakor v {ahu, je tudi v glasbi ne{teto {tevilo kombinacijin to dejstvo obema prina{a nesmrtnost.«^e dobro pomislimo, vidimo da je imel Prokofjev kar prav.In da so vse glasnej{i pogovori in ugibanja o koncu {aha,ki naj bi ga dokon~no raziskal vsemogo~ni ra~unalnik,popolnoma nesmiselni ali vsaj nekoliko prenapihnjeni.

The Brunei team captain has a simple target in the ongo-ing Chess Olympiad in Bled Slovenia: To improve the posi-tion of the men’s team by 15 places and women’s team by5 positions. He would consider this to be a step forward.Brunei has taken part in 3 Chess Olympiads, Manila 1992as a casual team, Istanbul 2000 and now Bled SloveniaSome of the Brunei chess players have managed to qualifyfor an ELO Rating and this is a good omen for this youngchess nation. There are 4 districts and the Brunei ChessFederation arranged all the coaching for the players andthe talented juniors. The team captain said: »We are goingto organize the Asian youth age group championship. Ourjuniors are ably coached by Indonesian internationalmaster Naseb Ginting.Catch them young is our strategy and team spirit isamong our strengths in this Chess Olympiad. We also haveplans to send our talented juniors to Malaysia, where theywill gain international exposure and experience.In Brunei, we conducted a major international opentournament in 2000, in which 5 grandmasters and 14international masters took part . In future we hope to organize bigger events and also official FIDE events. The BledChess Olympiad is well organized and is among the best events of the world.”

Brunejski kapetan mo{tva ima preprost cilj na tej {ahovskiolimpiadi, ki poteka na Bledu v Sloveniji: izbolj{ati polo‘ajmo{ke ekipe za 15 mest in ‘enske ekipe za 5 mest. To bimu zadostovalo, da bi govoril o napredku svoje ekipe.Brunej je do sedaj sodeloval v treh {ahovskih olimpiadah:leta 1992 kot prilo‘nostno mo{tvo v Manili, leta 2000 vIstanbulu in sedaj na Bledu, v Sloveniji.Nekateri brunejski {ahisti so se uspeli kvalificirati za ELOrangiranje in to je dober znak za ta mlad {ahovski narod.Brunej je razdeljen na {tiri obmo~ja in Brunejska {ahovskaorganizacija je organizirala celoten trening za igralce innadarjene juniorje. Kapetan mo{tva je izjavil: »Organiziralibomo azijsko mladinsko prvenstvo. Na{e mladinceizvrstno trenira indonezijski mednarodni mojster NasebGinting.
