Distinguished Colts - 2008On Saturday, June 7, the AHS graduation ceremony marked the end of the JAMES ADAMS era at Arlington High School. After 38 years in the AISD and 15 as Colt-in-Chief, James is entering his well-deserved retirement.
James served as teacher, counselor and administrator at four AISD schools before taking the helm at AHS. His steadyleadership has steered the students and staff through significant changes: the addition of the freshman class to campus;the growth of the student body to just under 3,000; the various building expansions to accommodate the additional1,000 students.
During his tenure, some of the student achievements include: state semi-finals in football, regional finals in volleyball, state champion wrestlers, district champion cross country teams, area champions in baseball, bi-district champions inbasketball and softball, regional finalists in boys and girls soccer, UIL One-Act Play State Championship, Statelevel Academic Decathlon team, Sweepstakes Orchestra for 15 straight years, numerous all-state band, choir, andorchestra students. Mr. Adams says, “I’ve been fortunate to work with some really good kids, teachers and coaches!”His enthusiasm for all things green and white counterbalanced his rock-solid presence and earned the respect of all whoworked with him and for him. As one former student remembers, “He was consistent. He would handle things the sameway every day with everyone. You didn’t have to guess with Mr. Adams.” Another says, “I always felt safe knowingMr. Adams was in charge. He was the type of man you wanted to impress and you wanted to make him proud.Arlington High School felt like a home to so many because Mr. Adams’ compassion for his students and his staff madeus feel like a family.”
Both of his daughters graduated from AHS and the first diploma he ever handed out was to Melissa Adams. Bothdaughters—Melissa and Jennifer—teach in elementary schools in the AISD. James’ wife Barbara—a premier teacherat Hill Elementary—joins James in retirement.
After a period of rapid changeover in the principal’s office, James provided stability and a genuine love for ArlingtonHigh. He improved his faculty; initiated the International Baccalaureate program; remained unflappable in times ofdifficulty. He kept AHS open to transfer students as long as possible each year so the school could draw from studentsall over town who want to experience what it means to be a Colt. Often that has been as many as 700 students, who, likeJames, are Colts By Choice. He is an energetic, smart, visionary educator who nurtured Colt Spirit, Pride and Tradition. He is one reason it is still sweet to be in Colt Country.
Although JAMES DITTO was born in Fort Worth (when there was no hospital in town), he is a native son of Arlingtonwhere he started school at South Side and finished at AHS with the Class of 1948. After high school, James attendedNorth Texas Agricultural College, one of the forerunners of UTA, before he continued his studies at the University ofTexas at Austin. Following school, James joined the U.S. Army where he served in the military police. Stationed at FortBliss, he obtained the rank of First Lieutenant.
After receiving an electrical engineering degree from SMU, James worked for Rockwell International/Collins Radioas project engineer and program manager for projects in Alaska, Saudi Arabia, and the U.S.
An active supporter of both AHS and UTA, James has served on the AHS Alumni Association Board of Directorsand has entrusted his children and grandchildren to AHS: Sons Steve, ’74, and Douglas, ’81, stepdaughtersJudy Ramsey Snodgrass, ’74, Jana Ramsey Lewis, ’81, grandchildren James Ditto, ’96, John Ditto, ’99, Candice Ditto,’01, and Kelsey Snodgrass, ’04.
In addition, James has served on the UTA Alumni Board, Development Board, Finance Committee and AthleticCouncil. He is past president of the Mid-Cities Technical Club at UTA. His other civic endeavors include working withthe American Cancer Society by lobbying groups in Austin and Washington for research funds and smoke-freedesignations. He has served the city of Arlington on a planning committee which set landscaping standards for buildersand developers. He serves as an elder of First Presbyterian Church where he has been a member for 65 years.
Even with all these commitments, he saves time for his favorite hobbies—golf and reading.ALVIN, Class of 1965, and MARTHA WIGGINS MOSELEY, Class of 1966, started dating in high school and marriedwhile they were students at Tarrant County Junior College. Alvin joined the Coast Guard, serving four years, whichwas a temporary interruption in his continuing education. They both went to UTA and went on to careers—Alvin as

a mechanical engineer and Martha as a nurse. Alvin has worked at Bell Helicopter for 34 years where he is now asenior engineering specialist working on the V22 helicopter. Martha spent most of her 17 years as a surgical nurse atArlington Memorial Hospital with stints in Fort Worth and at Arlington Day Surgery.
Their connections with Arlington High School span a number of generations because of their families’ long-termresidency in Arlington. Martha’s great-grandmother Collins (as in Collins Street) was an original settler of the Webbcommunity with her farm where Highway 360 crosses Mayfield Road. Her grandmother Hannah Shaw owned andoperated Jean’s Café on Main Street (across from Rockyfellers). Her mother Louine Lowe Wiggins was a member ofthe Class of 1942. Alvin has history here, too, where his dad laid most of the pipeline in the area. Alvin’s work on thosepipeline projects, even as a youngster, led to his driving a tractor while still in elementary school. With pride, Alvinadmits he got his first ticket when he was 11!
The Moseleys reconnected to AHS when their sons, Rob, ’88, and Andy, ’91, attended. Since the boys were active infootball and soccer, respectively, the Moseleys’ alumni status shifted to that of boosters. Since then, they have been actively involved in both their classes, helping to organize their classes’ reunions and inmaintaining connections. In 2005, they began serving on the AHS Alumni Board of Directors as Reunion Representativescharged with alerting classes to the existence of the Alumni Association and to encourage membership. As Jo McGovernsays, “They have both spent many, many hours spreading the AHS Spirit.”
They relinquished that directorship this year when they learned they will be leaving Arlington in December for ayear’s residency in New Burn, North Carolina where Alvin’s work requires him to go. Although they eagerly anticipatelife in a new community for a change, they know this is temporary and that returning home to their many familymembers and friends is on a not-too-distant horizon.
One plan for the summer is a trip to Dearborn, Michigan in their red, 1948 Ford F1 truck—a purchase they flew toFlorida to retrieve a few years ago and then drove home to Arlington.
Good luck, Alvin and Martha, on the way to Dearborn and in your year away from home.

HANNAH CROSSNOE began her path to AHS at Duff Elementary and continued at Bailey JH. She will begin her collegestudies at Tarrant County College and plans to major in nutrition/dietietics. She is part of the third generation of herfamily to attend college. Hannah’s characterization of Arlington High centers around the “feeling of everyone at ArlingtonHigh being one big Colt family.” Her fondest memory will be leading the school in its Spirit, Pride, and Tradition as aColt cheerleader.
SAMUEL TANG, like Brittneé, began school days in Arlington at Short Elementary, then headed for Dunn and Bailey. Heis first generation in his family to attend college and will go to Boston to enroll at Emerson College where he will studywriting, literature and publishing. Samuel’s memories of Arlington High center on the friends he has made. He valuesthe diversity of AHS because so many different “types” of people and the various cultures make school “more interesting.I’ve learned so much at AHS—about other people and myself.”
ALA AHMAD, a second generation college student in her family, heads to Texas Christian University in Fort Worth thisfall. She will major in political scienceand business, with an eye on law school. In addition to AHS, Ala attendedAtherton Elementary. For Ala, ArlingtonHigh was all about tradition. Thetraditions “passed from class to classkeep the alumni’s influence and spiritalive.” She credits two adults during herhigh school years with amazing support:Brenda Gilmore and James Adams.

BRITTNEÉ KELLER will attend Prairie View A&M University this fall where she will major incomputer science and civil engineering. She is in the second generation of her family to attendcollege. In the AISD, Brittneé went to Short Elementary, Lynn Hale Academy and Gunn JH,before reaching AHS. Once there Brittneé appreciated the “positive environment, the faculty, andall the opportunities to succeed and help others.” She is proud to be a “true Colt.” An unforgettableingredient of her days at AHS was Mrs. Fougerousse’s English class—her favorite. It was a classshe looked forward to every day because her teacher could always “bring a smile to my face.”

After four years of working together, we finally got the job done! On June 14, the Alumni Association, the ArlingtonPreservation Foundation, and the University of Texas at Arlington held a joint dedication of the marker honoring the locationof the first Arlington High School at the corner of Cooper Street and UTA Blvd (formerly Border Street). The Foundation
designed and forged the plaque, generous alumni from AHS paid forthe plaque, and UTA placed it onthe concrete pillar and landscapedthe area. It is a lovely, shady spot inthe midst of the city and thecampus. Now no matter what thefuture holds for the remainingbuildings of the old complex, amonument stands as a reminder thatin 1922 the first Arlington HighSchool was the “largest publiceducation facility between Dallasand Fort Worth.”
